June Chess Series- Basic Chess for Tournament Players!
Endgame Play: Queen vs. Pawn Technique!-
Transcript
00:09good afternoon good evening or good morning depending on where you are in the world
00:13what i'd like to do is start with our june series on the in-game i'm going to keep going
00:19through
00:22uh the 100 in-games you should know by jesus jesus de la vila now uh all the credit to
00:30to his work uh
00:32although it is standard uh things uh standard chess positions uh i'm going to use my own or
00:40it's going to be different than his book i'm going to be using my own explanations but just know that
00:44i got the positions from his book okay just as a full disclosure now what we're going to be talking
00:53about today and before i talk about uh go over the queen and uh versus pawn positions i'd like to
01:01first thank all the people watching this live on facebook i do appreciate that this uh encourages
01:07me to have more broadcasts to help uh uh with the you know uh beginners and uh tournament players
01:16improve their chess and it does encourage me to create more content for that so what i'm going to
01:22have is a rotating content where i'm going to do in-game middle game openings so i'm going to have
01:29i'm going to have a variety of those okay so i'm going to have let's say one uh let's say
01:34i'm going
01:35to have like two videos on the end game right i'm going to have uh let's say i'm going to
01:42alternate
01:42it right so i'm going to have like one video on end game and like for example uh let's say
01:48we'll have
01:48like uh two like one the rotation would be like one in one video on the end game two video
01:55games uh
01:55excuse me two videos on the middle game and then go back to the end game right and then the
02:03last one
02:03will be the openings okay so i will alternate like that uh i would like to do as many uh
02:11of my of the
02:13end game as middle game simply because i'm going through this whole series and it's the end game is
02:19actually the easiest thing to learn um for basic opening theory but i mean not even theory basic opening
02:26principles it may have some theory but it's that's pretty easy to however uh the theory doesn't the
02:34thing that's overall easier about end game is the theory doesn't change so that's the difference now
02:40what we're going to talk about today is how to win with a queen against the pawn i've got a
02:43few examples
02:45now what we're going to do is we're going to talk about okay how the queen can stop the
02:49pawn from promoting you notice that the pawn because the coordinates are one through eight it's uh the
02:55king is on uh c7 and the pawn is on b7 our queen is on e3 and and our king
03:02is on b1 our objective is
03:04to stop the queen uh the pawn from promoting or if the pawn promotes i give check to the king
03:11and then i win the pawn uh the queen it's one of the two okay and of course after that
03:16of course it's a
03:17simple uh checkmating technique so this is just technique first what you want to do is uh force
03:25the king away now you understand that if you play if i were to play like for example queen b3
03:30you see
03:31here right he's going to promote anyway that's a draw and so we can play queen a7 right so what
03:41we
03:41want to do when we're on the side that has the queen versus the pawn we want to look at
03:45more than one
03:45option so according to him queen c5 is the best move let's look at queen a7 and the point isn't
03:52just like okay this is the best movie it's the thinking behind it to analyze okay so we want to
03:59look at principles we want to look at strategy but also we want to look at our analysis technique
04:04so i'm going to open this i'm going to say queen a7 first okay queen a7 now this this is
04:12this will win
04:14uh after queen a7 the king will come up and then we have to go back to the same thing
04:19again the queen
04:20c5 check so you see this is a wasted move playing queen a7 essentially why because he just moves the
04:28pawn back okay so we're just going to say this is a wasted move
04:37now sometimes it's a good thing to waste the move to get to the position you want
04:42but in uh situations where the next move he's going to queen you have to be more efficient so
04:50so we have queen a7 king c8
04:54back to queen c5 who's just wastes a move more efficient is to play queen c5 notice it's one move
05:01faster so if the queen c5 notice he can't play king c8 now he can play king to b8 however
05:09the
05:10problem with that is now he'll he's stopping his pawn from promoting and that will give me time to
05:16bring my king out what we want to do is coordinate our queen and a king against the pawn so
05:21then of
05:21course he'll move out of the way then what we do is we say okay we can give check on
05:28a3 or a5 if we go
05:31if we go to c6 now he's going to play king b8 or king c a7 so let's say king
05:42a7 makes more sense from
05:44objective point of view queen c7 okay but then he queen uh sorry he doesn't queen excuse me then he
05:50just comes back and we're gonna and we're gonna then we're gonna be we have to go back to a5
05:56anyway so
05:57basically this idea of playing uh so after king b8 right so after queen c7 he can play king b8
06:05king
06:06c2 queen a8 queen c6 is a waste of a move why because we can just immediately get to the
06:13position
06:13after queen a5 anyway so this is a wasted move not excuse me king a8 it's fine but queen c6
06:20is a
06:21wasted move the idea is we want to get to the position faster not longer we want to get there
06:28quicker not later okay now what we want to do of course is continue one we can play a5 or
06:38a3
06:39let's say we play uh let's say we play a3 simpler right and then he has to come back
