00:00:00WBC Lightweight Champion, Jose Luis Ramirez, defends his title against Hector Macho Camacho.
00:00:06It's coming up next, right here on...
00:00:08I am the WBC Lightweight Champion of the World, and tonight, Camacho will not take the championship from me.
00:00:14He is going down.
00:00:19It was nine months ago that Jose Luis Ramirez rules from the canvas to score a dramatic knockout over Edwin Rosario
00:00:26to win the WBC Lightweight title.
00:00:28Now he faces an even tougher challenge.
00:00:31Unlike my opponent, you know who I am.
00:00:34I'm the Macho Man, and I am going to win my second title.
00:00:37Yeah, boy.
00:00:41Two years ago, Hector Macho Camacho won the Super Featherweight title by destroying Bazooka Limon.
00:00:47And now, after long stretches of inactivity, boxing's most flamboyant superstar is back.
00:00:53Tonight, we present two diverse characters in and out of the ring.
00:00:57The working man versus the entertainer.
00:01:06WBC Lightweight Champion, Jose Luis Ramirez, faces the challenge of Hector Macho Camacho.
00:01:11We're live at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, where HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
00:01:28Jose Luis Ramirez defends his lightweight title against Hector Macho Camacho.
00:01:33It's scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:01:35It's just after 7 o'clock Pacific time, and Macho Camacho hopes he'll treat his loyal fans to a little bit of macho time, as he likes to say, by winning his second world title.
00:01:48And for the champion, Jose Luis Ramirez, hanging on to his lightweight title is all in a night's work.
00:01:56Hello, everybody.
00:01:56I'm Barry Tompkins, along with Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Merchant, just about a capacity crowd here at the Riviera Hotel, here to see the challenger for the most part, Hector Macho Camacho.
00:02:06He's had only four fights in the last 14 months, Ray, and he's been less than impressive.
00:02:11Two years ago, if you looked at this fight and said, who's going to win, you'd say Macho Camacho.
00:02:15But tonight, there could be something of a question mark.
00:02:17Well, Barry, he's young, and he has what I call natural raw talent.
00:02:21One thing about this fight for Camacho tonight is the fact that it's a special fight for him because it stabilized his Boston career.
00:02:26I think second, and most importantly, his ex-trainer, Billy Giles, stated that his career was finished.
00:02:33I think he has a lot to prove tonight.
00:02:34So he's going to be the man with something to prove, and he is the favorite in this fight.
00:02:37And Larry Merchant, I think it is somewhat unusual that we seem to hear more about the challenger and know more about the challenger than we do about the champion.
00:02:45Well, there are some important things to know about the champion, and I think they can be told in part in the numbers.
00:02:5194 fights, 90 victories, 74 KOs, all four defeats at the hands of champions.
00:02:58He's what I call a truth machine as a fighter.
00:03:02That's because he's relentless, tough, strong, and well-conditioned.
00:03:06He keeps coming, and he keeps punching.
00:03:08So if a flashier or even more skilled fighter has a weakness, the truth will out against Ramirez.
00:03:15And there's one truth we have going into this fight.
00:03:18He is, I think, the best fighter that Camacho has ever fought.
00:03:21So it should be a great test for Hector Macho Camacho and for the champion.
00:03:25The champion's story, really, is one that's almost all too typical.
00:03:29Raised in a barrio, a tough kid, but a little kid.
00:03:31For that reason, he had to fight.
00:03:33As many times as you hear it, you still have to marvel at it.
00:03:38The barrios of Mexico seem to offer little more than poverty and despair.
00:03:43But every once in a while, a special someone comes along to challenge the hands of fate
00:03:48and wins a fight that couldn't be won.
00:03:50Someone who perseveres and sets a courageous example that gives hope to those left behind.
00:04:03Even though we were poor, I always managed to come out on top.
00:04:22I tried everything to better myself and my family.
00:04:25I used to sell newspapers, ice cream, lottery tickets.
00:04:28And one night, I saw a boxing match on TV and I dreamed that boxing would give me the opportunity to help my family.
00:04:35The next day, I went to the gym.
00:04:39But his dream wasn't realized overnight.
00:04:42Ramirez made his professional debut at 14 after dropping out of school to support his family.
00:04:4711 years and 93 fights later, he won the WBC lightweight title.
00:04:52Along the way, he fought the toughest of opponents.
00:04:54In 1980, he gave Alexis Arguello his first career knockdown, a rare event in Arguello's illustrious career.
00:05:02Ramirez fought the fight of his life, but the result was a controversial loss for Mexico's aspiring champion.
00:05:10I really feel I won this fight, especially because of the knockdown.
00:05:14But even though I lost officially, I know in my heart I won.
00:05:18And sometimes that is an honor.
00:05:19For me, it was a moral victory.
00:05:30I felt there was injustice in the decision, but I did not feel demoralized.
00:05:35A fighter knows when he has won or lost a fight.
00:05:38If I fight an opponent and I feel I don't deserve a victory because he had a better fight
00:05:43and they raised my hand at the end as the winner, that is when I feel demoralized.
00:05:49When Ramirez fought Boom Boom Mancini, he was booed by the hometown crowd in Youngstown and beaten convincingly.
00:05:55But the loss to Mancini took nothing away from his own determination to continue.
00:06:01Mancini won this fight and won it well.
00:06:03Things like this happen and you can't let it bother you and you can do anything about it.
00:06:08I knew I would go on.
00:06:10There is no choice.
00:06:11Mancini was the tougher fighter that night.
00:06:13I do not take anything away from him.
00:06:16I was recovering from a week-long bout with the flu and I was having problems with my injury in my left hand.
00:06:22But even though I lost, I was determined to go on.
00:06:25Three years and 18 fights later, Ramirez had a second chance against champion Edwin Rosario.
00:06:32Ramirez returned to Rosario's backyard to claim his title.
00:06:35But less than 10 minutes into the fight, the dream almost slipped away.
00:06:41The second fight with Rosario was a tough one.
00:06:44His style surprised me.
00:06:45He was beating me with both hands.
00:06:47In the second round, I was seriously hurt.
00:06:50But thanks to the condition I was in and my training, I was able to get out.
00:06:55Everything I worked for passed through my mind and I thought of my family.
00:06:58And then, thanks to God, I went on.
00:07:01This was the culmination of a lifetime of boxing.
00:07:05The new lightweight champion was now ready to defend his title for the first time in June of this year against Hector Camacho.
00:07:14But Camacho abruptly postponed that date.
00:07:17This ruffled the champion's feathers to say the least.
00:07:19In a break from his usual unassuming character, the lightweight champion responded like this.
00:07:25I trained strongly for this fight.
00:07:30And instead of meeting a macho camacho, I found a chicken like this one.
00:07:34So in place of a title defense, Ramirez handily beat Manny Hernandez in a tune-up for tonight's fight.
00:07:41In a style that is all Jose Luis Ramirez, he goes on, setting an example for those who may follow.
00:07:51He hopes that the children will respect him and he wants to set a good example so that the children will try to do as he does.
00:08:00Now you see with those little kids in the gymnasium, he'll take time out to talk to them and try to teach them.
00:08:07So consequently, I think that the other kids are going to try to imitate him or follow in his footsteps.
00:08:12And he hopes.
00:08:42And so coming up, the WBC Lightweight Championship of the World, the first defense for the champion,
00:09:09Jose Luis Ramirez, he gets a tiger, Hector Macho, a boy of boxing, Macho Camacho.
00:09:16Larry?
00:09:16Whenever they put a title on a fight, something cute like Vengeance in Vegas or Restoration in Reno,
00:09:23I tend to do what everybody else does, ignore it.
00:09:27But tonight, I can't.
