00:42A journalist is someone who reports facts and meets people every day.
00:50However, it happens, as it happened to me, as it happened in this territory, to come across facts that will have a
01:01epochal significance.
01:05A quiet, almost Swiss place, where nothing ever happens.
01:10Instead, many things had happened that many of us, including journalists, had not picked up on.
01:33That morning in 1995, there was a Palermo atmosphere, there was a huge procession, something absolutely unheard of for these places.
01:56The Varese case was obviously a new, huge event, with a very significant number of defendants.
02:03The term "bunker court" was also coined in that period, meaning a guarded courtroom that was inaccessible to criminal activity.
02:13I also recall the President of the Court, Arturo Soprano, who is now President of the Court of Appeal of Turin,
02:20so we found ourselves in Turin.
02:24The climate, therefore, was, so to speak, if not as leaden as that of the terrorism trials, it was certainly heavy.
02:35It was the first major trial I handled as a clerk.
02:41And I had gained many other experiences, I had, I was 50 years old.
02:47It was one of the first at the national level.
02:54On June 9, 1995, the Isola Felice maxi-trial began in Varese.
03:00Among the charges, 10 murders, 3 kidnappings, 12 extortions, 18 robberies, arms trafficking and
03:08narcotics.
03:12I had just arrived in Varese, so it was, it was important for the whole city.
03:18They thought it was the Happy Island, but underneath there was also a lot of crime.
03:26This bunker-like classroom was created in what was once a bit of a glory of the industrial province.
03:33An aircraft factory, Air Macchi, the large room where the MB-339 was born,
03:42the plane used by the aerobatic team, the Frecce Tricolori.
03:50There are lawyers, there are cell phones carrying prisoners in chains,
03:57There are cages, there are closed manholes, there are extraordinary security measures.
04:12On the first day of the trial Varese came to a standstill, as the streets were blocked,
04:19Carabinieri and traffic police around, helicopters.
04:23The prisoners arrived by bus, by van, there were many policemen,
04:31because at the time the escort was done by the Carabinieri, not the police.
04:36So it was always full of police.
04:41The hangar had 150 tables, 10 cells, a huge counter for the popular jury,
04:49for the judges and everything you see, the furniture, the jury box,
04:54of the judge, was all that was found in the bunker courtroom on Via San Vito Silvestro.
05:00Even the cages are the same.
05:03Everything that could happen has happened.
05:08There were 135 inmates and some of them were also in 41 bis.
05:13It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed it.
05:18I mean, I wanted to do it and I had to do it.
05:24At that point, okay, a little personal pride,
05:27even doing it well involves enormous sacrifices.
05:30The process itself is difficult.
05:32When you go before a court, you have 180 defendants, you have to know how to manage it.
05:37But, I mean, they're part of our job.
05:41The report signed by Senator Carlos Muraglia in 1994
05:46draws a picture of the activities of mafia organizations
05:49in regions other than those of traditional roots.
05:53For the first time the Parliament of the Italian Republic
05:55makes a report, on behalf of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission,
05:59then it is approved,
06:02which describes the presence and branching out of the mafia
06:06from Rome onwards.
06:08And this was an important sign of novelty,
06:11of change and interest from Parliament
06:14for what was happening.
06:15I repeat, not only in Southern Italy,
06:18but in the rest of the country.
06:19The report highlights how carelessness and refusal
06:23even just considering the problem,
06:26to safeguard the good name and image of their city,
06:30have favored the rooting of mafia organizations.
06:34When the mafiosi arrived in the North
06:36they didn't arrive with a foolish cap and a shotgun in their hands,
06:42they dressed well, double-breasted,
06:45they behaved very well,
06:46they looked like gentlemen who were visiting,
06:49they were tourists.
06:53It was perhaps more the difficult climate outside the Palace of Justice
06:58and investigative areas.
07:00At the time it was also important for us to win on a cultural level
07:05the resistance to admit that the Andrangheta is for Sannò.
07:09There is considerable resistance.
07:13In the years in which the Isola Felice trial begins
07:19the city is still in shock from another sensational trial,
07:24the Tangentopoli investigation.
07:27Engineer Mario Chiesa arrested in Milan
07:30president of a municipal elderly care organization.
07:33The charge is extortion.
07:35The institution manages significant financial assets.
07:51And here 103 people from across the constitutional spectrum ended up in handcuffs.
07:57Here a political class had been completely weeded out.
08:00And on this weeding Umberto Bossi had had an easy time
08:05to build his political thought
08:08and to install the first mayor in Varese,
08:13that's what the mayor of the League had called him.
08:18And then from there the movement grows.
08:22The 90s are very important.
08:24Because after the Falcone and Borsellino massacres
08:29the general climate changes.
08:31Mute on the part of the State, mute on the part of the judiciary,
08:34change on the part of Parliament.
08:36That is, we are finally starting to really do something.
08:38an organic war against the mafia.
08:43The antithetical aesthetic directions
08:45they are the fruit of that period
08:47which were established right at the beginning of the 90s
08:52throughout Italy they are starting to face
08:55in particular the problems of the mafia.
08:58This happens in Calabria, it happens in Campania,
09:01but here's the big news, it's happening in the north too.
09:04In the north of our country, particularly in Lombardy,
09:07there are a number of investigative activities
09:10which strike head-on at mafia organisations,
09:14especially the Andrangheta.
09:15It started this morning in Varese,
09:18in the bunker classroom created from a former factory,
09:20the trial of the ramifications of the mafia
09:23of the Andrangheta in northern Italy.
