00:00Today's 29 Second History is all about menstrual cups, a reusable bell-shaped cup of medical-grade
00:05silicone. The first menstrual cup was invented in 1884 by Hiram G. Farr. These cups were made
00:11with an elastic material. One section went inside the vagina and the other collected menstrual fluid
00:16outside in a receptacle, usually attached to a belt. The first modern menstrual cups,
00:21similar to the ones we know today, were invented in 1937 by American actress Liana Schalmers.
00:26These cups were made from latex rubber and worked without belts. In the beginning of the 21st century,
00:32the latex cups were replaced by a new material, medical-grade silicone. Now women with latex
00:37allergies could safely use menstrual cups. Silicone is still used by most companies today. Menstrual
00:42cups are becoming more popular worldwide, with many different brands, shapes, and sizes on the
00:47market. They're convenient, cost-effective, and sustainable. Unlike disposable period products,
00:52menstrual cups can be used for years. This decreases plastic waste by about one truckload per person
00:58every 10 years.
