00:00But we begin with the biggest story of the day.
00:01I guess the season that the Orlando Magic had getting deep into the or deeper into the postseason wasn't good
00:07enough for Jamal Mosley.
00:08They end up firing him after pushing the Pistons to Game 7 in their first round series.
00:15Mosley had three consecutive playoff appearances from 23 to 26, a couple division titles, three winning seasons.
00:21But I guess it was not enough.
00:22It seems like the Magic determined that Mosley was going to be out even before the series began.
00:27Sure feels like that.
00:28But the Pistons, they ended up beating the Magic yesterday to send them home for the season.
00:32That's why they can make the move today.
00:33The final score was 116 to 94.
00:35They win and cover as eight and a half point favorites.
00:38It was the combo of Cunningham and Tobias Harris, 32 for Cunningham, 30 for Harris, Paolo Bencaro.
00:43Man, he could be a force next season.
00:45He had 38 points as they end up losing in this game.
00:48So here is Kate Cunningham on the Pistons getting over the hump and winning their first playoff series in almost
00:5420 years.
00:54This franchise has been able to get over that hump.
00:56So what's it like for you and this team, for you guys to come back 3-1 and for Game
01:027 at home to kind of get over that hump?
01:04It's great.
01:05We had a great regular season.
01:08You know, we've built a lot of momentum going into this playoffs and to lose in the first round would
01:14have really stung.
01:15I think it would have stung the city.
01:18You know, the city has gotten more and more excited about this team and we feel the love and all
01:22that.
01:22So, you know, we wanted to perform to figure it out and to, you know, come back from 3-1
01:30odds against us and to come back and win it at home.
01:34So, it feels good.
01:35It feels really good and we're excited for what's to come.
01:37We want to continue to, you know, represent this city in the right light but also, you know, win games,
01:43win series, and the ultimate goal is the championship.
01:46Is this team good enough?
01:47Do you have what you need to be successful at that next level?
01:52I mean, I can't really answer that.
01:55You know, I want to say yes, but we haven't been out of the first round.
01:58So, if you're going off the last three years, the answer is no.
02:02But the nice answer would be yes, but honestly speaking, I can't say that we're good enough to be in
02:09the finals or Eastern finals because the last three years we've had the same result.
02:13So, that's your answer.
02:16And that soundbite from Ben Carroll before Mosley was fired today.
02:20Okay, Cleveland Cavaliers are moving on.
02:22Seven-game series completed with the Raptors.
02:24They win in seven.
02:25114-102 covers eight-and-a-half-point favorites.
02:28Spider Mitchell with 22.
02:29Jared Allen with 23.
02:31Maybe this seven-game series was the best thing that happened to the Cavs in the playoffs.
02:35At least Kenny Atkinson, the head coach, seems to feel that way.
02:39I think this series galvanized us, you know, when you have to, their physicality, their speed, their athleticism, things weren't
02:49perfect.
02:51And we kind of know the difference, you know, last year we kind of had a, you know, easier series.
02:58You know, these type of series, they build you up, you know, and I'm glad we went through it.
03:06It wasn't fun, you know, but I think it will be a better team coming out of it.
03:12I learned how much I love this roster, how much I love my players.
03:15That's what I really learned.
03:18I'm going to be, tomorrow I'm going to be missing coaching those guys.
03:22I told them before the game that, you know, I want to advance to the next round so I can
03:26continue coaching them and being around them.
03:29This is a very special group of people, and I'm very grateful and thankful to have those guys around me
03:35and to have a chance to work with them.
03:37All right, so Cleveland moves on.
03:39So do the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers.
03:44Lakers, not a surprise, of course, maybe beginning of the series.
03:47But as the series went on, you kind of had a feeling the Lakers would win.
03:49But this is an absolute shock to see Philadelphia beat Boston in the seven-game series.
03:54One of the epic collapses, honestly, of all time in the NBA playoffs.
03:57109-100, 76ers will play the Knicks, and we'll preview that game coming up in just a little bit.
04:03Okay, the red-hot Chicago Cubs win again.
04:05They sweep and beat the Diamondbacks five in a row.
04:08They win as home favorites.
04:09And Matthew Boyd got the win.
04:11Six innings pitched for him.
04:13Moises Ballesteros has been such a nice find for the Cubs.
04:16He had another home run yesterday.
04:18Craig Council loves the offense they've been going since day one.
04:22Yeah, I think this is a good example of how we've been playing offense for a good chunk of the
04:27year.
04:28Just a lot of pressure innings.