09:25Episodes that date back to several years ago,
09:28such as the kidnapping and killing of Emanuele Riboli in 74.
09:31We see.
09:33It began in the Assize Court in Varese,
09:36Isola Felice, the maxi-trial against the 'Andrangheta and the mafia
09:39responsible for the most serious criminal acts
09:42consumed in the Varese area over the last twenty years
09:45and in other locations in Lombardy.
09:47In the bunker classroom, created in one of the sheds
09:49of the former factory in Ermachi on Via San Vito Silvestro,
09:52specially equipped,
09:5485 of the 135 defendants were present in ten cages,
09:58most of them in detention
10:01and transferred to Varese from their respective prisons
10:03maximum security.
10:05Absent regrets, especially the number one,
10:08that Antonio Zagari,
10:09who with his revelations had allowed the famous blitz
10:13of January 94, called precisely Happy Island.
10:19Isola Felice was born as a police operation
10:25January 14, 1994,
10:31mainly following the statements
10:34of the justice collaborator Zagari Antonio,
10:39on a precautionary custody order
10:41issued by the Court of Milan
10:44at the request of the DDA of Milan.
10:48I remember that I had dismantled the nativity scene
10:53at the Christmas tree with the children,
10:56then small,
10:58and there is this livid dawn,
11:00these helicopters that suddenly
11:02they begin to circle over the city,
11:04this coming and going of carabinieri gazelles,
11:08of police panthers,
11:09something really important happened,
11:13there is a strange, very strange movement,
11:16for a city that has a slow pace
11:19of the province, of the satiated province.
11:25We are in the Varese area,
11:27from here since the first light of dawn
11:28a major ROS operation has started
11:30and the special units of the Carabinieri.
11:32The Milan District Anti-Mafia Directorate
11:35issued 157 precautionary custody orders,
11:3874 people are accused
11:39and mafia-style criminal association,
11:42then the charges are extortion,
11:44kidnapping, then murder.
11:47The operation called Happy Island
11:49it concerns the largest Calabrian families
11:51of the Andrangheta in northern Italy.
11:53Perhaps no name has been more appropriate.
11:56If we think that it happened in a context,
11:58in a region, in a territory,
12:00it wasn't an island,
12:02but symbolically it is as if it had been an island.
12:04In the sense that all of upper Abrianza
12:08in reality he was living in a very particular situation
12:12with respect to the entire context of the national territory.
12:16There was a gradual military occupation
12:20of a territory by the Andrangheta,
12:23of a part of organised crime.
12:27through progressive rooting
12:30and the appropriation of goods, objects and people.
12:37Virtually nothing was spared.
12:44The gang also took care of the tennis courts,
12:48which they could naturally access,
12:51legitimately, without distinction
12:53even police officers, even magistrates.
12:57For example, the management of nightclubs,
12:59the management of gambling dens.
13:02There was a lot of crime.
13:07The very essence of the neophyte association
13:10which is called Andrangheta or Cosa Nostra
13:13lies in the fact that it determines terror
13:15and psychological subjugation for the mere fact of existing.
13:19So it's clear that we've always had difficulties
13:22in obtaining reports from those who had suffered crimes, etc.
13:31It happened that it suddenly tore open,
13:35and unexpectedly, the veil of silence.
13:39Who had torn this veil of silence?
13:43A character who has been telling his truth for years,
13:49who for years had been a collaborator of justice,
13:53but which had never been believed
13:55until the anti-mafia prosecutor's office in Milan,
13:59Prosecutor Spataro decides to believe this person.
14:04In the meantime, I'll ask you a question that requires a very quick answer.
14:09where you can return to this topic.
14:11Were you part of the Andrangheta?
14:14Yes.
14:15When you start questioning a collaborator,
14:19especially if you sense that it could be of a substantial nature,
14:23the Public Prosecutor must take for granted
14:26that it won't be a one-day adventure,
14:28but it will be a journey that will last months,
14:33and then with the debates years.
14:36So he doesn't have to act like a friend
14:40who cunningly wants to receive what he expects,
14:45must act as if he were representing the institutions,
14:48He asks for the truth, then fights for it to be recognized.
14:53what the law provides.
15:09Collaboration is actually that
15:12so let's say today I find myself here answering myself
15:17starting from when the Milan district attorney's office intervenes
15:22and so from November 11, 1992, if I'm not mistaken,
15:29since she first came to hear me with cancer in Varese.
15:33He spoke very correct Italian,
15:35also because he had come to the north with his father when he was very young,
15:39so he hadn't brought the dialect with him,
15:42of course he knew him, but truly a person
15:44of a clarity in the eye that has few precedents.
15:48When he was contacted with an accommodation
15:50of which he was investigating some kidnappings
15:54which he believed had been carried out by a Calabrese group,
16:00I think of Colonel d'Anza
16:02that my father and some people originally from San Luca
16:09they were determined, they were organizing
16:11who had already organized some kidnappings of people.
16:16It was the period in which a very serious kidnapping had occurred.
16:21And I still remember these images,
16:24when Celadon was freed,
16:28who could barely stand on his feet.
16:32Colonel Ganser, knowing of the initial collaboration
16:39of Zagari, had, let's say,
16:42identified this subject as a possible, let's say, informant.
16:47And thus the info-investigative report was born.
16:55Last night the Carabinieri were on alert, after receiving a tip-off,
16:59they foiled the kidnapping of an industrialist's daughter near Varese.
