00:00good evening good afternoon good morning depending on where you are in the world
00:04would like to start a new series for April chess coaching series talking
00:11about in game training with calculation and plans and analysis especially which
00:19would be calculation analysis and planning with tactics so we're looking
00:26at a position it's a fairly complex position here when we look at this in
00:32game what we want to do first is look at the quantity of the pieces so we see
00:40we've got two minor pieces against white has two minor pieces two bishops against
00:45blacks one minor piece which is a knight and black has a majority pawns which is
00:50four pawns against two the interesting features of the position is that white
00:56has a passport on b5 and the position of the queen also where you just played
01:02d5 so this is something to think about but before I go into that I'd like to
01:08first think all the people watching this on Facebook hopefully you do enjoy it and
01:15learn quite a bit from this this is from this is from a famous
01:22very master game of a recent tournament still going on there's one of Carlson's
01:28games against I don't remember his name now but anyway the point is not so much
01:34who's playing but it's the technique we look at this position as black you kind of feel
01:39like okay I've got the queen versus the rook he's got the extra piece and I get an
01:43extra pawn so I'm quite a bit up in material okay so because essentially it's a bishop and
01:49rook versus queen which isn't and bishop and queen pawn pawn so rook bishop and pawn
01:55versus queen that's equal but then I have two extra pawns excuse me three extra pawns we
02:02have the two we have three passed pawns the d pawn g pawn h pawn okay now it is white
02:10to play here
02:12and at this point I believe white was on now the important thing is not only in the middle game
02:19how
02:19to convert a wing but also in the end game we look at this position there's a lot to analyze
02:24here I'm
02:25going to go through it when we analyze the position just like in the middle game you want to look
02:30at
02:31the most forcing moves first so those are going to be the checks and the captures so let's look for
02:38simpler purposes look let's get the captures first then the checks okay I'm going to do it in the order
02:45that I put this in now from a strategic standpoint what we want to do is understand white's goal what
02:51is white trying to do besides of course survive this onslaught of the queen and the knight against the
02:57king and impossible forks also we want to look at the last move which is d5 we'd like to look
03:04first
03:04of all that white would like to play b6 and this is sort of the critical move well after b6
03:10I take
03:11the pawn say so what's so good you play b7 burping the queen but then we have this check notice
03:20that
03:20nothing can take that okay we can't take that piece because of course I took now the knight is guarding
03:26the pawn is guarding the knight this is checks only if he plays king c3 play queen b3 notice the
03:32queen is guarding the pawn and the knight and the pawn is guarding the queen so it's you have a
03:39triangle
03:39of prediction here so after queen b3 check king d4 we play queen b6 notice here that we have a
03:49fork hitting
03:50both the pawn the rook and the king this is a double basically double four and after this check if
03:58he plays king c4 now
03:59taking my pawn I'm going to take the rook with check okay so that will win of course be winning
04:07because of course not only do we win the rook but even after he takes the knight we're going to
04:14take his pawn so it's going to be essentially I'm going to be up
04:18still going to be up two pawns plus I'm going to be up the exchange queen versus bishop which is
04:22more than winning so let's look at this other idea okay so we have another idea okay the other idea
04:33is well instead of him being able to take the bishop why don't we move it back because here we're
04:39actually attacking the queen and we want to do is prevent black from coming onto the b file right and
04:46he'd like to then push b6
04:47b7 b8 so black plays a nice move um black will play queen e2 check this is the main line
04:57before I show you the winning material I'm going to go back to the other choices
05:01okay so white will play basic bishop b3 queen will play queen e2 check rook c2 looks good right because
05:09we've
05:10we're blocking the check we give up the rook but it looks like he's
05:13um but what he's not seeing is 93 check so here we could take
05:21the bishop and we could
05:24kind of delay it out more you know
05:27okay he wants to play you know I take the bishop
05:30rook will come back maybe hoping for repetition
05:33but no 93 we want to use both pieces and bring them closer to the king
05:38and by proxy we'll bring them closer to the pawn
05:41king c3 now queen takes e3 now we've won the bishop there's a pin on the knight
05:46and we're threatening the discovered so after bishop takes d5