06:47when the king has skin in the front front of the pawn that's when we move our king up king
06:52moves over we
06:53do the same thing again we give to check notice it's like a dance right if he goes to these
06:59if
06:59he goes to for example b8 now we're gonna move our king up it's the same pattern king a8 queen
07:07c6 now
07:09the reason why it works now and not before is because f after king a7 right um
07:20we can play queen c5 there's also this idea of king a5 so we look at the check check or
07:27if i play
07:28queen c7 i'm wasting a movie then i go back to a8 there's no progress being made there so after
07:35king
07:35a5 if he becomes if this becomes a queen then we've got mate okay notice the king is coming up
07:45to support
07:46queen and also gets getting closer to the pawn so he can't play king a7 excuse me he can't queen
07:55because it's me it's uh he's gonna get made okay you have to pay attention to the king the king
08:02and
08:02the queen coordination against the lone king okay so here of course after king a5 he can he can promote
08:10to a knight wait i don't want to promote to how do i do that
08:19board should we not always promote to
08:25board should we not always do that okay
08:40okay
08:41i don't know
08:42i don't know
08:44i don't know
08:58let's see
09:07let's see
09:26let's do this because i'm not seeing it yet
09:33program options
09:36promote to okay always promote to a queen yeah we don't want to do that let's change it up
09:43let's say it promotes to a knight at this point
09:47right we're hitting the queen right stops the mate that's the only move we're going to play queen c3
09:52we're going to play queen c7 anyway so his only move now is king a8
09:59then what we're going to do is just move our king closer because we're threatening mate now
10:04and then what does he have if he plays knight d7 we're going to uh
10:09okay let's check we play we can't play queen d7 right oh yeah we can play king d7 king b8
10:15and then we
10:16simply have the mate on uh b7 okay so his thing is his only really decent move now of course
10:25i showed you if
10:26king b8 if he plays king b8 if he plays king b8 right so after queen c5 he can play
10:33king d and the other
10:34option is king b8 doesn't work because you white will uh black gains a tempo to move his king up
10:40okay
10:43so after queen c5 his only other option is to play king d8 problem with king d8 now is the
10:49pawn the king
10:50is cut off from the pawn so then we simply just move up with d6 giving check now it does
10:56let him come
10:57back over to c8 but what i have at this point is queen c6 check now he has to go
11:05to b8 because if not
11:06i take the pawn so king b8 is forced and then because he's in front of the pawn we have
11:12tempo to move the
11:13king up king moves out of the way right i go queen c7 to pin it notice he can't promote
11:21because it'd be
11:21check he plays king e8 then we do the same thing again we can play queen a5 check king has
11:29to go to
11:29to uh b1 and then we go to c3 okay notice we're we're making a move to force him in
11:38front of the pawn
11:39so we can move our king up then he plays king c8 so it's basically there's a there's a pattern
11:45to this
11:45well king c7 he goes to d7 again now we go to b6 right we stop the pawn from advancing
11:53okay so this
11:55is a major junction here is we're going to play queen b6 because it stops him from queening
12:03otherwise if i play uh any other move it's he's going to just repeat the same pattern so we play
12:09queen b6 right and then his what does he have left king king c8 okay we have the check now
12:17so if he
12:19goes now he's forced after queen of c6 if he goes to d8 of course right i just take the
12:26pawn okay he
12:27can't play d8 d8's gonna lose well it's in a losing position he's in a losing position either way but
12:33after king b8 king before we can come closer to the pawn king a7 and king a uh yeah king
12:43a5 with
12:43the idea of mating on on a on a6 so it's the same thing again he's gonna promote to a
12:51knight
12:52and here we're gonna because we don't have the mate on a6 we can we need to give check so
12:58you
12:59we give check on c7 his only move now is to go to a8 the same thing as before b6
13:06knight d7 that's
13:07to put check king over uh queen takes knight right it can be a and then queen b7 you see
13:14there's a
13:15pattern just a recurring pattern so in sunny place king d7 now you now that you see the pattern it
13:24it should be self-explanatory once you've already seen it you see okay this is the position i'm aiming
13:29for and so this is what we're going to be going for so here queen b6 why because we stopped
13:35the pawn
13:35from queening and so yes you can go to c8 uh sorry queen c6 check king b8 same same as
13:43our analysis now
13:44here's the important thing after king b8 we want to move our king up okay we want we wanted to
13:51gain the
13:52tempo got to bring our king in to mate and also because we're not going to be able to win
13:56the
13:56pawn without the king anyway so king b2 okay this is a good move king a7 queen c7 notice again
14:09he cannot
14:10play b8 he cannot promote the queen uh the pawn to a queen because he'd be in check right because
14:16you're one i'm essentially pinning the pawn down so what we're going to do is uh so after queen c7
14:25is
14:25only he can play king a6 so king a8 is going to be we're going to play king a8 and
14:32uh queen a5 check
14:34king b8 and then we move the king up okay so the other option they can do is king a6
14:40so you want to
14:40look at okay does he if he plays a8 what do i do and if he plays a6 what do
14:44i do in this case where we've
14:46already stopped the pawn from queening what we're going to do is move our king up remember we want to
