00:06good evening good afternoon and good morning depending on where you are in the world
00:09would like to introduce you to june series of the continued study for the end game this
00:16is the end game series for june that's continued now this will be part uh this will be part one
00:25for june and we're going to continue on with the 100 critical positions or most important
00:32positions uh from the end game now keep in mind i'm taking this from jesus de laville is 100 end
00:38games you must know or you should know and what i'm going to do is i'm going to talk about
00:44how to win
00:45we're talking about working pun endings now and we're going to start with the working pun ending
00:50series now the question is um how do we win rook versus pawn the first thing you want to uh
00:59look
00:59at in the end game is positioning positioning of the pawn and positioning of the king king is past
01:06the uh the middle of the board would be on the fifth rank and then uh notice the pawn is
01:12going towards
01:12where it says eight that is the uh the rank going horizontally right though it's a it's pointing
01:21up this way eight is pointing the other way okay also our pawn is also in the fifth rank our
01:28king
01:29our black king has a sort of out of play on on the third rank on a3 and we have
01:35a rook on d1 black
01:36on d1 white's pawn on that is on f5 and king's uh and the king is on g5 square now
01:47what i'm going to do is
01:50i'm going to
01:54explain how you'd win this in game now i don't want you to look so much at the moves itself
01:59but uh
02:00this this part here but look at the of the board think about how we can combine the king and
02:07the
02:07rook against the king and the pawn so first thing we want to do we want to get our king
02:12in play what's
02:13the worst piece on the board for black the king right we've got to combine the king and the rook
02:18otherwise this is going to be a draw because he's just going to move his king and pawn the pawn
02:22all the
02:22way up the board supported by the king and it's going to be over so king b4 alternatively
02:29black could play rook f1 but like i said king f6 now so he's going to play king f6 we're
02:36either going
02:36to get a draw because we're just going to go back and forth or we're going to position ourselves playing
02:40king e6 king pawn up king back and triangulate back to e7 pawn up and then eventually queen
02:52so king b4 is the way of forward now we have f6 as white of course wants to push the
03:00pawn forward to
03:01queen king c5 notice what black's been doing is planning to get his king closer to the pawn
03:06while at the right moment black will play his rook over to f1 he plays f7 now play rook f1
03:13okay
03:14this seems to kind of be an obvious move because the king cannot uh catch up with the pawn now
03:21you
03:21might say well what's wrong with just playing for example rook to d8 difference is that you'll be
03:28limited to where the rook can go versus f1 i can go to g1 h1 etc keep in mind that
03:34the whole king
03:35positioning here uh i mean rook positioning is you want to get the rook behind the pawn not onto the
03:41same
03:42rank okay also yes king b4 was a good move because with the right plane we want to get the
03:49king
03:51containing the forward now remember something when we make one move it's the purpose of making the
03:55second move so king c5 f7 rook f1 notice white now we'll play king to g6 why he wants to
04:05support the
04:05pawn of course now that we've done that we've stopped the pawn we want to pause for a moment and
04:11say okay what should box plan b well we want to follow through on our plan with the king so
04:18play king
04:18g6 get the king closer then he plays king g7 notice here he cannot play f8 because he becomes a
04:27queen
04:29you see that so if i play f8 what happens we'll just take that's game okay you'll just lose the
04:40queen
04:47okay that looks fairly obvious but i'm just giving you this insight that the fact that the rook is
04:54already on f1 and you need to understand that after king g6 and king d6 right you cannot play uh
05:05cannot promote the queen without it being uh lost king g7 is supported so what's black's play yes we
05:14want to continue with the king move and playing king de7 notice we cannot improve the rook positioning
05:20as to stop the pawn so we need to use our king with the rook to stop the pawn and
05:26after queen he just takes
05:29so you see the point here right guys so let's continue on now excuse me before we continue on guys
05:38um
05:41we do want to want to understand that
05:45we need to use the rook and the king together to stop the pawn not just the rook because that
05:50would
05:50be a draw okay also as some takeaway lessons from this end game we want to get our worst piece
06:00closest
06:01to the pawn because we want to use the working and the king to stop the pawn okay so we
06:08we brought our
06:09king into play okay for our king into play first okay and after f6 we continue with the king after
06:19he's
06:19already gone to that seventh rank that's when we move the rook we want to have the right timing behind
06:25this we do it at the last minute not do it first the difference is if we did the first
06:33we our king would
06:35be one square back and he would play king g6 king it might still be winning for black he would
06:41play king
