00:02Hello and a very good evening, Vanakkam. You're joining us live here on India Today on Super 6.
00:07This is a special broadcast I'm bringing to you from Chennai. I'm standing in front of 4th St. George,
00:13the throne of power in Chennai. And guess who's going to be seated there in a few days from now?
00:19Talapati Vijay. He's no longer just the Talapati of Indian cinema, of Tamil cinema. He's the Talapati
00:24of Tamil Nadu now. So much that's been happening in the last 24 hours since that mandate clearly
00:29came in favour of the TVK. Remember, they're just short of the majority mark. And so there are a lot
00:35of questions about who really will join hands with the TVK. What will that look like? What really
00:42will Vijay focus on when he forms the government? When is he taking oath? All of those questions,
00:48we've got answers for on the special one-hour broadcast that I'm bringing to you from beautiful
00:53Singar Chennai. So we've got lots packed for you. All my colleagues will be joining you
00:58from the ground, getting you all the different updates that are coming in, whether it's the TVK,
01:03Vijay's movement, the DMK, their introspection and much, much more. We begin with the headlines.
01:17After Vijay's blockbuster victory, all eyes on government formation talk. Sources say,
01:22Vijay eyeing for Congress left VCK as allies. Vijay plans for swearing in on 7th May,
01:27but Lok Bhavan says no official communication yet.
01:35Stalin submits resignation to Tamil Nadu governor. Stalin vows comeback after a poll defeat.
01:41TVK won just 17 lakh votes more, essentially 3.5 percent more votes than DMK.
01:54Mamata Banerjee is defiant. Big vote to recharge against BJP says she will not tender her resignation.
02:01Allegiant BJP stole votes in Bengal.
02:10Korn Banerjee, BJP's first Bengal chief minister. Five names in the CM race. Two-time giant killer,
02:16Shuvendu frontrunner, Dilip Ghosh. State BJP chief, Shamik also in contention. Home minister,
02:21Amit Shah, appointed observer of Bengal.
02:29And Nari Akrosh against Manta Banerjee caused to the election. BJP women candidates,
02:34Sandesh Khali survivor wins polls. RG Corr victim's mother, Ratna Debnath, wins.
02:40And BJP Bengal candidate, Khalita Maji, a domestic worker, records the epic win for the BJP.
03:01Okay, let's begin with big breaking news that's coming in. Everyone's been asking one question.
03:06When will Vijay sit behind me in Fort St. George as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu?
03:12We've got details for you here on India Today or when that swearing in could be.
03:16And we're hearing it could be as early as day after tomorrow on 7th May.
03:21As we speak right now, Vijay is holding a meeting at his Patina Parkham residence,
03:26which is close to where I am in Fort St. George estate.
03:29He's holding a meeting in his apartment there to figure out exactly what should be the TVK's course of action.
03:36He's met with the MLAs. He's been declared the legislative party leader.
03:39That's just a mere formality. But in all likelihood, he's not going to wait for all of the support to
03:44come in from other parties.
03:46He's going to go ahead and not just take claim to form the government, which we're hearing could happen tomorrow,
03:51but also go ahead and take oath.
03:53That historic oath-taking ceremony in all likelihood will happen on 7th May in Chennai.
04:00It's going to be a grand event. There's no doubt about that superstar skill, essentially, even for the chief minister.
04:06So, from superstar, you'll now have a super CM.
04:10So, lots of excitement building up right now in Tamil Nadu.
04:147th May, it looks like, could be the date.
04:16But remember that as far as the TVK's numbers go, they're at 108.
04:20You're minus the fact that Vijay has won two seats, so one seat.
04:24You're minus from there, it's 107.
04:25Minus the speaker, you reach 106.
04:28But ultimately, the majority mark is 118.
04:30So, how can Vijay actually take oath?
04:33Well, essentially, one week after he's sworn in as the chief minister is when he's expected to prove his numbers
04:39on the floor of the house in a floor test.
04:41And so, he'll have that one-week buffer to go ahead and figure out what he wants to do.
04:45And clearly, he's sending out a message that, look, my top priority is to form the government first.
04:51I'll bring A. Pramod Madhav as well as Anika Kesha for more details on this.
04:55Pramod, to you first, what are you picking up from your sources?
04:57Is the swearing-in ceremony going to happen in just about 48 hours from now?
05:06Well, A. Pramod Madhav is very certain the MLAs who have come to meet Vijay and Panayur office,
05:10they have been instructed and requested to stay in Chennai until the 7th of May.
05:15And this is where they've been actually told that Vijay is actually planning to go ahead
05:18and, you know, the swearing-in ceremony to be conducted on 7th of May.
05:20In fact, those people who have residence in Chennai will stay in Chennai.
05:23And those who want any kind of accommodation from other parts of the Tamil Nadu will actually stay at 4
05:28points.
05:28So, all those arrangements have been made.
05:30But the important aspect here is that, like, now the governor will have to invite him.
05:34Time has also already been sought by Vijay earlier itself.
05:36So, once the governor invites him and Vijay can show that he wants to form the government over there,
05:41the procedures will start.
05:42However, we've also been told that in the place they have chosen for this particular ceremony,
05:46so by now is actually the Nehru Stadium and work has also started over there.
05:51Another important aspect is that, like, Vijay, just like you mentioned,
05:53he's actually conducting multiple meetings.
05:55One is about the cabinet and close to 20 members have been chosen.
05:59Very clearly, the people we suggested earlier,
06:01Busi Anand, Adav Arjuna, Aarun Raj Kamra, Aarun Raj, Nirmal Kumar,
06:06those names are also there along with VS Babu and such.
06:09But on the other same parallel part itself,
06:11his advisors are also deciding who should be called in for the alliance.
06:15Just like you mentioned, it's going to be two weeks at the time,
06:17Vijay might ask if that necessity comes,
06:19that he needs to prove majority in the Assembly.
06:21And for him, actually, the advisors very clearly state
06:24that Congress is on their side,
06:26but they also want the left party's VCK.