14:50gain a move to move the king up he's going to go up to a7 notice he can't still cannot
14:55move that up
14:56uh so we have to keep the pawn pinned right we're going to move our king up to b4 go
15:01to a8
15:03and then queen c6 now pinning the pawn so again we only have he only has two options b8 or
15:11a7
15:12a7 is a better move so he can prepare the queen on next move then we remember you play a5
15:17so if he
15:18queens it's the same pattern again remember if he queens on b8 right you have queen a6 mate you see
15:27so i'm just going to show you for example right i have the queen a6 mate so you can't promote
15:32to a
15:33queen and remember before when he promotes to a knight right if he promotes to a knight
15:43which is the best move because it stops the queen from going to a6 we're still we're in this case
15:50we've got queen a7 uh queen c7 excuse me and then after king beat king a8 we have king to
15:56b6 we're
15:57getting we want to threaten to go notice we can't go to a6 because of the knight so we want
16:02to go to b6 to
16:03threaten mate on b7 and it's the same thing again we give check to stop the mate we take same
16:09thing
16:09so we're seeing a pattern over and over and over right so here
16:16instead of going to a6 this best move is to go to a8 so you want to calculate both okay
16:21your main thing of course in this position is you want to stop the pawn from queening
16:27i'm going to turn the analysis off by the way don't rely on the analysis engine just use it only
16:32just to come do your own analysis and compare it to what the engine says and then see what the
16:37difference is so in this case you place king a8 i play go back with the check king goes in
16:44front
16:44then we move our king up notice that he with the king being in front of the pawn the pawn
16:50can't
16:51promote right so we move our king up we have to be able to alternate between moving the queen and
16:56the
16:56king so king b3 king c8 and again queen c5 check now after queen c5 check the same pattern applies
17:06notice that again white white has only only only has two two moves either d7 or b8 now after d7
17:16we notice we started with the same we went with the same thing queen b6 he goes to c8 okay
17:23queen c6
17:24king b8 king b4 notice whenever he gets in front of the pawn we move our king up closer to
17:30the pawn
17:31close to the pawn king a7 queen c7 okay the same thing again remember i showed you oops
17:40we have kings uh queen c7 right king a8 queen a5 check king b8 king b5 so once he gets
17:49in front of the
17:49pawn we move our our king forward king c8 the same thing but in this case
18:00after king to c6 and he plays b8 queen right we're going to play queen f5 check
18:10why is that well because he can't give mate on c on c7 but we what you want to do
18:17is give mate on d7
18:18so what we do is we cut off the king from going to b7 or of course also we cut
18:24off the b7 square and
18:25also of course c7 and uh d7 what we want to do is push the king away from the queen
18:32by playing queen
18:33f5 and to mate on on d7 so after king d7 uh king d8 we have we have actually we
18:40also have queen d7 mate
18:41too as well that's an also another option so in this case he can mate on f8 it's another way
18:51well the good thing is even if the king were to escape he could take the queen
18:56so this is sort of in a way better but both mates so it's good enough so instead of queen
19:03instead of
19:04uh instead of me playing queen c7 i can also play king a5 now remember queen a5 if he promotes
19:11to a
19:11queen i get made so best the best thing for me actually is to play king a5 we want to
19:18get the
19:19threat in the mate on a6 we notice that him making uh promoting to a queen is a blunder because
19:26he gets
19:26made on the next move so let's talk about the technique again here let's before when we when we
19:33look at an end game we have to look at the features of it okay we're going to talk about
19:37some main takeaways
19:38from this particular example we want to look at the features of the position well i have the queen
19:44he has the pawn okay then the second question is what's the material first question is what's the
19:49material like second position is where's the positioning of the pawn versus the queen well
19:54the pawn's over on the seventh rank okay in this case where i'm playing black and he's playing white
19:59or you can just slip or swap it around uh whether it's white or black doesn't matter it's the same
20:05principle the the pawn is all the way on the other side of the board on the seventh rank right
20:11and
20:13he's threatening the queen so we we have to look at what's the material imbalance what's the position
20:18imbalance the position imbalance now is that he's threatening to queen on the next move secondly what
20:24we need to do is we have to understand we have to consider how we can push away the king
20:29so either he
20:30goes away from the pawn to d7 or gets in front of the pawn then once he gets in front
20:36of the pawn
20:36remember we were going to move our king up once he plays the king for example the d7 remember we're
20:42going to go and stop the pawn with queen b6 and so basically what's going to happen is we're going
20:48to
20:48we're going to force him in front of b8 right if if he if he goes to b8 right we're
20:55going to move
20:56king up if he goes around away from it we'll play b6 and we'll just continue to check go there
21:02check
21:02go there it's the same pattern over and over and over okay so keep that in mind
21:08all right let's talk about the next position here
21:16okay here's a quick one right so we have queen notice that after queen f5 doesn't work because queen