06:41g6 king g7 so he already have king g7 and then i would have already played such as uh maybe
06:49yeah let's
06:51look at that actually i think right okay so let's say he plays rook f1 instead rook f1 f6
07:05can be kings b4 instead with the rook already here oh yeah and then he's already on g7
07:15so after c5 king being on c5 king yeah we'd have you'd be one move advanced
07:22right and then after f7 we play king d6 king g7 oh maybe we could stop with king e7 because
07:31after king
07:31g7 might this might still be this might actually still be winning let's double check it looks as
07:39if black is still winning oh no this is a draw rook f1 king f6 oh king f6 getting in
07:48front of
07:50okay the idea we get in front of the pawn is because we can no longer be checked and we
07:55can
07:55keep the other king away okay rook f1 king f6 king b4 so if i play rook f1 instead
08:12king f6 and getting in front of the pawn i'm going to play king b4 so we're basically one move
08:18and king e6 notice is keeping the king away um if we play rook e1 he'll just play king f6
08:26such as
08:27rook e1 king f6 king c5 king g7 now supporting the pawn king to d5 king uh oh okay king
08:42g6 now
08:48probably king f6 is is gonna play king e4 or even rook f1 followed by king e4 uh king g6
09:01now
09:02the rook check notice that's why you got in front of the pawn one of the reasons king f7 king
09:08e5 yes
09:10correct yeah f6 and then of course we have rook f1 yeah so this is still winning but um it
09:17takes much
09:17longer to win king e7 we take to rip obviously this is a simple just uh winning from here
09:27this takes much longer though so king b4 anyway makes more strategical sense the rook is going to
09:34get behind the pawn which is where it's supposed to be going to f1 right and then at the last
09:42moment
09:43when it gets the pawn over to f7 that's when we play with the meantime yes we have king b4
09:48notice we
09:49brought bringing the king over at the last minute moving the rook in there and then we just continue
09:55to move king in play that's all it was and of course at the end okay let's continue on to
10:03the next one here
10:08now with this one what we're looking at is we look at the ending position this is a draw for
10:14white
10:16so what i'm going to be doing here
10:22is i'm going to be putting
10:29so first one is if it's white to play here white will be up a tempo
10:36similar position except whites up the tempo f6 can be four rook f1 sorry f7 rook f1 force king g6
10:48king c5 notice here is just like before when we wasted the the other one was this white actually
10:58has a tempo which is basically like black being two moves behind first black needs to be ahead of
11:04move and then second of all why was ahead of move so after king g7 king g6 queen you take
11:12take and that's
11:14a simple draw what makes this a draw well why is this significant it's significant because white
11:22has that extra move versus if i already play king before i can stop him i can prevent him i
11:30can take
11:30with the rook right because i'm not i'm going to be in time to stop it right because what i
11:35need to do
11:36is actually get my king over to e7 so i have to count one two three four well he's only
11:43two
11:44right we have to support it with another four and then it's and then of course white goes first
11:48it's already going to become a queen before he goes to e7 so that's the difference right he
11:55trades it off but then of course this is a draw so both both are are trying to play for
12:02a win at this
12:03point but um the first both of them trying to play for a win but in reality it's a draw
12:10okay white's
12:12trying to promote the pawn to become a queen rook is the with the coordination of the king and the
12:17rook trying to stop the pawn so let's continue the next one and we look at the king position in
12:23this
12:24position we notice this is different because um of course the rook is in the back break instead of
12:31behind and our king is a little bit closer uh apparently get in with king c3 getting some
12:36opposition um so in some ways he's a little bit farther back in other ways he can get the opposition
12:44to move up now the other thing about this is rooks is actually worse placed behind in front of the
12:51pawn
12:52and that background than he is behind so when we look at this right black to play king d3 we
12:59want to
12:59get our king around to stop this pawn if you play king c3 he just pushes the pawn we have
13:05to go around
13:06this think of this pawn sort of like a blockade blockader it plays d6 now we play king e4 notice
13:15now white has to play d7 right king e5 king c6 right we gotta support the pawn right king e6
13:27now
13:28notice we've caught up to the pawn so guess what after king c7 we have king e7
13:36then when he queens of course we take so here's the key things we start with king d3 the idea
13:43is we
13:43want to get over to the seventh rank we want to go around then we follow with king e4 d7
13:51king e5
13:53good play so we're gonna we're gonna start with the with the plan of playing king d3 first
13:59then we just king e3 king e4 okay d7 so the idea is if he gets the opposition
14:06we're just gonna keep moving our king up we have one two three moves he has one two three and
14:12four
14:12moves so we can already be in position right after right before he plays king c7 d7 notice the king
14:23just
