*Spain evacuates last passengers from hantavirus-hit cruise ship
*Israel intensifies attacks against Southern Lebanon
Transcript
00:11Venezuela finished on Monday. Its second round of oral arguments at the International Court
00:16of Justice were acting present that Rodriguez defended the nation's sovereign rights over
00:22the Guayana Zequiva. The last passengers from the cruise ship MV Honjos, hit by a deadly
00:31antivirus outbreak, were evacuated from Spain on Monday.
00:38And Lebanon-intensive-fired Israeli attacks across the south have killed at least nine
00:43people since early Tuesday.
00:52Hello welcome from the south, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Tresu Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:57We begin with the news.
01:12In Chile, university students demonstrated on Monday in front of the Ministry of Education
01:17in downtown San Santiago in response to the budget cuts to the education sector announced
01:22by the government of Jose Antonio Caste. Let's recall that under the Caste administration,
01:27the Ministry of Finance has implemented a fiscal austerity policy that directly affects resources
01:33destined toward the sector, with the largest cuts concentrated in the state-guaranteed student
01:38loan, free university tuition and funds allocated for school infrastructure. In this context,
01:44mobilizers in the rally, called by the Chilean Student Confederation, urged the government to
01:51open a channel of dialogue. In addition, they sought to deliver a letter to Minister Maria Paz-Arzola,
01:57where the organization stressed the measure is not merely a budgetary issue but would directly affect
02:10the working class. Although no actual code to free education has been confirmed, they have made it very clear that
02:19they will not be expending social benefits in the area of education and will be cutting various scholarship and benefits
02:25that we believe are essential for students.
02:29And Venezuela finished on Monday its second round of oral arguments at the International Court
02:35of Justice with the presence of the acting president of the country, Nelson Rodríguez. The discussion
02:40took place at the Peace Palace in the Heg under the presidency of Judge Iwasawa Yuji, who is
02:46the president of the court and also with the presence of Venezuela's acting president, Nelson Rodríguez,
02:50who arrived in the Netherlands on Sunday with the goal of defending the country's historical
02:55rights over Guaya and Ezequiva territory. Upon her arrival, Rodriguez expressed she seeks to promote
03:01the defense of international law, redefining the Bolivarian nation's sovereign rights over the Ezequivo.
03:13And after her statement before the International Court of Justice, acting president, Nelson Rodríguez,
03:19reiterated that the 1966 Geneva agreement is the only legitimate mechanism for resolving the territorial dispute.
03:29The truth about Venezuela has been brought to light, and that is our greatest satisfaction.
03:35What matters is understanding that this is the only mechanism that exists, one that is, furthermore,
03:41a practically unprecedented agreement. There is no other international agreement on a similar level to the
03:47Geneva agreement, which seeks to resolve a dispute through political dialogue and peaceful negotiations.
03:54We have confirmed that Venezuela is ready and prepared to move forward with direct negotiations.
04:01We will not recognize the outcome of this process, which seeks to bring a shameful situation before the
04:07court, such as attempting to validate a fraud that occurred 127 years ago in Venezuela.
04:14Because we ourselves will be committing an act of international illegality. At the end of the road,
04:20there is only one option left. That option is direct negotiation.
04:28The acting president also highlighted the work of the Venezuelan legal team, which since 2018 has proven the
04:34illegality of the 1899 Paris Arbitral Award. I want to highlight the professionalism of this team and
04:43ensure that it is remembered in history. Since 2018, this team has demonstrated this illegality. They have shown that
04:51the 1899 award was reached and that fraud cannot govern relations or resolve disputes. I congratulate them, and I hope
04:59that the people of Venezuela, with their pride in being Venezuelan, understand their efforts,
05:04that has been made. And we know this is the case. As acting president, it is an honor for me
05:10to address a fundamental issue for a country, such as sovereignty and territorial integrity.
05:20The Venezuelan government has filed a formal protest against UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres over
05:25statements it considers to be contrary to the organization's principles. The Venezuelan government
05:31affirmed the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela's running protest the statements made by United Nations Secretary
05:36General Antonio Guterres regarding the Venezuelan state as it considers them to contain assertions
05:41unbecoming of its high office and contrary to the principles of objectivity, prudence, impartiality,
05:47and good faith established in the Charter of the United Nations. In addition, the document said
05:52these statements reflect the progressive deterioration of a sectarian general incapable of effectively
05:59contributing to peace and the resolution of the major conflicts that today shake humanity to its core,
06:05while the genocide against the Palestinian people, the spread of wars, and the application of
06:09unilateral coercive measures against sovereign peoples persist. The Secretariat General maintains a
06:14stance of silence or ambiguity that undermines its moral authority. Never before has the United
06:21Nations faced such a profound erosion of its credibility in the eyes of the peoples of the world.
