00:04Well, five days of learning Spanish.
00:12Buenos días.
00:14This week I'm challenging myself a little bit differently.
00:17Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the world after Mandarin.
00:21And fun fact, 18.2% of New Yorkers speak Spanish.
00:24I studied it in high school, but I've definitely lost my touch
00:27and have forgotten most of what I've learned.
00:29I actually took a couple of Italian classes in college,
00:32which really messed me up because now I'm speaking, like, Spitalian Glish.
00:36And I really need to start from square one.
00:38My plan today is to recap the basics.
00:41Numbers, colors, tenses, conjugations, fruits, vegetables.
00:45So earlier this morning I took a post-it note and a marker and I labeled my life away.
00:50These are pretty much the everyday objects that would be one of the first things you learn
00:53when taking a language class.
00:55It is slowly coming back to me, but I think that putting down these labels on Monday
00:59is great because now it gives me five full days to let these words sink in.

01:14I'm home from work early today because I wanted to come back home and continue quizzing myself.
01:18When I started yesterday I was feeling so energized.
01:21I was ready to go.
01:22I felt like it was going to be a piece of cake to pick this back up.
01:24I'm coming to the conclusion that relearning a language is not like riding a bike.
01:28These past two days have kind of gotten me back into that mental flow of being a student again.
01:33I haven't studied for a test in two years and I feel like challenging myself this way
01:37has enhanced my communication skills in my outside life.
01:41Learning a new language is supposed to improve your memory, enhance your listening skills,
01:44and improve your ability to multitask.
01:46Is it possible that I already feel more well-spoken and engaged in my outside life
01:51just from these two days that I've spent studying Spanish?

02:02So I'm picking up on sentence structure, I'm relearning the vocab words,
02:06but I think a huge part of learning another language
02:07is being able to enunciate and pronunciate the words properly.
02:11Today I'm sitting down with Hilde, a Refinery29 employee.
02:14She's from the Dominican Republic, Spanish is her very first language.
02:18Hopefully she can teach me some tips and tricks to make sure that I am rolling my R's right.
02:23So the importance about like knowing where to stress the word,
02:26or if to stress it or not, is because if you don't stress it, some words mean different things.

02:32The neighborhood I'm from, el barrio de donde soy, barrio, means neighborhood.
02:37And then you can also, oh, I'm sweeping today.
02:41Barrio hoy, it's sweeping.

03:11And you almost like put your tongue in the back of your back teeth and push it out.

03:17Are my teeth going to start to move?
03:23Speaking with a friend who's fluent in Spanish was really, really helpful,
03:26but I need this cultural immersion all day long.
03:30So look at what I'm doing today.
03:31My cell phone is an item that I use all day.
03:34So today I'm going to change its settings so that it speaks to me in Spanish.
03:39Change to Spanish.
03:41It's cambiandoing the idioma.
03:43It's done!
03:45Whoa.
03:46I'm hoping that changing my phone to Spanish will help me become more conversational with
03:50words that are part of everyday culture.
03:51There's so much that goes into learning a language.
03:54It really takes time, dedication, practice, and repetition to get it right.