21:23right so what happens here well here black has squandered the opportunity to do anything well he
21:32couldn't do anything why he couldn't stop the queen right so because how are you going to stop the queen
21:41you can't stop you can't you can't give check to the king in a way that would prevent him from
21:47having
21:47the time to queen it and also you can't get the queen in uh in the position like in the
21:52where uh
21:53you stop him for queenie but even then even if you have the queen can go over on the d
21:58file right
21:59you can still push the pawn so you see that's the contrast in positions here let's go to the next
22:05one
22:07this is that's the positioning aspect now if we look at this one here we notice here the difference
22:13is that the king is cut off to support the pawn so he has to go to g8 if he
22:17wants to do anything
22:19so therefore he goes to g8 to support the pawn now here we want to give the check now we
22:24have different
22:25ideas for checks right we can play the check on g4 then he just goes to g8 right so you
22:35he you have to
22:36worry about a stalemating idea after queen g4 he plays for example uh king to h8 right the other
22:44option is we can play for example queen d5 but he still goes to h8 so what we want to
22:50do is take
22:51away that square where you can uh actually retreat to and as he actually goes to d8 with check then
22:58king
22:58g7 then queen g5 check then king over notice we gave the check first he moved up then i gave
23:08check
23:08now i can give check now why because after well he has some moves so let's say for example here
23:17let's say it's white to play here which it is let's say it goes to h8 now what happens
23:25well let's see um if i go to f6 right let's check where's he going
23:35okay well let's see let's look at this h8 if i go f f6 he goes to g8 right we
23:43don't have time to move
23:44the king up okay so therefore where would we go we can go to g6 now with check and then
23:49goes back to h8
23:52so this is not so simple right but it's going to be a stalemate if i i can come back
24:00here
24:01do the same thing again check and go here and this doesn't seem to be sufficient
24:09let's double check this because the thing is can always retreat to h8 yeah it's a dead draw
24:17queen e7 h8 you see the principle of it but if he goes to h8 now it's f8 so you
24:23don't want to go there
24:24now because we have to look at where's that last where he wants to go to so let's say he
24:31goes you
24:31can just go back to g8 notice we're wasting a move to get to the square we want to go
24:36to in the first
24:36place which is the point and after d8 check g7 and this is just a simple back and forth check
24:46notice because the king is way on the other side of the board he can't get into position to stop
24:51the
24:51pawn and that's the point here queen d4 even queen d4 same ideas before i was showing you king g8
24:58and
24:58that's a draw you're just going to go back and forth to the same square notice when you give check
25:06over on uh e8 and went over right instead of going to h8 right let's say right let's say we
25:14have for
25:16example check on h uh the check right so we go back right here we gave check right on e8
25:23if he goes
25:24to g7 then we give the check notice that you want this as a defender you want to stop him
25:30from getting
25:31to that square on f8 okay so obviously you can't go there right now but what you can do is
25:38just simply
25:38go to g8 so a each check he just goes up and over just like the triangle triangulation so you
25:45can see
25:45that as well so with that said when we look at the original position here
25:51he wants to support the pawns he plays king g8 queen d8 check king g7 queen g5 check
25:58now we have to be careful about this because we're cutting off the king so his he has options to
26:04play
26:04king h8 but king h8 ultimately going to lose because why queen f6 king g8 queen g6 king h8
26:12right queen e8 i'm going to go go up and kind of like a zigzag right e8 king g7 queen
26:20e7
26:23right king g8 but queen d8 check king uh king g7 queen d4 so king g8 now is a draw
26:32so we notice that after king h8 there's possibilities for this right king h8 we can play queen f6 now
26:41but
26:41queen f6 doesn't work we notice after queen f6 this is he can draw this let's say king f7 when
26:49we look at
26:50both options queen h6 king g8 queen g6 king h8 notice he can't go to f8 for tomato so
27:00yes i can but the problem is after king d2 we have a stalemate okay
27:09um okay notice the king has nowhere to go without getting in check and no other pieces can move
27:18besides that therefore it's a stalemate okay so let's continue on let's go to the next position here
27:30and what i'm doing here is
27:34we have the same type of thing except our king is in this position if you compare the position
27:40from before where the king was all the way on c1 versus on e5 it becomes obvious that the king
27:46is much further advanced and you will be able to get into position now as we look at the ending
27:52position we say okay this is the position we'd like to end up with the idea is we want to
27:57work backwards
27:59so we say okay we want to checkmate him on the back rank our idea with the king is to
28:05cut off the
28:05squares so we if we look work backwards see check go back go back go back see how if you
28:13go backwards
28:14right we can see well we start from the end to see what our goal is and then how do
28:18we get to there
28:19so first thing we want to do is cut off the king he's either going to go over to to
28:25h6
28:28g6 or to the background we have to make them decide on which side right on the sixth rank or
28:34the eighth
28:34rank which where he's going to go so king d7 goes goes to g6 now alternatively can go to g8
