00:00Use it when you want something a little bit more luxurious, a little bit more...
00:06It's $50!
00:08Hey guys, it's Mi-Anne and this is Beauty With Me.
00:10My bathroom is disgusting!
00:13Well, it was until I finally stopped complaining and did something about it.
00:17My good finding coworker, Lindsay Sanberry, just penned a book.
00:20It's called Money Diaries.
00:22It is the physical culmination of our column by the same name
00:25that catalogs the real-life expenses of women all over the world.
00:30I always thought that changing my bathroom and making it more palatable
00:34would be a really massive expense.
00:37But after reading Lindsay's book, which isn't all about beauty,
00:40but does have some self-care elements to it,
00:42I decided to figure out some ways that I could make my bathroom a little bit more pleasant
00:46without spending thousands and thousands of dollars renovating it.
00:49I used to walk into my bathroom and want to immediately leave it.
00:54I hated its awful green walls.
00:56I hated the dingy bathtub.
00:59I hated the lack of organization.
01:01So I decided that I was going to figure out different ways
01:04to get my bathroom to look like a spa and feel like a spa
01:08for $25, $100 and $750.
01:13Before we get into it though, please make sure you are subscribed down below
01:17and check the description bar for more info on Money Diaries.
01:20First off, it's how to turn your bathroom into a spa for under 25.
01:23At the bare minimum, a bathroom should be a place where you can get clean,
01:28do your business, and also relax.
01:30You don't really need to shell out for hundreds of dollars worth of lotions
01:33and aromatherapy oils.
01:35You can if you want to, and we'll get to that later.
01:37But you can do things that are very affordable,
01:41will still make you feel like you're having this luxurious experience.
01:44The first thing that I did was make a DIY salt scrub,
01:48and this was so affordable and you can make tons of it.
01:51I just bought some grapeseed oil
01:53and a little bit of pink Himalayan salt.
01:56Mix equal parts of salt and the grapeseed oil
01:59and then lather up in the shower, scrub, scrub, scrub away,
02:02and you have nice smooth skin.
02:04I love grapeseed oil because it's a very lightweight oil,
02:07so it absorbs relatively quickly.
02:09And after you scrub your body, you can hop out
02:12and you don't have to put moisturizer on
02:14because you already have the oil on your skin.
02:16I saved you time too.
02:18After the body scrub, I decided to make a really affordable DIY mask.
02:23So really, all you need for this is some bentonite clay.
02:25I used some from a brand called Aztec Secret,
02:27and you can just mix it with pretty much anything.
02:30You can just make a very simple clay mask with just the clay and water.
02:34Put that on your face and let it absorb oil, dirt, debris, that sort of thing.
02:38But you can also give it a little bit more horsepower
02:40by adding something like honey for hydration, tea tree oil for cleansing,
02:44or yogurt for the little lactic acid exfoliation.
02:47Now, although DIY body scrubs and masks can definitely make you feel pampered,
02:52I wanted to do a little something to make the space feel better.
02:55So I went to the store and I got a $4 bunch of eucalyptus,
02:59grabbed some hamstring and some scissors,
03:01and tied my eucalyptus to the base of my shower head.
03:04It doesn't just make your bathroom look infinitely more beautiful,
03:07but it also smells amazing when the hot water is on.
03:10It kind of releases the steam and the essential oils kind of come out,
03:13and you smell like you're in a spa.
03:15If you close your eyes, maybe you're not in your bathroom.
03:18But then you open your eyes and you are.
03:20So the grand total for all of that was $24.38.
03:23Next up, here are some things you can do to turn your bathroom into a spa for under $100.
03:27This is a section for those of you who want to do a little bit more,
03:31you want to buy a few more luxurious things, but you don't want to go too far.
03:35In my case, this immediately brought me to candles.
03:39I just discovered this new candle brand called Otherland,
03:42and they make stunning candles.
03:44I have the scent, it's called stone fruit, and it smells like stone fruits.
03:50It smells good, it smells sweet, and they retail for $36,
03:53which is kind of the largest, but it's not the most you could spend on the candle.
04:00So they retail for $36.
04:01They look beautiful on a bathroom shelf or on your bathtub, so I recommend.
