03:26we transform lives.
03:28And now, here's your guide through it all. Entrepreneur, mentor, and financial coach, Laren Gaines.
03:47What's going on, good people? How you doing out there? Welcome, welcome, welcome on in.
03:55Welcome in to Reading Between the Wines. This is going to be a great show tonight. I just have to
04:03say, this is going to be an amazing show tonight because I am all the way up. I am ready
04:08to do this thing.
04:11Before we go ahead and get started, I have to give a very special thank you to the producer.
04:18Thank you, sir. I want to thank God for giving me another opportunity to come out here and give you
04:23the, I was about to say the 401 podcast, give you the Reading Between the Wines episode.
04:31And I want to say, thank you so much to all of y'all rocking out there with me. I
04:36want to say good morning to all y'all, especially y'all out there on Facebook. I see you.
04:41Thank you. Thank you all so much. And please continue to like, comment, share, subscribe, tag a friend, text a
04:50friend, do whatever you need to do to continue to level of support.
04:54And I just want to say thank you all so much. I appreciate all of y'all.
05:28Birdman 313 coming in. We might have some surprises for y'all as well. So stick around, stick around.
05:35So we're talking about Borrow Peace. I'm going to get into this buy now, pay later, this short-term financing,
05:42all of this crazy stuff that people do.
05:45And they think that it's the hottest thing to do now because you can get it now, but you buy
05:52now.
05:53Oh, trust and believe you're going to pay later. So I'm going to speak about that.
05:58Um, I got some wine sign, some fit vine. So there's this line of wine that focuses on physical fitness,
06:11making sure you don't really, you know, blow your calorie budget.
06:17And it has zero sugar. So I'm curious to see what this is going to taste like. Zero sugar, gluten
06:25-free.
06:28So we're going to see tonight. So fit vine. I am sampling their red blend version.
06:35So yeah, can't wait. Can't wait. I will tell you that it smells amazing.
06:42So let's see if the smell matches up with the taste.
06:50So yeah, it's time. It's time for my favorite segment.
06:57Song of the day.
07:09Okay. So 12 years old, 1992, this group comes out and explodes the charts.
07:23Out of control. I believe that every single song, every single song, but it felt like every single song became
07:34a single.
07:34And, you know, this is around a time when videos are out and, you know, you wait for it to
07:41come on a radio because you really didn't have the cassette tape.
07:45Or the CDs weren't really, they were coming in, but they weren't really that.
07:50It was more cassette tapes at this moment.
07:54SW week. So, you know, we remix it.
07:57And I was thinking about this journey. I was thinking about where I'm at in life.
08:02And although we sometimes put on these layers, we put on this armor and we appear to be strong, sometimes
08:17we can be weak.
08:18At the same moment that we are appearing to be strong, deep down inside, sometimes we could be weak.
08:25And there are certain things that will tempt us to move into the fleshly spirit, to the fleshly realm that
08:36makes us weak.
08:38So I want you to think about your own life.
08:41I want you to think about your situations.
08:46And think, what is that one thing?
08:50What are those couple things?
08:52You will want to hope and pray that it's only one thing.
08:55But for some of us, it might be a couple things.
08:57It might be a few things that gets us so weak in the knees that we can hardly speak.
09:03And we lose all control.
09:05And when we lose control, we end up doing some things that we don't want to do.
09:09We end up waking up the next day feeling regretful and feeling sad because we let our flesh get the
09:18best of us.
09:20Is it that binge watching that you do that gets you so weak and you're stuck and you're glued in
09:29front of the TV for hours on end?
09:32Or do you do a lot of social media scrolling and you were just going to go ahead and check
09:38one, two, three different pages and next thing you know, you look up and you've been scrolling on your phone
09:47for hours on end and half the day is gone.
09:51Is it that every single time you hang out with X, Y, and Z, you prepare and you tell yourself
09:58that you're not going to take it there, that you're not going to go there, but yet the next day
10:03you wake up feeling sad and regretful?
10:08I don't know who I'm speaking to.