04:31And that just makes it hard on the pitcher.
04:34You know, you've got to keep making big pitches, big pitches.
04:37And we broke Bushy, obviously, with a big one to clear the bases.
04:42But, you know, it's just good offense.
04:44I mean, it's tough offense, and it feels like there's action every inning.
04:47It feels like we've got a chance to score every inning.
04:49And that's going to be a consistent offense.
04:54Meanwhile, in the National League Central, the battle between the Reds and the Pirates went Pirates all the way.
04:59They win as home favorites yesterday, one to nothing, and sweep the Cincinnati Reds.
05:04How about that?
05:05Brandon Ashcraft, seven and two-thirds ball.
05:07The Pirates pitching has just been stellar this season.
05:11The Pirates also showed they had some attitude against the Reds, at least according to skipper Don Kelly.
05:16Tough stretch there, losing five in a row.
05:18And the leadership in the clubhouse, I know that most of you that are proud in there.
05:22It's been the same.
05:24And that's really what it's going to take as we go through this season.
05:27Let's continue that iceberg mentality of grit, fight, toughness, and continue to play like that.
05:33And it was evident in this homestand.
05:37Another day of baseball, another Aaron Judge home run.
05:40Pretty much saying that every day these days.
05:41He hit his 13th home run of the season, which ties Murakami.
05:44For the league lead, the Yankees end up winning 11-3.
05:48Not the best start for Max Freed.
05:49Five and a third, six strikeouts.
05:52He gave up six hits and walked three.
05:54It was a grind, says Freed, after the game against the Orioles.
05:58Max, how much of a grind did it feel like out there for you today?
06:04As far as on the field and the results, definitely a little bit more of a grind.
06:10I felt like I was happy with how I felt, the way the stuff was coming out.
06:16And you just know that over the course of the season, you're going to get put in situations
06:21where you have, you know, maybe some soft hits that find some grass
06:26and you've got to put yourself out of jams and stuff not going your way.
06:29And, you know, I was happy with being able to limit it and not give up the lead,
06:35and especially, you know, when stuff started kind of going sideways.
06:40But I knew that, you know, we were just one big inning from breaking this game open,
06:45which we ended up doing late.
06:46So, you know, just happy about being able to do my job, keeping us in it
06:51and, you know, not letting that inning get too big.
06:56All right, the Los Angeles Dodgers a little back on track, at least.
06:58They've been struggling lately.
06:59They do avoid the sweep against the Cardinals, winning 4-1,
07:03as Justin Robleski had six innings pitched in this game that got him the win.
07:09Also, the Braves beat the Rockies by a final score of 11-6.
07:12It was the return of Spencer Strider.
07:14He threw three and a third innings and struck out six,
07:18but walked five and gave up three runs.
07:21Also, this lineup without Ronald Acuna Jr., who was placed on the injured list.
07:26And the Braves are saying that he could be back in less than two weeks,
07:29but we certainly will see.
07:30Matt Olsen had a couple of hits.
07:32So did Ozzy Albies.
07:33And also Jonah Heim had two hits and five runs driven in
07:37and also a home run in that game.
07:39Stanley Cup playoffs continuing, of course, last night and into today,
07:43the seven-game series between the Montreal Canadiens
07:47and Tampa Bay Lightning is complete with, how about this,
07:50the Habs finally getting a playoff victory in a series.
07:53They win.
07:54They'll play the Sabres in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
07:57First game between the Avs and the Wild out west,
08:00and it was Wild, 9-6, the final score there.
08:04Colorado takes a 1-0 series lead in that best-of-seven series.
08:07And tonight we'll get a couple of games, the Flyers and Hurricanes.
08:11They will battle in the east.
08:13The Hurricanes have a 1-0 series lead.
08:15And then tonight we get game one between the Anaheim Ducks
08:18and the Vegas Golden Knights.
08:20That affair will drop the puck at 9.30 Eastern.
08:24Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:25We've got Pat Evans with us from LegalSportsReport.com
08:28diving into the latest sports betting topics.
08:30Great to always have Pat here on the show and back for another week, Pat.
08:34All right, so let's get started.
08:35And the focus that we begin on today is Camby,
08:38a company that we've talked about quite a bit here on the show,
08:41very into technology, B2B provider of sports betting.
08:45And with all the sports betting operators out there in the space,
08:48it would make sense that one of the companies
08:50or several of the companies would have a lot of success
08:52helping be a provider.
08:53And Camby is absolutely, I guess,
08:56one of those rising in their stock in the first quarter.