00:09:29For tonight, for Hector Camacho, this is indeed a bullfighter's moment of truth.
00:09:34That's the title, moment of truth, as he tests himself against a brave bull of a champion.
00:09:41It's apt as well because Hector Camacho is a human light-up suit of lights,
00:09:46which is what they call the flashy costume of the bullfighter.
00:09:50Where do you see his act tonight?
00:09:52He's a combination of Rambo and somebody with a lot of flash and dash,
00:09:59somebody like Diana Ross, for example.
00:10:02I don't think I've seen such a bundle of energy and talent and sheer nerve since Muhammad Ali.
00:10:09I think if he had stuck a dead light bulb in his face, it would glow like a Christmas tree.
00:10:14He reminds me of a four-year-old who has just two speeds, sleep and go, non-stop.
00:10:21For all those reasons, I expect that tonight it magnifies that moment of truth.
00:10:27He has to prove he's electric in the ring as outside.
00:10:32How can you feel it?
00:11:02Hector Macchio Camacho.
00:11:10The only words that could describe his character are his own.
00:11:17I carry this machismo thing with me, you know, I'm not ashamed to show a body, you know, I mean, I got a healthy body, I'm 23 years old, well known, I mean, I got a lot of lady fans, and I figure, wow, you know, a lot of people compliment me about my body, about my looks, about my teeth, you know, about the way I am, I think I want to do something different, I want to blow their mind, you know, I want to show them what machismo is all about, you know.
00:11:45It's all about the streets, they taught him how to steal cars, dodge probation, and fight.
00:11:51They gave me a lot of street smarts, it made me rough, tough, you know, cocky the way I am.
00:11:58If one day things don't wind up the way I wanted, or expected, one day I'll survive because I started with nothing.
00:12:08First of all, it taught me how to fight, taught me how to survive.
00:12:15As crude as it may sound, Hector carried his win-at-all-costs attitude into the ring.
00:12:20Some may call him dirty, but the formula has bred nothing but success.
00:12:24And I used to fight in the street, okay, I used to pop, pop, pop, pop, hit the guy that hit him with my feet.
00:12:31We, we in a fight, we in war, you trying to hurt me.
00:12:35If I grab you by the neck and you let me do it, I'm going to keep doing it every night.
00:12:39I bet you you won't grab me in the head and do it.
00:12:42I bet you you won't get dirty with me because I won't let you.
00:12:44At 21, Hector had taken his streetwise attitude and turned it into a title, but his image of living in the fast lane soon caught up with him.
00:12:54Camacho termed his year-long exodus from boxing a result of managerial and promotional problems.
00:12:59After jet-setting around the country, he finally settled down to train outside Hollywood.
00:13:03You know, this hill reminds me of one time when I was in Central Park from 96th Street.
00:13:16Well, from 96th Street, looking towards 59th Street, right?
00:13:22I used to think about everything I wanted to accomplish, you know, as far as being a fighter and being the macho man that I am.
00:13:29Now it's funny, being on the way in Hollywood, looking from this hill down that way, and stop and think about everything I accomplished, you know?
00:13:40That's just life, you know?
00:13:42All I am is a humble kid.
00:13:44I don't look humble.
00:13:45Well, I'm humble.
00:13:46I respect, you know?
00:13:48But don't disrespect me because you're teasing me, you know?
00:13:50I'm like a pig dog.
00:13:51You're going to tease me, I'm going to bite you, and my jaw is going to lock on you, okay?
00:13:55His bite was never more venomous than when his estranged manager, Bill Giles, went public in USA Today, explaining Hector's layoff.
00:14:03Camacho is still bitter.
00:14:05When Billy knew he was out, he called USA Today, and he told me that the reason that me and the kid broke up was because he's hooked on drugs, because he's this, because he's that, and he'll never bounce back.
00:14:16And next thing you know, he just turned around and stabbed me, and kept stabbing me, and time for that shot me.
00:14:21And now, the Macho Man has bounced back.
00:14:24The allegations still linger, but Hector Camacho has been training under the discipline guidance of Jimmy Montoya.
00:14:30It all may sound very confusing, and he may not have the easiest character to understand, but that may...
00:14:51...that might be a sign for what we do.
00:14:55...
00:14:56...
00:14:57...
00:14:59...
00:15:00...
00:15:00...
00:15:01...
00:15:02...
00:15:02...
00:15:03...
00:15:03...
00:15:04...
00:15:07The Macho Man is here, and I'm putting order in my way,
00:15:36and anybody to get in front of me, get in line, because I'm the Macho Man.
00:15:46Hector Camacho, and he is, in fact, the genuine article.
00:15:49I'll tell you what, they broke the mold, Ray, when they invented Hector Macho Camacho.
00:15:53He is special for sure, guy.
00:15:54Well, he's a guy tonight that really does have something to prove.
00:15:57He does have a lot of flash and dash.
00:15:58He's a perfectly charming guy.
00:16:00He's a bright guy.
00:16:00And speaking of flash and dash, when you look at that outfit,
00:16:04I want to tell you, there's going to be no show at the Riviera tonight,
00:16:06because Hector's wearing the curtains.
00:16:11That is all glitz, high glitz.
00:16:14Well, he has possessed to wear that type of outfit.
00:16:16Very few fighters can wear that type of outfit and get into the ring safely.
00:16:21You know, one of the things he says is that he always has a title to defend,
00:16:24even when he's going for the title,
00:16:26because he puts himself out on the limb like this,
00:16:28and it makes him fight hard.
00:16:30He has a great character.
00:16:31There's no question about it.
00:16:32Perfectly charming guy.
00:16:33I'll tell you what, he looks like he mugged Prince.
00:16:38He's just singing away there.
00:16:40He was very loose in his locker room, as you saw prior to that story that we had on Hector Camacho.
00:16:46We took a shot of him in the locker room.
00:16:47You saw he was extremely loose, singing.
00:16:50Wait till this crowd gets a glint of him.
00:16:52I called him Rambo and Diana Ross.
00:16:56I think it should be Rambo and Liberace.
00:16:59A likely twosome.
00:17:00And so here comes Macho Camacho, making his way toward the ring,
00:17:07and his presence will be known.
00:17:12This little outfit cost him $800.
00:17:20It's just kind of a knockoff of a jumpsuit we saw him wear
00:17:23at the Boom Boom Mancini Livingstone Bramble fight,
00:17:26and here comes Macho Camacho, looking like the good witch of the West.
00:17:34There is the Macho Man.
00:17:37He's getting the crowd pumped up.
00:18:00Now if he's only dancing about an hour from now,
00:18:02that'll make the evening complete.
00:18:04He's very loose, and he looks in shape.
00:18:09I would call that a dramatic entrance.
00:18:1226-0.
00:18:13Incidentally, we should point out it is 26, not 27,
00:18:15as you might have read in other places.
00:18:17One fight that he had earlier this year was an exhibition,
00:18:20and not a fight that counts on the official record.
00:18:22So there he is, folks.
00:18:25Hector Macho Camacho.
00:18:28He makes a peacock seem like a preppy.
00:18:30And so there's the flash of trash,
00:18:38and now the businessman starting to make his way toward the ring,
00:18:42Jose Luis Ramirez.
00:18:44Not quite as flashy, but with an enviable record.
00:18:48And after all, he is the champion,
00:18:51and it is his title that Macho Camacho seeks to take tonight.
00:18:55Traditionally, the challenger, of course, the first in the ring.
00:19:03And Ramirez having a little bit of trouble cutting through the crowd to get here.
00:19:06His handlers have preceded him in.
00:19:08They might have forgotten him.
00:19:12And here he comes.