10:10I'm only speaking from real life experiences, things that I've been through.
10:13But I will tell you that once you decide to switch things up and change things up and be strong,
10:20lose the pride because first comes pride, then comes destruction.
10:28Several times I've told myself, Laren, oh, you really killed that.
10:34You did that, son.
10:36Oh, we on top.
10:37And then the minute that you puff yourself up like that and you think that you are doing something, there
10:45comes the temptation directly afterwards.
10:47So what I've learned, again, still a work in progress, but what I've learned is that when that pride comes
10:58up, when that ego comes up,
11:00when you accomplish whatever goals you set out to accomplish and you feel them really good, that's when it's time
11:08to pray.
11:10That's when it's time to pray.
11:13Because temptation is always knocking at your back door, always knocking to try to remind you of where you've come
11:23from.
11:25And to make you feel that being in the fleshly realm is better than being in the spiritual realm.
11:36Song of the day.
11:39Week 1992 SWVC.
11:43Some of us are weak when it comes to the financial aspect of things because we say that we are
11:49going to save.
11:50We say that we are going to go ahead and set ourselves up for success.
11:55But then the fleshly, the earthly side of us starts to kick in.
12:01And now we have to buy this.
12:02We have to go there.
12:03We have to do this.
12:04We have to do that.
12:08Weak SWV.
12:11But one thing, one of my favorite scriptures, 2 Corinthians.
12:18For when I am weak, I am strong.
12:20So for those of you out there that you might have had some weak moments, you might have had some
12:26tests,
12:27and maybe you didn't pass the test the first time, and you're going through some more trials,
12:32just know that if you fall down, you can get back up again.
12:38Know that for when I am weak, I am strong.
12:41The weak moments, when you fall down, when you get back up, and you stay on path,
12:47and you know what you're doing, and you put your trust in the most high,
12:54you'll get catapulted to higher heights, newer situations, found strength.
13:02It's okay if you have some weak moments.
13:05It's okay if you are tested.
13:08It's okay if you're tried because we're human.
13:11But just know that after that test, after that trial, there comes strength.
13:16There comes power.
13:18There comes energy.
13:21There comes vitality.
13:23Yeah.
13:25We ready to do this here.
13:27I'm ready for this.
13:30All right, so now, the moment, let's go ahead and get this show on the road.
13:36We're going to go ahead and bring in my friend, family to the show, author, poet, Birdman, 313.
13:58What's going on?
13:59What's going on?
14:00How you doing?
14:01Hey, how's it going, man?
14:03I'm doing good.
14:04I'm doing good.
14:05I'm in rare mode tonight.
14:06I'm doing good.
14:08That's good.
14:09I'm doing okay.
14:11Doing okay.
14:12That's what's up.
14:13So, I will tell you that I did say it was like 89 last week, right, when we spoke?
14:21Yeah.
14:22Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
14:23More like 59 today.
14:28Hey, don't feel bad, man.
14:30Yesterday, it was like in the 50s.
14:35Go out today, man.
14:37Didn't have to wear nothing, you know.
14:39It was like 74, 75, something like that.
14:43I'm like, man, the difference that they make.
14:47Yeah, that's something else.
14:49Yeah, but that's been happening here because we've been having a lot of rain.
14:53Been a lot of rain coming this way.
14:56Matter of fact, I went for a walk.
14:59You know, I tried to get that little walk in or I do my little exercise machine.
15:04And when we got back from the store, I took me a little walk, 10-minute, 15-minute walk.
15:12And I mean, all of a sudden, I'm sitting here.
15:17I'm getting ready to go take a shower.
15:18And I thought Diana had turned the shower on, but it was outside, man.
15:24Oh, yeah.
15:26Yeah, it was pouring down.
15:28So, you know.
15:31Eh, you know it is what it is with this weather.
15:33I'm sort of just over it at this moment.
15:37I'll go with the flow.
15:38Who knows?
15:39Monday was horrible.
15:40What choice do you have?
15:43You know, what choice do you really have?
15:45You know, you're right.
15:46You're right.
