00:13Venezuela's acting president Osiris Rodriguez
00:15arrived in Netherlands with the goal of defending the country's historical rights
00:19over Guayana's Equiva before the International Court of Justice.
00:28The Colombian Election Observation Mission warns three weeks before the elections that
00:33the electoral authority's lack of regulations causes risks and threats the fairness of the process.
00:44And health authorities in Spain activated emergency protocols
00:47after 94 passengers landed from the cruise ship MV Honduras.
00:56Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:57I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dele Sur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:01We begin with the news.
01:15On Sunday, Venezuela's acting president Osiris Rodriguez arrived in the Netherlands with the goal of defending the country's historical rights
01:22over the Guayana's Equiva Territory and ensuring compliance with the Geneva Agreements.
01:27Upon arrival, Rodriguez expressed that she seeks to promote the defense of international law and the current norms that should
01:34govern the civilized world.
01:36In this context, she ratified the Bolivarian nation's sovereign rights over Diaz Equivo, noting that the country has proven to
01:42be the sole historical owner of that area since its Republican era and colonial administration.
01:48The jury is the subject of a dispute that Guayana has unilaterally initiated at the International Court of Justice in
01:55The Hague, with hearings underway until Monday, May 11th.
02:05First of all, I want to wish a happy Mother's Day to all the women who, through hard work, sacrifice
02:10and boundless love for their children, have embraced the role of motherhood.
02:14So happy Mother's Day to all the mothers of Venezuela.
02:19And here we are, standing up to defend the majesty and strength of the Geneva Agreement.
02:24We are defenders of international law, and it is Venezuela that has always raised the banner of legality and the
02:30defense of international law.
02:34So, it is an honor for me, as a Venezuelan and acting president, to be here as the voice of
02:39all of Venezuela and our people, defending our historic right over our Guayana's Equiva.
02:47From the Netherlands, Venezuela's acting president reaffirmed her commitment to defending the Geneva Agreement and the Bolivarian nation's sovereignty over
02:55Guayana's Equiva.
03:00It has become abundantly clear that Venezuela is the sole sovereign over this territory in this territorial dispute.
03:06We have demonstrated, throughout the history, the significance of our territory, from the moment we were born as a republic,
03:13and even before, when we were an administrative unit under colonial powers.
03:18Therefore, there is no doubt whatsoever. Venezuela is the sole sovereign over this territory, and we stand firm in our
03:25defense of the Geneva Agreement.
03:28In 1966, there was an agreement to put an end to and move past what was the shameful and fraudulent
03:35arbitral award of 1899.
03:41The government of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday recognized that the oil spill reported by Venezuela occurred at the main
03:48oil field.
03:50According to the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, Heritage Petroleum Company Limited quickly brought the incident under control.
04:00Environmental organizations in both countries assert that the spill was detected on May 1st, and Canadian minister Rodal Molinal, when
04:07asked about it on May 9th, said he was unaware of the incident.
04:11Environmental activists are asking why it was not reported, and they are calling attention to the extractive model in the
04:18region.
04:26And with less than three weeks until the first round of presidential election in Colombia, the electoral observation mission warns
04:33of the risks facing democracy due to delays by the National Electoral Council in regulating campaign finance advances.
04:39According to the director of the election observation mission, Alejandra Barrios, the regulation was supposed to be ready by January
04:4831st, when the candidate registration period began.
04:52Equity in campaign financing is a fundamental pillar for ensuring that all candidates can compete on an equal footing.
04:59The mission reports that several campaigns still lack access to essential resources to support basic activities such as logistics, advertising,
05:08mobilizations, and local presence.
05:10The election observation mission reports that at least six presidential campaigns have already formally requested advance funds, but have been
05:18unable to proceed due to the lack of clear regulations.
05:28And in Chile, two months after assuming the presidency of the country, the approval rating of the Pinochetist Jose Antonio
05:34cast falls to 36%.
05:36In this sense, the disapproval of the Chilean president remains at 51%.