06:29But when we spoke to DMK, TK Salongan very clearly says
06:32that the left and VCK will not go.
06:35If I asked about Congress, he said he's not sure about that,
06:38but the left and Congress, I mean, the left and VCK will not go.
06:41No, you know what, Ramon, I'm going to come back to you on, really,
06:43what's happening as far as those tie-up talks are concerned.
06:46I just want to focus on whether the swearing-in ceremony is happening
06:49in two days from now or not.
06:51Let's get you an exclusive news break on that.
07:00So we've spoken exclusively to the governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Arlekar,
07:05on whether he's received any request from the TVK
07:09and a proposed date for the swearing-in ceremony.
07:12Now, the governor has told India today at this point
07:16that he is waiting for official communication about the number of MLAs
07:20and then there'll be a conversation about the formation of the government.
07:23This is the first time the governor is speaking out
07:26on exactly what the timeline will look like.
07:28Here's that exclusive conversation.
07:30The governor on record confirming he's still going through
07:33the details, the formalities before finalizing a date.
07:43You've seen the election pan out in Tamil Nadu
07:46and now the TVK has become the singer's largest party.
07:50Any official communication has come through the party, sir,
07:52to meet you?
07:53Because I think they have sought two weeks' time
07:55to meet you and prove the floor test.
07:58No, only communication the party is saying to me
08:02that they have got a mandate of so much so percentage of the voters.
08:08Okay.
08:09That is all it is.
08:10That is not sufficient.
08:11I have asked them if you may have proper communication.
08:14Okay.
08:15That is, my FDF, vegetable secretary have communicated to them.
08:20Okay.
08:20And they will be doing it very shortly and then I will decide.
08:24Sir, there are reports that on May 7th or 8th,
08:27they would want to meet you and seek your time.
08:29Has any communication on that date come in, sir?
08:31No, no, let me get the full details of the candidates,
08:38sorry, MLAs, elected persons.
08:41Then it will be decided.
08:44Okay, let me bring in Nagarjun Dworkanath
08:46who got us an exclusive conversation
08:48with the governor of Tamil Nadu.
08:51Naga was very clear that the governor is saying,
08:53look, I don't have the details just yet.
08:56I'm going to wait for the final number of MLAs
08:58before moving forward.
08:59But if he does give time to Vijay tomorrow to stake claim,
09:03that means then the road ahead is clear
09:05for a swearing-in day after tomorrow.
09:07Well, absolutely.
09:08In fact, our governor spoke exclusively to India today
09:11and he said that till now,
09:13TVK has only given me the official communication
09:15of the vote percentage and not the numbers.
09:17That also means that 108, 107,
09:20that numbers we're talking about,
09:22has not been officially communicated
09:24to the Tamil Nadu governor,
09:26also for Lok Bhavan.
09:27As of now, what the TVK has communicated is
09:30that of the vote percentage,
09:33the principal secretary of the Honorable Governor Office
09:35or the Lok Bhavan in Tamil Nadu.
09:37Maybe tomorrow morning,
09:39the TVK party will officially put out a statement
09:42or a communication channel to the Lok Bhavan
09:45saying that they have 108 MLAs with them
09:48and hence they seek the time of the governor
09:50to prove the majority
09:51and to be sworn in as the chief minister
09:53because they're the single largest party.
09:55And the governor has said that
09:56the moment I get the communication from TVK
09:59officially on the number of MLAs,
10:00he would be flying into Chennai
10:01and would be taking up the swearing-in process.
10:04His schedule is now kept free, Akshita.
10:06He doesn't have any tour plans
10:08from 7th, 9th, 8th, 10th.
10:10So the moment official communication comes through,
10:12the governor will fly into Chennai
10:13and swear in the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
10:18Okay, interesting.
10:20Thanks very much, Naga, for getting us those details.
10:21Once again, listening to that exclusive conversation
10:24that Nagarjun Twarkandath had
10:25with the Tamil Nadu governor.
10:29You have seen the election pan out in Tamil Nadu
10:32and now TVK has become the singer's largest party.
10:36Any official communication has come to the party, sir,
10:38to meet you?
10:39Because I think they have sought two weeks' time
10:41to meet you and prove the flow test.
10:44No, only communication that RTS sent me
10:48that they have got a mandate of so much,
10:52so percentage of the voters.
10:54Okay.
10:55That is all it is.
10:56That is not sufficient.
10:57I have asked them if you may have proper communication.
11:00Okay.
11:06So there are reports that on May 7th or 8th,
11:13they would want to meet you and seek your time.
11:15Has any communication on that date come in, sir?
11:17No, no.
11:18Let me get the full details of the candidates,
11:24sorry, MLH.
11:25Okay.
11:33Okay, let's cut across to more breaking news
11:35that's coming in right now.
11:37Vijay has been rather active on social media,
11:39now responding to all the wishes that have come in,
11:43greeting him, congratulating him
11:44on the spectacular mandate that he's received
11:47from the people of Tamil Nadu.
11:48He's replied to Rahul Gandhi.
11:50This is important because, remember,
11:51there's a lot of buzz about whether the TVK
11:53and the Congress will be joining hands.
11:56He's responded to Rahul Gandhi's wishes,
11:58saying,
11:58My sincere thanks to the Honourable Leader of the Opposition
12:01in the Luxembourg for the call and kind wishes.
12:03We shall remain committed to excellence in public service
12:06and preserving the cultural ethos of our state,
12:08which requires collective cooperation beyond politics.
12:12We shall prioritise the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.
12:16That's his message to Rahul Gandhi.
12:18What's his message to Prime Minister Modi,
12:20where Prime Minister yesterday had,
12:22in fact, put out a wish for Vijay.
12:24Vijay has responded to him saying,
12:26Thank you, Honourable Prime Minister,
12:27for your greetings.
12:28The well-being of our people remains our only goal.
12:31Transcending politics,
12:32we shall focus on the state's progress
12:34and the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.