15:47It was crazy and windy.
15:49What was it, yesterday or the day before?
15:52Whatever it was, I was like, I ain't even going outside for a walk.
15:55I'm over it.
15:55It was craziness.
15:57Yeah, I heard that.
16:00Now, you know, I just realized that I didn't even do my wine sampling.
16:05I sat here and spoke about it, but I ain't sample it.
16:08So, I'm going to have to do that, of course, to get to show on the road the right way.
16:14I just got so amped up in the intro that I forgot all about it.
16:17But, so, did you release the book?
16:22No, it's just now getting published.
16:27Okay.
16:27So, no, I don't even have copies yet.
16:30It's just now going through, you know, so.
16:33Well, keep me posted on that because, you know, we want to definitely highlight that and celebrate.
16:39Right, so.
16:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:40Oh, yeah.
16:41And whenever you get a chance, just send me your address so I can get you a copy also.
16:49Okay.
16:50No problem.
16:50No problem.
16:51I've got to send you something as well, too.
16:52So.
16:53All right.
16:55So, well, you're going to do the wine tasting with me.
16:57Normally, I roll solo on this, but I got this wine called Fit Vine.
17:03Fit Vine.
17:04So, this is Red Blend, and it's zero sugar.
17:07So, for people out there who need to watch their sugar intake, I recommend this full flavor, gluten-free, gluten
17:15-free.
17:16And this is a good 13.5%.
17:20So, it says, keep up with us.
17:22It got a picture of a dude running with grapes in his hand and a glass, a wine glass.
17:28And it says, Fit Vine was born with friends who got together to make wines that fit into their active
17:37lifestyles with rich flavor and zero sugar.
17:40Fit Vine won't hold you back.
17:43If you're looking for a wine that champions the way you want to live your life, crushing it at work,
17:49at the gym, or whatever life takes you, drink with us.
17:53So, for people who want to control the calorie intake, this has about 121 calories per five ounces.
18:02I'd say go ahead and try this.
18:04So, I want to say cheers.
18:06Thank you, Birdman, for joining in every week.
18:09Thank you, everybody out there for tuning in to the show.
18:13Thank you for having me, man.
18:16No problem.
18:17No problem.
18:19This is a great, as always.
18:23You're a family to the show.
18:24And I'm going to say cheers.
18:31So, Birdman, what do you think of the wine?
18:34How does it taste?
18:35It tastes good, man.
18:38It tastes good, man.
18:41Yeah, you know, it tastes good, man.
18:45It goes down smooth.
18:47I said good.
18:48It's good.
18:48Yes, yes, yes.
18:51All right.
18:55Money Hacks.
18:57You ready?
18:58You got a number for us?
19:02Yeah.
19:03See, you know what?
19:04I was sitting here thinking.
19:05I'm like, well, he going with 26 tonight.
19:08I'm going to go with 26.
19:11All right.
19:12Let's see what we got with 26 here.
19:1726.
19:19Oh.
19:22We got.
19:23Hmm.
19:25I got a choice here.
19:27All right.
19:27I'm going to go with the first one.
19:28Go with my first instinct.
19:32Do use cash and debit cards.
19:35Pay as you go is the way to go as far as I'm concerned.
19:39You can't get into debt if you only spend the cash you have.
19:43Walking around with a lot of cash can be impractical.
19:47A debit card that is tied to a checking account that you only keep a small amount of money in
19:55or prepaid debit card is a great way to restrict your spending to what you truly can afford.
20:03An important caveat, as mentioned earlier, is I also and you have that you use a few times a month
20:12and make sure that you pay the bill in full.
20:15This will help make sure that you build a strong credit score.
20:21So what do you think about that, Birdman?
20:23Oh, yeah.
20:24Hey, man, it's not it's not safe to carry cash no more.
20:29I know down here, man, you know, here in Houston.
20:33It's not safe at all, dude.
20:35I mean, you never know who people on the corner or, you know, or, you know, up in the tree
20:41or, you know, and, you know, I know people laugh when you say that.