05:50we have 91 check notice that black now has
05:56black queen has stopped b6 and will be winning the rook
06:00so I'll go back to the the rest of this later
06:04let's talk about what else is possible here
06:07so of course after queen b6 we'll go back to the pain line after b6
06:11uh d takes c b7 knight d3 check king c3 queen b3 king d4
06:19and
06:22after queen b6 king takes c4
06:24black always also has a nice move of knight to b2 check
06:28but why is this such a great move we could just take the rook right
06:32well after knight b2 king c3 and 9a4
06:37we're threatening to uh set up a mating net
06:40because after king c4
06:42or king d3 let's say play king d3
06:45we take now
06:47right
06:47notice we've got the king sort of cut off
06:51the squares are cut off and of course the bishop on e3 is in the way
06:55uh bishop and a d2 knight b2 check
06:58king e3 and queen takes b7
07:01notice we're cutting him off even more
07:03so this is the other alternative
07:05so after queen takes c7
07:10let's say uh king c4
07:12right knight a4 king c4
07:14queen takes c7 check obviously win the rook
07:16but then we're going to continue in a different way
07:19you would think we would take the pawn now
07:22if we don't take the pawn it's because there's a mate coming up
07:25or something else sophisticated
07:27so we want to look at other options
07:29is there a mate
07:30so queen c5
07:31king d3
07:32queen c3 check
07:34cutting off all the squares and win for the mate
07:36king e2
07:37queen c2 check
07:39now if we're checking him he doesn't have time to move the pawn
07:42king f1
07:43queen d1 check
07:45now white can play king g2
07:47we play queen f3
07:49king g1
07:50knight c3
07:51also bringing our knight with us
07:53now if he queens now
07:56we have
07:58so if he queens
08:03that's one
08:04you say okay queens
08:05then this has been refuted
08:07no
08:09because if he queens now
08:10we play knight to c3
08:12excuse me f to queens
08:15he plays knight e2 check
08:18then of course king h2
08:21then king h2
08:22and then we have simply queen h3 mate
08:24well why is it
08:26what made this possible
08:27because we have this passed pawn on g4
08:29well let's say he plays a savior
08:31he plays bishop f2
08:32okay
08:34we're gonna play knight e2 check anyway
08:36oh sorry excuse me
08:37so if he
08:38let's say queens instead
08:40play the knight e2
08:41king h2 and queen h3 mate
08:43well let's say he plays bishop f2 instead
08:45instead of queen h1
08:46we're gonna play knight e2
08:48king f1
08:49knight g3 check
08:50notice the bishop cannot take
08:52because the queen has pinned the bishop
08:53and king g1
08:55we can play either king g1 or queen e2
08:57well king e2 simply we're
08:58you got a mate on e2
09:00after king g1
09:02we'll play queen h1
09:03notice the bishop has gotten the way
09:05and the knight is supporting it
09:07but each time there's a check
09:10so let's say after king g1
09:13we play knight e2
09:14king h2
09:15and queen h3
09:19alright so
09:21so we've solved the problem
09:22first we want to look at all the way through
09:24what is his main idea
09:26well his main idea is to push the pawn all the way through
09:28well let's look at this
09:29what all turn is
09:31okay we thought well it'd be clever if we play bishop b3
09:33because we're hitting the pool
09:34what if we just simply just play bishop takes b5
09:37bishop takes d5
09:38after all you know
09:40he can support b6 b7
09:43and then maybe there's some sort of check
09:45and then he can move the rook down and support the queen right
09:48that's the idea
09:50well bishop d5 just loses the piece
09:52it looks good but then we have to look
09:54is the piece guarded
09:56no we take
09:57so bishop a7 now
09:59and we simply play queen takes b5
10:02and of course it's winning
10:04so we know bishop takes b5
10:06but bishop takes b5
10:08is certainly not
10:09right
10:10so y is winning in that line
10:12okay
10:13so let's say there's another idea
10:15let's say he gives me check
10:16this is the other forcing line
10:18so basically we look at the
10:20the ones closest to the pawns
10:23then
10:23or we get checks
10:26and then at the end we look at
10:28because we want to look at
10:29the pieces closest to the pawns
10:31see how we can refute that first
10:32and then forcing lines with the check
10:34so after rook d7
10:35we have
10:37excuse me
10:37we're here
10:38rook d7
10:39oops
10:40sorry
10:40oops
10:40sorry
10:41let's say he plays rook d7 now
10:43so he can't take the pawn
10:46okay he can't take the pawn
10:47what is he going to play
10:49well
10:49he played knight d3
10:51oops
10:52oh sorry
10:53knight d3 check
10:54say what's so good about that
10:55you can just think
10:57yes but if he takes
11:00right let's say he takes here
11:02we have bishop takes
11:04so let's say if he takes
11:05queen takes d3
11:06so you say what's so good about that
11:08I can play rook d6 and b6
11:11or b6
11:12so let's look at that idea
11:15rook d6
11:16king h5
11:17you know if it's a one move threat