12:36We look forward to the union government's support
12:38in this endeavour.
12:40Are we going to see more state versus centre politics?
12:43Ultimately, looking at this,
12:45it's good to see that there is good camaraderie
12:47between the two leaders.
12:48That's what will benefit the people of Tamil Nadu.
12:51I'll bring in Anaga Keshia for more details on this.
12:54Anaga, Vijay busy on social media,
12:56or rather his team is busy on social media,
12:58responding to all of those wishes.
13:00I think what also will gain the spotlight
13:02is his message to Rahul Gandhi.
13:04I mean, so many questions about whether the TVK
13:06and Congress will come together.
13:13Well, in fact, that is a sign that a lot of political parties
13:16are now openly acknowledging the fact that Vijay is a force.
13:20The fact that he was underestimated for so long.
13:22And now, the fact that he has secured such a whopping victory.
13:26A lot of politicians, including the Prime Minister himself
13:30and Rahul Gandhi, both of them,
13:32tweeting and acknowledging TVK's victory.
13:34And then there he was, TVK's Vijay,
13:36responding to all the politicians
13:38and saying that he wants to transcend beyond politics
13:41and work for the people of Tamil Nadu
13:43by keeping politics aside.
13:45It is a very real possibility
13:47that TVK and the Congress might forge an alliance.
13:50In fact, in just about a day or two,
13:52we'll get a very clear picture about whether Rahul Gandhi
13:55has made up his mind to join hands with TVK,
13:59which is actually quite likely.
14:00Because even today, when that meeting happened
14:02in the DMK office,
14:03every single alliance partner was there,
14:05but the Congress took a miss.
14:06So it's quite likely that Congress,
14:08with the support of five MLA's,
14:10might join hands with TVK.
14:13And remember, Congress's support is extremely crucial
14:15for TVK in order to prove that majority.
14:18So we're all on standby for that.
14:22Okay.
14:24All right, Anagar, thanks for those details.
14:26I'll just cut across to another news break coming in
14:28of what we're picking up from the Congress camp.
14:31Here's what sources have told us in the Congress,
14:33that they may actually go ahead
14:35and extend support to Vijay and Tamil Nadu.
14:37So this is big.
14:38The Congress essentially is suggesting
14:40that they're very much keen on going ahead
14:42and extending support to TVK,
14:44which will ensure that they are part of the party in power,
14:48they are part of the government,
14:50the administration in Tamil Nadu.
14:52The state unit is in favour of supporting Vijay.
14:55Ultimately, it's a high command
14:56that will take the call.
14:58Now, reportedly, here's the communication
15:00that Tamil Nadu Congress leaders have given,
15:02that the reason they believe
15:03that they should go ahead and join hands with Vijay
15:06is because otherwise Vijay will join hands with AIA-DMK,
15:09which the Congress believes is effectively
15:11the BJP having its way
15:13and controlling a power centre in Tamil Nadu.
15:17Pramod, it looks like the green signal
15:19has been given by the Tamil Nadu Congress leaders,
15:21but that was never the issue.
15:22The issue is always whether the high command would give or not,
15:26whether the high command would agree or not.
15:31Well, Ashita, one thing is very certain this time
15:33because apparently high command itself was divided
15:35what to do when it came to alliance
15:37in the state of Tamil Nadu
15:38and that's the reason you saw
15:39that Rahul Gandhi taking a different path
15:40while Sonia Gandhi was taking a different path.
15:42In fact, Chidambaram had to come down to Chennai
15:44and Kanimodi had to fly to Delhi
15:46to actually convince that this alliance would work.
15:48But however, even after that,
15:50we saw for the whole six months
15:52while Vijay was completely, you know,
15:54criticizing BMK in various forms,
15:56Congress did not even utter a single word
15:58against Vijay
15:59because they were very, very careful
16:00about their words then also.
16:01And right now, it looks like
16:02even when Rahul Gandhi came for campaign,
16:04a lot of things occurred
16:05which should not have occurred.
16:06It did not happen in 2021.
16:08The born homie, the brotherhood,
16:09we did not see that reflect on the ground.
16:11But right now, of the 28 seats,
16:13Congress has five
16:14and apparently, like many Congress leaders
16:15are going ahead and claiming
16:17that it is okay for them to go ahead
16:18and join hands with TVK.
16:21But Congress also claims
16:22that no kind of like official invite,
16:23they haven't received anything so far.
16:25However, DMK, like I said earlier,
16:27when we spoke,
16:28DMK apparently very clearly says
16:29VCK or the left parties
16:30are not leaving the DMK alliance,
16:33but they are not sure about Congress.
16:35These are the words of the organization.
16:37What we're going to do, Pramodh?
16:38We'll give a breakdown
16:40of a couple of scenarios
16:41in just a bit
16:41of the options really before Vijay,
16:44whether he can join hands
16:45with the AI, DMK.
16:46That will mean a comfortable number,
16:47but it will mean
16:48a whole lot of power complications.
16:50Then you have an option
16:51that Pramodh is referring
16:52to Congress, VCK,
16:53the left, RUML.
16:54That will require
16:55quite a bit of hectic parlays,
16:57negotiations for the part of Vijay.
16:58So a couple of scenarios
16:59and I'll get to that
17:00in just a bit.
17:01Thanks, Pramodh,
17:01for those details.
17:02I'll let our reporters go.
17:03I just want to sum up
17:04what's happened
17:05in the last 24 hours
17:06because after the historic mandate
17:07from the people of Tamil Nadu,
17:09the last 24 hours
17:10has been absolutely packed.
17:12You've had political movements
17:14and of course,
17:14all eyes are on Vijay
17:15to see how he handles
17:17this responsibility
17:18given to him.
17:19It's a huge one.
17:19Like I said
17:20at the beginning
17:21of this broadcast,
17:21he's now the talapati
17:22of Tamil Nadu
17:23and that comes
17:24with its fair share
17:25of issues,
17:27problems to resolve,
17:28etc.