14:23moves up moves up he's gone around the flank and now he has the opposition you see king c6 king
14:29e6 you have
14:30the opposition going in going in going in so king c7 now technically if i had a rook on d1
14:36we get the
14:37same sort of thing where we stop him see the rook is not best placed in front of the pawn
14:43but behind it
14:44because in front of the pawn he can try to push it away behind it he can't okay so you
14:49see the difference
14:50there remember the important thing to remember from this ending is that we need to activate our
14:56king to get in front of the pawn you see and then when we play so we he plays d7
15:05instead of king c6 just
15:06to stop the check and also to be one move closer so he could play king to c6 now but
15:13there would be a
15:13check so when we look at the the analysis we look at multiple moves like we should be when we
15:19play chess
15:19you want to look at what would be the drawback to the or what would happen in the alternative move
15:25okay
15:28that's why d7 move but we just continue up with our king see and the king and the rook can
15:35already take
15:37so let's go on to our next one this one's a little bit more complex our king is way out
15:42of uh
15:43so the assignment of the work which is the black side so black king is on a1 rook's on b2
15:50those are way out of play but the rook can get at some point sort of behind him check check
15:56check
15:56forcing him out of the way then immediately come back and get behind the pawn
16:02so what we need to do is get the rook out of the way right
16:08if we can cut off the king means we're not going to be able to support the pawn also by
16:15moving the rook out of the way our king can come into play so alternatively yes we could play rook
16:20b1
16:22but here's the thing is yes we want to play over to h1 king's going to be able to come
16:28up to support
16:29the pawn this is the problem alternatively instead of king f4 he can play h5 but then of course we
16:34get
16:34the position we want after rook to b4 notice the king is cut off so we can do is say
16:40okay he's going
16:41to go all the way up to h7 and we just come to b8 and say okay not a problem
16:45he lose the pawn so the
16:47rook b4 is actually a nice move because we want to cut off that king so we cannot support the
16:54pawn
16:55rook b1 king f4 here is where rook b1 is a mistake why because we're letting the king come out
17:02to support
17:02the pawn so after king to b2 coming closer h5 king c3 h6 king d4 okay black has improved this
17:13king
17:13position but look where the pawn is now on h6 so after king f5 coming closer to the pawn king
17:20d5 h7 rook h1
17:24king g6 notice white has come up to support the pawn but black now can shoulder the king and get
17:32the opposition king e6
17:38right king e6 king g7 right but now it's what happens after king g7
17:49he can support the queen of the pawn from cleaning and there's no maid or any other combination where
17:55he checks them the king moves and then we win the queen so this is king g7 simply just
18:02drawn position because he's going to have to trade off the rook for the queen right that pawn can queen
18:08with supporting the king so the best you can do is try to trade off the rook for the uh
18:13for the queen once the
18:14pawn promotes the queen or keep checking the king so but instead we have to see the idea here we
18:21want
18:22to put off the king that's why first move is work before okay white then continues with pushing the pawn
18:31so you have rook b4 h5 push the pawn right we don't have any other decent move because our king
18:38is cut off
18:38right king b2 now we want to move our king in play now that we've cut off the pawn we
18:45don't we're not
18:46so concerned about it promoting because once it gets to h7 we just play with b8 right so then what
18:53we
18:53want to do bring our king in play this is how to play h6 now we can play at this
18:58point i think you can play
19:00king c3 as an option um this is a this is a tricky position because actually this pawn's not getting
19:13anywhere what you want to do is say okay i want to bring my king closer with king c3 of
19:18the distant
19:19opposition because i have an odd number in between and then i say you know what i'm kind of coming
19:24i'm
19:24coming closer right when i play king c3 king e4 and then once and then what we do is come
19:32closer but
19:32at some point of course i can either play h7 but the the problem is we want to we have
19:39actually no
19:39excuse me we have to go around don't we but if we go around it's going to take longer yeah
19:45this is
19:45difficult um maybe it doesn't maybe king c3 normally you want to use her because this pawn he's not going
19:54to
19:54be able to support the pawn but the thing is i can't actually push him away right once i play
20:02h7
20:04he he will what he'll do is he'll play rook b8 and then the king will come up but he
20:09can't support the
20:09king anyway so the thing is actually going to win the pawn anyway but rook b6 pretty much still doesn't
20:17matter because i'm going to win the pawn next so after h7 we play rook h6 and black will win
20:27okay so you see that right keepings remember you want to cut off the king because we don't want the
20:34king to support the pawn then once he pushes the pawn that's when we move our king and put
20:40it and after h6 here's another thing remember we want to keep we want to get we want to attack