11:19there's nothing you can do
11:21rook f6
11:22g3
11:23also with black
11:24you also have to consider
11:25black has
11:27a past g pawn
11:29and the king will be getting in front of the pawn
11:31and promoting the pawn from
11:33from
11:33you know
11:34to push forward
11:35and after bishop d1
11:37to blockade that
11:38queen d2 check
11:39king b1
11:40queen b1
11:42notice here
11:43after the check
11:44if he goes back
11:45we're going to win the bishop
11:47so king a2
11:48queen takes g1
11:50you play b6
11:51queen f2
11:52so okay
11:53how is he going to make progress
11:55the king is going to come up to support the pawn
11:56right
11:57king a3
11:59g2
12:00now
12:00what we need to do is calculate this
12:04you say okay
12:05even if he can push the pawn for it
12:07I have g2
12:08b7
12:09I have a check
12:11the king over
12:13we get a second check
12:14why
12:15we're going to take it and give it made
12:19rook takes f5 check
12:21king g4
12:25well
12:25he can get rid of this pawn
12:28on d5
12:29it's not going to help him
12:30also rook f7 is possible
12:32so we look actually
12:33at the analysis here
12:37yeah it doesn't even consider rook f5
12:39well
12:41sorry rook f7
12:43it considers rook takes d5
12:47so
12:47rook f7
12:51yeah I believe there's a check anyway
12:54it's not going to help him
12:55we have a check here
12:55and then another check
12:56and then there's a mate
12:57coming up
12:58so
12:59we'll disregard that for now
13:01rook takes d5
13:04and so notice how we're cutting him off here
13:07we're playing queen e3
13:08where is he going to go
13:09so we're going to play queen e3
13:12to cut the king off
13:13they're going to play queen e3
13:14giving check
13:15rook a5 now
13:18just kind of a desperado
13:19it's like okay
13:20take my queen out
13:21I get a queen
13:22but still we'll be a queen down
13:24the queen takes b7 check
13:26right
13:27and
13:28after queen b7 check
13:30king a2
13:31we play queen at b
13:33there's just two pieces
13:34both
13:35the rook on e3
13:37can go to b3
13:38but the one on b7
13:40it can go to b3
13:41so the one on b
13:41goes to b3
13:42let's check
13:43king a1
13:44and then what
13:46well
13:47we can see
13:48this is
13:49we've got
13:50what was it
13:51king a1
13:52we have a mate next
13:53don't we
13:53yeah
13:54we have this mate
13:57so we can
13:58we can clearly see
13:59after we win the pawn
14:00the rook's off
14:01we've cut him off
14:04that's certainly going to lose
14:06so he can't take the bishop on d3
14:11let's say he plays king c3
14:12notice where he's thinking
14:14okay I'm going to attack that knight twice
14:16also I've got the pawn on d5 attack twice
14:20and so he's thinking
14:24okay king c3
14:25d takes c4 now
14:29so we have to consider
14:31after d takes c4
14:33he plays b6
14:34he says okay fine
14:35I'm just going to run off the board
14:36but queen b3
14:38king d4
14:39queen takes pawn
14:41same pattern again
14:43king takes c4
14:44queen c6 check
14:45king over
14:46and then
14:46at this point we've forked
14:48what we're doing is getting on the same diagonal as the rook
14:52and also following up with a check
14:54so king d3
14:55and queen takes d7 check
14:57is winning
14:58even after bishop d4
15:00because now
15:00you've got a
15:01I mean any
15:04even a beginner could win this
15:05because all we do is push up on the board
15:08this bishop's pinned
15:09and it's very straightforward
15:11now there is another one odd option
15:15so after b6
15:16queen
15:18b6
15:18okay here we go
15:19so let's say
15:21d6
15:23b6
15:24queen b3 check
15:25so instead of playing b6 now
15:29suppose he plays king takes c4
15:33let's just use
15:34let's promote the variation
15:36king takes c4
15:37what do you think
15:40okay
15:42what we want to do is look at this idea of playing knight b2 check
15:46discovered attack on the rook
15:47while also hitting the king
15:50and then we take the rook
15:52and then we also going to stop this ball
15:55worst case scenario
15:56put the queen on b7
15:59so we have knight b2 check
16:02let's say king goes up to c5
16:03we take the rook
16:05and b6
16:07right
16:09because we can't play king b7 so let's say we play b6 or let's say king b6
16:16he's in front of the pawn
16:17if he plays b6 i play queen b7
16:19that's what we need to
16:21consider we have two passed pawns
16:23we're just going to marsh them down the board
16:26okay
16:26what we'll want to do is
16:30we'll want to get both pawns rolling
16:32as quickly as possible
16:33so possibly g3 here
16:34and then h5 h4
16:37we're going to play h5 h4
16:38it's even then still going to be winning
16:40so after king c4
16:42let's see if the engine agrees
16:46yeah knight b2 check
16:47notice that
16:48well if we've done that
16:50we've given them a check
16:52and then skewered
16:54the king so we can win the rook
16:56so after
16:57let's say king c5
16:59going all in
17:00of course obviously either way
17:02whether it goes to c4 or c5
17:05right
17:07we're going to win the rook
17:08pretty straight forward right