17:29And someone who's got
17:30zero political experience
17:31is now diving deep
17:33into politics,
17:34diving deep
17:35into administration,
17:36will be seated behind me
17:37as the Chief Minister
17:39of Tamil Nadu.
17:40Let's get you
17:40all the updates.
18:03Tamil Nadu has spoken
18:04and it has chosen
18:06its talapati.
18:07In a stunning electoral debut,
18:10Vijay-led TVK
18:11has pinched 108 seats,
18:13emerging as the single
18:14largest party
18:15in the 234-member assembly.
18:18But the majority
18:19mark of 118
18:20remains just out of reach.
18:23With 10 more seats needed,
18:25Vijay has now activated
18:27Plan B,
18:28reaching out for support
18:29to stake claim to power.
18:31Tamil Nadu's verdict
18:32has thrown up
18:33a big question.
18:34What next for Vijay?
18:37The great victory
18:38for democracy,
18:39for people,
18:41for women
18:42and youth,
18:44the message
18:44is very clear.
18:46The cash equation
18:47totally destroy.
18:50The money equation
18:51totally destroy.
18:52The power equation
18:54totally destroy.
18:55The people
18:55have made a miracle
18:56of Vijay sir.
18:57The people
18:58have made a miracle.
18:58Now,
18:58wait for it.
19:00The good alliance
19:01will become Vijay sir.
19:03The government
19:03The government
19:04will become the government.
19:06There are two
19:07clear options
19:08on the table.
19:09Option one,
19:10an alliance
19:11with the AIA-DMK.
19:12If AIA-DMK
19:14extends support,
19:15the numbers
19:16add up comfortably.
19:17TVK's 108 seats
19:19plus AIA-DMK's 47
19:21takes the tally
19:23to 155.
19:25Well above
19:25the halfway mark
19:26of 118.
19:28Option two,
19:29support from Congress
19:30and other smaller parties.
19:32In this scenario,
19:34TVK's 108 seats
19:35along with Congress,
19:37PMK,
19:38left parties,
19:39VCK,
19:40IUML,
19:41DMDK
19:42and AMMK
19:43pushed the tally
19:44to 127.
19:45That's also
19:46above the majority mark.
19:48Making this
19:48a highly likely
19:50alternative.
19:51But with a
19:52wafer-thin majority.
19:55So both roads
19:56lead to power
19:57for Vijay.
19:58The only question is
19:59which alliance
20:01he chooses to take.
20:02At the TVK headquarters
20:04in Chennai,
20:05Vijay held a crucial meeting
20:06with newly elected
20:07MLAs.
20:08Earlier in the day,
20:09he paid floral tributes
20:11to icons
20:11Velunachiyar,
20:13Kamaraj,
20:13Periyar,
20:14Abbedkar
20:15and Anjali Amal,
20:17signaling an inclusive
20:18political pitch.
20:19Sources say
20:20Congress and PMK
20:21are open to supporting
20:22TVK,
20:23but not without conditions.
20:26They are reportedly
20:26seeking two ministerial
20:28births each.
20:29In return,
20:30left parties
20:31and Premlata Vijaykan's
20:32DMDK
20:33are yet to make
20:34their stand clear.
20:53Rahul Gandhi
20:54has already
20:54congratulated Vijay
20:56on his historical debut.
20:58But within Congress,
20:59there's no final word yet.
21:01The Tamil Nadu
21:02Congress in charge
21:03has rushed to Delhi
21:04with the decision
21:05now resting
21:07with the high command.
21:08Notably,
21:09Congress skipped
21:10the DMK-led meeting,
21:11adding to the suspense
21:12over its next move.
21:14We have the
21:15parliamentary committee
21:16meeting and also
21:17to the central leadership.
21:18But all I can say
21:19is that whatever
21:20decision Congress makes
21:21will be in the interest
21:22of the people of Tamirnad.
21:23Freedom!
21:24Freedom!
21:24Freedom!
21:25Freedom!
21:25As Tamirnad
21:26sees Vanakam Vijay,
21:27who will be
21:28his ruling allies.
21:29Freedom!
21:30Freedom!
21:31Freedom!
21:32Vijay has the momentum,
21:34the numbers,
21:34but not the actual
21:36majority.
21:37Next 24 hours
21:38will be crucial
21:39as whole of Tamirnadu
21:40will be watching
21:41who is going to
21:42back Talabadi
21:42to form the government
21:44in Tamirnadu.
21:45with Irfan,
21:47Pramod Madhu,
21:47for India today.
21:51Okay, let's open this up.
21:53Joining me on this broadcast,
21:54I've got Mr. Sumanci Raman,
21:56Mr. Rangaraj Pandey,
21:57and Mr. Nirbal Abraham.
22:00All three of these gentlemen,
22:01through the course
22:02of our election coverage,
22:03have been joining me
22:04on this broadcast.
22:05And today,
22:06I must confess,
22:07I've carefully
22:07hand-picked each of them
22:09to join me
22:09on this broadcast.
22:10Why?
22:11Because the three of them,
22:13in the course
22:13of our election coverage,
22:14were most skeptical
22:15of whether Vijay
22:16would make an impact
22:17or not.
22:18And so,
22:18instead of having
22:19the usual faces
22:20who would say,
22:21wow,
22:21Vijay has done this,
22:22Vijay has done that,
22:23I thought it apt
22:24to get the analysts
22:25who didn't believe
22:26Vijay would have
22:27the impact
22:27that he has had
22:28and understand from them
22:30what really has worked
22:31for Vijay.
22:32Mr. Sumansi Raman,
22:34I'd like to begin
22:34with you.
22:35Good evening, sir.
22:36What do you make
22:36of this mandate?
22:37Obviously,
22:38it puts a whole lot
22:39of responsibility
22:39on Vijay's shoulders,
22:41but 100 plus.
22:43Mr. Sumansi Raman.
22:45Yeah.
22:45First of all,
22:47let me congratulate you
22:49for having got this right.