04:06Next up, this is something that you can do to kind of feel like you're in a spa,
04:09but you are in a spa and you didn't spend like $150 for a treatment.
04:13Last year, I went and got a facial from esthetician Renee Rouleau,
04:16and toward the tail end of the treatment, she used these little frozen toner bits
04:20to shrink my pores and also soothe my skin.
04:24This is something really fun and actually a real treat to do at home.
04:28I used Renee's energy boosting toner, which is a great toner.
04:32It has ginseng in it, it's very soothing, it doesn't make my skin feel tight or dry.
04:36I poured a little bit of this into ice cube trays, stuck it in the freezer,
04:39held tight for a few hours while it froze.
04:41Then I popped those suckers out, glided it on my skin after cleansing
04:45to soothe and tighten and all that good stuff.
04:48This is kind of a fun little treat you can do for yourself at home.
04:52After my face is cleansed and toned, I like to whip out this Jade Gua Saw tool.
04:56I learned this facial massage technique from an acupuncturist named Sandra Lanshan.
05:00She actually did acupuncture on me, and I really like it because it doesn't just feel really good
05:06and it's very relaxing, it simulates lymphatic drainage and circulation,
05:09but it's also a really nice and easy way to apply your facial oil.
05:14Obviously, you can swap out different items to keep costs low.
05:16You can obviously squirt a little more if you want something a little bit more luxurious,
05:19but these are just a few tips.
05:21My total for this round was $98.50.
05:25Now, here is the big expense.
05:27These are the things that I did for my bathroom to kind of turn it into a bit more of
05:30a spa-like environment
05:31for under $750.
05:33I love a good oil, scrub, whatever, but it didn't really change the fact that my walls were still green,
05:39my bathroom was still kind of dingy, and I just wanted to do things to overall just brighten it up.
05:44The first thing I did was remove the horrible green walls in my bathroom and paint it white.
05:50I was so, so shocked at what a huge difference a few layers of paint and a couple of hours
05:57could make instantly brightened up the room,
05:59and it cost me like $60 for all the supplies.
06:02I also switched out the tungsten light bulb in favor of an energy-saving LED one in a daylight setting,
06:09and this was also, like, as soon as I turned that light on, we were all just like,
06:14it was so, like, gross and yellow before, and now it's so bright and open.
06:17It makes it so much easier to put on makeup in the bathroom.
06:20I don't know why I didn't do it sooner, but I didn't stop there.
06:22I have been eyeing rugs from a brand called Cold Picnic for years and years and years,
06:28but I never really bit the bullet in terms of buying one.
06:32I purchased two mats.
06:33The kind of more abstract one is called Sleeping Giant, and then their most popular bath mat is called The
06:38Torso.
06:38Not only is the brand Brooklyn-based, but the textiles are absolutely beautiful and they are also washable.
06:46I'm obviously only keeping one of these in my bathroom, so let me know in the comments down below which
06:50one you think would work better in the space.
06:53To deal with all the clutter on all the surfaces of my bathroom, I went to TJ Maxx and got
06:58a bunch of little baskets on sale.
07:00I have a lot of beauty products, and I had so many of them, like, stashed on my bathtub, on
07:04shelves.
07:05I decided to put them all in a few baskets.
07:06It made it look so much more organized.
07:08So I used to have my cleaning products just, like, on the floor, around the sink, which was really very
07:13unattractive.
07:14So I got a nice little basket as well and put it on the floor, put all my cleaning products
07:18in there, and I'm telling you,
07:19it might be the thing that gives me the most joy when I walk into the bathroom.
07:23Like, I thought it would be the paint, but actually just not seeing, like, random toilet cleaner on the sink
07:28and in a nice basket makes me very, very happy.
07:30When I was brainstorming for this video, I started to think about some things that spas always have in their
07:36waiting rooms and in their bathrooms
07:37to make it look really nice and relaxing, and I landed on greenery.
07:42Now, I don't have any windows in my bathroom, so having little succulents or hanging plants in the bathroom was
07:47kind of not an option.
07:48If you have a window, you should get real plants, but I couldn't.
