00:00I'm Lucy Fink. I'm a video producer at Refinery29, but every so often I like to try other people's jobs.
00:06Today I'm working with my mom and her business partner, Lori, to see if I have what it takes to
00:10redesign my own bedroom.
00:12This is Lucy for Hire.
00:15Mother's Day is just around the corner, so what better way to celebrate than by spending some quality time with
00:21my mom learning how to do her job?
00:23Hi, my name's Debra. I'm a stager, designer, and real estate agent, and I have a company that goes into
00:30homes that are probably about to be sold, and we do a very quick makeover.
00:36So for Lucy's and Michael's project today, they're staying in their apartment at least another year, and they don't want
00:41to invest a lot in total redesign, so we're really just going to make it prettier.
00:46We're going to add some color and some spice and give them a really pretty space.
00:51When we first moved into this space, we didn't put too much thought into designing the bedroom.
00:55A lot of the pieces came from my and Michael's previous apartments, and even though they didn't necessarily flow together,
01:02we figured we'd do a redesign at some point in the future.
01:06With a little help from my mom and her business partner, Lori, it was time to redo our bedroom once
01:12and for all.
01:12My first challenge was to evaluate the space.
01:15We'll take a little trip around the room and see what's absolutely necessary to stay and what you could do
01:20without.
01:21We did a walkthrough of the room and talked about what was and wasn't working.
01:25I loved this when I got it, but it started to rip. It's now like torn open.
01:31Yeah, it's going.
01:32The rug had begun to look musty. The corner was cluttered up with boxes and bags.
01:37That whole, this whole corner, is disappearing.
01:41And the picture hanging over our bed was pretty, but didn't exactly add a spark of inspiration or creativity to
01:47the space.
01:48So we kind of know what we're doing, or we know what we're undoing.
01:52Undoing. So what do we do next?
01:54We look for inspiration.
01:55All right, let's go look.
01:57My second challenge was to gather inspiration.
02:01Inspiration can come from anywhere.
02:03We like to look through magazines, tear out our favorite pages, also tear out things we don't like, so we
02:08don't go there.
02:09We sat in my living room and scattered tons of magazines and pictures in front of us.
02:14We looked for colors that inspired us.
02:16I think blue should be our color.
02:18Like, I live with the boys, so it's not going to be pink.
02:21And I really like the bright blues and, like, all different shades of blue.
02:25And before long, we felt like we had a pretty good idea of what we were going for.
02:30This inspiration process is vital when it comes to designing a room.
02:33Let's go shopping.
02:35You want to go shopping now?
02:36No, we have to measure first, right?
02:38We have to measure, yeah.
02:39My next challenge was measuring and shopping.
02:42We have to make sure we purchase things that are actually going to fit in the space.
02:46So here's where it gets fun.
02:48We went all around the room with a tape measure and a notepad, marking down how much space was available.
02:54We measured the carpet space, the bed frame, and more.
02:59And then we left to shop.
03:01One amazing idea that my mom had early on was that we should get a decorative painter to paint with
03:07a stencil on our closet doors.
03:09So while we were out shopping, the artist came over and made a major transformation.
03:14The closet doors were big and boring before, so we decided to bring a little pattern into the room.
03:20She used a neutral, almost copper color, and we asked her to fade it in and out a bit so
03:26that it would have some depth and life.
03:27And when it was done, we could not believe how just one wall could transform an entire room.
03:34Then we returned for the final challenge, putting it all together.
03:39And remember, the final part is the fun part.
03:42We began by clearing out the old stuff, rolling up the rug, taking off the bedding, and removing the dresser.
03:49And then we started bringing in the new stuff.
03:52Our new white dresser, new bedspread, and a lamp.
03:58Let there be light!
03:59We changed up the headboard by throwing a blanket over it.
04:02Very innovative.
04:04And then made a decision about what to hang over the bed.
04:07We tried out a couple different options.
04:10All of them were my mom's paintings.
04:12You like it?
04:13Yeah.
04:13Should we look at the other alternative?
04:15Sure.
04:16And ultimately settled on a set of three.
04:18This is better.
04:20Yeah.
04:20I think so, too.
04:21I'm glad we tried it.
04:22The colors that we picked for the room were very intentional.
04:25The blues on the edges of the paintings picked up the blue color of the lamp.
04:29Many of the accent pieces echo the neutral and copper feel of the closet stencil.
04:34The bedding is mostly white with pops of blue.
04:37Our rug has a blue pattern on it that works nicely with the lamp and also feels similar
04:42to the design of the stencil.
04:44We brought in a full-length mirror to lean up against the wall and placed a little poof
04:49on the floor that worked nicely with the patterns and colors.
04:53Wow.
04:54We hung up a set of three copper diamond mirrors, bringing out that copper accent again
04:59and also amplifying the light in the room, as mirrors tend to do.
05:03Michael came home in the middle of our project, so thankfully we commissioned his help to hang
05:08up a very heavy picture.
05:10And after a few finishing touches, we were done.
05:14It's amazing.
05:17I'm tempted to jump on the bed.
05:19Don't you dare.
05:23Walking in afterwards felt like we were entering an entirely new space.
05:27It was brighter, more colorful, more creative, and it even felt bigger.
05:33I'm so grateful to have had the chance to work with my mom and see how she makes her magic
05:38happen.
05:39If I learned anything from her, it's that making something beautiful doesn't need to be expensive.
05:44Get crafty, mix and match, and don't be afraid to make bold design decisions.
05:49So if anybody's interested in being a designer, start with your own space.
05:54It's the creativity and the mix between things you love, things you make, and things you purchase.
06:01Hope you like our new space, and we'll see you next time on Lucy for Hire.
06:05You love it?
06:05I'm digging it.
06:06And happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.
06:09Thank you, guys.