22:51You were consistently
22:52during the campaign
22:54saying that
22:54Vijay was evoking
22:56a lot of positive response.
22:58And we were wrong
23:00in terms of
23:01underestimating
23:02the kind of impact
23:03that Vijay would have.
23:04We felt he would get
23:06vote share,
23:06but not any significant
23:08number of seats.
23:09This is something
23:10that you picked
23:11on the ground,
23:11so congratulations to you.
23:13So that's the first part.
23:15The second part is
23:17what really worked.
23:19I wish we knew the answer
23:21because quite frankly,
23:24very little of this verdict
23:28from a standard
23:30political analyst perspective
23:31makes too much of sense.
23:33Here was a party
23:35that is all of two years old,
23:38led by a movie star
23:39who hardly campaigned.
23:42I mean,
23:43if you can call
23:4410 meetings
23:45or nine meetings
23:46that he attended,
23:47hardly campaigned.
23:48And,
23:49you know,
23:50was quite inaccessible
23:51for most of the election campaign.
23:53and yet people chose
23:55to repose their trust in him
23:58is something that,
24:00you know,
24:01the sociologists
24:02and others will be studying
24:03for at least a few years now.
24:05But having said that,
24:07I look at the positives.
24:09One,
24:10money does not
24:11necessarily buy votes.
24:13So that,
24:14this election
24:14has conclusively proven,
24:16unless you're doling out
24:17huge sums of it,
24:18like perhaps in
24:19Coimbatore South
24:20or whatever,
24:21but you're,
24:21the days of
24:221,000 and 1,500
24:23buying you votes
24:25are gone.
24:26Second,
24:27caste equations
24:28are not cast in stone
24:30for elections.
24:31And I think that
24:32these are the two
24:33biggest takeaways.
24:35I also put out
24:36a few other things,
24:37you know,
24:37political experience
24:38is optional,
24:39it is not required.
24:40Talking to the media,
24:42giving interviews,
24:43being communicative
24:44with the media,
24:45you know,
24:45with the public
24:47through media interactions,
24:49again,
24:49it's optional,
24:50not required.
24:51So a lot of new lessons.
24:53We don't know
24:54how many of these
24:55are going to stand
24:56the test of time.
24:57But certainly,
24:58the fact that caste
24:59has been taken out
25:00of the equation
25:01largely by Vijay
25:02in this election
25:03and money
25:04has been taken out,
25:06I think I would
25:06see those two
25:07as the most welcome,
25:09you know,
25:10developments in this stage.
25:15I agree.
25:15And, you know,
25:16what I saw on the ground
25:17also,
25:17Mr. Sumansi Raman,
25:18is that,
25:18you know,
25:19whatever campaigns
25:20that I covered,
25:21the usual people
25:22coming in vans
25:23and buses being brought,
25:25they're almost like,
25:25you know,
25:25cattle to be crowding
25:27up an entire rally.
25:28That wasn't happening
25:29at Vijay's events.
25:30It was still happening
25:31at DMK and AI,
25:32DMK's events,
25:32not happening
25:33at Vijay's events.
25:34So I just wanted
25:34to add that point as well.
25:35Mr. Rangaraj Pandey,
25:37the last time I had you
25:38on the show, sir,
25:38you were skeptical
25:40about whether Vijay
25:41would be able
25:42to make any inroads
25:43in rural pockets.
25:4524 hours after
25:46the mandate, sir,
25:47what do you think?
25:48Because clearly,
25:49Vijay hasn't been limited
25:50to one area
25:51or two regions.
25:52He's spread
25:53across Tamil Nadu.
25:55Without any doubt,
25:56it was completely
25:57a surprise,
25:58no doubt at all.
25:59Everyone,
26:00no one predicted
26:01that was the real case
26:03according to Mr. Vijay's victory.
26:05It was a huge one,
26:07as you rightly said,
26:08completely without any
26:10limiting to
26:11any particular region.
26:13It went through
26:13west and north
26:14and south even,
26:15the central Tamil Nadu also.
26:17So two things
26:18we can assure about.
26:20One,
26:21people doesn't want
26:23DMK as well as
26:24DMK.
26:25They wanted a change
26:25after both
26:27the revenue parties.
26:28That's the main case
26:30we saw.
26:30And as Mr.
26:31Sumansaraman mentioned,
26:34the strategy
26:35and methodology
26:36of the campaigning
26:37is completely changed
26:38because it is
26:40a digital era now.
26:42They can,
26:42the leaders can reach
26:43the public
26:44directly with the
26:45digital medium.
26:46So you need not
26:47to repeat the same
26:48dialogue everywhere.
26:49Once you spoke
26:50means it can be
26:51in history forever
26:53because of the
26:54digital era
26:54and the generation,
26:56the next generation,
26:57the Gen Z
26:58is completely
26:59in social media.
27:00So you need not
27:02to communicate
27:03through the so-called
27:04conventional,
27:05traditional media
27:06and we have
27:07seen the same
27:08in the cases
27:08of Mr.
27:10M.G.
27:10Ramachandran
27:10as well as
27:11Ms. Jayalita.
27:12They were also
27:13not so close
27:15to social,
27:16so close to
27:17television media
27:18and the press.
27:19They were also
27:19completely detached
27:20and they had
27:21the direct connect
27:22with the public.
27:22when one particular
27:24leader already
27:25reached,
27:26as Mr. Vijay
27:26himself told
27:27in Madurai,
27:29political parties
27:30used to start
27:31the party
27:32and reach the
27:33houses one by one.
27:34In the case
27:35of Mr. Vijay,
27:36he already reached
27:37every household,
27:38then he started
27:39the party.
27:40So the reach
27:40through the film
27:41industry,
27:42that was a major
27:43one because
27:44nobody in Tamil Nadu
27:46will ask
27:46who is that Vijay.
27:47So Vijay is a
27:48well-known,
27:49familiar and
27:50household name.