17:04Eight o'clock in the evening, that January of 1990,
17:09the news comes from the Luino correspondent
17:12that there was an attempted kidnapping in Germiniaga.
17:18Around 3pm we were given certain news
17:22on the objective and the location
17:25where this kidnapping was supposed to take place.
17:30A Golf was used that Zagari was driving.
17:36He from a telephone booth
17:39he warned Colonel Ganser
17:42the place and the person.
17:45It's a kidnapping attempt that ended in bloodshed
17:49because we run on the spot
17:52and we see four dead bodies.
17:55The car that had been reported to us arrived
17:57that is, a white Golf.
18:00Watching this car coming up the road
18:03I waited a few moments
18:05waiting for the occupants of the car
18:08they came down from it.
18:09The four have arrived
18:14with the uniforms
18:16as a financier.
18:19One of the four
18:19with the gun
18:21he was about to shoot.
18:23And the mind races
18:24to the Middle Ages of kidnappings.
18:26Run to Emanuele Riboli
18:29for example
18:29to Tullio De Micheli
18:31two people kidnapped
18:32never come back home.
18:34He also runs at Celadon
18:35to Soffiantini
18:37to an era that was thought to be
18:39ended forever.
18:41Here are the pictures
18:42arrived a little while ago
18:43from the scene of the shooting.
18:45A shooting
18:46the four bandits
18:48killed on the ground
18:49a wounded policeman
18:50one-armed
18:51from a gunshot
18:52he will have it for 15 days.
18:59following this
19:01my collaboration
19:02and following
19:04of the intervention
19:04from the forces
19:05some rubies
19:05in Germignaga
19:08the suspects
19:09by Calabresi
19:11but above all
19:11of my father
19:12they began
19:13to focus on me.
19:18This person
19:20that finally
19:21it was believed
19:22and believed
19:23from the judiciary
19:25he betrayed
19:26not only
19:27the organization
19:29to which he belonged
19:30the Andrangheta
19:31but he betrayed
19:32the blood
19:33of his blood
19:34he betrayed
19:34his father Giacomo
19:36and brought
19:37the carabinieri
19:38that evening
19:39on site
19:41in which
19:41Antonella De Lea
19:42it should have been
19:44become
19:44a hostage
19:45of the Andrangheta
19:46and maybe
19:47brought to Calabria
19:49maybe
19:50in what hiding place.
19:51it was Antonio Zagari
19:53to make fail
19:55an operation
19:56that his father
19:57I had
19:58patiently
19:59organized.
20:03There have been
20:05of the circumstances
20:06that they brought
20:08let's say so
20:09to react
20:10in that way
20:11thanks to the collaboration
20:13by Zagari
20:14if you have arrived
20:16to this
20:17result
20:19let's call him
20:20in quotation marks
20:21result
20:24otherwise
20:25how many others
20:27kidnappings of people
20:27there would have been
20:30in Lombardy?
20:38the country
20:39it was a city
20:42rich
20:43it was a city
20:44Calm
20:45it was a city
20:46that made people talk
20:47of himself
20:48for the successes
20:50of the team
20:50of basketball
20:51the glorious
20:52Innis
20:53and for its industries

21:04weaves the story
21:05economic
21:06with history
21:06of immigration
21:07the big industries
21:09and their related industries
21:10they know from the start
21:11since the 50s
21:12a strong increase
21:13the southerners
21:14that go
21:15to the world
21:15they concentrate
21:16essentially
21:17in three regions
21:18Lombardy
21:19Piedmont
21:20Liguria
21:21the famous
21:21industrial triangle
21:23Milan and Lombardy
21:24at that moment
21:25they had
21:26a development
21:27very important
21:27the industry
21:28but the same
21:30agriculture
21:31he managed to have
21:33the possibility
21:35to take on
21:36these southerners
21:37that came
21:38naturally
21:39there was a problem
21:40when they arrived
21:41the southerners
21:42they needed
21:43of two things
21:43they needed
21:44of houses
21:45and they needed
21:46to eat
21:47and then
21:48the building industry
21:48had
21:49an expansion
21:49huge
21:50and also
21:51agriculture
21:52because there was
21:52to feed
21:53more people
21:53how much
21:54there was some
21:55previously
21:58inside these houses
21:59you put
22:00the southerners
22:01but they ended up
22:02Also
22:02the mafiosi
22:03then the mafiosi
22:04they had the opportunity
22:05to check
22:06the activities
22:08that were happening
22:08in these enormous
22:09large buildings
22:09so you
22:10in fact
22:10you transferred
22:11the mafia
22:13from Sicily
22:14from Calabria
22:14from Campania
22:15in Milan
22:16in Lombardy
22:17in the municipalities
22:17of the Interland
22:18and in the others
22:19two large regions
22:20that I am
22:21Piedmont
22:21and Liguria
22:22this is the effect
22:23of that climate
22:25of those years
22:28I remember
22:29by Zagari
22:29he said
22:30the Andrangheta
22:31comes to the north
22:32the year
22:33of the first festival
22:34from Sanremo
22:35I confess that
22:36in 91-92
22:37I didn't remember
22:38which one it was
22:39I informed myself
22:40that the Revinieri
22:41they told me
22:421951
22:47the law
22:48on the living room
22:48forced
22:49of 1956
22:50establishes
22:51towards
22:52of a person
22:52the obligation
22:53to live
22:53in a location
22:54decided by the judiciary
22:55for a certain period
22:56of time
22:57the end