05:41Additionally, 13% of respondents did not express an opinion on the government's performance.
05:45Despite having obtained a historic level of support at the polls, the CAAS administration has prioritized cuts and austerity policies,
05:54blaming its predecessor Gabriel Boric for leaving it with a supposedly bankrupt state.
05:59The figures reflect the growing discontent of Chilean citizens with a system that punishes the people.
06:13In our first break, stay with us.
06:35Welcome back.
06:37Home for this in Spain activated emergency protocols after 94 passengers landed from the cruise ship MV Hontius.
06:44The port of Granadilla on the island of Tenerife was a setting for the controlled landing of passengers from 19
06:51different countries.
06:53Furthermore, the operation was conducted under strict biosafety measures to avoid any risk of spread within Spanish territory.
06:59Health Minister Monica Garcia confirmed the complexity of the situation, described the day as intense,
07:05and confirmed the number of passengers who landed to be evaluated and placed under medical observation.
07:17Yeah, so our advice is clear, starting from May 10, 42 days with active follow-up, 42 days of quarantine.
07:32But it could be in a facility or at home.
07:37Of course, countries, we advise them, but at the end of the day, we don't impose.
07:44Countries follow their national guidelines and based on the risk assessment, they can implement.
07:52But our guidance is very clear, and it has already been released.
07:57In this regard, Spain's Minister of Health Monica Garcia confirmed the success of the rescue operation for 94 passengers on
08:03board the cruise ship MV Hontius.
08:08Today's operation, as you well know, it has been a quite intense day.
08:1394 people from 19 nationalities have disembarked.
08:17Eight nationalities were on seven of the flights, and 11 nationalities were on one of the flights to the Netherlands.
08:25The operation proceeded smoothly and safely.
08:30And on Monday, French health authorities confirmed a positive case of Hanta virus among passengers
08:37perpetuated from the cruise ship MV Hontius after a woman developed symptoms during the flight back to the country.
08:43Health Minister Stéphanie Rist reported that the patient's condition has deteriorated in the last few hours,
08:51while the other passengers remain under strict quarantine and medical supervision, given the risk of spread.
08:58The French government has activated special preventive measures as the virus incubation period can last up to six weeks.
09:05Also, dozens of people consider close contacts of the affected passengers are being monitored.
09:17Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron kicked off a visit to Kenya on Sunday ahead of the Africa Forward Summit,
09:24a gathering meant to showcase France's new policy for the continent.
09:28The summit is expected to draw reactions to the withdrawal of French troops from West Africa that was completed last
09:35year.
09:35Let's remember that since the independence of France's former African colonies,
09:40France had maintained a policy of economic, political, and military sway,
09:44which included keeping thousands of troops in the region.
09:48In this context, Kenya and President William Brutto said both leaders expect the summit to be a turning point
09:54toward a better partnership, while Macron commented on the changing geopolitical landscape,
09:59saying France can disagree with West African governments but never disagrees with the people.
10:04The two-day summit, which starts on Monday, is expected to welcome 30 heads of states.
10:15We believe that Africa is a continent, and that this continent has a great deal to build.
10:20It is the youngest in the world. It therefore has an extraordinary demographic dividend.
10:25It is the region with the highest growth in the world last year.
10:28However, its growth rate was slightly higher than that of Southeast Asia, and so we need to view it in
10:34a completely different light.
10:35And indeed, this is a continent that I no longer want France to view as its own private domain,
10:40where business leaders would, in a sense, have all the rights or have all contracts guaranteed to them,
10:46simply because it was Francophone Africa, or where some people felt that France provided a form of guaranteed security,
10:52come what may, by being there to make or break governments.
10:56That is over. Since 2017, that era has come to an end.
11:02And in this context, Kenyan President William Ruto congratulated the French President for his courage
11:08in recalibrating relations between Africa and France.
11:13And I want to say, and to congratulate President Macron for having the courage to recalibrate the relationship between Africa
11:25and France,
11:27to make it more inclusive. It's not about anglophone, francophone.
