28:01Tonight, Drag Race celebrates the wicked and wonderful woman behind Elvira, mistress of the dark, Cassandra Peterson.
28:12Do you know you're one of my favorite judges ever?
28:15No, but if you hum a few bars, I can fake it.
28:20Like all pop culture icons, Cassandra was born in Manhattan, Kansas, a tiny farm town.
28:27As a young girl, she was in an accident that left her badly burned.
28:31Cassandra's scars made her feel like an outcast.
28:34She found comfort in monsters like Frankenstein and became obsessed with horror films.
28:39By 14, the blossoming entertainer was working as a go-go dancer at a gay club called the Purple Cow.
28:45Cassandra credits the drag queens at the club with teaching her how to walk, how to dress, and how to
28:50do, well, just about everything.
28:51By age 17, she was a Las Vegas showgirl, performing in the wildly popular review Vive la Girls.
28:59On a fateful date with Elvis Presley, he convinced Cassandra to pursue a singing career, and she did, touring Europe
29:06as the lead singer of the band E! Latins 80.
29:09Cassandra even landed a small role in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.
29:14But still, she struggled to find meaningful work.
29:18Her luck started to turn around when she joined the world-famous Groundlings, working alongside soon-to-be comedy legend
29:25Paul Reubens.
29:26Then, an audition to be the hostess of a late-night horror movie show would change her life forever.
29:33Tapping into her drag roots, she donned a black bouffant wig, blood-red lips, and a form-fitting gown with
29:39a plunging neckline.
29:41Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, was born.
29:44Her sharp wit, risque double entendres, and valley girl attitude made her a breakout star.
