The use of indigenous place names is becoming more common, providing insight into the origin of names of towns, cities and regions across the country. The ABC’s this place project is working with local indigenous language custodians to share the meaning behind some of these names. Vincent McKenzie is a language custodian and teacher in western Australia’s Kimberley region.

00:04My name is Vincent McKenzie. I'm a Kolargun bard, also Kolargun. I'm from the Djarajan
00:11community, and community, its clan group is the Kolargun people, which is from the Bardi
00:17tribe. This place that we're at the moment, it's called Burururon. The name of this place
00:25comes from the place Burururon, and Rotorururur is that place where they walk along, the mud
00:32flats. With this place, there's a dreaming of two young boys that went out hunting. They
00:42left the tribe, the Kolargun people, back on the sand dune, and they said they were going
00:48to go hunting. They're going to catch some fish for the mob. And they said, we're going
00:56to send a signal back to the other mob at the beach. They came back, light the fire on the
01:02top of the hill, send the signal up. They looked, they said, oh, there's a fire burning there.
01:10They said, okay, they must have catch all that fish. Let's walk. They'll be waiting for us,
01:16those two young boys. Today you still see those footprints on the rocks. This story has a
01:24dreaming with it, and also a song line. In Bardi, we call them Ali, fish. Ambun Ambun family, all
01:37you come together and share that feed, and then go back home. When I go out on country,
01:44come back to this place Burururon, I go along the beaches, check around country, see it,
01:51everything is still okay, and have a good time at theater, you know, go fishing, get back
02:00on country, hunting, and all that stuff you have. I'm always on country, and I look after
02:10the place. It gives me that, Leon, we call our feeling of goodness, of our well-being,
02:17being back on country and looking after our country. It's a beautiful place. My old people
02:25said, keep the names, keep the language, because one day you'll be the one who's going to pass it over.