27:50Every individual
27:51knows about
27:52all the six
27:53crore added
27:55citizens of
27:56Tamil Nadu,
27:57India,
27:58so in Tamil Nadu.
27:59So it is a
27:59very interesting
28:00one.
28:01The only thing
28:02is anti-incumbency
28:04played a major
28:05role and people
28:06doesn't want to
28:07go to the
28:08ADMK, DMK,
28:09ADMK because
28:10you are seeing
28:11that right from
28:1291, completely
28:13it was 91,
28:1496, the DMK
28:15government,
28:16ADMK government,
28:16every other time
28:17they were changing
28:18the government
28:18only in 2011
28:20and 2016.
28:22ADMK
28:22continued their
28:24government.
28:25So now people
28:26wanted to change
28:27the politics
28:27not only from
28:29ADMK.
28:30Just to bringing
28:30you in on that,
28:32you know,
28:33Mr. Pandey has
28:33spoken about how
28:34youngsters particularly
28:36were very, very
28:37impressed by what
28:38Vijay said and
28:39especially the
28:40social media campaign
28:41so they were
28:41driven by that.
28:43Very often we
28:44refer to this as
28:44the gentrification
28:45of an election
28:46in Tamil Nadu
28:47and this is a
28:47prime example of
28:48that.
28:48There is no doubt
28:49that the youth
28:49kind of led
28:50the movement.
28:51But do you
28:51think that this
28:52was limited to
28:53just youngsters?
28:54What explains the
28:55older age groups
28:56also choosing to
28:57go with a Vijay?
28:58Because the
28:58constant argument
28:59was look,
29:00the youngsters
29:01didn't see a
29:02Jai Lalitha,
29:02didn't see a
29:03Kalenir era and
29:04that's why they're
29:05kind of shifting
29:06towards Vijay.
29:07For the older age
29:08groups they've seen
29:08that and yet many
29:10of them have chosen
29:11to go with Vijay.
29:12What explains that
29:14to you?
29:14Well, I think
29:15there are multiple
29:16factors.
29:16First of all,
29:18let me congratulate
29:18you as some of
29:19the other panelists
29:20did because the
29:21only anthropologist
29:21that got it right
29:22was Access My India.
29:23The only news
29:24anchor that got it
29:25right was you
29:26across all of my
29:26discussions at least.
29:28Anyway, so as
29:29analysts what we
29:30look at usually
29:31when we come to
29:32conclusions is we
29:33look at historical
29:34data, right?
29:36Historical precedence.
29:37When I looked at
29:37the history as I
29:39discussed with you
29:39the other day as
29:41well, MGR took
29:4125 years, Jair Liddar
29:42took nine years.
29:44This was the history
29:44and when I looked
29:45at recent history,
29:46Vijay Khan, who
29:47was also a superstar,
29:48ended up getting
29:49just 8% vote share.
29:51Kamal Hassan ended
29:51up getting just 2%
29:52vote share.
29:53Rajini Khan, because
29:55he was worried
29:55about the vote share,
29:56did not even attempt
29:57to go into politics
29:58at the end.
29:58So it didn't seem
30:01probable that Vijay
30:02would come up with
30:02such a huge number.
30:05That's one.
30:05But I also think
30:06anti-incumbency,
30:07strong anti-incumbency
30:08in terms of promises
30:09fulfilled because most
30:11of the big promises
30:13were left unfulfilled.
30:15NEAT, for example,
30:16during the 2021 campaign,
30:18Stalin was constantly
30:19talking about NEAT
30:20and finding an alternative
30:21to NEAT or either
30:22abolishing NEAT,
30:23but remained unfulfilled.
30:25Gas subsidies,
30:26100-rupee gas subsidies,
30:27remained unfulfilled.
30:29He promised that
30:29petrol prices would be
30:30brought down by 5 rupees,
30:31only brought it down
30:32by 3 rupees.
30:33Diesel would be brought
30:34down by 4 rupees.
30:35Zero.
30:35He did not touch it at all.
30:37Educational loans
30:38will be wayward.
30:39Did not touch that.
30:40So there are many,
30:40many factors
30:42that led to anti-incumbency.
30:43And you can add to that
30:45the controversies,
30:46the scandals,
30:46the corruption,
30:47the commission scandals,
30:49all of that.
30:50So that was second.
30:51And as Mr. Rangarajan
30:52rightly pointed out,
30:53when you have such
30:54strong anti-incumbency,
30:56what is your option?
30:57Your option B
30:58was always AIDMK.
30:59But AIDMK as a party
31:01was weak because of
31:02internal struggles itself.
31:03Because across the last
31:05five or six years
31:05or seven years,
31:06four years left.
31:08Shashikala was sidelined.
31:10Deen Agarajan was alienated.
31:13Sengotian,
31:13someone who worked
31:14for 50 years
31:14for that party,
31:15left and joined the TVK.
31:17So people watching this
31:18felt that inconsistency.
31:21They did not find
31:22AIDMK as a quality opponent.
31:24So all those votes
31:25also went to Vijay.
31:27I think that explains
31:28the older folks' votes.
31:29The younger votes
31:32definitely went to Vijay
31:33for multiple reasons,
31:34as you've already explained
31:34in your previous shows.
31:35Yeah.
31:39No, I think what's
31:40very clear is,
31:41look, the mandate
31:41has gone to Vijay,
31:42but there are challenges ahead
31:43and I want to discuss
31:44that also with all of you
31:46in just a bit.
31:46I just want to cut across
31:47to a news break coming in.
31:48There were a lot of questions
31:49about which seat Vijay
31:51would pick,
31:52considering he's won
31:52both his seats
31:53of Trichy East
31:54as well as Perambur.
31:55We are hearing that
31:56Vijay is going to retain
31:58his Perambur seat
31:58in Chennai
31:59and give up
32:00his Trichy East seat.
32:02So he's in all likelihood
32:03going to resign
32:04from that seat very soon,
32:06in which case
32:06it will also call
32:07for bipolar.
32:08And then we'll have to see
32:10really what the mandate is.