28:40so what we
28:41need to do is consider okay if he goes there we're going to move our king into play now if
28:46king h8 what do
28:47we do right well if king h8 i just simply may but here's a problem after king of six
29:00can he not queen we have to make sure not to be too yeah he can queen on the next
29:08move instead
29:13which is is uh better than what he had before but it's still losing uh let's see then we play
29:24king
29:24g6 now notice he can't check on h7 or g7 so then where does he go queen h6 loses the
29:35you're gonna lose the
29:36queen if you go anywhere else um there really isn't any good options here let's say even e5
29:45right what do we have well it stops the mate on h on e8 but it doesn't stop the mate
29:51on uh well we have made it too right we can play f7 if i play the mate so we
29:57have main ideas f7 right
30:00king goes over and yeah we can play them on each second or there's another way and i'm not even
30:11seeing it and just you don't have to look at the analysis but you can see as proof that you
30:15can also
30:16give check on the back rank notice the king cannot go to any of the squares in front of the
30:20black king
30:22then his only move of course is to block it and they're going to get made so either way it's
30:26made
30:26in two so believe it or not king h uh h8 doesn't work okay notice that when you look at
30:38the ending
30:39position it ended in five moves versus the game was versus this game example or whatever is six moves
30:46so h8 believe it or not doesn't work
30:52and it's fascinating where even after the check king g6
30:59right there's no good move for white what do you have even king f8 now
31:07right well then he gets made it on the h on f7 so there's no good move here so alternatively
31:15just
31:15place king g6 we know on g8 the king is going to move up so he figures okay i'm going
31:22to play g6 instead
31:24to stop him from going into f5 or e5 or f6 but then we just kick him off with e6
31:31the idea is push
31:32away the king so our king can advance so after queen e6 check he has two options king g5 or
31:40king g7
31:41at king g5 i have queen f6 check king h5 and queen h8 now we have to be careful to
31:50make sure to give
31:51the king a square okay but what we want to do is blockade in this case you play queen h8
31:59it's kind of
31:59the safer move because what do we have here he can play uh well he can play king g6 for
32:05one
32:07you know to hold on to the pawn right then we play the simple queen f6 check we're going to
32:14kick the
32:14king away from it now he goes back to h5 right knows he can't promote the pawn because the king
32:21would
32:21take then we get our king over to get the opposition okay so we're threatening if he queens now
32:29we have we have mate in two okay we have queen g6 check and queen g4 mate
32:39so yeah oh excuse me excuse me even better if queens excuse me queens you just can actually take so
32:46that's
32:46one check made in one instead of two but yeah even if i couldn't take i still had g6 and
32:50g4
32:53okay so king f5 uh anything else he has no other squares to go to and this is simply just
33:03straight
33:03out after king f5 straight out winning white's gonna mate and uh two moves or so this case actually
33:12well in this case one move you can just put black check meets and another black mate meets on the
33:20next
33:21move or check meets
33:29okay so we see that right what we did was he cut off the king and then stopped the pawn
33:34from advancing
33:35but let's say instead of going to g5 he goes to g7 he wants to get next to the pawn
33:41so he can put into
33:42it uh advance for a queen right let's close this queen e7 check we need to give the king
33:50you give check to the king because otherwise he just queens next move right so he can play king g6
33:56or
33:56king g8 let's say he can't place king g6 we get queen f8 now notice he can't queen you can't
34:04play king
34:04g7 so he's cut off the other idea is king g8 now after king g8 we have queen f6 i'm
34:12sorry king f6
34:13you can queen but then we have the same idea king g6 queen d4 like i was showing you and
34:21queen e8
34:22you can just look at really you can just look at the basics of the position and say okay
34:28my goal is to check to advance the king to cut off the king and then check mate on the
34:33back right
34:35so you notice he had no good move and thought well we want to stop him from mating over on
34:41d8 but in
34:42this case gave up the square over on e8 so you see with this example when we look at the
34:50positioning
34:51we notice the king here's the important distinction king was much better placed on e5 than he was on c1
34:59also the king can also uh king sorry the queen can actually give check right to force the king
35:06either to the back rank or out so after queen d7 you see that force them either to g6 or
35:12back to the
35:13back rank and that's that's the distinction okay we went to g6 remember we just checked him again
35:21he went up and then we give him check a second time same thing king g8 notice king
35:27but the difference here was when he went to g6 we could just play queen f8 so he's completely cut
35:33off now after king g8 king f6 the queen king goes to g6 you see there's no good move for
35:43white so you
35:45see that let's go to our next next example here now this is different when we look at the positioning
35:51here because the queen and the king are way on the other opposite side of the board and our king
35:56is
35:57not very well positioned on b3 but the the queen can get into a play easily with queen g7
36:04but white what white wants to do see he wants to support the pawn so if we look at the
36:10ending
36:11position he'd like to get to h8 right if he can't hold on to the pawn indefinitely he wants to