17:10and then even now
17:12we can still take this
17:15okay he doesn't have queen b7
17:19um
17:21there's king b4
17:23and let's see if you play queen e7 now
17:26you have to check
17:28and what happens is
17:29if you place king a4 now
17:32I'm just going to take the bishop
17:34you say well
17:35he plays b7 right
17:37ah
17:38not
17:38you have to consider
17:41when we move on to another
17:43square
17:43does he get on the same diagonal
17:45color diagonal with the 4
17:47we do
17:48that's what we need for a check
17:49and of course we have made in 7
17:51so
17:51let's add a queen b3
17:54we take the pawn with check
17:57king c4
17:59g3
18:00notice this is pretty straight forward
18:01we just push the pawn down the board
18:03king b4
18:04g2
18:06king e5
18:07and we get a queen
18:09okay here we go
18:10we're going to cut him off
18:11just a very basic chess here
18:14queen d4 check
18:16notice he can't go to c5 or c6
18:19then he is forced over to the only square king e6
18:22and then
18:22we have a couple mates
18:24we can go to e4
18:25with a mate
18:27because of course he can
18:28we can go
18:30queen on b to e4
18:32for a mate
18:32or
18:34we can go queen on
18:35d to be
18:39oh excuse me
18:40queen on
18:42on
18:43b to d7
18:46both our mates
18:48notice how we
18:49it's kind of a cross mate
18:50where we
18:51it's like an x-ray
18:52where it goes on both sides
18:56so
18:56we can see either way
18:58this is winning
19:00what I want
19:00one of the practices you want to do
19:02is not rely on the engine
19:03look at your analysis first
19:04of the main points
19:05and then compare it to the engine
19:07says
19:07okay
19:08that's the main idea
19:10okay
19:11so if we continue on
19:13knight b2 check
19:14king c5
19:16uh
19:16we have to
19:18we know after knight b2
19:19king c5
19:20queen d7
19:21queen d7
19:21and d6
19:22which is
19:22which is
19:24futile but it's the best
19:26trying to support
19:27that
19:27the king
19:28it's still not going to work
19:29because after knight a4
19:31then we push
19:31away
19:32so you use the knight
19:33to push him away
19:34to the diagonal
19:35then the queen executes it
19:37okay
19:38so let's look
19:39we looked at that
19:41let's look at our
19:41other main
19:42major possibility
19:43how about we play
19:45the rook check
19:46to support the pawn push
19:48so after rook to c6
19:50king h5
19:52bishop takes f2
19:53you say okay
19:54I've supported
19:54the pawn push
19:56and I've won your knight
19:57what are you going to do
19:59here's where
20:01it's tricky
20:01queen b2 check
20:02so what we're going to do
20:04is we're going to
20:04immediately check the king
20:06well four king
20:07king b3
20:08and then we take
20:09the bishop
20:10notice we had both
20:11under attack
20:12but the thing is
20:13what he wanted to do
20:13was check me
20:14so he could take the knight
20:15figuring that we get rid
20:17of this meeting
20:18so we play rook
20:20takes c4
20:21now queen takes f2
20:22now
20:22we're stopping that pawn
20:24to go to b6
20:25rook c8
20:27and then we simply
20:28just play
20:29basic chess
20:30g3
20:31he can't play b6
20:32right
20:33rook g8
20:34now to stop the pawn
20:35queen e3 check
20:38notice we're positioning
20:39myself closer to the pawn
20:40giving check
20:41while preparing
20:42to get in front of the pawn
20:43queen b4
20:44queen e1 check
20:45okay let's say
20:47a kid plays
20:47king c7
20:48we have queen e7 check
20:50notice we got to
20:51that second
20:52or the seventh ring
20:53from white's point
20:54here right
20:54king c6
20:57queen e6
20:58now
20:59king b7
21:01queen g8
21:01now if we position
21:03ourselves
21:05so we're forking
21:06the rook
21:07either we're going to
21:08get in front of it
21:09or we're going to
21:09get the last one
21:10the back rank
21:13and then even if
21:14we trade it off
21:15we've got the g pawn
21:16h pawn
21:16it's more than winning
21:18queen c6
21:19queen e6
21:20we notice we're going
21:21to win the rook
21:22and so obviously
21:24after a take
21:24he moves
21:25we check again
21:27and then we push
21:28the g pawn
21:29notice we want to have
21:30two pieces working
21:31together so we just
21:32push the g pawn
21:33get another queen
21:35get a queen there
21:37so
21:39here he could
21:40he could play
21:40because he can't play b7
21:42he can play
21:43he could
21:46he could play b7
21:48at this point
21:53and then what
21:55well we have queen b1
21:57we have also queen a1
22:00right
22:00he gets off that
22:01then I just take
22:03right
22:04queen a1 check
22:05king has to move
22:06save to b6
22:08we play queen b1
22:10king goes over
22:11and we're going to be
22:12giving maiden a couple moves
22:14so let's check that
22:15you can see how
22:17we're setting up
22:18the mating net here
22:19queen c4
22:21oh even queen c4
22:22even
22:23b7
22:24okay queen c4
22:25I was thinking actually
22:25queen c4
22:28I guess it's more precise
22:30queen c4
22:31cut him off
22:33king a5
22:35queen ajeed
22:36to c5
22:37and that's made
22:42another option of course
22:44what we can do