00:19:13And the chant is Macho, Macho, Macho.
00:19:29Even though the entrance is for the champion.
00:19:32They're telling Mexico, Medica.
00:19:38I beg your pardon.
00:19:39Camacho was leading the cheers,
00:19:40so I thought they were saying Macho.
00:19:42I don't know what part Camacho is trying for,
00:19:44but he gets it.
00:19:48And Ramirez, of course, a world of experience.
00:19:51Of course, he started fighting at age 14.
00:19:52He has 90 and 4.
00:19:5474 knockouts.
00:19:55He fought for the most part in his native Mexico.
00:19:58You know, he got about 4 bucks for his first fight,
00:20:01the equivalent of 4 bucks when he was 14 years old.
00:20:04But there's no truth to the rumor that his manager took two of them.
00:20:10So an awful lot of experience.
00:20:12He knows his way around the ring.
00:20:16And as Larry Merchant mentioned,
00:20:18unquestionably this will be Camacho's toughest test.
00:20:22Well, on paper, it figures to be that way.
00:20:25In the ring, we'll see.
00:20:27Very comparable so far as the tail of the tape is concerned.
00:20:30Ramirez, 3 years older, that really will not be a factor.
00:20:3326 as opposed to 23.
00:20:34And here is our computer toy punch stat,
00:20:36which shows you the cumulative impact of a fighter.
00:20:41These are the punches that Ramirez has thrown in three fights.
00:20:45He averages about 65 punches a round.
00:20:48We'll land something like 27 or 28.
00:20:51And here's Camacho on three of his better fights.
00:20:53He throws a few more punches and the champion and lands about the same.
00:21:01Let's take a look at the rules for this fight.
00:21:02They are, as always, in the state of Nevada, 10-point must system.
00:21:05The referee does not judge the fight.
00:21:07No standing hit count.
00:21:08You can be saved by the bell only in the last round.
00:21:11And a ring doctor can stop the fight.
00:21:14So he can be very much of a factor in this fight.
00:21:18One other factor that we should point out.
00:21:21The champion, Jose Luis Ramirez, went to the commission
00:21:24and complained about Hector Camacho's tactics in some previous fights
00:21:28where he will grab the man behind the ring, behind the neck rather,
00:21:30and pull him toward him.
00:21:32And the commission has said if he does go ahead and do that,
00:21:35the first time they will give him a warning,
00:21:37the second time they will take the round away,
00:21:38and the third time they'll disqualify him.
00:21:40So Camacho's already starting out, a strike behind, if you will.
00:21:43Right now, let's go to Chuck Hull for the ring announcements.
00:21:50Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention, please.
00:21:52Would you all please rise as I present a very talented and a very lovely lady
00:22:00who will now present the national anthem of the United States of America.
00:22:06Ladies and gentlemen, with great pride, I present the very talented Dionne Warwick.
00:22:13Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early lights
00:22:30What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
00:22:39Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
00:22:48O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
00:22:57And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
00:23:06Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
00:23:15Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:23:25O'er the land of the free
00:23:29And the home of the brave
00:23:37Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the superstar theater of the Riviera Hotel

00:26:11Maybe bad

00:26:15I'm not going to put up with any rough stop
00:26:18I've told you both of that, okay?
00:26:20Any questions here?
00:26:22Any questions?
00:26:23Any questions here?
00:26:25All right, let's get it on
00:26:26Get it on
00:26:26And Mills Lane said he's not going to put up with any rough stop
00:26:31Camacho is now all business
00:26:34And he's got a guy who has been notoriously, Larry, a rather slow starter
00:26:40The thing about Camacho that has to be remembered is that
00:26:43For all of his glitz and glitter
00:26:44He takes care of business in the ring
00:26:47Remember, Edwin Rosario knocked Ramirez down twice early
00:26:52Ramirez got back up and wound up winning that fight
00:26:56And with it, the championship
00:26:57I was impressed with Ramirez when he did away with Rosario
00:27:06Edwin Rosario, former champion
00:27:07That was a good left hand by Camacho
00:27:09He is very, very quick
00:27:12They say the fastest since the man on my right
00:27:15This, that's the key to this fight
00:27:17The fact that Camacho hand speed is incredible
00:27:19And I don't think that Ramirez ever experienced
00:27:22Fighting someone with that type of hand speed
00:27:24And type of movement
00:27:25Camacho can do it all
00:27:28He can box, he can punch
00:27:29And because Ramirez is such a slow starter
00:27:33The early rounds of Camachos, no question about it
00:27:38Someone said, even when Sugar Ray Leonard looked in the mirror
00:27:41He didn't see anybody with hand speed as fast as Macho Camacho
00:27:44I was so impressed with Camacho's hand speed
00:27:46I think what Ramirez has going for him
00:27:49Is his ability to take a punch
00:27:51Good combinations by Camacho
00:27:53Backs Ramirez into the ropes
00:27:54Camacho looking sharp early on here
00:27:59Not missing much
00:28:00For Ramirez, the later rounds are his rounds
00:28:06Because he's strong and he comes back
00:28:09And he's ring-wise
00:28:11When you've been in there as many times as he has
00:28:13He's all business in there
00:28:15He turned professional at the age of 14
00:28:17I started my amateur boxing career at the age of 14
00:28:20Which tells you this kid has a great deal of experience on his belt
00:28:23Ramirez content to see what's in front of him here in the first round
00:28:36Not throwing a lot of punches
00:28:39Just kind of measuring Camacho
00:28:40See what he's all about
00:28:41That's what Ramirez has to do with Camacho
00:28:51Is throw down a movement, work his body
00:28:53Yes
00:28:55Paying away
00:28:58What's up?
00:29:00Ramirez covered up very well then
00:29:01Most of those punches, landing on the arms of the glove
00:29:04Capri
00:29:06Matt
00:29:08Eleon
00:29:09What's up?