36:19go to
36:19the corner where it's still mate so we have king e7 to support the pawn right threatens the queen
36:28so that or you can look at uh we we have to look at queening well is it possible to
36:34queen on the next
36:35move no because we have the skewer we give the queen a3 check king moves it also can't go to
36:41e7 so
36:44so let's say it goes to d7 we take the queen so let's say a king e7 right the idea
36:51is you want to
36:51get the king next to the pawn to the pawn can you can support the pawn push to queen so
36:57king e7 queen e5
36:59check king d7 queen f6 king e8 notice we don't have the time to bring the king up queen e6
37:13check king f8 this in
37:16this case we can play king to c4
37:21king to g7 queen e7
37:29here white's going to come back to support the pawn notice that the pawn is uh actually
37:33pinned so after king g8 right we don't have the time to move the king in again because
37:41he's going to promote on the next move so we have to give check to the king
37:45well if we give check on the back rank first you'll block and that's a draw so the only viable
37:52move is queen g5 check and after king h7 notice i didn't say king f8 because after king f8 what
38:02happens
38:03well we have time to move the king into position right so after king what do we have king d
38:11uh sorry
38:12king d5 notice he doesn't have king g8 so he has king e8 now and we then we continue with
38:20a similar
38:20pattern okay so we can go to g6 now where is he going to go well he only he's only
38:29the viable option
38:30as e7 because if he goes to g8 i'm sorry to f8 excuse me then we go again to e4
38:41or sorry to e6 and then we're threatening mate on the next move so if he goes well threatening mate
38:48in
38:48two sorry because he can't go to g8 so he goes for example e8 we give check he goes d8
38:54and we give
38:55eight so what i would do is when you're doing this here's a pro tip is when you're doing the
39:01analysis
39:01check what you think is correct and then go check it with the engine so if you go back with
39:06the engine
39:07and see if there's any errors i understand with this book there are occasional errors but i don't i don't
39:14think probably queen and pawn there's probably not any errors rook and pawn is the most complex that's
39:21probably there might be some errors here and there but anyway let's continue on king e8 queen g6 now
39:29notice he went uh so instead of h7 right if he goes to g uh f8 he's blocking the pawn
39:36and this gains black
39:38uh attempt to move the king up this is the point i would just put here white has the time
39:45to move the
39:45king uh black has the time to move the king up
39:51time to move the king up
39:55okay
40:00okay so that's the difference king d5 you see the move the king moving up the queen
40:07right putting the pawn and e7 right otherwise if f8 we just move the the pawn up to e6 which
40:19wins and
40:20after of course after e8 we take king d8 and mate otherwise if king e7 now we're going to continue
40:30with
40:30queen to g7 notice he can go to e8 now which is his only move but then because we had
40:39the time to do it
40:41guess what happens if i play king e6 you say well he's done a queen right
40:48um but then we have the mate on on d7
40:53so we have to see where it's on e6 i'm threatening mate on both squares on d7 and f7 we
41:01have to see
41:01that as an idea so therefore let's say he plays king h7 right black's best move of course to play
41:08king queen f6 king g8 now to uh protect it queen g6 check king uh h8 notice again not f8
41:19because we have
41:19a similar pattern remember the similar pattern with f8 and so if we go to f8 again we give the
41:28black
41:28king some time to move up because the king f8 is going to lose the game why we need the
41:36both the
41:36king and the queen coordinated against the pawn to win the game but king f8 gives black time to move
41:42the king up say it goes to d5 goes to e7 we go to g7 now remember the king moves
41:49and the queen
41:49moves king moves and the queen moves that's the balance we go to e8 now so we're going to go
41:56to
41:57e6 similar to this and of course if you now in here we of course if we get if we
42:06promote then it's mate
42:07so we can't promote to a queen after e6 you can promote to a knight
42:14similar idea right we go we can go to
42:25i think what a d6 i believe or e5
42:32problem with e5 now is he has the check right
42:39let's say d6 now threatening mate here knight g6 queen f6 right we're threat still threatening mate
42:51king has nowhere to move the knight has to move
42:54knight f4 and we simply have to meet there's going to be multiple ways to get to this position
43:02now we can also go to e5 so you can pick one of those moves um personally i like playing
43:09e6 because
43:11so i'm sorry after e6 the knight moves or the knight gives check so personally i like to play
43:20on d6 because i have a mate on the next move uh so e5 has made in three this is
43:28also made in three as
43:30well no made in two right one two okay okay they're all made in three so we can also look
43:41at
43:42king e5 as well knight e6 king takes king d8 and then we have mate on d7 notice we're all
43:51aiming for the d7 square
43:53now the other way you can do it this is where this is more of an art than anything else
43:58is oh yeah now
44:01they're saying d5 okay because they're saying d6 is correct i just saw that and i say okay i'm
44:07threatening mate on next move it has to be decent as long as there's no forks 96 we simply just
44:13take
44:14king e6 we got the the uh direct opposition and then king d8 and then queen d7 mate
44:20so we come to the same position whether we go to d5 d6 or e5 it's just d6 to me
44:28i like it a little