20:44But, hey, man, people have been sitting up in trees waiting for people to go to the teller machines and
20:52jump it down and robbing them, man.
20:54So, hey, when I say trees, it's not it's not no joke, man.
20:58You know, it's real.
21:00So what reminds me of S.O.S. talks about shout out to S.O.S.
21:04I spoke to her this past week, but she calls it tree boxing.
21:11And that's basically what it is when people are, you know, looking down and checking out.
21:18They act like they ain't really feeling you, but they tree boxing, they stalking, they looking, they hawking.
21:23So, yeah, it's interesting that you gave that scenario of the tree.
21:30But it's really like that up in trees.
21:33Yeah, up in trees, man.
21:36That is.
21:38That's craziness.
21:40You know, or hiding behind a parked vehicle.
21:43I mean, it's just it's really mad madness down here, you know, and, you know, going to an outside teller
21:53machine is really not safe.
21:57You know, like when we like when we go, you know, I'm always sitting close, close by.
22:05So when Diana go up, I'm looking around, man.
22:08You think I'm the chick from the exorcist, man.
22:10My head is steady twirling around.
22:12I'm just I'm just watching because, you know, man, people people really like I sit down here.
22:20You don't know where they coming from.
22:23Well, and that's crazy, too, because you can go inside the ones that lock behind you.
22:29And that's the setup.
22:30That's the setup, too, because you all enclosed in the glass.
22:34They see you in there.
22:35What you think is going to happen when you come out?
22:38Exactly.
22:39But a lot of banks down here have security guards or policemen.
22:43They have they have armed armed security.
22:46Put it like that.
22:49Yeah, I agree.
22:50Carrying cash nowadays is something else, but it boils down to basically spend what you have.
22:59So, yeah, it's better off that.
23:02For people who can't control if they have impulsive instincts and they can't control the way they spend money, then
23:11go with a debit card.
23:13Yeah.
23:14Oh, yeah.
23:14The debit card is less, you know, it's not that all that clutter either.
23:19You know, it's just a card.
23:20You have if you no matter where you carry that, like I always take my eyes out my wallet when
23:26I go into the bank and I just take the card with me.
23:28You know, if I do it that way, I don't pull out my wallet out in the open because that's
23:37that's another thing they're looking for, too.
23:39So I always I always make sure my money is in my pocket.
23:43My card is in my pocket when I walk out.
23:47And here's one thing to be very cautious as well.
23:51So spend what you have to keep the idea behind it.
23:56Yeah, because there are certain things called fees.
23:59So even though you have a card, it might have a visa slash debit on it.
24:05And sometimes in some cases you can overspend, even though you don't have it in a bank.
24:10And that's where the overdraft fees come in.
24:13And that's where you get, you know, in a situation as well.
24:19But then we have some places down here that you can only pay with cash.
24:25And we have other places where they only accept debit cards.
24:30So we try to find the ones where, you know, it depends on where we're going.
24:36Like, it's this fish place we go to, they don't take debit cards.
24:41It's all cash.
24:43Another spot we go to, all they accept is is debit cards.
24:49So be careful.
24:51Well, not be careful because what can you do?
24:53But I'm wondering when the day is going to come when you go to a certain spot and they only
25:01accept cryptocurrency.
25:03Oh, yeah, I know.
25:05Hey, man, don't say that out loud.
25:07Because, yeah.
25:09Yes, man, y'all.
25:11But when that day happens, I'm going to be sitting right here on this podcast and I'm going to say
25:18I told you so.
25:19Because there's so many people that don't believe that cryptocurrency is a thing.
25:25And I'm just waiting for the day where I can say I told you so.
25:31Well, you know, there's places that, you know, because, you know, I do a lot of writing, you know, especially
25:36poetry and stuff.
25:38There's some places that if you do a, if you use AI, they won't accept it.
25:45Matter of fact, KDP, when I did my book, when I did my book, that was the question.
25:50I had to answer whether any part of my book was AI.
25:57And, you know, I just put no because I don't use AI.