32:11In all likelihood,
32:12the TVK will put up
32:13a strong candidate there
32:14to replace Vijay.
32:15But that's a quick news break
32:16that I also wanted
32:17to just reflect
32:18on which seat
32:19Vijay would pick.
32:20He's picking Perambur
32:21is what we're hearing.
32:22Mr. Soomansi Raman,
32:23now going forward,
32:24the road ahead.
32:25Here's where the real test
32:26for Vijay kicks off.
32:28Look, he's proved his mettle
32:29as someone who can perform
32:30in an election.
32:31But beyond that,
32:32the biggest test
32:33for a politician perhaps
32:34is in stitching off alliances,
32:36ensuring numbers
32:37are on your side
32:37and doing it
32:38rather shrewdly at that.
32:39Do you think
32:41that this
32:41and the next 48 hours
32:43perhaps was crucial
32:44to kind of identify
32:45whether Vijay has it
32:46in him in that sense?
32:48Actually, no.
32:49Because clearly
32:50neither the DMK
32:51nor the AIDMK alliance
32:53is interested
32:53in destabilizing Vijay
32:55at this stage.
32:56Right now,
32:57they would be
32:57more than comfortable
32:58allowing him
32:59to form a government
33:00even if it is
33:01a minority government
33:02with the,
33:03you know,
33:04a nudge, nudge,
33:04wink, wink
33:05that some MLAs
33:05may be absent
33:06from a confidence vote.
33:09So, I don't think
33:11that the next 48 hours
33:12would be...
33:13No, so let me throw
33:14two scenarios at you, sir.
33:15Yeah.
33:16Scenario one
33:17of TVK
33:18and AIDMK
33:18joining hands
33:19in which case
33:19numbers are very comfortable.
33:21Scenario two
33:21of kind of stitching
33:22all of these smaller parties
33:23VCK,
33:25left,
33:26Congress,
33:26RUML,
33:27all of them
33:28and TVK.
33:29Which is a better scenario
33:30for Vijay to follow?
33:32Look,
33:32logically
33:33from a stability perspective
33:34AIDMK
33:35is a much better bet.
33:37For the simple reason
33:37it takes the tally
33:38to 150 plus
33:40which at the end of the day
33:41after that
33:42you're not really
33:42almost 160.
33:44So, you're not really bothered
33:45thereafter about
33:46any of the other issues
33:48because the AIDMK
33:51you know,
33:52basically
33:53AIDMK
33:54is what,
33:5447.
33:55So, I'm sorry,
33:55I added the PMK
33:56and the others.
33:57So, just the AIDMK
33:58alone is 47.
33:59So, that would take
34:00them to 154.
34:01So, there's no problem
34:02after that.
34:02But,
34:03the point is
34:04I don't
34:05and I can't see
34:06the AIDMK
34:06offering outside support.
34:08If the AIDMK
34:09option is what
34:10Vijay wants to go with
34:11then he leads
34:13them into government
34:14and that may not be
34:15a bad thing
34:16because Vijay
34:16doesn't have
34:17administrative experience.
34:18He doesn't have
34:19people who can
34:20actually govern
34:21or with a track record
34:22of governance
34:23except say
34:23go to him.
34:24So, it may not
34:25be a bad idea
34:26if he is
34:27contemplating
34:28the AIDMK route.
34:30Now,
34:30the BJP
34:31would be
34:31quite pleased
34:33if Vijay
34:34sought out
34:34the AIDMK
34:35rather than
34:38you know,
34:39try to tinker around
34:40with the Congress
34:41plus CPI
34:42plus CPM
34:43plus PMK
34:45and so on
34:45because even
34:46at best
34:47that would go up
34:48to 122
34:49123
34:50which would
34:50always leave
34:51him vulnerable
34:52whereas this
34:53would give
34:54the government
34:54some kind
34:55of stability.
34:56Yes,
34:57it would be
34:57dependent on
34:57the whims
34:58and fancies
34:58of the AIDMK
34:59but as a
35:01backup plan
35:02should the
35:03AIDMK
35:04at some stage
35:04in the future
35:05want to pull
35:06the plug
35:06he would still
35:07have the option
35:07of going back
35:08to the Congress
35:08and the others.
35:09I mean,
35:10we don't know
35:10how things
35:11will play out
35:12at that stage
35:12but my thinking
35:14is Vijay
35:15can go ahead
35:16and form a
35:17government
35:17technically
35:19without signing
35:20up with anybody
35:21else
35:22as a minority
35:23government.
35:24I don't see
35:25why that option
35:26We're hearing
35:27that in the next
35:28two days
35:29he could take
35:29oath
35:30without actually
35:31reaching out
35:32to any of the
35:32parties for now
35:33but he will
35:34need that
35:34eventually
35:35and so he's
35:36not holding off
35:36or delaying
35:37the swearing-in
35:37just based on
35:38the support
35:39that he'll get
35:39but he is
35:40going to have
35:40to get that
35:41conversation
35:42moving forward
35:43in the coming
35:43days
35:44in the coming
35:44weeks
35:45Mr. Rangaraj
35:45Pandey
35:46for the TVK
35:47right now
35:48what do you
35:49think would
35:50be the ideal
35:50situation going
35:51forward
35:52considering they've
35:52just fallen short
35:53sir
35:54of the majority
35:55mark
35:55the other
35:55question that's
35:56constantly being
35:57asked
35:57is whether
35:58the Congress
35:59missed out a
36:00golden opportunity
36:01right now
36:02they're kind of
36:02repenting
36:03we're hearing
36:03that there's
36:04some conversation
36:04of them
36:05joining the TVK
36:05should they
36:06have done
36:07this months
36:07ago sir
36:08instead of
36:08playing second
36:08fiddle to
36:09the DMK
36:11Mr. John
36:12R.O.K.
36:13who is the
36:13advice of Mr.
36:14Vijay
36:14is smarter
36:15than me
36:16so he advised
36:17him throughout
36:18and he got
36:19very good numbers
36:20in this election
36:21also
36:21so I think
36:22better than me
36:23he can advise
36:24them Mr.