22:58that's it
22:59to contain
23:00the dangerousness
23:00of subjects
23:01deemed
23:01predisposed
23:02to commit crimes
23:03but in comparison
23:04of which
23:05there is no evidence
23:06for an indictment
23:14these subjects
23:16they began
23:17to take root
23:18Giacomo Zagari
23:21shortly after
23:23that had arrived
23:24in Lombardy
23:25could buy
23:26a house
23:26with 16 rooms
23:28and of the ghettos
23:30of land
23:30environment
23:31could accommodate
23:33could prepare
23:37for a series
23:38of people
23:39hospitality
23:40to commit
23:41crimes
23:42and so on
23:48in 1965
23:50the provision
23:51of compulsory residence
23:53is extended
23:54to the suspects
23:54to belong
23:55to the mafia gangs
23:56conceived
23:57as a tool
23:58to push away
23:58the mafioso
23:59from the lands of origin
24:00the forced stay
24:01had the effect
24:02to transfer
24:03in many areas of Italy
24:04numerous subjects
24:05of unequivocal
24:06mafia origins
24:07and rooted them
24:08in areas
24:09that otherwise
24:09they would perhaps be
24:10remained immune
24:11my father
24:12once
24:13came to Lombardy
24:14create his own group
24:15in Lombardy
24:16Always
24:17Anyway
24:17referring to
24:20to people
24:22superior to him
24:23present in Calabria
24:24he told
24:25that many
24:26big bosses
24:27of that 'ndrangheta
24:28and other mafias
24:28moved to the north
24:30mandatory
24:31they made him arrive
24:32the families
24:34then friends
24:35of families
24:36then friends
24:36some friends
24:37re-establishing
24:38and creating
24:38a network of power
24:39criminal
24:41it infiltrates
24:42understands the territory
24:43it also gets accepted
24:46especially from the elements
24:47that from the point of view
24:49economic
24:49they are relevant
24:50in a certain territory
24:51for example
24:51the entrepreneurs
24:54elements
24:55of the andranca
24:55of the highlights
24:56they also come
24:58somehow
24:59accredited
25:00from entrepreneurs
25:01as subjects
25:02which by determining
25:04a sort
25:05of impunity
25:06or social peace
25:07they manage to keep
25:09far away
25:09from companies
25:10the carabinieri
25:12above all
25:13the guard
25:14of finance
25:16the consistent presence
25:18of Calabrian clans
25:19to the north
25:19it is not due
25:20only to emigration
25:21or to compulsory residence
25:22but he answers
25:23to a specific one
25:24strategic choice
25:25that of sending
25:26on a permanent basis
25:27pieces of the endrine
25:28that is, a part
25:29of the natural family
25:30in the northern regions
25:31allow
25:32solid roots
25:33the gangs
25:35they had
25:36camouflaged
25:37and they were
25:38integrated
25:39in this territory
25:41there were embassies
25:43which were headed
25:44to some characters
25:45who responded
25:47at the controls
25:48of the bosses
25:49that they were
25:50to Africa
25:50in San Luca
25:51to talk
25:53of the andranca
25:55in Lombardy alone
25:57they arrive at least
25:58400 men
25:59of the clubs
26:00that although
26:01cold
26:01and lost
26:02in the Po Valley fogs
26:04they recreate
26:04in this region
26:05just like in Piedmont
26:06Liguria
26:07Emilia Romagna
26:08and Veneto
26:08the same structures
26:09Southern criminals
26:10and there was
26:12something
26:13who had
26:15as if drugged
26:16the collective conscience
26:18Nobody
26:19maybe even
26:20for pride
26:21he could think
26:22that these people
26:23they lived
26:24calmly
26:25between us
26:25it was always said
26:26it's people
26:27that comes from outside
26:28Yes
26:29she had come
26:30from outside
26:31but it was
26:32accommodated
26:33in places
26:34in which
26:35in which it was thought
26:37nothing ever happened
26:57in 74 we were a family
27:00of seven people
27:02five children
27:03mom and dad
27:04a family
27:06very normal
27:07very calm
27:08with many children
27:09noisy
27:09Why
27:10more or less
27:11I also had a little sister
27:13five years old
27:14which revived
27:15let's say
27:15the context
27:16the context
27:19family
27:25Emmanuel Riboli
27:26who was he
27:27who remembers him anymore
27:29a 17-year-old boy
27:30who loved dirt bikes
27:32and who went to school
27:33by bicycle
27:34the riboli
27:36I am a family
27:37Brianza
27:39of those who
27:40once upon a time
27:41they could be defined well
27:44that of the hard workers
27:46they had a small industry
27:48which produced
27:49cabins for tractor-trailers
27:51and for vans
27:52Certainly
27:53they were not great entrepreneurs
27:56my brother
27:57he was riding a motorbike
27:58he did motocross races
27:59and to accompany him
28:01there was this boy
28:03who worked for us
28:04who worked as a mechanic for them
28:06and we used to hang out with him
28:07to then discover
28:09after many years
28:10that right with the person there
28:12was part of
28:12of the criminal gang
28:14who had kidnapped
28:15And
28:16I think he was killed
28:19and we say
28:21I who was worried
28:22but more
28:22about this boy
28:24because for example
28:25I myself
28:26he was commissioned
28:27from my father
28:28and from the other components
28:30Of
28:32me and my brother Enzo
28:33who worked in that life
28:35Of
28:37to follow the moves
28:38of this family
28:39to see
28:39I don't know
28:40for example
28:40how many children were you?
