00:00Daryl Ryder, as always brought to you by Chibet Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:07Our Browns beat reporter who's also, over the span of the year, double duty.
00:13He's been covering the Cavs.
00:14I know you've been a little under the weather, Daryl, but I know you were locked in.
00:18And we'll get to the Browns in just a second as rookie minicamp gets underway.
00:22They're down 2-0.
00:24Is it as simple as James Harden is awful?
00:26Or do you have bigger issues with our whining goal right now?
00:30Well, two of the five stars on this team don't play defense.
00:34That's James Harden and Donovan Mitchell.
00:37That's a problem.
00:39Is that bad? Is that a red flag?
00:40That's not great. Not in the playoffs.
00:43And so when you have that, when you're not making open looks either,
00:50that's a pretty deadly combination.
00:53So the Cavs are in tough shape.
00:56I don't know that a change of venue is all of a sudden going to change things
01:00for this basketball team.
01:02You know, for all the belly aching they do about the narrative that surrounds them,
01:06I don't know, maybe try and do something about said narrative?
01:10Come on, Andy. Give him some positivity. Let's go.
01:12No, Daryl, first of all, I know you're under the weather
01:14and I know you're a little bit nauseous.
01:15Is it an actual sickness or were you just watching the Cavs?
01:17He said violently ill.
01:19I talked to him on the phone and we were talking about the show the next day
01:22and then Daryl, a half hour later, violently ill.
01:25No, I was worried for you. We sent our prayers from the Lima family, Daryl.
01:28Well, they didn't work. How about that?
01:31I started a GoFundMe.
01:32So thanks for nothing, Lima.
01:35Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
01:36Come on, Andy. Positivity. Andy says we can still win the series.
01:39No. Well, they have a 7% chance.
01:40You think they're winning four the next five?
01:42No. And Lima makes stuff up.
01:44You know that.
01:45You said they had a chance.
01:46Now I get the whole Slippery Wizard thing.
01:48No. Of course they have a chance.
01:50Are they dead?
01:50No.
01:51Can they win two games at home?
01:53Yes.
01:53The problem I'm having, Daryl, is they haven't been ready either game right out of the gate.
01:58No, they haven't.
01:58It's ill-prepared.
01:59Is that on the coaches?
02:00Is that on the players?
02:01Is that on just nerves?
02:04I don't know.
02:05You tell me.
02:06I'm watching this professional basketball team look horrendous in the first quarter of both of these games.
02:12And last night, it cost them in the end that they had to do all the work to come back
02:16in this.
02:16They played a really good third quarter, but you spend all that energy trying to come back.
02:21We all know what happens in the NBA.
02:23Yeah.
02:24I mean, I think at some point the players have to take accountability.
02:28It's easy to pin this all on Kenny Atkinson.
02:30And by the way, if they lose this series, he's probably getting fired.
02:34And who knows what happens to the rest of this basketball team.
02:36It's too bad because I wanted him to get the next job if he's not going to be here.
02:39But now Mike Brown's up 2-0 in that series.
02:41I know.
02:43Former Cavs coach is doing very well in the postseason right now.
02:46Oh, man.
02:46Come on.
02:47They're doing a lot better than current Cavs coaches.
02:48I'll say that.
02:49You're twisting the knife.
02:49You're twisting the knife further and further.
02:51It's not going to make any Cavs fans feel any better, Daryl.
02:54Listen, you know what?
02:56I'd love to sit here and be Mr. Positive and make Cavs fans feel better.
03:00But I have no evidence to support my argument.
03:04I saw a stat where James Harden gave up like 7-for-7 on defense in the fourth quarter last
03:11night.
03:14He had, yet again, another playoff game in which he had more turnovers than field goals made.
03:21Look, I have to mea culpa here.
03:23I was dead wrong.
03:24I was so excited about the James Harden trade.
03:27I thought that that would be a move that could get them over the top.
03:33And then I guess I have to realize that maybe a guy who has had very little success in the
03:38playoffs maybe is not the guy to fix a team who is struggling to have success in the playoffs.
03:43So that's on me.
03:44I was very positive earlier this year.
03:47I'm not very positive right now.
03:48There's nothing to be positive about with this basketball team.
03:51Evan Mobley looks like a shadow of himself.