44:28more because we have an immediate main threat on the next move so instead of playing king f8 where
44:34you give black time to move the king up we're gonna play king h8 king h8 now we draw the
44:41game
44:42how's that well if i play king so here if we stay on the um
44:50first of all if i if i just move the king up he queens so we have to do something
44:56to stop it from
44:57cleaning right so i play queen d6 then again what does he do once he tries to prevent the pawn
45:03from
45:04queen we move our king into position then queen e6 to queen e6
45:13to stop that from queening right to pin the pawn he just moves out of the pin place king g7
45:21and notice our king can't get in position fast enough right so oops
45:29after king g7 we have to repeat the same pattern queen g4 okay uh remember king f8 is bad we
45:38cannot
45:39play king f8 why because it's the same pattern again the idea in the end game is we want to
45:45maneuver
45:45around to get into the position that's a winning position because of course king d5 wins okay we have
45:51the the tempo we have the time we have the move to get we have the time to make the
45:57move to the square
45:58we want to go to so we instead of at queen g4 uh we can play king h7 now okay
46:07uh or king h8 because we
46:11go h8 h7 h8 h7 notice the king is cut off and because not only not only that but because
46:19we're why
46:20it's starting to clean on the next move so queen h3 now or queen h4
46:27uh we go to h5 we're just going to go back to g7 h3 also go to g7 so it
46:35doesn't matter let's say h3 now
46:38maybe the idea of d7 he just goes to g7 and i can just go back to g3 this is
46:46just going to be drawn
46:48and then after h2 the king to position get into position king g7 king g7 he just draws the game
46:58you can the thing is white black never has the chance to move his king up because white can
47:03actually queen on the next move notice that when when he queens the next move there's no check
47:08that when the king moves he takes the queen so instead let's say he plays queen h6 check stops
47:16the pawn right then he's going to go back to g8 if check it goes to h8 now here's the
47:23here's the thing
47:23is why is this a draw you say well i can just take the pawn right but if i take
47:28the pawn on f7
47:30it's a stalemate there's nowhere for the king to escape to so this is a drawn position all right
47:41so let's talk about some key points from this position here notice because the king and the
47:47queen are on the opposite sides of the board and the king is already on the seventh rank and with
47:52the pawn being on seventh rank we have a critical position in which that we need
47:55if we're going to win the game we have to stop the pawn from queening so what is white oh
48:00sorry
48:01he's on the sixth rank but he can get to the seventh rank to support the pawn so what does
48:05he do he moves the king so even after i tried checking him and stuff right he always because
48:11he's right either next to or diagonal to he's on the eighth rank to support the pawn i never have
48:18a chance to
48:19do right uh okay i have chance once to move the king up but once you play on g7 right
48:31he also supports
48:33it from this side too so all this other stuff like pinning it just does he just goes back and
48:40forth notice
48:41there's a stalemate mating theme right when i just he goes back and forth stalemating theme with
48:47if the queen takes pawn as stalemate also remember if i play kings of d5 can also queen
48:56so and then of course you then of course also you can check him on h6 so this is stalemate
49:04the idea is
49:04the king goes to the corner where he's cut off there's no other moves and then it's a draw
49:12both sides the king is going to support the pawn you see going to g8 g8 g7 right and then
49:19when the
49:20queen is in position to take the pawn you just go to h8 so let's go to the next position
49:28the difference in positioning here is our black is much farther advanced okay he has a direct opposition
49:35it is black to play otherwise white would queen and this would be a completely different story
49:42so what we want to do first as black we want to prevent that pawn from queening
49:47whoops sorry let's we have two options okay we can play queen a7 which prevents the pawn from
49:54queen or he can play queen b2 now the idea with queen b2 is we want to force him try
50:00to force him
50:01away from the pawn but the problem with it is after he can still play king g8 and after king
50:08g uh let's
50:09say queen sorry king g8 and queen b3 pinning him again so he said okay no problem king g6 but
50:18then here
50:19guess what happens if he this becomes a knight with check right there's one possibility right let's say
50:28he gets a becomes a queen with check then we give the check king over and we give the mate
50:35notice here
50:38he can block but he's gonna i would take and then we have it's basically made in three he blocks
50:44i take
50:44he moves i check he moves again it's me so it's going to be a mate on f7 if there
50:51isn't a mate on h7
50:52so block right then the king moves and the king moves again and we have to meet on this
51:00so best move here is to stop him from the pawn from advancing
51:06right simple enough right pawn can advance king goes to h8 if the king goes to h8 guess what happens
51:14similar to the other game right if i take the pawn it's a draw right
51:20see oh excuse me if i yeah if i take the pawn with check
51:25it's a draw why is it a draw because if i his only move is to go to h8 the
51:31minute i go to h6
51:33h6 it's a stalemate so i believe if i'm not mistaken because he plays king h8 and oh wait excuse
51:43me he can
51:44take king h8 let's look at this maybe i'm wrong okay oh no sorry excuse me king h8 uh we