28:42and how many children were there
28:43Meaning what
28:44the movements
28:45what they did
28:46in the car
28:47which ones they actually were
28:48the machines
28:49that they used every day
28:50there were
28:50the ambushers
28:51then we lived
28:52even neighbors
28:52my brother
28:53he was director
28:53he worked in life
28:55so the thing
28:55it wasn't even that much
28:56the applied
28:56we were waiting for him at home
28:58by half past ten
29:00half past ten
29:01he had always been punctual
29:03because at my house
29:04of penalty
29:04there was punctuality
29:06for which passed
29:07very few minutes
29:08it had been generated
29:09in my parents
29:11a certain concern
29:14after half an hour
29:16the concern
29:16has increased
29:17it has become widespread
29:18among us too
29:19say why
29:20he didn't come back
29:20the ele
29:21it's a thing
29:21very strange
29:26we have decided
29:27to take it
29:28rather than
29:28he does motocross
29:29so much now
29:30I started
29:30the school
29:31he will take
29:33there
29:34on the path
29:35that makes you take
29:36his house
29:36when it arrives
29:37with the lung
29:37you enter the bus
29:38he takes the bicycle
29:40At home
29:41on that path
29:42will be seized
29:44does she know where she went to school?
29:46he went to school
29:47the ITIS of Varese
29:48he took evening courses
29:49it seems to me
29:50so he came back late?
29:52Yes
29:52well very late
29:54In short
29:54Very
29:55around 10pm
29:57midnight
29:58Dad called
29:59at the police station
30:00saying
30:00my son
30:01he didn't come back
30:02and I fear
30:04may be
30:05something happened
30:09there have been
30:11Surely
30:11of the aspects
30:12coarse
30:14macroscopic
30:15that they have
30:15marked
30:16the story
30:18by Emanuele Riboli
30:19for example
30:20in the evening
30:21in which Emanuele
30:22he was kidnapped
30:23Pierino Riboli
30:24telephone
30:25to the police
30:26it was promised
30:27which would be
30:28to the state police
30:29it was promised
30:29which would be
30:30a patrol car arrived
30:31the flying squad
30:31it never arrived
30:32and only after
30:34who called
30:35the carabinieri
30:36after about
30:37I think an hour and a half
30:38the carabinieri arrived
30:39and they began
30:40to do the inspections
30:41and the sifting
30:42of the area
30:43with limited forces
30:44that they had available
30:50we at the newspaper
30:51we did
30:53our work
30:54we already have
30:55the closed pages
30:55my boss
30:57of then
30:58I was a young reporter
30:59I was 22 years old
31:01he tells me
31:02Look
31:02go ahead
31:04to the house
31:04of the Riboli
31:05stay there
31:06as long as you can
31:07we the newspaper
31:08we can do it
31:08keep open
31:10before sending it
31:11in rotary
31:12until two o'clock
31:13half past two in the morning
31:14if something happens
31:15call us
31:18I'm convinced
31:20says my boss
31:21that this disappearance
31:22why then
31:23there was no talk yet
31:24of seizure
31:24in person
31:25it will be resolved
31:26in a few hours
31:33around 6 in the morning
31:34it was found
31:35the bicycle
31:36in the garden
31:37from my dad
31:38then they took over
31:39even dogs
31:40the dogs
31:41of the carabinieri
31:41the canine unit
31:43they did it too
31:44of the inspections
31:45to see if
31:46but nothing came out
31:48they found nothing
31:49the bicycle
31:50note with the books
31:52lean next to the bike
31:54I don't remember
31:55if I knew
31:57through country voices
31:59let's say
32:00widespread
32:00in the days immediately
32:02subsequent
32:03or directly
32:04from the local newspaper
32:05from the pre-Alpine
32:06but I remember
32:07that this news
32:08had raised the alarm
32:11not only
32:12the population
32:14of bugugiate
32:15of risers
32:15of the countries
32:16of myth
32:16but in particular
32:17we guys
32:18Why
32:19we felt affected
32:20right in that
32:21who was one of ours
32:22of our members
32:23of our group
32:29Here you are
32:36the first letter arrived
32:38not in our house
32:39but at an uncle's house
32:41a brother of my dad
32:42a written letter
32:44from my brother
32:45where he said
32:46I was kidnapped
32:47if you want to see me again
32:49you have to follow
32:50the instructions
32:51that will be given to you
32:52subsequently
32:53and it started from there
32:55the period
32:56of the letters
32:57with precise instructions
32:58as it was meant to be
33:01treaty
33:01the ransom
33:06they passed
33:07a few months
33:09I seeing
33:10that the boy
33:11he was never released
33:13and that the ransom
33:14by now it had been paid
33:15not that one
33:16that they had asked
33:17At that time
33:17I demand a billion
33:19then they went down
33:20and had a lower figure
33:22not much lower
33:23to the billion
33:23and they were
33:26be careful
33:26with the signers
33:27for that amount
33:28after with her
33:29he had paid
33:30after paid
33:32and he wrote again
33:33that I wanted more money
33:34I wanted more money
33:36And
33:38money I can no longer have
33:39In short
33:40money I can no longer pay
33:42I have nothing left
33:43how much did he pay?
33:45I paid 200
33:46and passes millions
33:49200 million and more
33:50I paid
33:51that there were many
33:53for me?