06:26The Secretariat has been unable to ensure balance and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter in
06:31the face of current global challenges. The statement concluded the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela recalls that
06:37Article 100 of the Charter of the UN supplies the Secretary General to act with neutrality,
06:43impartiality, and independence, preserving the legitimacy of the organization and respect for international law.
06:55The Venezuelan government statement comes after United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres suggested,
07:01without evidence, that the U.S. attack on Venezuela the past January 3 occurred with complicity within the
07:07national political system. The allegations come despite senior officials of the Venezuelan government
07:12having categorically denied the possibility on multiple occasions. The remarks reflect the progressive
07:17deterioration of the UN Secretariat, a body unable to contribute effectively to peace and to the resolution of the
07:23major conflicts that today shape humanity.
07:32And among other topics, we would like to announce that our news platform,
07:36Telesur in Venezuela, has signed a cooperation agreement with VTV International Vietnam as part of a strategic
07:42framework to expand and diversify news coverage in the Global South. This agreement signed in the city of
07:48Caracas establishes a continuous flow of content exchange and international coverage between the
07:53two parties. Therefore, the agreement represents a first concrete step towards a media partnership that
07:59connects the realities of Southeast Asia and Latin America from a shared perspective. Furthermore,
08:05Representative Tanan Thi Thuha, Director of VTV International, and Patricia Villegas Marin,
08:10President of Telesur, highlighted the coverage of Vietnamese and Latin American realities through
08:15strategic areas such as politics, economic, culture, tourism, health, sports and gastronomy.
08:21Consequently, both organizations are committed to providing quality information and acting as a
08:26technical bridge between cultures. Likewise, the collaboration promotes a more inclusive vision of
08:31the world, overcoming hegemonic narratives and enabling a direct understanding of shared challenges.
08:45And former Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno appeared before the National Court of Justice of Ecuador
08:51to stand trial in the Sino-Hydro case for alleged crimes. The prosecution accuses him, along with his
08:57family and 35 other people, of receiving $76 million in bribes from the Chinese company Sino-Hydro.
09:04According to the investigation, the payments are allegedly linked to the award of the Coca-Cola St.
09:10Clear Hydro Electric Project, the largest construction project in the country. The former president's
09:15return has sparked accusations from the opposition regarding an alleged impunity pact with the current
09:20government. It's worth noting that with 37 initial suspects, the Sino-Hydro case is emerging as one of
09:26the most emblematic corrupt cases of the last decade in Ecuador.
09:34We're out of our first break. Stay with us.
09:57Welcome back. The sailing ship Astro, belonging to the non-governmental organization Open Arms, set sail from
10:03Barcelona heading for Cuba as part of a society fleet to support childhood healthcare on the island.
10:09The mission, comprising more than 20 social and political organizations, will transport solar
10:14equipment, medicines and food to ensure pediatric intensive care. The Astro will undertake a journey
10:20of approximately one month, and before crossing the Atlantic Ocean, it will make stops in various
10:25Spanish cities where cultural representatives and public figures will join to support this humanitarian
10:30effort. Director of Open Arms stated that the mission seeks to uphold the tradition of international
10:36solidarity of the Cuban medical brigades. The photovoltaic system is intended to ensure steady
10:41electricity supply in the intensive care unit for the care of newborns and vulnerable populations.
10:53The last passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius, hit by a deadly antivirus outbreak, were evacuated from
10:59Spain on Monday. According to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the last two evacuation planes carrying
11:0428 passengers and crew from the ship have landed in the Netherlands. The evacuees, four from Australia,
11:10one from New Zealand, and one British resident of Australia, are expected to stay in quarantine
11:16facility near the Indochelmen Air Base before they are repatriated. The arrival caps a complex operation in
11:23which 125 people have been evacuated and repatriated to some 23 countries. The task comes nine days after the
11:29first positive test result for the respiratory viral infection on board the ship amid an outbreak that
11:35has left free dead so far. And in this context, after the evacuation of all passengers from the virus-streaking
11:47cruise
11:47ship, the Spanish health minister acknowledged the success of the operation as WHO chief Tedros
11:54Gabriassus assured the country is receiving them that the risk of spread remains low.