11:34I think, to broaden the conversation, make it much more inclusive.
11:41And Chinese Vice Premier Hillary Fan will travel to South Korea next Wednesday to hold economic and trade talks with
11:48the United States,
11:49ahead of the announced visit of U.S. President Trump to China this week.
11:53China's Ministry of Commerce reported that the trip was agreed upon by both sides and that he, Beijing's chief economic
12:02interlocutor with Washington,
12:05will travel to South Korea this Tuesday.
12:08According to the statement, the parties will be guided by the important consensus reached by Trump and Xi Jinping
12:14during their meeting in the South Korean city of Busan last October, as well as in their previous phone calls,
12:21and will hold consultations on economic and trade issues of common interest.
12:26U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besson will attend the meeting in South Korea,
12:30which will take place on the eve of Donald Trump's visit to China,
12:34scheduled by the White House for May 13 to the 15th.
12:43Now for our second and final break. Don't go away.
13:08Welcome back. The Global Sumut Flutilla confirmed the release on Sunday of activists Thiago Avila and Saif Aboukicek,
13:15following a week of cruel treatment and Israel's violations of a long list of rights and amid rights and social
13:21issues.
13:22Since they were kidnapped, their families and colleagues from the humanitarian initiative have denounced the endless list of crimes committed
13:30by the Israeli troops against Avila and Keshak.
13:34The two activists were arrested by Israel forces and held in Israel in late April after settling on a flutilla
13:40carrying aid for Gaza.
13:42The International Federation for Human Rights denounced the arrest as a flagrant violation of the law.
13:48During the arrest, they were denied their rights, due process and freedom.
14:00In that regard, activist Saif Aboukicek, who had been detained by Israel's Israeli authorities, arrived in Barcelona Sunday after 10
14:08days of illegal arrest.
14:09Keshak, of Palestinian origin and with Spanish-Swedish citizenship, remained in custody together with Brazilian activist Thiago Avila
14:17in international waters aboard a humanitarian flutilla bound for Gaza.
14:30Meanwhile, the Brazilian activist Thiago Avila arrived in Sao Paulo and was received by the pro-Palestinian militancy.
14:38After having been kidnapped by the Israeli occupying forces during the attack on the Global Sumut Flutilla,
14:44the flutilla team celebrated the news as a victory for popular mobilization and sustained pressure around the world.
14:52Avila was among the 211 people kidnapped by Israel on April 29th in international waters.
14:58Their return has reignited the global campaign against Israeli piracy and to break the criminal blockade of Gaza.
15:10The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and expatriates of the State of Palestine expressed its solidarity with Bahrain on Sunday
15:17and rejected any action or plan that would threaten the security and stability of the region.
15:23In an official statement, the Palestinian diplomatic corps reiterated its commitment to defending sovereignty, territorial integrity and peace in Arab
15:32countries.
15:33At the same time, it expressed its support for the measures taken by Bahrain to ensure the protection of its
15:39population and the maintenance of regional stability.
15:43It also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation and unity among Arab nations in the face of the challenges affecting
15:51the region's collective security arising from the attacks by the Sinai's regime.
16:02The Palestinian trade unions have issued an international call to workers, trade unions, professional associations and social movements around the
16:10world to step up boycott, divestment and sanction actions against Israel.
16:16The call for action seeks to step up global pressure on governments, companies and institutions that, according to Palestinian organizations,
16:24continue to be complicit in Israeli military operations and the blockade against Gaza.
16:29One of the most notable developments surrounding this mobilization took place in South Africa where activists submitted a legal petition
16:37to the Ministry of Trade and Industry demanding the immediate suspension of South African coal exports to Israel,
16:44trade unions, trade unions and labor organizations around the world, affirm that trade is not neutral if it contributes to
16:50the operation of structures that facilitate genocide.
17:01And in Iran, the high command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that countries are no longer intimidated by
17:08U.S. military threats.
17:09The high command emphasized that the U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran demonstrated that Washington can no longer impose fear with
17:17its military power,
17:18which has been repelled by direct Iranian fire when attempting to approach the Strait of Hormuz.