33:53many, many
33:54for me
33:55I had to impose everything
33:56sell everything
33:57and make me do it
33:59of loans
34:00and I'm still here
34:02to break
34:06think for example
34:08that in the course
34:09of one of the moments
34:11of the negotiation
34:13when now
34:15the Riboli family
34:16cooperated fully
34:18with the carabinieri
34:20the carabinieri suggested
34:22after a request
34:23by
34:24of the kidnappers
34:26to put
34:27waste paper
34:28in a suitcase
34:29That
34:30the suitcase
34:31actually
34:32should have
34:32contain
34:33sums of money
34:39on the highway
34:41according to the instructions
34:42of the kidnappers
34:43was deposited
34:44this suitcase
34:45That
34:47they would have
34:49had to leave
34:50and they left
34:51on the highway
34:52and then they had to
34:53pass the kidnappers
34:54to take
34:55this suitcase
34:55it was done
34:56that passes
34:57an unmarked car
34:59of the carabinieri
35:00And
35:01strangely
35:02pushes
35:03with a wheel
35:04this suitcase
35:05below
35:06of the highway
35:07the kidnappers
35:09they go under
35:10they open the suitcase
35:11and they scrobatic
35:12what is it about
35:12of a trap
35:13if he doesn't ask
35:15seeing that
35:15the boy
35:16there is no release
35:16one day
35:17I remember
35:17on the occasion
35:18of Easter
35:19of 1975
35:20I have always held
35:21my father
35:22he came to visit me
35:23and I asked him
35:25when the boy
35:27he would have been released
35:28I say
35:28but why
35:29things are going on
35:30they will pay
35:31some installments
35:32no he tells me
35:33Look
35:33leaves badly
35:34and says
35:35that one there
35:36it no longer exists
35:37but I say it
35:38as it no longer exists
35:39ninth
35:40it no longer exists
35:41there is no more
35:42and well
35:42he understood that it was
35:44was killed
35:45In short
35:45or that he was dead
35:47he told me
35:48which had been
35:48suppressed
36:08life in our house
36:10it was totally modified
36:12very sad
36:14the view is very closed
36:15because we were always
36:18only
36:19only us
36:19we went out very little
36:21we were looking for
36:22the greatest
36:22they were trying to safeguard
36:24the younger brothers
36:25I took it to school
36:27my sister
36:28I was trying to make
36:30the environment
36:31less
36:31less heavy
36:33but it was expensive
36:34a lot of effort
36:44four children
36:45still to think about
36:46what he does
36:48I have to live
36:49for them
36:51laugh together
36:52still with them
36:52even if I suffer
36:54they don't have to suffer
36:55because they are small
36:57the last six years
37:01and it smells like Emanuele
37:02even the little one
37:04but many times
37:05at night
37:05you dream
37:06and he tells me
37:06Pope
37:07look what I saw
37:07Emanuele arriving home
37:09he picked me up
37:11he took me on the motorbike
37:13then he wakes up
37:14and runs into my bed
37:16because he's afraid
37:18see if he doesn't know
37:19other than knowing it
37:22he knows everything
37:23the biggest regret
37:26until then
37:27it was to say
37:28there is no more
37:29but where did he go?
37:30beyond a hope
37:31That
37:31yes lying
37:33you can grow
37:35but lying
37:36then there is that of desire
37:38to say
37:38ok it went like this
37:40but
37:40we would like to mourn someone
37:43In short
37:43don't have a funeral
37:47it was a matter
37:49of a kidnapping
37:49of people
37:50of a seventeen year old
37:51with the killing
37:54with mode
37:55bloody
37:56painful
37:57let's say
37:59beyond all limits
38:00Therefore
38:01of a fact
38:03very serious
38:04that does not express itself
38:05only
38:06with the word
38:06kidnapping
38:07he went
38:09beyond all limits
38:10reasonable
38:11of treatment
38:13of a human being
38:14I will never stop
38:16to do my research
38:17never
38:18I will never stop
38:22I will look for it
38:23alive dead
38:24I will find it
38:24without anything else
38:27and they will pay
38:29what they did to me
38:31the harm they did to me
38:32they will pay me for it
38:32without anything else
38:33I will never stop
38:34to search
38:35never
38:43that death
38:44despite me
38:45at the time
38:46don't do it to me
38:47so many scruples
38:48to commit
38:49other crimes
38:49let's say
38:50he left me enough
38:52it hit me
38:53because I knew
38:54the boy
38:54he was a boy
38:55young
38:55I myself
38:56I only had
38:57twenty years
38:57at the time
38:58and then
38:59even though it is
39:00inserted
39:00in an environment
39:01in a particular
39:03environment
39:05that fact
39:06I didn't like it
39:08In short
39:08Therefore
39:09then continuing
39:10to commit
39:11crimes
39:11and crimes
39:12of various kinds
39:15I started feeding him
39:16a certain version
39:17towards that guy
39:18of crime
39:19he had the opportunity
39:20to rebuild
39:21in detail
39:22to settle down
39:23of the 'ndrangheta
39:24and other mafias
39:24to the north
39:25Zagri is also
39:26important
39:26because it describes us
39:28the hierarchy
39:29describes us
39:29the degrees
39:30the internal rules
39:31and of course
39:33the activities too
39:34criminals
39:34for which he was the first
39:36to explain
39:36that the 'ndrangheta
39:37to the north
39:37had started
39:38with traffic
39:38of bergamot
39:39because he says
39:40Excuse me
39:40smuggling
39:41of bergamot
39:42he wants to explain to us
39:43but why
39:43for that
39:44that I was told
39:45I am involved in this activity
39:46I have never participated
39:48personally
39:48at the time
39:49I was very young
39:50I know my father
39:51and his friends
39:54they brought bergamot
39:55from Calabria
39:56in certain containers
39:57What is bergamot?