12:01Mission accomplished. We have just successfully completed the operation. Between yesterday and today,
12:06we have evacuated all 125 passengers and crew members from 23 countries. They are either back in their home
12:13countries or, as you have just seen, are currently being transported there.
12:18And to the people of those countries who are receiving their citizens, nothing to fear. The risk is low. This
12:26is
12:26not another COVID.
12:32In the United Kingdom, lawmakers from the Labour Party are calling for the resignation of Keir Starmer,
12:37party leader and prime minister of the country following overwhelming losses in last week's local
12:43elections. The prime minister appears to have lost the confidence of his party as Labour lost more than
12:491,400 seats across English councils and control of the Welsh Parliament in last week's local elections.
12:56After the election results came out, more than 70 Labour lawmakers publicly called for Starmer to stand
13:02down, fearing he would not be capable of winning the next general election due by the summer of 2029.
13:08Meanwhile, his opponents would need 81 signatures in support of a challenger to trigger a leadership
13:15election in the party. In the UK, the public does not elect the prime minister if it is the monarch
13:21who
13:21appoints for the position the leader of the political party that gains a majority of seats in parliament,
13:26meaning that if Turner is removed as party leader, he also loses his position as prime minister.
13:42For his part on Monday, Keir Starmer vowed to maintain his position as prime minister of the United Kingdom,
13:48accepting responsibility for his party's growing unpopularity during a speech that failed to deliver
13:53concrete responses and did not win over the support of his party members.
13:58The election results last week were tough, very tough. We lost some brilliant Labour representatives.
14:08That hurts. And it should hurt. I get it. I feel it. And I take responsibility.
14:21But it's not just about taking responsibility for the results. It's about taking responsibility
14:29to explain how, as a political and electoral force, we will be better and do better in the months and
14:38years ahead. Because we are not just facing dangerous times, but dangerous opponents, very dangerous opponents.
14:51This hurts not just because Labour has done badly, but because if we don't get this right,
14:59our country will go down a very dark...
15:07And in Vietnam's capital, a fire destroyed a nightclub and left at least one person dead.
15:12Massive flames tore through the Volume Club Karaoke Bar in Hanoi on Monday, reducing the building to ruins
15:18and leaving one person dead. The fire, which sent plumes of thick smoke over the area, faced the firefighters
15:24for hours completely destroying the building, leaving behind charred debris and collapsed floors.
15:30Meanwhile, authorities sealed off the area, searched for possible victims and brought the fire largely
15:35under control by noon. According to local media, the blaze may have been sparked by an electrical circuit,
15:42but the exact cause remains under investigation.
15:50Meanwhile, in China, a fire at a residential building in Hunan Province resulted in at least five people
15:55being killed and two others being injured. According to the local Emergency Management Bureau,
16:01this is the third residential building fire in the country, so far this May. The injured are receiving medical treatment,
16:07while authorities begin investigation.
16:10This is being done to determine the cause of the fire, given the history of previous fires,
16:15in which Hunan human error was found to be the cause.
16:24And in Malaysia, 23 people were rescued and 14 are still missing after a boat carrying Indonesian migrants capsized.
16:33Authorities in Malaysia have launched a search and rescue mission for missing people
16:37after a boat carrying 37 undocumented migrants sank off its western coast.
16:42In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said local fishermen
16:47have rescued 23 people so far. And that two of its vessels, assisted by the Marine Police,
16:55the Navy and members of the local fishing community, are involved in the search operation.
17:00Malaysia is home to millions of migrants from poorer parts of Asia, many of them undocumented,
17:05with estimates showing that between 100,000 and 200,000 Indonesians make the journey each year.
17:34Israeli attacks have intensified across southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire. Since the early hours of Tuesday,
17:40at least nine people have been killed and seven injured. According to Lebanon's national news agency,
17:46an overnight Israeli airstrike hit a house in Far Tunin in the Tayyar district, killing six people,
17:52while a drone attack on a vehicle in the town square of Douir killed three people.