20:48the
20:49pawn so it's forced to move so the king uh so we have to set up a situation where the
20:54king has no viable
20:56move moving forward because he'll lose the pawn so we played rook b6 who basically said okay he doesn't
21:03have time like his king is not on g4 so he can't go to g5 his only viable move is
21:08to move the pawn and
21:09that's where we're going to stop over the work h6 once because we have a threat on the the pawn
21:16and he
21:16can't it's not already defended by his king and he can't move to a square where it can be defended
21:22on
21:22the next square such as the king is on h4 or f4 g4 h4 right on this square we can't
21:31support the pawn
21:33so that after h7 you just get in position to win the pawn so if the queen we take
21:38or the king moves up of course we take the pawn and of course this is sweet okay so you
21:45see that right
21:48let's see what we have okay we have one more
21:56okay i'm going to stop here guys this will be for another time
22:04yeah because what what happens is white this is a drawing things with white so next time we're going
22:10to talk about how white can draw it um draw with this position so how white can draw it um
22:20of course
22:21he can't win because the rook can always trade off for the pawn when it when it promotes right but
22:27white
22:28wants to do seeing that that's not possible for when he wants to draw the position that's what i'm
22:32going to talk about tomorrow if that is if i'm available tomorrow i'm going to make do my best to
22:39continue with the work ending what i'm going to do when i do these series i'm going to do consecutive
22:44days where we can have a follow-up and strategy where we talk about okay we're playing working pawns we
22:51look at the positions in which we're winning and also positions are strong okay so we do them pairs
22:57just like an end game what i'm going to do is i'm going to have a couple in between we're
23:01talking about
23:01in game positions and of course i'll just have one for openings okay so with that said
23:12what i'm going to do guys i'm going to go back to my original position here
23:18i'm going to i'm going to post these on instagram now what i would like you guys to do is
23:23i'd like
23:24you to subscribe to my instagram because i'll have the puzzles for you to go through and this is a
23:30way
23:30that you can interact with me and post any questions you have any suggestions or any other related content
23:38to this lesson and which also you can practice what you've learned from this lesson as well so
23:45i know this was uh shorter but the important thing is we're aiming for quality over quantity okay so
23:54what we want to do is at this point is i'm going to post those on on all the critical
24:02positions for
24:03uh for each pop for each uh you know end game right so each major end game position all the
24:13moves in
24:14between okay so from the starting end game position and then all the critical positions in between okay so
24:23think of this is the first diagram and all the all the critical positions after it okay i'm going to
24:31have
24:31there you can practice uh solving the puzzle okay what i want you first to understand is is the most
24:38the
24:38reason behind it and the strategy and then then after that understand like okay what is the strategy on
24:45on how we're going to approach to to win this position okay what's the position in other words where
24:52should the pieces end up okay then how do we get to that position okay then after that what we
24:58want
24:58to do is work on the analysis how do we get to that position okay then what we want to
25:06do is
25:06precisely look at one or more usually you want to look at multiple ideas so like for example rook f1
25:14right or king b4 okay so that's what it is
25:23so yes i'd like you to go to my instagram so this is world chess coach on youtube also world
25:30chess coach
25:30on rumble and on uh it's going to be global product and gaming review on dailymotion all right
25:41and um hopefully this video will upload on to youtube as in the video will be available if not i
25:48will give you
25:48the links so with that said guys i would like to thank all the people watching this live on facebook
25:54i do appreciate it this allows me to produce more of the content and to offer maximum value especially
26:00for tournament players or improving players all of us are on different levels all of us are improving
26:05technically technically all of us are improving players or at least should be because we should always
26:10be improving our game the only question is can we use what we learned in our games it's always in
26:17that
26:18capacity okay so um for all the people watching this live and the recorded version here on facebook
26:25what i'd like you to do is i'd like you to please click the thumbs up on the video that
26:31way you'll be
26:31pushing the facebook algorithm and more people will be able to view it and enjoy it
26:45that is the more it's viewed the more the algorithm will suggest it because
26:53it thinks that people would be interested in it if you haven't already please click the subscribe button
26:59that way i'll access to all the content on my channel as i do have a variety of content on
27:06this
27:06channel for you to view and enjoy so it's everything from my uh instructive games my games and also