22:44is just play simply
22:45queen b3
22:46stop the mate
22:48so let's say he
22:49promotes to a queen
22:51we can even ignore it
22:53and give the surprising
22:54mate on a1
22:56okay
22:58so we looked at the main things
22:59right
22:59we looked at
23:01capturing
23:02playing the pawn up
23:03capturing the pawn
23:04capturing my knight
23:06and also check
23:08so what do we have
23:10left over
23:10we only have one other
23:11option left over
23:14okay
23:16so
23:16oops
23:18let's look at the last
23:19major logical option
23:21because b6
23:22we already showed
23:22doesn't work
23:23we showed
23:24bishop takes
23:25could just lose the bishop
23:26we showed bishop takes
23:28f2 doesn't work
23:29and also rook c6
23:30there's no other
23:31effective moves
23:31besides this
23:34right
23:35of course also rook d7
23:37is possible
23:37like I just showed you
23:38and that leads to a main
23:40at the end anyway
23:41so that doesn't work
23:43what you want to do
23:44is you want to look at
23:45at the end of the
23:46combination
23:47not the
23:48not the beginning of it
23:49because you want to see
23:50the result of it
23:51okay so
23:53actually you know what
23:53I should change the
23:56change the end of the
23:57stock
23:57which will be
23:57a little more effective
24:00anyway you can see here
24:02actually it's pretty
24:03I mean
24:04queen takes
24:05bishop a7
24:06and then queen b5
24:07check
24:08I mean some of it
24:08is just pretty
24:10straightforward
24:11um
24:14let's look at the
24:15last option
24:15now let's go into
24:16detail about how
24:17you think the last
24:18of it would end
24:19okay so
24:20here's a little
24:21puzzle here
24:22after bishop b3
24:26do you remember
24:26what the move is
24:27it's queen e2
24:28right
24:29queen e2
24:30rook c2
24:31knight d3
24:33so we see there's a
24:34check right
24:34the rook cannot stop it
24:35the bishop cannot stop
24:36either bishop
24:37and place king c3
24:39now we're going to
24:40take
24:41important to take
24:41the bishop
24:42because we want to
24:43get on the
24:44e3 to a
24:45b6 diagonal
24:46okay
24:48we want to get on
24:49to that diagonal
24:49to stop the pawn
24:50and also we have
24:51the discovery
24:52so after bishop
24:54takes d5
24:54now
24:55thinking okay
24:57i want to
24:59get my bishop
25:00back
25:00give my king
25:01a square
25:0291
25:04same thing again
25:04now you see it
25:06wins a rook
25:06but it's like
25:06okay prove to me
25:07it's winning
25:08okay king b2
25:10alright
25:11you're simply
25:11just going to
25:12take
25:13if you do
25:14push the pawn
25:14I'll just take
25:15this check
25:15king takes
25:16queen c5
25:17check
25:18queen b1
25:19queen takes d5
25:20notice we have a
25:214
25:22it goes back
25:22to c2
25:23now how do we
25:24get the mate
25:26once you've
25:27figured out
25:27it's winning
25:28and you can
25:29show that you've
25:30got overall
25:30winning material
25:31then it's just
25:31simply technique
25:33what's the next
25:34strategical thing
25:35well we can
25:36move our king
25:36over but we
25:37have to calculate
25:37how many moves
25:38is that going to
25:39take
25:391 2 3 4 5 6
25:40like a whole bunch
25:41of moves right
25:42versus we count
25:43here
25:431 2 3
25:45maybe 4 5
25:46and 6
25:46right
25:48how many
25:48what was it
25:49like 4 moves
25:51g3
25:51king b2
25:53g2
25:53you see
25:53you can't
25:54really stop
25:54this
25:56g2
25:56king c2
25:58queen
25:58king c3
26:00queen a1
26:01check
26:02notice that
26:03the squares
26:04on c4
26:05are cut off
26:07and when you
26:07play on a1
26:08also
26:08it cuts off
26:09all the squares
26:10on the a file
26:11and also b2
26:12so after
26:13king b4
26:17we have
26:18queen a5
26:18made
26:19the important
26:20thing is to
26:21see this
26:21crosslock
26:22this x-ray
26:23attack
26:23here
26:24the other
26:24option is
26:25after king c4
26:26is to play
26:27king c2
26:28then simply
26:29what we do
26:29is we play
26:31the other queen
26:31down
26:31from 8
26:33notice the bishop
26:35think of this
26:35queen like a bishop
26:36where it's pointing
26:37the whole
26:38diagonal
26:39from a1
26:40all the way
26:40to h8
26:42we've covered
26:42those squares
26:43well the squares
26:44we didn't cover
26:45of course
26:45is b3
26:46and d3
26:47so we just
26:48play queen
26:48on d
26:49because both
26:50can go to d1
26:51and d1
26:51and that's made
26:53so we can see
26:54that
26:56now
26:58the important
26:58thing is
26:59when you analyze
26:59this
27:02we need to be
27:03very precise
27:04about what we do
27:05but even with
27:06white to place
27:07see here
27:09is that
27:11black has some
27:12threats
27:13he has a threat
27:14of forking
27:15on e2
27:15and has a threat
27:16of taking
27:16on d3
27:18also
27:19there is this
27:20idea of playing
27:20knight d3
27:21coming out too
27:23so we can see
27:24what that is
27:26what I'm going to
27:26do is
27:28and I showed you
27:28all the answers
27:29so it's easy
27:30when you see the
27:30answer
27:32actually I'm going to
27:33show you one more
27:33thing here