26:01Like, I'm the type of person, I like to show my talent, whether it's bad or not.
26:08But anything I create, I want people to know I created.
26:12I didn't have some machine or whatever you want to call it doing anything for me.
26:20Yeah, that's going to be, that'll be a topic for another show.
26:25Yeah, yeah.
26:27You can't escape it.
26:28It's here already.
26:29It's a wrap.
26:30Yes, it is.
26:31Yes, it is.
26:34All right.
26:36So, all right, let's get into tonight's assignment.
26:41We going all the way to Jacksonville, Florida.
26:44Yes.
26:45I'm sure they got some nice weather down there.
26:50So, Ms. Renee, we going to help out Ms. Renee.
26:53Renee says, I told myself installment payments were helping me budget.
26:59It's only four payments.
27:01That's what I kept saying.
27:03Clothes, home items, a mattress, even concert tickets.
27:07Nothing felt irresponsible because the payments look small, manageable, and almost harmless.
27:13But now, I've got due dates scattered all over the month, money leaving my account before I can even remember
27:21what I bought.
27:21It feels like my paycheck arrived already divided.
27:25What scares me is I used these payment plans to feel less stressed.
27:30I told myself I was creating flexibility.
27:33But if I'm honest, I was borrowing peace.
27:37I was using delayed consequences to avoid immediate discomfort.
27:42And now, the discomfort is everywhere.
27:45I've got regular bills, old debt I'm still paying down, and now these little people are on the top of
27:51each other like they don't count.
27:54But they do count, but they do count.
27:55I feel them.
27:56I don't think I was trying to live above my means.
28:00I think I was trying to make life feel lighter.
28:04How do you tell the difference between using a tool wisely and using a tool to justify what you can't
28:10currently afford?
28:12Renee, what do you have for Renee?
28:15Renee, you know, that's something I had to sit back and think of because I've been in that situation before
28:24many times.
28:26Probably still in that situation.
28:29But, you know, as long as you live, you're going to have bills.
28:33I don't care if you're a millionaire or a billionaire.
28:37You're going to have bills.
28:39You're not going to live nowhere free without anything.
28:46And that's just something that a lot of people don't seem to understand.
28:51You know, I tell my kids all the time.
28:53I say, hey, man, I said, nothing in this world is free.
28:57Absolutely nothing.
28:58I said, so, you know, get used to it and, hey, man, just be careful how you spend.
29:09And that's the thing that most of us lose control of, of how many items that we go out because,
29:17you know, we go out, we buy things, then we start paying it.
29:23And then sometimes when we pay it off, then what do we do?
29:28We go buy something else.
29:30And you have a payment plan.
29:33And so you're always going to be in that cycle of doing it unless you just pay cash for whatever
29:40it is.
29:42Then you don't have to worry about having a bill.
29:47And everybody can't pay cash because most of us, and I even include myself, we're living from paycheck to paycheck.
30:00You know, the thing with paying cash, you can't pay cash on online.
30:07See, this is where this is where the setup is because, see, you can't pay cash online.
30:12So in order to do Amazon Prime, do any of these things, you have to have it linked to a
30:21debit card, credit card.
30:27And with that said, that's where the buy now pay later comes into play because you already have a card
30:33hooked up to it.
30:34You already have something hooked up to it.
30:37And that's the situation right there.
30:41And you know what else?
30:42I'm going to tell you something else, because I got in trouble with this many times.
30:46You know, back, you know, I don't know if it's like that now, but I know like back in the
30:5380s and the 90s or somewhere, you know, during that era, they had, you know, these like Rent-A-Center.
31:02And you can go there and get you, you know, go there and you can, you get you, you know,
31:07a whole apartment or house full of furniture.
31:10You can go get all that.
31:12And you had a weekly or however you want to pay it.
31:17Payment.
31:18What wasn't with them?
31:19It was like weekly or biweekly.
31:22Right.
31:22They did something to where they tapped that account more than just once a month.
31:27Yeah.
31:27Right.