27:14phases of the game so in game is a big thing you want to study because you can have a
27:20study position
27:21where it's equal and then if you trade off some positions what do you do next okay each phase of
27:27the
27:27game matters but leaving one of the phases out it can be fatal in terms of losing the game that
27:33is
27:35because if your opponent plays you evenly what do you do in the end game now the good thing about
27:40end game guys is that actually this is the easiest phase to learn because the theory doesn't change
27:48opening theory changes a lot middle game is hardest to master because there's so many positions to learn
27:54and it also requires a lot of analytical ability okay so there's visualization with analytical ability
28:01and there's actually the actual analysis and then of course there is a technique that's learned and
28:07practiced like anything else so anyway end game is going to be the easiest thing you just need to know
28:15the basic positions like the setups basic positions and then how to get to that position and you've pretty much
28:22learned one thing you don't want to do though you you want to still keep with your analytical approach
28:28of looking at more than one option this and then being able to compare because if you only look at
28:33one
28:33option how do you know it's the right option keep that in mind it's a very important idea that all
28:38levels
28:38should be using and definitely using at the higher levels as well
28:44all right and also if you haven't already please click the the bell button that way you'll be notified
28:51of all my future videos that way when a new video of mine comes out you won't miss it because
28:55you'll be
28:56notified accordingly what you do ask is that when you click on the bell button click on instant because if
29:03you click on the other options what will happen is it will take longer to actually get to that situation
29:11as in
29:13get to where you can actually see on the new video right and the advantage of using the bell button
29:20is that actually you don't have to go to the subscriptions page you can be on your main page
29:23which you would be by default right and then you can just click on the bell and you can see
29:28all your
29:29notifications and just click on it directly so keep that in mind so i'd like to um i'd like to
29:37wish all of
29:37you a great evening afternoon or morning wherever you are in the world well what i ask is take take
29:45what you've learned from this end game and apply it to your games and see how many more games you're
29:49gonna you're gonna either win or draw depending on what the situation is okay what you want to do is
29:56learn from these situ of these uh end games apply the principles and apply the techniques and you'll find
30:02that you will have uh improve your game that much incrementally more always be patient with yourself
30:09not don't expect perfection but what you should expect out of yourself is effort and improvement
30:15each time all right remember don't rush through things but also uh use the common sense aspects like
30:22okay if something's far closer to cleaning what do we need to do right if our pieces are on uh
30:28on the
30:29opposite side of the board if our king's on the opposite side of the board what do we do okay
30:33so
30:33there's a little bit of common sense involved but at the same time we want to use technique and
30:38understand the strategy is like as in where should our pieces be placed and then how should we get there
30:44and of course also don't forget just like you would play in a normal game in the opening or middle
30:49game as we also want to look at more than one option okay so we want to be able to
30:55look at one more
30:55option and analyze it out until we come to a conclusion because we're not going to be able to
31:01play out the whole game in our head in one and uh in one at one move like as in
31:08and the time you would
31:10take to make one move right so keep that in mind for practical purposes there is a time control and
31:18also
31:19i don't think it's fun to have to analyze everything out of course people are not able to do that
31:24anyway but
31:25just the idea is you want to analyze it out until you come to conclusion and then you want to
31:30look
31:30at multiple options and say okay which one is the best and then they say okay and then what we
31:36want
31:36to do is when we come up with the right move when we want to follow it up with this
31:40in and with the same
31:41correct plan as then we move one for example move the king to b4 right because why we wouldn't because
31:50we want to get to c5 right it sounds fairly simple but we wanted the larger point is we want
31:57to follow
31:58through on whatever we're doing if we don't follow through then our plans are just going to be disjointed
32:04and it won't work so and then of course pay attention to timing if you're going to incorporate
32:10all these integrate all these things into your chess games you will play better and you will have more
32:16successful results just focus on the process and not so much to read the result because as you're
32:23playing better chess you will just organically actually have better results so that's what it is
32:30so i'd like to wish you a great day wherever you are in the world guys take care be healthy
32:36and then i'll talk to you next time good luck in your games bye for now