09:02Very well right now.
09:03They reported their latest earnings last week
09:05and their revenue rose 5% year over year,
09:08which is a pretty big deal for them
09:10because they've had to pivot their business model.
09:13At first, they were supplying a lot of the traditional sports books
09:17that we see who have since brought all their technology in-house.
09:22So they've had to pivot to new operators,
09:25new types of partnerships rather than,
09:29you know, I can't quite remember who their initial partnerships were,
09:33but the FanDuals and the Caesars of the world
09:35who have now kind of brought it in-house.
09:37So they've been trying to figure out how to make their revenue rise.
09:41And sure enough, they've done it.
09:44They said it was a lot of higher sports betting margins
09:47and increased sports betting activity.
09:49So you're seeing more bets being placed
09:52and higher revenue from the sports books that they are partnered with.
09:56Interestingly enough,
09:57and we're going to talk about it more here in a second,
09:59that they don't really see any prediction market effects on their revenue,
10:04which is kind of interesting to see.
10:07And you actually heard that from a lot of the other sports books
10:10reporting their revenues recently saying,
10:12yeah, it doesn't seem like it's really the same pool of people
10:15that are betting on sports books
10:17and the people who are betting on regulated sports books
10:20versus the people who are trading on these prediction markets.
10:24So a really interesting kind of revenue report from Canby here.
10:28And they think they're going to have a pretty big year
10:31with the World Cup in the U.S.
10:33Yeah, I would agree.
10:34Okay, so now let's move on to the CFTC and prediction markets,
10:37where eventually this is going to come to a head.
10:40There's a coalition for prediction markets.
10:42They would like the CFTC to get involved
10:45or at least figure out one way or the other where this is headed.
10:48I think regardless of what we comment on, Pat, you, me, and everybody else,
10:52it's still the world of the big unknown
10:54as to where we will be at the end of this year,
10:56where we'll be next year, where we'll be in the future.
10:58But as of now, prediction markets, they continue to roll on.
11:02Yeah, you know, when I started reporting about the legislation
11:05and regulation of sports betting,
11:07I never thought something like this would happen.
11:09You know, over the years, you and I have talked about DFS 2.0
11:12that emerged alongside the sports books,
11:14the sweepstakes providers that have emerged,
11:17and then now prediction markets.
11:19And yeah, we've got state regulators suing, you know,
11:23Kelsey and Polymarket and the like saying,
11:25hey, you can't do what you're doing.
11:27You're offering sports betting without a license.
11:30And then, of course, you've got them saying,
11:32well, we're regulated by the CFTC, which has federal jurisdiction,
11:36and these are swaps.
11:37We're fine doing what we're doing.
11:39And now the CFTC is getting involved
11:41and countersuing state regulators and such.
11:44So this will very likely get to the Supreme Court
11:46before we know actually what happens.
11:48But what has happened since then is the CFTC has said,
11:52okay, we're going to start putting in rulemaking
11:54and make sure that, you know,
11:56people are following some sort of rules.
11:57And this isn't just the Wild West,
11:59which a lawyer recently said,
12:01we're at the tail end of the Wild Wild West
12:03of prediction markets.
12:04So we'll see what happens after these rules are in place.
12:06But last week, they had a public commentary period
12:09kind of close up.
12:11The Coalition for Prediction Markets,
12:13which notably does not include Kelsey or Polymarket,
12:15but is made up of Coinbase Crypto.
12:17Oh, Kelsey is in it, I'm sorry.
12:19Robinhood and Underdog.
12:20And they're basically saying, you know,
12:23do what you're doing.
12:24We don't want to see too much change.
12:26You know, sports does fit within the swap definition,
12:30which you can trade on.
12:31So there you go.
12:33But they also made sure to say,
12:35we don't want any sort of casino gaming
12:39integrated into prediction markets
12:41or anything that could resemble casino gaming.
12:44So I think that's kind of trying to help distance itself
12:46from the gambling kind of reputation
12:48that it has kind of emerged with it.
12:51So, yeah, I think we'll see some rules drop
12:55from the CFTC soon and kind of further define
12:58what prediction markets can and cannot do
13:00and how these operators are able to offer
13:03in various states,
13:03at least until we get a Supreme Court ruling down the line.
13:07So this is something that, again,
13:09you know, when I started doing this five years ago,
13:10I never would have thought I'd be watching
13:12this kind of crazy development.
13:14But boy, these things are hot.
13:16And certainly the talk of people
13:18who don't even think about sports betting
13:20or online gambling.