00:29:10tile
00:29:11===
00:29:12As
00:29:12core

00:29:16necess
00:29:16a frenetic first round here we will be going into Jose Luis Ramirez's corner
00:29:34after the first round and we will have a simultaneous interpretation by
00:29:38Tito Alba who will listen into the Spanish and give it to you in English
00:29:46a good round for Camacho if he keeps this up there will be a pot of gold at the end
00:29:54of those rainbow trunks remember I just went to the wrong corner
00:30:03easy easy nothing is happening yet you take it easy
00:30:11very quietly do it very nicely and slow he is only showing off is he had no
00:30:24strength he's only showing off you go easy
00:30:29you start the second round both corners very professional and you heard Ramirez's
00:30:38corner say he's just showing off he's not that strong Montoya in Camacho's corner said
00:30:44just box
00:30:58what Camacho wanted to do from the very first round was to box stick and move and he's doing
00:31:13just that and it's in his best interest to stay out of the punching reach of Ramirez Ramirez likes to get
00:31:22inside work the body another thing to point out here that Camacho is heavier than
00:31:28he's ever been at 134 pounds remember when he was champion it was at 130
00:31:32a lot of people saying that this weight will be a factor because Ramirez is a solid
00:31:37a solid fighter but I feel that Camacho he walks the street at 135 140 so I don't think the weight is going to be a factor at all
00:31:46but maybe then again in the later rounds
00:31:49a little good after cut by Camacho
00:31:52Camacho really showing no signs of a layoff he's very sharp
00:32:01Camacho has a gift and also those three fights he had this year helped out a great deal
00:32:08you notice that Camacho is really just landing those shots to the head of Ramirez
00:32:15but Ramirez the best thing he has going for him is that good chin
00:32:18good solid chin
00:32:20we said earlier this is a guy that's been around the track more than once and he is at
00:32:23his best in the later rounds and Camacho has not heard him yet
00:32:31what I like about Camacho he doesn't hit you with one particular punch it's with a
00:32:35series of punches
00:32:38two good right hands one in the body one upstairs but Ramirez is right in his face
00:32:42you can see the concentration on Ramirez face but he doesn't change expression
00:32:48a very serious competitor all he's doing now is just stalking Camacho trying to cut the ring off
00:32:59what Camacho does is all natural and he may have a few problems with Mills Lane
00:33:05he wasn't hooking him there though that was just Ramirez coming forward and Camacho stepping out of the way
00:33:10we have to see whether not Camacho can keep up this pace moving
00:33:27because Ramirez is not using any unnecessary energy
00:33:33further body shape
00:33:35another good round for Camacho
00:33:50right now the quicker city mouse is dominating the slower country mouse
00:33:56the slower country mouse
00:34:10tell it don't push it, don't push it, don't push it
00:34:16you can win this fight
00:34:19just keep going, you're gonna get better, we need better everything after it goes
00:34:22just relax, you can walk to the sides, you have to run all the time
00:34:25walk, when he comes in, jab, fake, but you can catch him up, he's running down a little bit
00:34:30you have to work him out with your left, wait for him when he's coming up to you
00:34:37hit him with your left, always with the left, and easy
00:34:41don't rush it, easy, with the left
00:34:46as you saw by that statistic, Ramirez is having a hard time
00:34:49landing any clean punches
00:34:51and that of course directly attributable to Macho Camacho's quickness
00:34:55well, they was, uh, Ramirez was giving instructions to, uh, just take it easy
00:35:00and wait for Camacho to come in
00:35:02I don't suggest he do that, I think he should take the fight to Camacho
00:35:06and make a brawl out of it
00:35:08Camacho's handspeed is too great for Ramirez to stand back
00:35:12Ramirez is finding it difficult to get inside with Camacho because you know it's Camacho
00:35:18saw four or five punches going in and jump out
00:35:21Bill's laying telling Camacho to keep the punches up
00:35:23crowd reacts with improved
00:35:25Camacho, Camacho's also giving angles left and right
00:35:29the perfect movement for, for a slugger like Ramirez
00:35:33we gotta keep him off balance, keep him wondering
00:35:35that was a good left hand and down goes Ramirez
00:35:39there was a left hand, a chopping left hand that started Ramirez on his way
00:35:44now watch how aggressive Camacho becomes now
00:35:48Camacho was a great finisher, now let's see if he feels Ramirez is hurt
00:35:52another right hand, a left hand, a chopping left hand that started Ramirez on his way
00:36:02now watch how aggressive Camacho becomes now
00:36:05Camacho was a great finisher, now let's see if he feels Ramirez is hurt
00:36:09another right hand, a left hand rather sends Ramirez into the ropes
00:36:17remember, Rosario knocked Ramirez down, Ramirez got up and was able to stop
00:36:22Rosario in the fourth round, remember still a minute and 20 seconds remaining
00:36:26in this round, so Ramirez if in fact he is hurt has a long way to go and there
00:36:30Mills Lane warns Camacho for holding, well every time Mills Lane give a warning
00:36:35it gives Ramirez an opportunity to recover from a knockdown
00:36:40remember they said one warning then the next time the round and the next time
00:36:43the fight and Camacho continues right on top of Ramirez
00:36:52Ramirez does see him on stable legs right now however
00:37:00bleeding from the nose however
00:37:09and also from the mouth, might have broken his nose
00:37:11Ramirez can't get the center, every time he reaches in Camacho hits him
00:37:15and once again Mills Lane, I believe he took a point away, we'll see at the end of the round
00:37:28Camacho obviously getting frustrated by that too
00:37:32Ramirez is so slow compared to Camacho, Camacho is able to hit four or five times to his one
00:37:37and blood flowing very freely from the nose of Jose Luis Ramirez
00:37:42you also see frustration in the eyes of Ramirez
00:37:52big round for Camacho
00:37:54well if he had to prove he was as electric in the ring as outside he's sure proving it right here
00:38:08he's fighting a sensational fight he's beating up the champion right now
00:38:14let's take a look at the knockdown
00:38:15there it is, the right hand blocked followed by a left
00:38:22Ramirez tumbles to the canvas, another angle
00:38:39right this looks like it answers the question of whether he's strong enough to hurt a good lightweight
00:38:43at 134 to 5 pounds he's he certainly seems to be in his element and he's proving that point
00:38:51well Harold Weston uh Madison Square Garden said about
00:38:54Macho Camacho after only his 10th fight as a matter of fact he said no one with two hands is going to
00:38:59beat Hector Camacho and so far the champion who has two hands is not and we're going to get the doctor
00:39:05up here to look at the nose of Ramirez and this one it's a pretty serious
00:39:13it's very very rare that a fight would be stopped for a bloody nose
00:39:23blood flowed right through the break between rounds
00:39:28so they have not been able to do anything about stopping it
00:39:30I like the movement of Camacho he's so fast
00:39:33and he's not giving Ramirez an opportunity to do anything not to load up Ramirez reaches in
00:39:40and Camacho is not there that was a good right hook followed by two right jabs
00:39:47and another combination Camacho looking very sharp
00:39:54and the reason he's able to catch Ramirez with that left hand he steps to the left
00:40:03a little flurry from Ramirez but no damage
00:40:33he's not cutting the ring off he's actually following Camacho so Camacho can pretty much do what he
00:40:54wants to do also the punches of Ramirez are actually being telegraphed and Camacho can see him coming
00:41:00and can counter
00:41:04and again the best thing that Ramirez can do is to work the body of Camacho slow down his movement
00:41:11because no way there's no way in the world he can match the handspeed of Camacho
00:41:16Camacho
00:41:26Camacho is showing good power in both hands
00:41:30that's what Ramirez has to do inside
00:41:32he has to make the Macho work every round and slow that pace down
00:41:48and that chant is about half Meiko and half Macho
00:42:01Ramirez has trouble fighting his corner every round Camacho is fighting not only a flashy
00:42:06dashi fight it's discipline he's doing exactly what he wants to do
00:42:13controlling virtually every second of the action
00:42:19Camacho is feeling a little tired now so you have to push him up a little bit more
00:42:25get more speed and keep hitting him with your left he is getting a lot tired
00:42:32he is losing his hair he is losing his air he cannot breathe because he's too tired now
00:42:38come to him with your left always with the left
00:42:41sure looks good
00:42:47here we go don't stay still don't let this guy stand still
00:42:52come on second shot let's go come on come on
00:43:02during Montoya Camacho's training said to keep moving not to stay stationary
00:43:08in fact I don't understand Ramirez's corner they say just throw the left just throw the left he