36:24Vijay
36:25but we have
36:25to see
36:26two three
36:27options here
36:28so we'd love
36:31to hear what
36:31you have to
36:31say
36:32we have to
36:34understand that
36:34minority vote
36:36the Muslim
36:37and Christian
36:37community votes
36:39heavily went
36:40away from
36:41DMK and
36:41went to
36:42Mr.
36:42Vijay
36:43so he
36:44may have
36:45some
36:46reservations
36:47going with
36:48ADMK
36:48and you know
36:50he is having
36:51very good
36:51relationship
36:52with Mr.
36:53Rahul Gandhi
36:53you can even
36:54call it as a
36:54personal report
36:55with Mr.
36:55Rahul Gandhi
36:56and within
36:57the 2.5
36:58years
36:59we are going
37:00to face
37:00next
37:01to 2029
37:02parliament
37:02election
37:02so keeping
37:03it in that
37:04in mind
37:05he may
37:05choose to go
37:06with both
37:07the communist
37:08parties and
37:09VCK and
37:09Congress
37:10so that will
37:10give you a
37:11comfortable
37:11majority
37:11but as
37:12Dr.
37:13Sumantharaman
37:14rightly
37:14mentioned
37:14that will
37:15be
37:15could be
37:16a trouble
37:17also
37:18that will
37:19be a
37:19turbulence
37:19also
37:20but
37:20instead of
37:21aligning
37:22with
37:22ADMK
37:23there may
37:25something
37:25may
37:26go on
37:27with
37:27ADMK
37:28those
37:29who
37:30were
37:30not
37:30happy
37:31with
37:31Mr.
37:31Adapadi
37:32Pallani
37:32Suman's
37:32decision
37:33they may
37:34also
37:34try to
37:35break
37:35and
37:36they may
37:37come
37:37what we
37:37can see
37:38in the
37:38scenario
37:39of
37:41Raghul
37:41Sardha
37:42or
37:42Eknaat
37:43Sinde
37:43we can
37:43see some
37:44different
37:44kind of
37:45things
37:45that also
37:46may
37:46happen
37:47that could
37:48be
37:48a
37:48comfortable
37:49thing
37:49without
37:50any
37:50reservation
37:51and hesitation
37:51Mr.
37:52Vijay can run
37:53the
37:53government
37:54I don't
37:55think
37:55Mr.
37:57Abraham
37:57just to
37:58bring you
37:58in on
37:58this
37:59I have
38:00to ask
38:00with this
38:01current
38:01situation
38:02and the
38:03mandate
38:03that we
38:03have
38:03seen
38:04is this
38:05the
38:05beginning
38:06of the
38:06end
38:07for the
38:07Dravidian
38:08parties
38:08for the
38:08DMK
38:09or
38:09AIA
38:09DMK
38:10or do
38:10you
38:10think
38:11that
38:11that's
38:11jumping
38:12to far
38:13to
38:14big
38:14conclusions
38:15right
38:15now
38:17I don't
38:18think
38:18it's
38:18the
38:18end
38:18for
38:18both
38:19the
38:19parties
38:19I
38:19think
38:19it's
38:20an
38:20opportunity
38:20to
38:20one
38:21of
38:21the
38:21Dravidian
38:22parties
38:22to
38:23capitalise
38:23on
38:23this
38:24whoever
38:24goes
38:25in
38:25the
38:25right
38:25direction
38:26from
38:26here
38:26will
38:27remain
38:27the
38:27major
38:28power
38:28is
38:28what
38:28I
38:28think
38:29as
38:29far
38:30as
38:30joining
38:30hands
38:30with
38:30AIDMK
38:31I
38:32think
38:32it's
38:32dangerous
38:33for
38:33Vijay
38:34although
38:34yes
38:34administratively
38:35and in
38:36terms of
38:36governance
38:37it might
38:37actually
38:37help him
38:38but
38:38joining
38:39hands
38:39with
38:39a
38:39superpower
38:40in
38:40politics
38:40will
38:41always
38:41backfire
38:42joining
38:42hands
38:42with
38:43minor
38:43powers
38:43although
38:44is
38:44still
38:44dangerous
38:45is
38:46relatively
38:46safe
38:47for
38:48Vijay
38:48at
38:48the
38:48moment
38:48especially
38:49if
38:49he's
38:49trying
38:50to
38:50portray
38:50himself
38:50as
38:51a
38:51alternative
38:52he
38:52should
38:52not
38:53be
38:53joining
38:53hands
38:53with
38:53AIDMK
38:54and also
38:54judging
38:55from the
38:55history
38:55of
38:55DPS
38:56we've
38:56known
38:56all of
38:57the
38:57people
38:57that
38:57I
38:57mentioned
38:57previously
38:58left
38:59because
38:59of
38:59DPS
38:59and
39:00his
39:01stand
39:01so
39:01I
39:01don't
39:02think
39:03we
39:03will
39:03end
39:04up
39:04seeing
39:04a
39:04power
39:04struggle
39:05there
39:05as
39:05well
39:05now
39:06for
39:06Congress
39:07VCK
39:07and
39:08CPI
39:08I
39:08think
39:09they
39:10will
39:10hopefully
39:11remain
39:11with
39:11Vijay
39:12because
39:12if
39:12you
39:13look
39:13at
39:13the
39:13history
39:13of

39:14they've
39:14stayed
39:14with

39:15for
39:15eight
39:15or
39:15nine
39:16probably
39:16eight
39:16occasions
39:17they've
39:17never
39:18been
39:18offered
39:18a

39:28was
39:28offered

39:29all
39:29of
39:29these
39:29people
39:29were
39:30offered
39:30a

39:30but
39:41if

39:45they
39:47will
39:47probably
39:48remain
39:48under

39:49compared
39:50to
39:50an
39:50AIDMK
39:51who
39:51is
39:51still