13:22So here we are.
13:24Finally, Pat, the state of Ohio.
13:26Okay, let's get to them here
13:28because I guess that they are sort of just resolute
13:30in the fact that if prediction markets
13:32are going to roll,
13:33just like our sports betting operators in the space,
13:36why is it not fair for us,
13:39meaning the state of Ohio,
13:40to tax these prediction markets?
13:43And by the way, it's a fair question.
13:46I mean, prediction markets are operating
13:47in the same space
13:48and saying that we're not doing the same thing.
13:51I mean, I guess in a way they're right,
13:53but not really.
13:54Like in the end,
13:55you're still trying to predict outcomes of sports.
13:57So I get it from Ohio,
13:59but it still falls along the lines with the CFTC
14:02and kind of where everything is going,
14:04which we don't know.
14:05Exactly.
14:06And so this is kind of exactly
14:08what we're talking about here.
14:09The Ohio Casino Control Commission
14:11is embroiled in a lawsuit with Kelsey
14:13for offering unregulated sports betting.
14:16Recently, a judge sided with the state
14:18and denied Kelsey their request for an injunction
14:21to prevent the regulator
14:24from enforcing its gaming rules on the company.
14:29So that's why we're going to see multiple states,
14:33New York, New Jersey, Maryland,
14:36a lot of states are embroiled
14:39in these lawsuits right now.
14:40So this will get to the Supreme Court.
14:42But what you're seeing now
14:43is kind of states trying to get ahead of it
14:45to the potential that the Supreme Court does say,
14:49hey, you can regulate these versus the CFTC.
14:52Because right now, say this passes
14:54and Ohio does get to say,
14:56you need to apply for a sports betting license
15:00and you need to pay the 20% sports betting tax.
15:03Kelsey can say, no, we're not going to do it.
15:06But if the Supreme Court in a couple of years
15:07or a year or whenever that might be says,
15:11okay, states can do it,
15:12then these rules are already in place
15:14and the states that haven't done anything like this,
15:16you know, are kind of left on their heels
15:18and trying to pass this as we go.
15:21The other interesting thing there though
15:22is for the time being,
15:24if this does pass,
15:25it doesn't mean anything
15:26from the prediction market point of view.
15:28So that's a story that I did a while ago
15:31in talking to various lawyers saying,
15:34you know, does this matter right now?
15:36And no, it isn't.
15:37It's just a preemptive sort of thing
15:38to make sure that those regulations are in place
15:41when there's a time that maybe they do matter.
15:43But again, for now,
15:45we're just kind of based on watching the CFTC
15:47and what they do and what they're saying,
15:50which, you know,
15:51while they are doing their rulemaking process
15:53at the moment,
15:54they're also kind of saying,
15:55you know, we had leaders in the CFTC
15:57recently publicly say,
15:59basically,
16:01these platforms,
16:02CalShe and Polymarket and the like
16:05need to be better at self-regulating
16:07and do that.
16:09So that's, you know,
16:09I think we talked about that last time I was on
16:11was CalShe, you know,
16:13saying to a bunch of politicians
16:16who bet on themselves in elections.
16:18No, you can't do that.
16:20We're going to fine you,
16:20even though there's little slaps on the wrist
16:22with, you know,
16:22a couple hundred dollar fines
16:23and a five-year suspension from the platforms.
16:25They are starting to do that,
16:27trying to make a bigger deal
16:29out of their own self-policing
16:31to make sure that they have kind of
16:33a better reputation from the general public
16:36as, you know,
16:36you've seen a lot of backlash
16:39from people saying,
16:40well, how much insider trading is going on?
16:43This is pretty dark and murky.
16:44So anyway,
16:46these states are just trying to get ahead of it.
16:48There's a couple other states
16:49that have also done similar moves.
16:51And so I'm sure we'll see more next year
16:54as sessions get restarted next year too.
16:57All right.
16:58Well, the best thing that Pat said
16:59about prediction markets,
17:00which is the summary,
17:01the one word summary anyway,
17:03because we really don't know.
17:04No matter how much Pat writes
17:05or we talk about it here on the show.
17:07I mean, they're fun stories to discuss.
17:09It's just so much
17:12It's something new every day.
17:15Something new every day
17:16just keeps changing.
17:17Pat's up in the market.
17:18Yep.
17:18Yeah.
17:19Pat, I'll see you again later in the week.
17:21Thanks for coming on.
17:22Awesome.
17:23Thanks as always, Craig.