00:43:12needs more the left hand to beat Camacho he needs an extra hand to beat Camacho the way this fight has gone
00:43:18so far Camacho seems to have the champion somewhat confused Ramirez really hasn't landed anything that resembles a strong punch
00:43:28also Ramirez is not able to uh come back fast enough to count some of the punches thrown by Camacho
00:43:39we have to see whether or not Camacho can keep this up
00:43:47and if and something I know is also Barry Ramirez is not doing the left hand
00:43:52like his current instructor comes to
00:43:55Camacho's never right in front of him that's the reason
00:44:09Ramirez looking to get in one particular punch
00:44:14Camacho has not given him an opportunity
00:44:19and contrary to what Ramirez's corner said Camacho does not look tired to me
00:44:23one thing about a boxer good boxer excellent box he knows where he is at any time he knows the ring
00:44:39it's only about the second time that he's had him on the ropes two or three times in his fight that's
00:44:48on Camacho slipped away easily when he has Ramirez is able to give him a good shot to deliver
00:44:52well second shot there those are kind of type of punches that slows movement down and slow the mobility down of
00:44:59Camacho
00:45:06very effective day by Camacho
00:45:11Camacho on the ropes took a couple from Ramirez but no damage
00:45:15Camacho
00:45:24Camacho now is hitting with the inside of the glove
00:45:28his hand could be injured his left hand
00:45:30he knows there he didn't throw he had an opportunity to hit Ramirez and he didn't throw it
00:45:49well they say that Camacho has made a lot of mistakes outside the ring the last year and a
00:46:05half but when you're young and talented and ambitious sometimes you just outrun your mistakes
00:46:11take me home you know you're doing a good job and the thing of it is that close your eyes
00:46:17the thing of it is keep it close okay the thing of it is that you're gonna listen to me can you
00:46:21hear me hold your hands down okay you gotta you gotta box this guy straight to side nothing bad
00:46:31that's an awful lot of punches thrown in five rounds listen to me you box this guy don't be brave
00:46:36that's an awful linker yeah yeah I'm not sure retire now you can knock him out because he is tired and
00:46:46he's running a lot
00:46:54so far Camacho is thrown about 204 punches
00:46:57and the fighter who his handlers are saying is less tired than the other guy
00:47:06once again we hearken back to the Rosario final although that one was over in four rounds
00:47:11this has now gone on further than that but Ramirez is a late starter
00:47:17and Ray you mentioned between rounds when we were talking that perhaps
00:47:21Macho is a little bit tired well he's he's thrown so many punches but and he has been a little arm
00:47:27worried if anything but he he's in excellent shape so he should get a second round soon
00:47:34now all Camacho is throwing just power and of course Jimmy Montoya in his corner was saying
00:47:39just box this guy don't get careless
00:47:40interestingly enough the nose of Ramirez has not been bleeding quite as much in the last couple
00:47:52rounds as it did in the two or three prior Ramirez has yet to throw a combination
00:48:02and reason being Camacho is not giving him a chance
00:48:04so much of throws his punches and after that he moves away or he detaches this man up
00:48:28Ramirez is forcing the fight
00:48:29which is very good because he has to stop Camacho from moving so much
00:48:37which will allow him to get set and throw his own punches
00:48:40very very slowly almost imperceptibly the tenor of this fight is changing
00:48:47it's not to say that Camacho hasn't owned it so far but
00:48:51right at the moment Ramirez seems to be more in the fight and he takes two shots from Camacho just
00:48:55as I say that and he seems to be more in the fight than he has been beautiful combinations
00:48:59by Camacho very accurate punches sharp, crisp punches
00:49:18Camacho has really been laying some good shots solid shots on the nose Ramirez
00:49:23and the reason you can tell his nose is broken normally the results with two black eyes
00:49:29Camacho bouncing off the ropes with a good left hand after taking a fairly good shot from Ramirez
00:49:33and both eyes appear to be a little cocky so it could be a possible that his nose is broken
00:49:47you wonder what Ramirez is thinking now is my corner going to tell me again that this guy's getting tired
00:50:07what fight are they looking at
00:50:17okay compadre you are okay the only thing you have to do is to avoid his punches but you are okay and
00:50:23he is getting tired more tired every time so take it easy and don't rush it
00:50:34no comment that was about as predictable as the temperature here in las vegas topping 100
00:50:41barry the over under here on the temperature is 102 i understand that was just over for a push
00:50:56so we come to the seventh round
00:51:08four punch combination by camacho
00:51:12and he is checking the hand right, he is going to get away...
00:51:22Ramirez uses jab to offset the jab of camacho
00:51:23ramirez could use his jab to offset the jab of camacho
00:51:25Ramirez could use his jab to offset the jab of camacho
00:51:27alasOR he said beside walking he is trying to throw body shots and hooks
00:51:30his jab would get him in closer to be able to throw those shot to the body
00:51:32his jab would get him closer to be able to throw those shots to the body
00:51:35him in Ookos
00:51:39Camacho staying up-tempo here, very busy, just has not given Ramirez a chance because
00:51:49he's always moving and he's always giving Ramirez a different look, Ray.
00:51:52It's the constant movement, it's the angles that he's able to get, Camacho.
00:51:56Camacho's hand speed is really just mesmerizing Ramirez.
00:52:02Ramirez can't get set though, he's tried time and time again and Camacho's like a magician.
00:52:08He's always moving, but he never is completely predictable.
00:52:13He goes from left to right for the most part, but then he'll change up and go the other way.
00:52:17And sometimes he'll come straight ahead to punch.
00:52:20Alright, let's get out of the way, let's clean, here we go.
00:52:28Camacho now is starting to come under with his punches and raise the chin of Ramirez.
00:52:38Ramirez throws his jab and he drops it.
00:52:42And that's why Camacho is able to counter with his jab, with his left hand rather.
00:52:47And a fight such as this, Ray, the wear and tear of those punches thrown by Camacho normally would do a fighter in.
00:53:05Even though a lot of them are going on the arms of Ramirez, just the number of punches that are thrown wear you down.
00:53:12It's like Rocky Marciano, he used to bang his opponent on the arms a great deal.
00:53:15And eventually his arms would come down and then he could score.
00:53:20Beautiful combination. I'm impressed with the way Camacho's throwing his punches.
00:53:25He's controlling the fight.
00:53:36Camacho just fighting what is so far a brilliantly executed fight.
00:53:55He got five punches and he got out of there.
00:53:58Very impressive.
00:54:02Well, speaking of impressive, we will have what promises to be a very impressive night of boxing.
00:54:08Coming your way on Saturday, September 21st at 9 o'clock Eastern.
00:54:11A world championship amongst the heavyweights and it should be a great one.
00:54:14Larry Holmes against the undefeated light heavyweight champion Michael Spinks.
00:54:1849-0, remember, is Marciano's record and that is what Larry Holmes will be shooting for against Michael Spinks
00:54:24who hopes to be the first light heavyweight to ever jump up to the heavyweight championship.
00:54:30Keep this guy off balance, don't let him settle down.
00:54:32That's what you've been doing all the way through, okay?
00:54:34We got the fight, we got to keep it around, huh?
00:54:36Don't take no chance anymore.
00:54:39When he lunges, pick him up, you know.
00:54:41That jab, you got to hit him a lot with that jab so he can keep his nose bleeding so he can breathe.
00:54:45Alright?
00:54:48If you're wondering what Camacho can do for an encore sartorially, he's already supposed to become a playgirl centerfold.
00:54:59Yes, in the nude.
00:55:01In the nude.
00:55:03My wife will kill me.
00:55:12So this is the eighth round and it has been all Hector, Macho, Camacho, the challenger.
00:55:16Camacho is told not to give Ramirez a chance and he's not giving Ramirez a chance at all.
00:55:26Constant movement and the quick hand has made this fight quite difficult for Ramirez.
00:55:36We saw that graphic in another good right hand by Camacho saying that Camacho has not been knocked down in any fight pro or amateur and once more, Mills Lane warns Hector Camacho for holding around the neck.
00:55:54Which is fair in love but not in war.
00:55:59The right eye of Ramirez is starting to swallow a little bit.
00:56:02The right hand was caught on the gloves for the most part.
00:56:04Left hand, I beg your pardon.
00:56:05The right hand was caught on the gloves for the most part.
00:56:06Left hand, I beg your pardon.
00:56:07Camacho has thrown every punch in the book.
00:56:08And he's been effective with just about every one too.
00:56:09And Ramirez, I mean, he's quite durable.
00:56:10Camacho has thrown every punch in the book.
00:56:11And he's been effective with just about every one too.
00:56:12And Ramirez, I mean, he's quite durable.