39:59bergamot
39:59it is an essence
40:00the essence
40:00of bergamot
40:01Exactly
40:02it is an essence
40:03that in France
40:05they say it is
40:06essential
40:06or almost
40:07to do
40:08the perfumes
40:09bergamot
40:10it's a herb
40:10which is born
40:11in Calabria?
40:11no it's a tree
40:13from a fruit
40:14like mandarins
40:15small
40:16they are fruits
40:17in short more
40:18it's a citrus fruit
40:20I don't know
40:20I don't know how to define it
40:22Now
40:22and then the smuggling
40:23of cigarettes
40:23then the management
40:24of clandestine gambling dens
40:25then robberies
40:26extortion
40:27all accompanied
40:29from the usury activity
40:30until you get there
40:32to traffic
40:33of narcotics
40:33which becomes
40:34after the kidnappings
40:36in person
40:36the most profitable activity
40:38during the season
40:40of the kidnappings
40:40in person
40:41it was possible to measure
40:42the close relationship
40:43existing
40:44between the endrine
40:44operating in Lombardy
40:45and their mother house
40:47which continued
40:48to stay
40:48in Calabria
40:49it made a huge impression
40:51the fact that people
40:52seized in the north
40:53could cross
40:54the entire peninsula
40:55to be held captive
40:57on the mountains
40:58of the Spromonte
41:00kidnappings
41:02they were the occasion
41:03to describe
41:05a Calabrian crime
41:07like a crime
41:09backward
41:10wild
41:11brutal
41:12and came to light
41:14just this aspect
41:14it was not understood instead
41:16That
41:16to seize
41:18of the people in the north
41:19you had to have
41:21there are people there
41:22of the sentinels
41:23who identified people
41:24who had money
41:25so it means
41:26which were already rooted
41:28in the territory
41:29it wasn't an 'ndrangheta
41:30wild
41:31And
41:33feline only
41:34they were an 'ndrangheta
41:35who was beginning to understand
41:36how the world goes
41:37these mafiosi
41:38they had a capacity
41:40also to address
41:41to people
41:42that they were able
41:43to recycle
41:43and to hide
41:44the money
41:46so backward
41:48it wasn't
41:49at the time
41:50let's say
41:51I remember that
41:52the house
41:54of my parents
41:55it was frequented
41:55by many people
41:56let's say
41:57predominantly
41:58people
41:59of Calabrian origin
42:01belonging
42:01to the organization
42:02Andrangheta
42:03step by step
42:04if the public prosecutor
42:06acquires
42:06the statements
42:07That
42:08at that level
42:09they cannot be
42:10sure release
42:11in one day
42:11in seven days
42:12but in months of work
42:13the minutes
42:14on indication
42:15of the public prosecutor
42:16are analyzed
42:17and they go
42:18to identify
42:20all the points
42:21of reconstruction
42:22historical
42:23of personal relationships
42:24of objective facts
42:25which can be
42:26object of clashes
42:27and she knew
42:28if there were any
42:28at the time
42:30then of his
42:31formal militancy
42:32of the 'ndrangheta
42:33people of rank
42:34superior
42:35to his father
42:35operating
42:36in the same territory
42:37in contiguous territories
42:40but it is
42:41here in the province
42:41of Vesi?
42:42Yes
42:44No
42:44in the province
42:45of Vesi
42:45my father
42:46let's say
42:48at least
42:48with regard to
42:49our group
42:50my father
42:51but
42:51would come
42:52because the speech
42:53that doesn't exist
42:54an absolute leader
42:55of the 'ndrangheta
42:56Certain
42:56and then
42:57my father
42:57he was a boss
42:58local
42:59reported
43:00to our group
43:02the strength
43:03of the 'ndrangheta
43:04is in the
43:04impenetrability
43:05of its own structure
43:06and in strength
43:07of family ties
43:09the bond
43:10of blood
43:10it serves on one side
43:11to protect
43:12the mafia family
43:13on the other
43:14to strengthen
43:14the power
43:15of the gang
43:18the children
43:20of the
43:21angriatristi
43:22the male children
43:24I am by right
43:26considered
43:27young
43:28of honor
43:28and then
43:29one being
43:30a real one
43:31load
43:32Therefore
43:32one being
43:34still officially
43:35affiliates
43:36I am however
43:37already considered
43:38those belonging
43:39to the 'ndrangheta
43:40so they are considered
43:41young men of honor
43:56the natural family
43:58of the boss
43:58it's the heart
43:59around which
44:00rotate the structure
44:01internal
44:01of the Andrina
44:02or gang
44:11when I was a kid
44:12I was also fascinated
44:13from them
44:13because they were people
44:14who had availability
44:16of money
44:16they had
44:16let's say
44:17gentle ways
44:19they were very
44:20seemingly affectionate
44:22even with us children
44:23with me
44:23with my brothers
44:26and then
44:26I saw that my father
44:27he thought highly of
44:28these people
44:29and my father himself
44:30he was highly esteemed
44:31from them
44:31In short
44:32it was an environment
44:32That
44:33in a certain way
44:34of sight
44:34it fascinated me a lot
44:49that report
44:51very long
44:52of the switch
44:53by Zagari
44:54it was a stone
44:55milestone