03:55I don't know if Kenny's got him playing out of position or whatever.
04:00I know every time I see him shoot a three-pointer, I want to throw something at the television.
04:03I get that this is the modern NBA.
04:06I just hate my guys that are almost seven feet tall shooting three-pointers.
04:10That's just me.
04:11I like the seven-foot guys close to the basket.
04:14Again, that's just me.
04:16I'm a little old school when it comes to my basketball.
04:18But Donovan Mitchell, I don't know if he's hurt.
04:24He hasn't looked the same since Game 3 against Toronto.
04:29And I don't want to speculate on anything, but something's off with Donovan right now as well.
04:35He just doesn't look like the same player.
04:37And if I'm Dan Gilbert, who's going to spend $400 million on this team this year,
04:43and they're looking at another second-round exit,
04:47the peak for this iteration of Kobe Altman's post-LeBron 2.0 rebuild is five playoff wins,
04:54and that's about it.
04:56That's a problem.
04:57And you're talking about Donovan Mitchell getting a potential salary escalation this offseason
05:04with a contract extension, James Harden, opting out of his player option to get a bigger payday.
05:12I don't know.
05:13What have you seen from either one of those guys that warrants north of $60 million a year
05:18salary for either one of them?
05:19Well, it would be $70 million.
05:20No, it would be $70 million for Donovan Mitchell.
05:23That's even worse.
05:25That's kind of the world you're living in.
05:27And so when you make that trade to take on James Harden at $37,000,
05:32and presumably it was to sign him to a two-year deal because he has a player option,
05:37I think, next year for $45 million.
05:39The whole point was you were doing it because Donovan signed off on it,
05:43maybe even pushed for it.
05:44But, man, if the last series and a half hasn't changed your view on that,
05:51it creates a lot of just worse options going forward.
05:55Yeah, and maybe the stars shouldn't be dictating your roster.
06:00I think that that's an epidemic in the NBA where you have star players dictating the roster
06:07and then they don't end in results.
06:10And then where's the accountability for that, right?
06:12I watched a video clip the other night.
06:15It was, I think, from a few years ago.
06:18A commentator was going off on James Harden talking about all the changes that were made
06:22at his behest and on his behalf, and yet he's failing to deliver in the biggest moments.
06:29And at some point, your players have to be accountable.
06:32Kenny Atkinson can't go out there and run the sets.
06:34Kenny Atkinson can't go out there and play defense and fight through screens and things like that.
06:40There was one clip that went viral on social media last night where Donovan,
06:45I think it was Dean Wade, just had the look of exasperation because Donovan Mitchell
06:49didn't even bother to fight through a screen.
06:52Like, that's effort, okay?
06:54And then the other thing, too, is why are we load managing guys unless they're hurt?
06:57And again, I don't know what's going on with Donovan.
06:59Donovan needs to be playing 40 minutes a game.
07:02James Harden probably needs to be playing 20 minutes a game right now with the way he's playing.
07:06You should not be load managing players in the playoffs.
07:11That's the way she goes this time of year.
07:13That's why you do your load management during the regular season,
07:16so you can extend the minutes as needed in the postseason.
07:20And Donovan's needed on the floor for longer stretches.
07:25He should not sit a single minute of the fourth quarter in any playoff game.
07:29And I don't understand why he's sitting for significant stretches in the fourth quarter
07:34of playoff games right now.
07:35Rookie minicamp getting underway at Berea.
07:38Your thoughts on that?
07:39What do we really learn at rookie minicamp?
07:41And by the way, listen.
07:43Can Casey Concepcion and can Devin catch footballs on air with no defenders on him?
07:51That's what we're going to learn about.
07:52I like the chances.
07:54I think they're going to look good.
07:55You know, we'll have a little timeline cleanse today.
07:57We'll have some Devin Boston and some Casey Concepcion video.
08:03Maybe we'll get some Spencer Feneau on the blocking dummies today, too.
08:10That'll be our...
08:11Darrell, can we pump the brakes on this being the world's greatest draft?
08:14Okay, look.
08:15On paper, it sounds great, right?
08:18Everything sounds great, but I'm so tired of...
08:20Now who's Mr. Negative Nelly?
08:21He's not going to allow us to have any sunshine whatsoever.