00:56:13Look at the way he's missing.
00:56:38Look at the way he's missing.
00:56:40Good example of that, of the speed of Camacho.
00:56:43Not only his hand speed, but his foot speed.
00:56:44He was gone by the time Ramirez threw that punch.
00:56:50Camacho changed directions and came with the left hand.
00:56:54Very few fighters can change it.
00:56:56Excellent movement.
00:56:59Ramirez throws his punches on a wide arc,
00:57:02and almost inevitably, uppercut did get in.
00:57:05But almost inevitably, Camacho is outside the punch.
00:57:11As Ramirez reaches in to land a punch,
00:57:14Camacho has an opportunity to counter his punch.
00:57:21Get him up, Ramirez. Come on, get him up.
00:57:23That was Lane telling Ramirez to keep the punches up.
00:57:35Look at the jab of Camacho.
00:57:40Very effective.
00:57:41Very accurate.
00:57:48I think everyone's waiting for Ramirez to land a big punch.
00:57:52And Camacho, if anything, is even more effective now than he was earlier.
00:57:55Impressive, in a word.
00:58:01Whatever Ramirez's corner tells him,
00:58:04it's apparent now that the only way he can win this fight
00:58:06is by a knockout.
00:58:10And you've got to hit the other guy before you can knock him out,
00:58:13and he hasn't done much of that.
00:58:14When he comes to you, you have to fight him back really hard.
00:58:20You can do it.
00:58:22Hit him and hit him with the left.
00:58:24And you have to hit him.
00:58:25Avoid his punches.
00:58:27And let him have it.
00:58:29Let him have it because he's going to have it.
00:58:30You can do it.
00:58:31Don't mess it up.
00:58:38You're doing five in the same plan.
00:58:40When you set it on, throw three, four, four punches,
00:58:43don't pull back.
00:58:43Go to the side, all right?
00:58:45Remember, you always go to the right.
00:58:49You're doing good.
00:58:49You're doing great.
00:58:51No, no, no, nothing.
00:58:58Interesting number that Hector Macho Camacho
00:59:01has never knocked out an opponent
00:59:03after the eighth round.
00:59:04And here we are in the ninth.
00:59:16Another good right hand by Macho Camacho.
00:59:19And they're punching in right on that nose of Ramirez.
00:59:23I would say at this point,
00:59:25although, again, it's hard to look at the judging in a fight
00:59:28and really be knowledgeable.
00:59:29Camacho right on top of Ramirez again.
00:59:31I would say that Camacho's pitching a shutout here.
00:59:34I would agree, though.
00:59:36The Camacho's throwing so many punches.
00:59:39And most of them have been unanswered by Ramirez.
00:59:43He's not giving up, though.
00:59:45I mean, it's quite frustrating.
00:59:48We'll fight not to do it and land a punch.
00:59:52Come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:59:54Camilla's lying, telling him to keep him up.
00:59:59And Ramirez, three jabs at the right hand.
01:00:01And that was the key.
01:00:02That's the key for Ramirez,
01:00:04is to throw his own jab to offset Camacho's jab.
01:00:07First time he's done it tonight.
01:00:10Jimmy Montoya in Camacho's corner was saying
01:00:12he always goes to his right,
01:00:13which, for the most part, he does.
01:00:14There are many more Machos now than there are Macos.
01:00:27And there are many more Machos now than there are Macos.
01:00:43Ramirez picked the pace up a little bit,
01:00:45but he's not throwing any punches.
01:00:46He's actually making Camacho work.
01:00:50You see, once again, the jab.
01:00:53And his jab is effective
01:00:54because it's a good stiff jab.
01:00:57It knocks Camacho back.
01:01:12I think I was more holding on the hands, actually,
01:01:15than on the back of the head.
01:01:16I don't believe he really hooked him.
01:01:18I think what Mills Lane was saying
01:01:19was that he was grabbing his hand.
01:01:22But he still gave the warning.
01:01:41Camacho very quick to go down
01:01:43and then bring his punches up, right?
01:01:44He's so quick, Barry.
01:01:46He's able to deliver all types of punches.
01:01:50Uppercuts, left-hitch, right-hands.
01:01:51Water.
01:01:57Water.
01:01:58Water.
01:01:58You are okay.
01:02:03You are okay.
01:02:04Just keep waiting until he comes to you,
01:02:19and then he is walking too much already.
01:02:24He is actually running.
01:02:25But don't let him surprise you.
01:02:27He is running around you to surprise you and hit you hard,
01:02:32but don't let him do it.
01:02:34Something else.
01:02:35When he jumps, you also job.
01:02:37Yes, but the other kid is too much.
01:02:38When he jumps, jumps again.
01:02:41Right?
01:02:41I think that I have to be with you, right?
01:02:43You guys, man.
01:02:43Use your brains, okay?
01:02:44That's all I want you to do.
01:02:45Use your brains.
01:02:46You and I are going to work good together.
01:02:48Seriously.
01:02:48This is a beginning.
01:02:49This is a beginning.
01:02:49Lightweight division is probably the most talent-laden division in boxing,
01:02:58so there are a lot of big fights coming up
01:03:00when Hector Camacho becomes the champion in a few minutes.
01:03:07There doesn't seem to be anything that's going to change that course.
01:03:12Blood flowing again very freely from the nose.
01:03:15They was telling Ramirez if a Camacho jumped, he jumped.
01:03:18I don't think it's going to work.
01:03:20Camacho was actually, while we were watching and listening to Ramirez,
01:03:24Camacho was laughing in his corner.
01:03:28I think the best thing Ramirez can do is to use his own jab.
01:03:40There appeared to be a sign of desperation in Ramirez.
01:03:44He's yet to put together a combination against Camacho.
01:03:46I think it's about half desperation and half frustration.
01:03:49Camacho just isn't there.
01:03:55Hold, hold, hold, hold.
01:03:57That's the head.
01:03:58That's the head.
01:03:59Come on, come on, come on.
01:04:00No sign telling both fighters, watch the head.
01:04:02Ramirez charged at Camacho that time just as Camacho was stepping forward.
01:04:05A punch for Ramirez to throw is his own left hand, but lead off because Camacho moves to his right.
01:04:14That would be a good punch to throw now.
01:04:15Shark right hand again on the side of the head.
01:04:25Shark right hand again on the side of the head.
01:04:25Wild left by Ramirez.
01:04:34And it is telegraphed too, Ben.
01:04:38And the fighter with Camacho's talent can see it coming a mile away.
01:04:41The way I see it, Ramirez's only hope is that he's able to hurt Camacho or Camacho runs out of gaze.
01:04:53There is a jab that came over with Ramirez.
01:04:59This crowd is getting upset.
01:05:00In fact, they're booing him because I guess they expected more action from the champion.
01:05:06Well, I think the challenger is fighting a perfect fight.
01:05:09And if they are, in fact, booing Camacho, which I'm not sure they are,
01:05:13they are 100% wrong.
01:05:16Camacho is definitely a technician.
01:05:32Very artistic here.
01:05:34The expression of Camacho's face is, I'm sure he's saying, what's keeping this guy up?
01:05:52Because he's thrown over, he's thrown about a thousand punches so far.
01:05:55Well, he said when he didn't knock out Roque Montoya in his last fight, he went 12 rounds.
01:06:01Maybe they're booing because they're a little bored.
01:06:05Fucking me off, look.
01:06:06Everybody put a little water on his head and everything else.
01:06:08They're treating Camacho, I think, like a champion.
01:06:11They're expecting something extra special from him.
01:06:15He has given an extra special performance.
01:06:19Now they want another star added to that performance.
01:06:22I want to be the smartest man in the world.
