00:00Hey guys, it's Lucie Fink and welcome back to the next Try Living with Lucie dance episode.
00:05Woohoo!
00:06Can you guess what today's dance is?
00:08When I asked my Instagram which dance styles I should try for 5 Days of Dance,
00:12I got a ton of requests for Bollywood dancing.
00:15Now this is one dance style that I myself have never tried,
00:19but aesthetically I've always been drawn to the dance form because of the energy and the colors and the costumes.
00:24So this episode was the perfect excuse for me to try it out.
00:28I discovered Serena Jain, a dance instructor at Ailey Extension and the founder of the Indian dance style Masala Bhangra.
00:35It's an Indian dance program that combines Bhangra and Bollywood.
00:38I ask you to channel your masculine side with Bhangra and your feminine grace with Bollywood
00:43and you put it together and you get Masala Bhangra.
00:45You learn all the moves in one hour and then at the end you jam it out as if you
00:48can be in a Bollywood movie.
00:50A few things. When we dance we move our head.
00:52And we move our head to the point where we close your eyes and we feel a beat of the
00:55music,
00:56let ourselves go completely because now you're dancing Bollywood.
01:00She walked me through some typical moves that she teaches in her classes.
01:03Your first move is called Dole Beat.
01:05So five, six, right leg goes.
01:08One and two and three, left side.
01:10Five and six and seven, right side.
01:13I learned Bolly Bolly Knees.
01:14Move your head side to side, okay?
01:16So you're going to move it.
01:16You're going to go right, left, right, left.
01:19One and two, three, clap it out.
01:21Move your head, move your head, move your head.
01:23Tick tock.
01:24And two and three and four.
01:26The Bollywood butterfly.
01:27Right toe, left.
01:28The Bollywood snake.
01:30Snake your arms, snake your arms.
01:32You're going to take your hand over your heart and you're going to be like oh my god,
01:34go back and forth like wow.
01:36You just totally fell in love.
01:38Seven, go.
01:39Right leg, left leg, hands over your heart.
01:41Five, six, drop your head, go.
01:43Right leg, left leg, five, six, seven, hold.
01:49That was fun.
01:50I like that move.
01:51Yeah?
01:51I think you're a pro.
01:52I really, I think you're amazing.
01:54Now keep in mind, these are terms that she created to make the dance simpler to grasp
01:58and the moves more doable.
02:00And because she's developed her own kind of dance fitness, today's lesson was really a deep
02:04dive into Masala Bhangra rather than traditional Bollywood or traditional Bhangra dancing.
02:10Nice.
02:11She taught me bale bale, which means hooray or hurrah or woohoo.
02:17If you ever go to an Indian function, you don't know what to say and you stand in the
02:19middle crowd, you're going to go bale bale.
02:21And we were, of course, screaming it all day.
02:24Bale bale.
02:25One, two, one, two, three.
02:28Salve.
02:29Bale bale.
02:30Holt.
02:32Am I, am I doing well?
02:33In India they do high five.
02:34Oh, not low five.
02:35Never a low five.
02:36High five, high five.
02:37After I learned the dance, Serena put me in a Punjabi salvar.
02:40It's a combination of a little Bhangra and a combination of a little Bollywood.
02:44This is like known as a korta top.
02:46And of course, to add in the Bollywood elements, we glitzed it up a little bit.
02:50So the suit had rhinestones on the back of it.
02:52So these are traditional, like, patiala pants.
02:55All have the pleats and they're so good because, you know, you don't find these pleats as much
02:59anymore.
03:00Can I go behind the tree and get changed?
03:01You could do that.
03:02It's very bizarre that you just said let me go behind the tree because that's very Bollywood.
03:11I love it.
03:13I love it.
03:13I love it.
03:15I love it.
03:15Okay, so now let's complete it, okay, by giving you a bindi.
03:19A bindi in the old days, it used to mean that a woman was married.
03:22Times have changed.
03:24Now a piece of jewelry that completes the Indian outfit.
03:26Madonna has sported it.
03:27You know, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, sported it all in their music videos that they've
03:30done.
03:31So if I ever wear an Indian outfit and I don't have a bindi on, I will feel very naked.
03:34This is more of a Bhangra effect for sure.
03:37But, you know, if you see Bollywood movies today, Dil Boleh Haripa, which means my heart
03:41goes, whoo!
03:42Dil Boleh Haripa.
03:43It's a great Bollywood movie.
03:44I love it.
03:45So you'll see a lot of the dance moves, a lot of the songs.
03:48You know, the girls are wearing this outfit during Bollywood and Bhangra moves.
03:51It's awesome.
03:51Here we go.
03:52Lucy, you ready?
03:53I'm ready.
03:54Ballet Ballet!
04:42I had so much fun today learning about the Indian culture, the clothing, the music,
04:47and more.
04:47And every Masala Bhangra class is not only an awesome way to learn about that culture,
04:51but it's also a total full body workout that had me dripping sweat.
04:56And she did awesome.
04:57And you know what was beautiful about her is she has such an open spirit to try anything,
05:02trying on the outfit and the bindi.
05:04Now she just has to put on the makeup and go to an Indian party.
05:06And then I hope she takes me with her.