08:25Can we wait?
08:27How did you get stuck with the no fun police today, Lima?
08:30This is on the Cavs.
08:32This is what happened.
08:33Listen, look, I'm very excited about this class they brought in.
08:36I'm down with it, but I'm tired of...
08:39Oh, it's an A.
08:40It's the greatest class in the history of Browns.
08:41Dude, if McNeil Ward has an interception today, you're going to hear all about it.
08:46By the way, are you going to start doing...
08:48Are you going to do reps for quarterbacks?
08:51No.
08:51Did they bring in another quarterback?
08:53Do they have another quarterback?
08:54Do they have a fifth quarterback?
08:56Because if you've got the two veterans that aren't there, you need a fourth...
09:00Yeah, whatever.
09:01I'm sure they'll have someone on a tryout basis.
09:03Yeah, they've got to bring somebody in, don't they?
09:05Yeah, they'll probably have a tryout.
09:06So will you do snap count on Taylor Green?
09:08That's my question.
09:09Do we know...
09:09Are you going to count the snaps that he has?
09:11Are you going to give us percentages?
09:13Are you going to tell us that he was 12 for 12 and passing under five yards?
09:18Can you please give us the stats?
09:19Because otherwise it doesn't matter.
09:20This camp doesn't exist.
09:22I'm here to tell you, of the things that I do not care about, it's quarterback completion
09:29percentage in a rookie minicamp or in an OTA.
09:34Daryl, you don't care, but someone else will.
09:37Someone else will, and it'll be the headline on Monday.
09:39And you know what?
09:41Hat tip to them.
09:42God bless them.
09:42All right, Daryl, we got into a heated debate about Brendan Sorsby and not even about his
09:48abilities to throw a football or how good he is.
09:51It was about...
09:52Yeah, a little bit of a problem, child.
09:53Well, it's whether or not, and that's what I wanted to get to, whether or not somebody
09:56who right now is under investigation by gambling officials in the state of Ohio and the Ohio
10:00Casino Control Commission, and they were confirming that with the New York Times yesterday.
10:06So, he's going to potentially be available in a supplemental draft, and if that happens,
10:12do the Browns have to consider this as a potential solution as a guy who might have been in the
10:18first round next year in that loaded draft?
10:20I would not, because I just, I think you're playing with fire there.
10:25I understand the talent, the physical tools, all that, but yeah, I think that there's just
10:33too much there and too much risk.
10:36You know, I'm seeing folks saying, oh, that teams will bid a second-round pick on him,
10:42which I think is absolutely crazy.
10:43Remember, the last time the Browns went into a supplemental draft, I believe it was Josh Gordon.
10:48Yeah.
10:49And, I mean...
10:51Actually, they're pretty good at supplemental draft, Gordon and...
10:53That Kosar dude?
10:54Yeah.
10:55The quarterback?
10:55Yeah.
10:56The kid from Boardman?
10:57And look, Josh, when he was available to play, was, I think, the most gifted wide receiver
11:04I've seen in person.
11:08So, yeah, I think that where there are...
11:13I just, I think it's too much off-the-field stuff to contend with, and I don't know if he's
11:18under investigation, obviously.
11:21Under investigation does not mean guilt.
11:23That's very important to point out, but I just, I think that there's too many red flags
11:29there to take that type of risk at that type of position.
11:34You know, if he played another position, if he was a receiver or something else, I would probably
11:41consider it more.
11:42But because of the importance of the quarterback position and, I don't know, the availability
11:47of said player at said position, I just, I don't know that the Browns can afford to take
11:53that type of risk with a future draft pick, especially a future high draft pick.
11:58When you have a quarterback class that's expected to be coming out in 2027.
12:04Daryl, this was just a really fun time.
12:08Get off the ipecac.
12:09This is...
12:10That's a good reference.
12:12All right, Daryl, thank you very much.
12:13We look forward to maybe seeing you at the Cavs game if you recover coming up tomorrow.
12:17Wow.
12:17I'm...
12:18Godspeed, Daryl Ryder.
12:19Godspeed.
12:20I'm loading up on all the vitamins and minerals I can.
12:23All right, Daryl Ryder, joining us as always, brought to you by Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's
12:27premier jewelry store.