01:06:24We got to fight one.
01:06:25We got to do a moving stick.
01:06:27You don't have to prove nothing to nobody.
01:06:28You already proved it.
01:06:30It's the greatest thing, baby.
01:06:31Just stay that way.
01:06:32Two more rounds.
01:06:33You got six minutes of your life, baby.
01:06:34You hear what his trainer is saying.
01:06:37You don't have anything to prove to anyone.
01:06:44You got to knock the son of a bitch off this round, Jose.
01:06:49I know.
01:06:50That was a pretty clear advice.
01:06:59Fortunately, Jose doesn't speak English, so he has no idea what was said.
01:07:02Also, I think that might have been Camacho Camacho's son, who came into the ring, actually walked up to the corner and said, you can knock him out now.
01:07:14And that's the only time, I've never seen it happen, except in movies.
01:07:22In fact, Jimmy Montoya, Camacho's trainer, is just upon him boxing.
01:07:28Nothing to prove.
01:07:29Just two more rounds.
01:07:29Just two more rounds.
01:07:30I'm not getting back.
01:07:30I'm waiting.
01:07:31I'm waiting.
01:07:31I'm waiting.
01:07:32I'm waiting.
01:07:32I'm waiting.
01:07:32I'm waiting.
01:07:32I'm waiting.
01:07:33Go, go, go.
01:07:33Let me go.
01:07:38I started to say at the end of the last round that when Camacho did knock out Roque Montoya in his last fight, he said,
01:07:44I needed the work, I needed the 12 rounds.
01:07:46I'm not sorry I didn't knock him out.
01:07:48There's no way you could look at this fight tonight, whether Camacho knocks out Ramirez or not, and say he wasn't brilliant.
01:07:53He's fought a marvelous fight.
01:08:00Ramirez at this point, going full well, he needs a knockout to win.
01:08:04He's willing to take any kind of, any type of punch.
01:08:06And he's going, he's going for broke.
01:08:14All right, get him up from there.
01:08:20The crowd again reacts by Bowie.
01:08:31Camacho also has thrown Ramirez off by grabbing him.
01:08:37Ramirez walked right into that right-handed Camacho.
01:08:44Camacho has not let Ramirez throw any punches.
01:08:52The crowd is good, but Camacho is doing the right thing.
01:08:54Absolutely the right thing.
01:08:56Because he has been a little winded.
01:08:57He's been throwing so many punches from round one on.
01:09:01Nils Lane took a shot that time from Ramirez.
01:09:03Might have been the best shot of the fight.
01:09:09That will not be a knockout.
01:09:10Come here.
01:09:17Okay, it's back.
01:09:18Come here, come here, come here, come here.
01:09:24Nils Lane the perfect referee for this fight.
01:09:27No nonsense.
01:09:27Take charge.
01:09:28Fighters respect him.
01:09:33Camacho's keeping Ramirez off balance.
01:09:35Tying him up.
01:09:38Moving from side to side.
01:09:39He's just doing everything right.
01:09:41He can't say enough good things about the fight that Camacho is fighting here.
01:09:44Oh
01:09:46Let's take a look at that.
01:10:16Ramirez did seem to get a little closer to Camacho in that round than he has before.
01:10:21It might have landed a few punches.
01:10:23And as Camacho tried to tie him up, they both lost their balance.
01:10:27No harm done, no foul.
01:10:35Now Ramirez is trying to return the favor by tripping Camacho.
01:10:41The first time he's shown any frustration in his fight.
01:10:43His face is such a mass of indifference almost to what's going on here.
01:10:53But obviously something is beating inside him.
01:10:56His championship is slipping away.
01:10:59And three minutes before it does slip away.
01:11:07Not much Jimmy Montoya could say to Hector Camacho in this quarter.
01:11:11Just do what you've been doing.
01:11:12When you're talking about movement and hand speed and power, it's going to cut.
01:11:20Camacho will be rejuvenated because he can taste the victory.
01:11:24And that's actual motivation.
01:11:26This is all Camacho has to do, Barry.
01:11:42Just box him.
01:11:45Just keep your jab out.
01:11:47Score his points.
01:11:48And win the title.
01:11:49And that's exactly what he's doing.
01:12:10There's no question as to what kind of condition Hector Camacho came into this fight.
01:12:14I think he knew exactly what he was up against.
01:12:20And he prepared himself quite well.
01:12:22Got right hand by Camacho.
01:12:27I really believe he might have won every round here.
01:12:31Oh, without a doubt, Barry.
01:12:32I mean, he's thrown so many punches each round.
01:12:35He's stayed in control.
01:12:37Remember, Ramirez came in here with 94 fights.
01:12:49A lot of experience.
01:12:51Hector Camacho with 26 fights.
01:12:52Although, as somebody said, 26 fights professionally.
01:12:56126 if you count amateur and professional.
01:12:59And 3,126 if you count the streets.
01:13:021,126 if you count enough!
01:13:161,126 if you count forandalic одésus!
01:13:241,126 if you count!
01:13:261,126 if you count!
01:13:281,126 if you count!
01:13:30Macho is still moving still being evasive Ramirez has now fought 36 minutes of boxing
01:13:52and has never figured his man out welcome Macho is a new champ and he earned it it's
01:13:59over and Macho will have won his second title perhaps the most amazing thing about this fight is that his
01:14:07trunks didn't rust
01:14:08the thing about those trunks is the trunks only cost $25 but the extension cord was $5,000
01:14:22I really thought the trunks would be a little heavy but Camacho was in shape he moved
01:14:27just a magnificent performance really brilliant performance by Camacho there's there's absolutely
01:14:34nothing that you could look back on and say well maybe if Macho did this or Macho did that
01:14:39it was really a tremendous performance by him let's take a look at our punch stat statistics
01:14:45and as you can see Camacho threw 805 punches that is a lot of punches a great deal of punches
01:14:52and actually I would have thought that 42 and a half percent would have been a little
01:14:57bit higher I would have thought he was a little bit more effective than that but I thought
01:15:00Camacho just did everything right and it wasn't that Ramirez did not fight a good fight assistant
01:15:06Camacho completely took the fight away from him well Camacho did everything right Barry like
01:15:10to say it and the fact that he his movement his hand speed his foot speed let's go up to Chuck
01:15:17Hall now and we will get the official decision Chuck ladies and gentlemen here is the decision of the
01:15:24judges judge Harry Gibbs scores 118 111 judge Newton Campos scores 119 112 and judge Mike Jacobs scores 119 109
01:15:40for the winner by unanimous decision and new WBC
01:15:45and a well-deserved victory I just can't say enough superlatives to describe Camacho's victory tonight Ray it wasn't incidentally unanimous in a sense that he did not win every round on any of the judges cards but a very very impressive victory nonetheless
01:16:09well he was magnificent as far as his movement his hand speed everything and you got to give Ramirez a great deal of credit because he tried to hang in there but Camacho was just too much for him
01:16:16well it's a bright light on the boxing scene I'll tell you that Macho Camacho very charming guy and a tremendous victory for him today he just never gave it away let's go up now to Larry Merchant who is with the new champion Hector Macho Camacho Larry
01:16:32the new champion Hector Macho Camacho
01:16:39all right Hector you've dominated him right from the first row did you know that you were just too fast from him as soon as the fight started yes I I said throughout the whole press ease you know the bill up through the fight I told him I was the better fighter and I'm a hub
01:16:59punch and I proved it he's a strong fighter he proved it it was a great fight were you concerned about your punching ability against a strong lightweight that you never I thought I thought I would knock him out in the early rounds but like I said he brings excellent condition and he's determined why didn't you go after him to try and knock him out when you knocked him down early in the third round I said why get careless if I've been training for two months here's the here's the knockdown describe it to us as you see it
01:17:06well like I told Jimmy the one-two is gonna get them all the time but uh I wasn't gonna get all excited and play myself cheap I said no I'll generate a moored
01:17:32But I wasn't going to get overexcited and play myself cheap.