17:23The general of the brigade affirmed that the United States did not achieve its objective and is now asking other
17:30countries to deploy forces in the region,
17:32demonstrating that it can no longer be considered a source of security.
17:36In recent weeks, U.S. warships have been repelled while Iran maintains control over the Strait of Hormuz,
17:42a key passage for 20% of the world's oil, thus nullifying Washington's promises to restore maritime traffic.
17:55An Iran dismantled two terrorist cells linked to the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad in operations carried out in various regions
18:03of the country.
18:04According to a statement from the Persian nation's Ministry of Intelligence,
18:08the terrorists were planning attacks against Sajig facilities in Tehran, including the assassination of high-ranking Iranian officials.
18:15Several micro-drones, a band, and various weapons such as shotguns and rifles as well as Starlink satellite internet terminal
18:23were seized from those involved.
18:25These events are taking place amid growing tensions between Iran and Israel in the fields of security and intelligence.
18:36The Saudi company Aramco warned that global oil trade has lost nearly one billion barrels over the past two months
18:44amid instability in the international market due to the conflict in the Middle East.
18:48Industry advisor Amin al-Nasir noted that the energy sector was affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz,
18:55which led to a rise in crude oil prices.
18:58He also explained that the reopening of maritime routes does not imply a return to normal market prices, given the
19:04lack of investment in the sector.
19:06Despite the adjustment of maritime routes and the search for logistical alternatives, Asian markets continue to be the main driver
19:13of global demand for crude oil in the future.
19:22And French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday ruled out any French military deployment in the Strait of Hormuz and assured
19:29that Paris never considered sending warships to participate in operations against Iran.
19:34During a joint press conference in Nairobi with his Kenyan counterpart, William Brutto, the leader explained that France and the
19:42United Kingdom are promoting an international cooperation mission focused on guaranteeing maritime navigation and producing tensions in the region.
19:50About a report of the 나타ation in tensions.
19:50The statements follow a warning issued by Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Qasem Qariq
19:55Barbady, who assorted that any foreign military presence in support of U.S actions would receive a firm and immediate
20:01response.
20:02Meanwhile, Tehran insists that the Security of the Strait of Hormuz must remain under regional sovereignty and not under the
20:08control of external powers.
20:18And the United States is considering temporarily suspending the federal gasoline tax in response
20:23to rising fuel prices caused by the war with Iran.
20:26News Secretary Chris Wright said in an interview that the White House is willing to support
20:31measures that help reduce gas prices for consumers.
20:34According to the American Automobile Association, the average price of gasoline in the country
20:40has reached $4.52 per gallon, more than 50% above pre-conflict levels.
20:45The rise in fuel prices has also led millions of U.S. citizens to cut back on travel, drive
20:51less, and cut other domestic expenses.
21:00An Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged his fellow citizens to reduce fuel consumption
21:05in the face of the global energy crisis.
21:07Modi stated that it is necessary to resume working from home, such as online conferences
21:13and virtual meetings, to reduce energy consumption.
21:16The Indian leader emphasized that the current gasoline and diesel crisis has worsened.
21:22For this reason, it is the responsibility of citizens to reduce foreign currency spending
21:26on fuel purchases.
21:28Modi urged the public to avoid traveling abroad for at least a year, highlighting the many beautiful
21:35tourist destinations available within the country.
21:45Friends, we must reduce our use of petrol and diesel in cities with metro lines.
21:55We should try to travel by metro.
22:01We should travel by metro as much as possible.
22:05If we must use a car, then we should try to carpool.
22:15Given the current crisis, we must also place a strong emphasis on saving foreign exchange, as petrol
22:27and diesel have become so expensive globally.
22:33Prices have increased many times compared to before.
22:39Well, at this we have come to the end of this news brief.
22:41You can find more on our website at www.trestuenglish.net and also on our social media.
22:44So that's true English, I'm with Roberto Matos.
22:46Thanks for watching.