27:34after
27:35excuse me
27:35let me show you
27:36one more thing
27:36bishop takes f2
27:37queen d2
27:38remember I showed you
27:38queen d1
27:40d takes c4
27:41let's say he doesn't
27:42play b6
27:47here
27:48let's say he plays
27:48bishop e1
27:50okay guess what
27:51if he takes
27:53now to come up
27:54I'm going to get
27:55closer to the pawn
27:56right
27:57queen takes e1
27:58anyway
27:58king to c2
28:01g3
28:03here's that
28:04surprise move
28:05here's g3
28:06why
28:08because it's
28:09cut off
28:10like this
28:10the best thing
28:11actually to do
28:12is use your
28:12pass pawn
28:13to queen
28:13because what
28:14it basically
28:15is a calculation
28:17so we just
28:17count 1 2 3
28:18to queen
28:20he cuts him
28:21off and then
28:21how many more
28:22because notice
28:23if we go
28:24in front of the pawn
28:25he'll try to
28:26push over
28:26check me
28:27I go here
28:28he does something
28:29else
28:30so what we do
28:31so here
28:32rook c6
28:33say okay
28:33I'm going to
28:34support
28:35this pawn
28:36by moving the rook
28:37to gain time
28:38right
28:38rook c6
28:38king at h5
28:40now
28:42let's say he plays
28:43rook d6
28:44he wants to cut him
28:45off by playing
28:46rook d2
28:47it's probably his best play
28:48now of course
28:50alternatively
28:52let's put another one in
28:55let's say he plays
28:56instead
28:57b6
29:00that's the critical thing
29:01what if he plays
29:02b6
29:02right
29:03what do you do
29:04well
29:05one of the things
29:06we do have
29:06as black
29:07we do have
29:07queen b4
29:09because we're
29:10defending
29:10we're going to
29:11play queen b4
29:12we can't play b7
29:13because we'll take
29:14and also we have
29:14the queen check
29:16so let's double check
29:17this with analysis
29:19this is the way
29:19you want to train
29:20you want to
29:21look at it first
29:22then compare it
29:22to something stronger
29:25so we
29:25first of all
29:26we had queen b4
29:27that's at the very least
29:29and the engine
29:30also mentions
29:30queen e4
29:31now queen e4
29:32of course
29:33do they already
29:34have that in there
29:35yeah queen e4
29:37also winning the rook
29:39queen e4
29:40king takes c3
29:41and you just simply
29:42tank
29:42that's winning
29:44you win the rook
29:45you stop the pawn
29:46it's over
29:48you can't stop
29:49the g pawn
29:50this is
29:51right
29:53so
29:54let's say he plays
29:55rook d6
29:56thinking he's clever
29:57because he wants to play
29:58rook to d2
30:01well what do you think
30:02is the best move here
30:04well after rook d6
30:05he just simply
30:06played g2
30:07we don't care
30:08that he's going to
30:09play b6 now
30:10because after he plays
30:11b6 what happens
30:13rook and a queen
30:16let's say he plays
30:17b7
30:19he simply just
30:20have the main
30:21notice when we
30:22looked at the pawn
30:23it has a purpose
30:24it's cutting off squares
30:26okay
30:27maybe he can't go
30:28to b3 or d3
30:29and when the queen
30:30goes to c1
30:31it's made
30:34okay so
30:36say b6
30:37so instead of b6
30:40um
30:41yep
30:41let's say he tries
30:42to play rook d1
30:43now
30:44and followed by rook b1
30:46queen e2 check anyway
30:48similar to the other line
30:50so after rook d2
30:51we're going to play
30:52queen e4
30:53and we'll get in front
30:55king c3
30:56it's sort of like
30:57you're building a bridge
30:58you go somewhere
30:59you go around
30:59so going around
31:01to build a bridge
31:02king c3
31:04then
31:05because of the check
31:06now we've got a queen
31:07that's more than winning
31:08notice that queen on g1
31:10is on that same diagonal
31:12and worst case scenario
31:13we've got queen b5
31:16we're not aiming for that
31:17but that's worst case scenario
31:19so even after
31:20of course b6
31:23now here we want to calculate
31:24we don't just want to take the par
31:26what's a faster route to get made
31:29well we can play queen c1 check
31:32this is one idea right
31:36and if we look at the engine
31:37we can also see
31:39queen g takes e3
31:42okay
31:43I'm just putting the engine there
31:45to prove that that's correct
31:47you can intuitively obviously know
31:49that white black is winning
31:50but we want to find the precise way
31:52of doing it
31:53so obviously here
31:55you know
31:57if you place king d4 now
31:59right
32:00you just take the pawn
32:02and then where is he going
32:03you go to a3
32:05and if he goes to a3
32:08I've got uh
32:10wait a8
32:12oh yeah sorry
32:12excuse me
32:13I have the other one
32:13so just a simple stare
32:15just a simple made like this
32:17because you've got them cut off
32:18so he has to go to c3
32:21really at this point
32:22well if he goes to c3 here
32:24instead
32:26then simply what do we have
32:28queen b3
32:29we're going to use this bishop
32:31to take away squares
32:33and to have its role
32:34see d5 just looks like
32:36it hits the bishop
32:37but long term
32:38if he tries to do anything
32:39to disrupt or interfere
32:41with white being able
32:44to defend on b6
32:45then we just take the bishop
32:49notice black had this whole