44:55I allow myself to say
44:56important
44:57Also
44:58currently
44:59important
45:00think about it
45:01That
45:01the prosecutor's office
45:02from Reggio Calabria
45:03in requesting
45:05and the judge
45:06for the investigations
45:07preliminari
45:07in issuing
45:08a provision
45:09restrictive
45:09to describe
45:11the andrangata
45:12the internal degrees
45:13and the dynamics
45:13I'm talking about a few years ago
45:15has exactly
45:16reported
45:17the statements
45:17by Zagari
45:18which were
45:18of a precision
45:19impressive
45:20this was the importance
45:21of that collaborator
45:22died later
45:23in a street fire
45:25not very many years ago
45:3625 years ago
45:38in the province
45:39from Varese
45:39a boy
45:4017 years old
45:41he was kidnapped
45:42and killed
45:43from the 'ndrangheta
45:43since then
45:44the family
45:45awaits justice
45:46but the authors
45:47of the kidnapping
45:48they could instead
45:49to return to freedom
45:51for effective date
45:52of the terms
45:52Truly
45:53I had great
45:54embarrassment
45:55to have formulated
45:57a request
45:57of procedure
45:59of prescription
46:01of this serious
46:01crime
46:02and I put myself
46:04even in the clothes
46:06of the sister
46:08of the father
46:09of the mother
46:10of Riboli
46:11that they would have learned
46:13this news
46:14on the radio
46:14for television
46:15it would have been
46:16a further one
46:17how to say
46:19knowledge
46:20of the news
46:21a second death
46:22by Emanuele
46:22of Riboli
46:28there would be knowledge
46:29unless you do
46:30a burial
46:31adequate
46:31unless you can
46:33bring
46:33a bunch
46:34of flowers
46:34on his grave
46:39the idea came to me
46:41to hire me
46:41a responsibility
46:43that wasn't mine
46:43practically
46:45and I had it given to me
46:47from the police
46:48the number
46:48by phone
46:49of the family
46:51Riboli
46:52and I called
46:53to the family
46:54Riboli
46:55I said
46:57this afternoon
46:58I will ask for the solution
46:59for the kidnappers
47:00of your son
47:01I wanted to ask you
47:02pardon
47:03because of this
47:05by
47:05of many
47:07that they should have
47:08to do it
47:08and they didn't do it
47:09anger
47:11I have some to sell
47:12so much anger
47:14but
47:14I liked it
47:16that the judge
47:17and he apologized
47:18in the afternoon
47:19then he made the indictment
47:20I'm looking forward to it
47:21the indictment
47:22I still have it
47:23he said exactly
47:25Italian justice
47:27that here
47:28I humbly represent
47:29he must apologize
47:30to parents
47:31by Emanuele Riboli
47:33because if the criminals
47:34who kidnapped him
47:35they will be acquitted
47:36and free yourself
47:37it's not your fault
47:38of destiny
47:39an incredible series
47:41of errors
47:41of superficiality
47:42of omissions
47:43by the State
47:44allowed
47:46that for years
47:46the kidnappers
47:47by Emanuele Riboli
47:48remained unknown
47:50and then he did
47:51in a way
47:52that the accusation
47:52against them
47:53can be cancelled
47:55by prescription
48:06Antonio Zagari
48:07I know him
48:09of fame
48:11for the arrests
48:13which he suffered
48:14for his raids
48:15for the suspects
48:16about him
48:17but I know him
48:20personally
48:20and incredibly
48:22in prison
48:23from Varese
48:24where he
48:28he is detained
48:29and where I
48:31I am authorized
48:33to meet him
48:34at my request
48:35although he
48:36in that period
48:37is
48:38in isolation
48:39and I never understood
48:41Why
48:41this authorization
48:43I am granted
48:50in this meeting
48:52him
48:52he introduces himself
48:53handing me over
48:54the drafts
48:56of this book
48:58that he wrote
48:59and then
49:00it has been published
49:01and would have titled
49:02Killing is tiring
49:03which is really
49:04the paradigm
49:05the synthesis
49:06of that
49:06that to him
49:07it happened
49:13and when I read
49:15these drafts
49:16I get the shivers
49:17why in these drafts
49:19in these sheets
49:20in this writing
49:23meticulous
49:24precise
49:24in this syntax
49:27I have to say
49:27perfect
49:28for someone who is found
49:30behind bars
49:32for having done
49:34the criminal
49:34for twenty years
49:35there are names
49:38surnames
49:39of the
49:40defendants
49:41of Happy Island
49:42that is, the characters
49:43that months later
49:45they would have been arrested
49:51I kept that file
49:53in a drawer
49:54that every time
49:55that my wife
49:55opened
49:56he closed it again
49:59Really
50:00with fear
50:01and with terror
50:01we were
50:02young
50:03we were
50:03small children
50:05for home
50:05I had
50:07let's say so
50:08the diligence
50:09to keep
50:10far away
50:11the temptation
50:11to publish
50:13that dossier
50:14I would have ruined
50:15the investigation
50:17we won't be here
50:19to tell
50:19this story
50:20but that's a whole other story
50:46for the cake another story
50:48of hero
50:48we won't be here
51:08to tell
51:09the clap
51:09but that's a whole other story
51:11Thank you all.
51:52Thank you all.
52:11Thank you all.