07:51I got a few fake plants and put them on shelves and on different areas of the bathroom just to
07:55make it look a little bit more natural and warm and inviting.
07:58So I've been looking to switch out my shower head for something a little bit more water efficient.
08:02The average flow rate for, like, a typical shower head is about 2.1 gallons per minute.
08:06I want something lower than that.
08:08So I found this really awesome shower head called the Raindrop shower head.
08:12It costs $120, and it has a filter on it, and the filter should be replaced every six months, and
08:18it costs about $53.
08:19So the filter filters out bacteria, algae, chlorine, and other trace minerals, and according to the brand,
08:25it can help improve the texture of your skin and your hair and keep your color fresher longer.
08:30I've only been using it for about a week, so it's too soon to tell whether or not it's really
08:34improving my hair,
08:35although I used it last night, and I'm really into what my hair looks right now.
08:38But I'll definitely update you guys in another video.
08:40If you guys are interested in that, please let me know down below.
08:42While in the shower, I think it's sometimes fun to indulge in a fancy shower oil.
08:47This one from Diptyque is my favorite.
08:49This fella is $50, which is expensive for what is essentially a glorified body wash, but it is absolutely beautiful.
08:56I don't think you should use it every day.
08:57I think you should use it on the days that you really want to pamper yourself.
09:00When you want a kind of body wash slash hydrating product slash aromatherapy product in one,
09:07it leaves my skin feeling super good.
09:08A couple pumps cleans your entire body.
09:10After you shower, you can still kind of smell the product like lingering on your skin.
09:15I know this because I had a crew member confirm.
09:17The next product seems a little gimmicky, but trust me, it works.
09:23The Acquisse Hair Towel.
09:25It is a hair towel that dries your hair faster and causes less friction on the hair.
09:31So I, personally, with color treated hair, try not to heat style it.
09:35I never blow dry my hair.
09:36But it's annoying when I shower before I go to bed and my hair is not dry when I go
09:40to bed.
09:40So I've been using this.
09:42It works.
09:43It dries your hair so much faster.
09:44My hair feels so much softer since I've been using it.
09:46So before hopping out of the shower, I like to use a moisturizer or a body oil to hydrate.
09:51And this one, it's the Pure Radiance Body Oil from True Botanicals, is expensive.
09:55It's $48.
09:56But it is the best body oil I've ever used.
10:00It is ridiculously lightweight.
10:02It absorbs in seconds.
10:04It smells amazing.
10:06It truly smells like a spa.
10:08I used to kind of think that a robe was like an extra unnecessary thing to have
10:13because you can just put your pajamas on.
10:15But I did get a robe and it is really nice.
10:18I got a really affordable one for $15.
10:20It's just black.
10:21It feels really soft.
10:22It has like this extra little tie places.
10:24It doesn't come out all the time when you're wearing it.
10:26I'm a robe person now.
10:28Last but not least, if you want something a little bit more powerful than the Guasa tool,
10:33I suggest getting a facial treatment like this one.
10:37This is the NuFace Trinity Treatment.
10:39It costs $325, but you can get the mini version for $199.
10:44And I'm not going to lie to you guys, that's very expensive.
10:46However, my hook current technology is great for improving the tone, the contouring,
10:51and the overall texture of your skin.
10:54This is an at-home version, so it is less powerful than what an esthetician would use on your skin
10:58at a spa,
10:58but it is something that you can use multiple times a week.
11:02If it's something that you want to splurge for, go for it.
11:05But if not, obviously, there are a lot of other things in this video that you can get as well.
11:08So that is it. Everything that I've done in my bathroom over the past month, pretty much,
11:14for under $25, $100, and $750.
11:16I cannot tell you how thrilled I am with the NuSpace.
11:20Walking into my bathroom isn't a debilitating experience anymore.
11:24Now, there's a beautiful white wall, a beautiful daylight bulb, nice-smelling things around me.
11:33My cat started sleeping in the bathroom.
11:36At the very least, it's kitty-approved.
11:38But please let me know down below if there's anything that you've done to your bathroom
11:40to make it feel a little bit more zen.
11:42I would love to do more things.
11:44And also, let me know while you're at it what you'd like to see on Beauty With Me next.
11:47See you next time. Bye!