17:57On the other hand, according to the national news agency, the Israeli military destroyed a solar-powered
18:03water pumping station in their Minas town and carried out a demolition operation in residential areas of
18:09Benchville. Moreover, Israeli warplanes have carried out a renewed and intensified wave of airstrikes
18:15across southern and eastern Lebanon since Tuesday morning, with the heaviest concentration of attacks
18:21reported in the Nabatia district.
18:31On Monday, the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah announced a series of defensive operations against
18:36the Israeli aggression. Previously, Hezbollah had vowed to respond to any violations committed by the
18:42Israeli regime and has consistently carried out military operations targeting Israeli strongholds and
18:48assets in South Lebanon. On Monday, the resistance announced a multi-phase military operation
18:54targeting Israeli occupation forces which started early in the morning. As part of the operation,
19:00Hezbollah fighters targeted Israeli positions and military vehicles using FPV drones, prompting the
19:07occupation forces to call in reinforcements. These are part of the defensive operations carried out in
19:12southern Lebanon by the movement against Israeli occupation forces that, despite the ceasefire,
19:18continue its aggression against the Lebanese population.
19:26And thousands of Palestinians took to the streets of the city of Nablus in the north of the occupied
19:31West Bank on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the NAGMA and in rejection of the foreign
19:37Zionist aggression. The event which precedes the official date of May 15th became a massive demonstration
19:42reaffirming Palestinian identity against the Israeli occupation. Under a sea of Palestinian flags, civilians
19:49and local leaders sent a unified message to the world. The right of return and the defense of national
19:56sovereignty remained the non-negotiable pillars of the Palestinian cause, nearly eight decades after the
20:01mass displacement of 1948. The gathering included speeches from several local officials, including the mayor of
20:07Nablus and Alteida and the governor of Nablus, Hassan Douglas.
20:17And Brazilian activist Tiago Avila returned to his country after being detained for 10 days by Israeli authorities.
20:24He reported having suffered torture and witnessed abuses against Palestinian prisoners.
20:28Tiago Avila was welcomed at Guadulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo. The activists described the conditions
20:36of his detention which included isolation and other rights violations. Let's recall that Tiago Avila was
20:42detained on April 30th when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Smooth Flotilla which was attempting to
20:48break the blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
21:02During the 10 days we stayed there, Saif, a Swedish-Spanish man of Palestinian origin from a Palestinian
21:11family and I, we were victims of all kinds of abuse, but even so, it doesn't even compare to what
21:19our
21:19Palestinian brothers were going through in the cells next to us. We need no further examples to know that
21:27we are dealing with a terrorist state, that we are dealing with a prime minister who is a war criminal
21:33sought
21:33by the International Criminal Court for murdering children by starvation, which is the case with
21:40Benjamin Netanyahu at this moment, who has as his closest ally another war criminal, the leader of the
21:48greatest military power in the world and in history, and a pedophile named Donald Trump.
21:56And tensions between China and the United States are rising again following new sanctions imposed by
22:01Washington against Chinese companies accused of collaborating with Iran. The measure was
22:06announced just a day before the highly anticipated summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
22:10Bruno Fauci with the details from Beijing.
22:14Greetings comrades, here from Beijing, just days before Donald Trump's visit to China for the highly
22:21anticipated summit with the President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government denounced as illegal the United
22:28States sanctions against three space technology companies of China, accusing of providing satellite imagery to Iran.
22:38In a press conference, the foreign minister rejected the measures and criticized the use of unilateral sanctions
22:48against China, stating that they have no basis in international law and no authorization for the United Nations Security Council.
22:58The spokesperson Guo Xiaopu affirmed that China will defend the rights of its companies and call it for
23:06restraint on the international stage, emphasizing the need to avoid further escalation of tensions.
23:14Washington maintains that the companies provide the satellite imagery used by Iran in military operation against
23:25its United States forces in the Middle East. Beijing rejects these accusations and asserts that there is no
23:33detailed public evidence to support them, further defending the civilian and commercial nature of the Earth
23:43observation sector. The announcement was made on May 9 and is part of a new round of United States sanctions
23:54against networks linked to Iran in a context of the Operation Epic Furry.
24:02So far, there has been no announcement of retaliatory measures from China, which maintain a conscious diplomatic stance.
24:13So far from Beijing, we go back with you in the studios.
24:19Well, like this, we have come to the end of this news speech. You can find more on our website
24:22at
24:22www.telesoryenglish.net and also on our social media.
24:24For Telesory English, I'm with Alberto Matos. Thank you for watching.