51:55give him a square with
51:56king c7 queen c7 then he goes to g8 we play uh f5 or f6 to get the opposition yeah
52:05i can play f even f6 here
52:08i think we can play f6 because if he goes to g8 it's mate so it's showing f is showing
52:17made in two with f5
52:19i'm meeting on f7
52:24g6 is also possible g6 h8 they made on h7 this way
52:35um of course f8 same idea we're either going to mate on f7 or h7
52:44uh g8 g8 g6 yeah so you can or even g7 at this point
52:53right so king h7 is not going to work because black i mean white will have a square to move
52:59to
52:59you that's the difference than the other position
53:04so king h7 just loses out there okay so we place king h8 now king h8 is if you take
53:14the pawn now it
53:15is a still me because the king will have nowhere to go so what we do in this case is
53:21we say okay we have
53:24to give him a square how do we do it well we how about we move our king up to
53:30threaten the pawn and when
53:32it queens we give mate on h7 notice the with king on being on g6 if we look through the
53:40piece we see
53:41that that g6 will support the checkmate on h7 so instead of a queen f7 of course this is just
53:48a
53:48stalemate okay because of course the white king has nowhere to go without getting in check but he
53:56has no other moves to make therefore it's a stalemate and that's a draw half to half right
54:06so king g6 and then of course what do we have we have the knight as that's one option because
54:14we see
54:14the queen doesn't we just immediately gets mated right so this will stop the mate this will give check
54:21we move the king over right we're still threatening mate on h7 then it goes to d7 say okay fine
54:30now we
54:31have some options now but we have to calculate what's faster do we take the knight or do we give
54:36check
54:36on the back rank well if we give check on the back rank what happens well he only has one
54:43move which is
54:44the block and then we take notice with the king we've cut off the squares over to g7 and h7
54:51and then
54:53it's just a matter of giving check on the back rank okay so that's a check i go to h6
55:00another option is we
55:02can play e8 now it's not going to start uh change anything because guess what happens i'm still going
55:08give check on the back rank and he's still going to have to block with a knight and and i
55:11still wouldn't
55:12right now e6 so that's one way but the better way of course is just to meet on h7 right
55:20yes um let's see
55:28yeah i could give a check again on a8 and we'd have the same thing except that
55:33i can meet in one move that would be better all right so 96 just loses every actually everything
55:39loses at this point it's that 97 would be a little bit well it'll last an extra move
55:47so and then of course queening also loses because we give a mate on a7 so either we're going to
55:55mate
55:55them on f8 or a7 pick your poison right so with this position we noticed with the with the position
56:02in here is that our king is much farther advanced it's on the g5 square we also notice that our
56:08queen can get into position right to pin the pawn and then after that we can follow up with our
56:15king
56:16and we would just right we pin it he moves we move our king up
56:22and notice he can't escape the mate on a7 remember with the the knight coming out we just move our
56:29king
56:29over you gotta have a check and there's nothing more he can do if he goes to d7 we just
56:35take it
56:35right and then threaten the mate notice that with d7 now and i already have this as an example okay
56:45we
56:45didn't put d7 we're just going to take he has a square on ga to move to then we give
56:52them eight we
56:53give them eight on g7 or we can give them eight on e8 depends on what you prefer both is
56:59made in one
57:00to equally good and that will settle that position so we let's look at one more position here
57:08same type of idea the difference is is my king is on g4 instead of g5 same type of procedure
57:16queen a7
57:17king e8 queen b8 except in this case we want to zigzag over right we want to give check again
57:25to the
57:25king right because if we move the king up again it's going to become a queen king e7 queen e5
57:33check
57:34and we go to d7 remember it's the same kind of example we play queen f6 just like the earlier
57:40examples it stops the pawn cut off cuts the king off from f uh from e7 so he has to
57:45go to e8 and
57:47then we played the queen e6 check right so this is our key move we have the check we're gonna
57:53and the
57:53idea with this is we're zigzagging around on the board so queen e6 check king f8 and now we have
57:59time
57:59to move the king on f5 we have this king on f5 to move uh the king now has time
58:08to move the king up
58:10we're gonna play f6 and then with f6 threaten the main so after king g7 again we pin it
58:17alternatively could go to d7 and after king h8 we go to g6 similar as before if you queens
58:25we made on h7 notice that on on the knight move we can actually go well we could go on
58:35f6 or we can go
58:39let's see equal f6 yeah so f question is h6 why not h6 oh excuse me excuse me because the
58:51check
58:51right so we have the knight d7 check we have the check okay so we play king okay then we
59:01have this
59:02draw and then it's a draw because he plays king f5 and then he wins the knight wins the queen
59:07so the
59:09defender if he can find a way to to fork at the end the queen and the knight this is
59:14a draw
59:17right this will draw him the game okay and so instead of d7 we have to see that we want
59:24to go
59:25to a light square and a queen's on a light square we have to see okay if we don't want
59:30to do that
59:30that because there's a potential fork there we go on e7 north