32:52e4 to b7 diagonal
32:54already set up
32:55so you can already see
32:59that the b6
33:00you don't even have to care
33:02about that
33:02because you've got the queen
33:03coming up
33:05and then
33:07after b7
33:08we have the mate
33:08so even if he queen
33:09we still have mate
33:11so what happens
33:12is a couple moves
33:13before to determine
33:14the evaluation
33:17so after rook to d4
33:20right
33:21we have queen
33:23and then from here
33:25it's either made in 3
33:26or made in 2
33:28so one is
33:30if you play king b2
33:31it's made in 2
33:31right
33:32we take the
33:33obviously take the rook
33:34because it's undefended
33:35king a3
33:38and then we just go
33:39and move the
33:41oops not the e1
33:42sorry
33:44excuse me
33:44let's redo that
33:48we're going to do this
33:53we're going to play
33:54queen at d
33:55to a1
33:56because we want to cut off
33:58the square on b4
34:00notice our pawn on c4
34:02has cut off b3 already
34:07alternatively
34:09so we're going to
34:10rook d4
34:12instead of going to
34:15let's say
34:16oops
34:16well
34:17let's say it plays
34:18rook d4
34:20because the rook's no longer attacked
34:22right
34:22then we've got
34:23medium 2
34:24gain b1 check
34:26remember we're going to take away
34:28we've got this
34:29we've got g1
34:31all the way to
34:32for example
34:33all the way
34:33course technically
34:34all the way to a7
34:35but let's just say
34:35practically
34:36all the way
34:38past
34:39to d4
34:41covered
34:41and we also have
34:42b1 all the way to e4
34:43covered
34:43so what's left over
34:45well
34:46we have d2 and c3
34:47so let's say c3
34:50then we have the e3
34:51for mate
34:53and
34:53conversely
34:54after c2
34:55if he goes to d2
34:59then we have
35:00e1
35:01for mate
35:02oh excuse me
35:04let's
35:04let's
35:05we have
35:05the one on g1
35:06to e1
35:08for mate
35:08why
35:09because we're
35:09we want to keep
35:11the c2 and b3
35:12squares cut off
35:15so the idea is
35:16even if it comes up
35:17we're going to move
35:18the g pawn
35:19and even if we have to
35:21give up the queen
35:22for
35:23the pawn
35:24we've still got
35:24two pawns
35:25running forward
35:26long term
35:27he's not going to be able
35:28to survive it
35:29as long as he can't
35:31like
35:31win my f pawn
35:33and we've got both
35:34of those pawns
35:35forward
35:36more than likely
35:37even then
35:37it's still going to
35:38do that
35:38because we have
35:39like g3
35:40king comes up
35:41and then
35:42right
35:43we go
35:43h4
35:44we play h5
35:45as a waiting move
35:46because the f
35:46pawn can't go anywhere
35:48then we play h3
35:50and we move the other
35:51pawn
35:51and it's like
35:51where's the rook
35:52going to go
35:53so probably
35:54maybe the king
35:55would come closer
35:56but
35:59with the king
36:00with the king being
36:00here of course
36:02if we already have
36:03g3 in play
36:04this is very bad
36:05because we only have
36:05two
36:05we only need
36:06two tempos
36:07to tempo
36:08to win that
36:09but
36:09anyway
36:15this would be
36:17even with the rook
36:18trying to help out
36:19a still amount
36:21so when we look at a position
36:22remember something
36:23here's
36:24here's some of the takeaways
36:25from today's lesson
36:27is
36:27we want to look at
36:28the most forcing moves first
36:29we want to look at captures
36:31and we want to look at
36:34checks
36:35remember
36:36and also
36:37we want to consider
36:38the overall
36:39goal of what he's trying to do
36:40what is his point
36:41we want to get
36:42the b pawn
36:43move forward
36:45so even with white
36:46to play
36:47where he could take on f2
36:50where was that
36:50he took on f2
36:57consider bishop takes b3
36:58so let's say
37:00he takes on f2
37:01if he did
37:03we're going to push
37:04the king away first
37:06then we're going to take
37:07and then if he takes
37:09oh wait
37:10let's say he
37:11oh excuse me
37:13let's
37:13okay excuse me
37:14instead of bishop b1
37:15let's say he takes
37:17right
37:20we're simply just going to take
37:22our strategic thing
37:23is we're going to get
37:24in front of the pawn
37:24stop it from moving
37:25so rook c2
37:27queen f1 check
37:29and then we're going to win the pawn
37:31pretty straightforward stuff
37:34queen against rook
37:35is very easily won
37:37very very easily won
37:38even at the lower levels
37:41and of course
37:42after
37:42after the king
37:43was obviously
37:44that's a check
37:45he has to move again
37:46and then we simply
37:47just move the pawn
37:50right so
37:52even if the king goes over
37:54anything
37:54right we have another check
37:57the pawn moves up
37:58you give a check
37:59to gain a tempo
38:00to push the pawn
38:01that's the idea
38:01and obviously
38:02this is winning
38:03for black as well
38:05so
38:06we looked at that
38:07we look at
38:08our main idea
38:09for black
38:10is to play b6
38:11that loses
38:11right
38:12remember because
38:13we had the bishop
38:14under attack
38:15and when you push
38:16we give check
38:17cannot take the knight