01:17:36I said, I'll knock him out early if it happens.
01:17:37If not, if it's necessary, I'll go 12 rounds, and I did.
01:17:40Did you go to school, so to speak, on what happened to Rosario
01:17:43when he knocked him down and then got knocked out himself?
01:17:45No, because I knocked down a lot of fighters that still took my time.
01:17:49I'm just getting seasons through every fight,
01:17:51and I'm pound for pound.
01:17:53I'm the best fighter, pound for pound, in the world.
01:17:56Bring him on. Bring him on.
01:17:58Mancini, I don't respect your opinion.
01:18:00Come on, baby. I'm going to knock you out.
01:18:03Well, who are some of the fighters you're going to fight?
01:18:05You can get some, baby. You can get some, too.
01:18:07Brian Bull, Jimmy Paul, Larry Holmes, all your niggas.
01:18:10Come on with it, baby.
01:18:12Yeah, buddy.
01:18:13Yeah, buddy.
01:18:16Macho time.
01:18:19Macho time.
01:18:21Let's hear from you, Larry.
01:18:22What about Aaron Pryor?
01:18:23Aaron Pryor? Come on with it, baby.
01:18:25I got faker than you. You bounce back. I know you.
01:18:28Come on, baby. Come on with it.
01:18:29It's macho time.
01:18:35Okay, let's go back to Barry Ray.
01:18:37It is macho time.
01:18:38Well, an animated macho camacho.
01:18:40He wants everybody.
01:18:41He wants everybody, and it's unbelievable.
01:18:44He still has so much energy left.
01:18:46He really does.
01:18:46As a matter of fact, he was talking about Bumu Mancini,
01:18:48and Mancini had said about him one time.
01:18:49He said you could ignore him.
01:18:50You could answer him back.
01:18:51You could trade insults with him.
01:18:53You could demand a fight with him,
01:18:54but you're never going to close his mouth.
01:18:55Even if you knock him out, you're not going to close his mouth,
01:18:58and that's exactly what we saw tonight.
01:19:00But again, you can't take anything away from the victory
01:19:03that Macho Camacho scored today.
01:19:04You know, he may be in the fast lane and all that kind of stuff,
01:19:07but in the ring, he's really a craftsman.
01:19:09The one thing about like Muhammad Ali,
01:19:10you can talk, but you have to back your words up.
01:19:12Camacho can back his words up.
01:19:13It's going to be a really interesting light,
01:19:15as we mentioned, on the boxing scene right now.
01:19:17Let's get some final words then right now from Larry Merchant.
01:19:20Larry?
01:19:21You've heard of child-proofing a house.
01:19:23I think you've got to child-proof the world for Hector Camacho.
01:19:27One of the things I'm thinking about right now is that about a week ago,
01:19:30I was driving along the waterfront in New York City
01:19:34and spotted a little wildflower growing in a decaying old wharf of all places,
01:19:39and I thought of Hector Camacho.
01:19:41How this flower somehow flowered out of the ghetto
01:19:45and came here with all this energy and all this talent
01:19:48and against all odds, harnessed it,
01:19:52and here he is already at the age of 23,
01:19:55a two-time world champion.
01:19:58He's given a shot in the arm to boxing and the head and every place else,
01:20:03and we're going to see a lot more of him for the rest of this decade.
01:20:07Back to ringside.
01:20:09Well, Ray, let me ask you the obvious.
01:20:10Is he the new Ray Leonard?
01:20:12Is he a guy who can really breathe life into this sport again?
01:20:15Well, there's another Ray Leonard.
01:20:16That's my son.
01:20:17I'm looking forward to his next outfit.
01:20:19That's true.
01:20:20If not his fight, certainly his outfit.
01:20:22You don't want your son in here anyway, I don't think, do you?
01:20:23No, not really.
01:20:24But Hector Macho Camacho, of course, in the ring,
01:20:26you can say what you will about the guy,
01:20:28but the fact is that in the ring, he's an artist.
01:20:30He's Picasso once he gets in that 20-foot square,
01:20:33and there's no criticizing of anything he does in there.
01:20:35He's a businessman in there.
01:20:36Well, he's the best, and he proved that tonight.
01:20:39Excellent fight.
01:20:39He fought a tough guy.
01:20:40As we mentioned, this is not any hamburger that came in here.
01:20:42It's a guy with 94 fights.
01:20:44The only fights that he's lost were to champions.
01:20:46He lost to Arguello,
01:20:47and he said he just didn't have it in the Arguello fight,
01:20:49even though he thought that he might have won the fight.
01:20:51Against Mancini, he just said he stiffened up for some reason,
01:20:54and so he lost to Mancini.
01:20:55He lost to Ruben Oliveros.
01:20:56He has only lost to the very best,
01:20:58and tonight he might have lost to the best of the best.
01:21:00Ramirez can hold his chin up because he lost to a great fighter.
01:21:04He had to Camacho.
01:21:04Camacho did everything right,
01:21:06and he proved that he was qualified to be world champion.
01:21:09Who would you like to see him fight next?
01:21:11What would be a logical next fight for him?
01:21:13Aaron Pryor.
01:21:14I think that has the potential to be a great fight.
01:21:16But Aaron Pryor now, of course, he's been rather invisible.
01:21:18He hasn't been around too much,
01:21:19and there's some question as to what kind of condition he is in.
01:21:22Is he a bona fide contender right now?
01:21:23Well, Pryor has had a lot of problems, domestic and everything else,
01:21:26but I think that if he should regroup and come back,
01:21:29he could still be a dynamite fighter like he once was.
01:21:32Once again, the spotlight is shining on the lower divisions,
01:21:36the lightweight division, the welterweight division to a certain extent,
01:21:39and a little bit on the middleweight division, of course,
01:21:41with Marvin Hagler there,
01:21:42but it's not the heavyweights, once again.
01:21:44It's the lighter divisions.
01:21:45When guys come in the ring with outfits like Camacho,
01:21:48it has a shine,
01:21:49and fighters like Hagler makes it worthwhile also.
01:21:53Let's take one more look at the only knockdown in the fight.
01:21:55It was started with a very good left hand.
01:21:57Well, you can see the overhand left that Camacho landed,
01:22:00and he jumped right back on Ramirez
01:22:01and never gave him an opportunity to come back.
01:22:04We'll take one more look at it from another angle,
01:22:06and we'll see a powerful left hand.
01:22:08He waited just long enough, and boom, there it is.
01:22:11Well, I think it was a natural punch, instinctively punch,
01:22:13because he kind of had his head down, Camacho,
01:22:16but the fact that it landed and it hurt Ramirez very bad.
01:22:19Ramirez had said that he wanted to keep Camacho in the middle of the ring,
01:22:22and he did that,
01:22:23but what Camacho always did,
01:22:24he was always outside his outside foot,
01:22:27so Ramirez could never get any of those punches
01:22:29that come from the outside in.
01:22:30Camacho never gave Ramirez an opportunity to get set.
01:22:33Ramirez has to get in,
01:22:34plus Ramirez punches a telegram barrier,
01:22:36so that's a big problem,
01:22:37especially because of a fight like Camacho
01:22:38with his hand and foot speed.
01:22:40Well, there was no question about it tonight.
01:22:41The challenger was much the best,
01:22:43and the challenger now is the new champion,
01:22:45Hector Macho.
01:22:46Come on, boy.
01:22:46And saying so.