38:18and when he moves
38:20the king
38:21we've got the check
38:22we're setting up
38:23a mating net
38:24after king b4
38:25queen b6
38:26will win the rook
38:27king c4
38:28excuse me
38:29and then
38:30we take the rook
38:31and finish it off
38:34notice we
38:34he cannot stop us
38:35from winning
38:36with the
38:37pawn on b7
38:39and then even
38:40if he wins the knight
38:41and win the pawn
38:42and the net result
38:43is queen against bishop
38:44that's obviously one
38:45but you saw that
38:46even with his best play
38:48where he tries
38:49against pawn
38:49further
38:50it doesn't work
38:52obviously
38:53blunder
38:53queen takes b5
38:54doesn't work
38:55push b5
38:56and if you try
38:57to attack it again
38:58which what we're
38:59going to do
39:00is we're going to
39:00move the other
39:01piece in play
39:01so even if you
39:03get rid of it
39:04my queen takes
39:05rook d6
39:06check
39:07gains a tempo
39:08we're just going
39:09to play the cheap
39:10one
39:11so
39:12then what
39:13if you place
39:14for example
39:15b6 now
39:18simply queen e2
39:19why queen e2
39:20well
39:22where's the queen
39:23going to go
39:24if he goes to b3
39:26we're just getting
39:26another tempo
39:27by taking
39:28and if he comes up
39:31right
39:31we just move
39:32the queen now
39:34so okay
39:34b7 now
39:35right
39:36let's say
39:36you stubborn
39:37b7
39:37right
39:38move the queen
39:40let's say
39:40he gets a queen
39:43and queen c5
39:44we have to see
39:46there is a checkmate
39:48here
39:51obviously
39:51queen against rook
39:52is still going to be
39:53quite quick
39:53even though he got the pawn
39:55we're still queen against rook
39:57king a4
39:58it's just a simple mate
39:59here
39:59we got the queen a1
40:02right
40:02queen a1 here
40:03right
40:04king d3
40:06and then simply queen c4
40:09the reason why this is so
40:10the reason why white
40:12is because
40:13he can't get that pawn
40:15through and also
40:16he's down material
40:17and he's going to be
40:18checkmated
40:20so
40:21also the other thing
40:22about it
40:23is he also looked
40:24so he looked at
40:24possibilities
40:25looked at the strategic idea
40:27of playing d6
40:28that's it
40:28we looked at
40:29just taking the bishop
40:31bishop takes pawn
40:32well that just drops a piece
40:34or if d7
40:35doesn't work
40:36because we just take the bishop
40:37or we can play knight d3
40:43also
40:44you also looked at this idea
40:45of playing bishop takes f2
40:47okay
40:50we looked at the idea
40:51of playing bishop takes f2
40:54remember what black's doing
40:56after you took
40:56black's replies with a 4
40:59right
41:00because then it doesn't
41:01give him time to move the piece
41:04but in this case
41:05because the pawn
41:07is cutting off certain squares
41:09right
41:12let's say
41:13let's say here he plays
41:15even
41:15I don't know what he's going to play
41:17rook c6 check
41:18right
41:20king h5
41:22and then rook takes c4
41:23fine
41:24queen takes f2
41:26he can't support the pawn
41:28what's he going to do
41:29there's no more checks
41:30the g pawn's support is coming down the board
41:34so we saw that as well
41:35and then if we saw the main line again
41:38we saw even if we're attacking the queen
41:41we still got this fork
41:43right
41:43forking both the bishop on b3
41:45and the pawn on b5
41:47the idea is
41:48we get on a square that's going to be on the same diagonal as
41:51where the bishop is
41:53or a larger piece
41:54like the rook
41:54so notice even when he blocks
41:57we gave the check
41:58because
41:58we bring the knight and the queen together
42:01for a check
42:02king c3
42:03we take the bishop
42:05this fork anyway
42:06and even after bishop b5
42:08best case scenario
42:09we've got discovered check
42:11within the rook
42:13there really isn't a lot for him to do
42:16I mean
42:16a lot you can really do in this position
42:19I guess technically
42:20you could try to save the rook
42:21or rook h2
42:22kind of
42:24you could do that instead
42:26we play knight c5
42:27this discovered check
42:30king b4
42:32knight d3
42:35okay so we're cutting
42:36we're going to start cutting it off
42:38we have
42:38even if king a5
42:40we can put queen c5 here
42:44yeah
42:45let's say
42:46king a5
42:46oh excuse me
42:47no
42:48even worse
42:49it's just
42:49queen a5
42:51queen a5 check
42:52mate right
42:52so these pawns are kind of in their way
42:56and betraying the king
42:58where
42:58it's
43:00it's pretty much cramping
43:01white's position
43:02alright
43:03so even with best play here
43:05we're going to use the knight with it
43:07use this discovered check
43:09right
43:10take it
43:11right
43:12even if you push this bar we take
43:14and it doesn't matter
43:15we get another four
43:17so everything is checked for
43:19gain of time
43:21and obviously just move the rook
43:23the pawn down
43:24give the check
43:25and then
43:26we have it
43:28alright
43:29what I'm going to do is
43:30for other people who want to practice these
43:32type of positions
43:35I'm going to be putting these positions