31:28And, you know, the thing about it is once you paid that off and you say, you know, like, you
31:36know how you go and you fill out application and say, what have you paid off?
31:42You can't even use them.
31:44But if they come and repossess their whatever it is you got, that goes against your credit.
31:52Oh, so you can't use it that you paid it off.
31:55But if they get repossessed, then that goes against your credit.
32:00Exactly.
32:01Yeah.
32:01Because that happened to me.
32:02It was a situation where my sister put me in a bad situation.
32:07I didn't know nothing about it.
32:09I'm at work and, you know, her and her then husband, boyfriend, whatever he was, you know, they got in
32:17some things that I wasn't even aware of.
32:20And I had to move.
32:23And I come home and, man, you know, they, whoever it was they had it in for, hey, man, they
32:31took my stereo.
32:33They busted my waterbed.
32:35The floor was all, I mean, they just ruined my place, man.
32:39I had to move out and, you know, they took my TV, my stereo.
32:47And so I went to the rental center and I told them what was up and they said, you still
32:51responsible to pay us.
32:55You know, just like that.
32:57And I said, but I don't, they said, that ain't, that ain't my problem.
33:00That ain't our problem.
33:02Yeah.
33:03That's something else.
33:05Yeah.
33:06Wow.
33:06That's interesting.
33:08And, you know, something about them too.
33:12At what point do they say, you know what?
33:14You paid so much on it.
33:16We're not coming to repossess it anymore.
33:18Let's say you got.
33:20Okay.
33:20So if you got, if you got two or three payments left, you had that furniture for years.
33:27Because first of all, that's another scam they have to, I'm not going to say that it's a scam, but
33:32it keeps certain groups of people stuck.
33:36And I'll say that again.
33:37It's not a scam, but it keeps certain groups of people stuck.
33:41For example, if you're buying a piece of furniture that costs $1,000 in the store, if you go to
33:48one of these companies that we're speaking about, what you would have paid $1,000 for if you paid in
33:55cash, because you went to them and you went through their system, now you're going to pay $1,500.
33:59So in any case, you're paying more money than what you normally would have is if you outright bought it.
34:07So it's like the buy now, pay later is the same situation.
34:11It's Rent-A-Center and all of these other places, but it's 2.5 or 2.0.
34:17It's an upgraded version.
34:18It's an online, it's a digital version.
34:21So my question is, if you have three payments left and you've had that furniture for five years, you done
34:28slept in it, you done messed it up, the kids done tore up the bunk beds, whatever the case may
34:33be, you got two single payments left.
34:36Do they just hound you and say, I need my money or do they come and still get it?
34:42Oh, they'll come back and get it.
34:44After all of them years, you had it for five years, you struggled to pay it off?
34:49Yeah.
34:50Because, yeah, you sign a contract.
34:53That's the thing.
34:54See, a lot of people don't know when you sign that contract, that means you pay that contract off.
35:03Yeah.
35:04Yeah.
35:05You sign a contract and, you know, it'll say maybe they'll say, well, it should take you, you know, 18
35:17months or 36 months.
35:20And, you know, you went to a normal, and I always say normal, but you could have went to a
35:27regular store and you could have got that furniture, but if you had got it, you would have to have
35:33put it in a layaway and you would have to pay it off before you could get it to your
35:38house.
35:40Right.
35:40Right.
35:41Right.
36:08That's the thing.
36:08They trick you.
36:09They trick you.
36:10Yeah.
36:10But they always say, oh, you know, they say, oh, you don't have to put no money down and we'll
36:19get you in a vehicle.
36:20I got caught up like that in one, in a vehicle like that.
36:23And, you know, I was like, really?
36:25It was like, yeah.
36:26I'm like, oh, man.
36:27I jumped on it.
36:29So, you know, a couple more people went out to the, to the same dealership.
36:35And, and then this one guy, he said, man, you know what?
36:38I just realized.
36:40And it was like, what?
36:41He said, the payment at the end, you got to pay six months.
36:49You know, really it's extended for six months.
36:53The payments extended for six months.
36:55And a lot of people don't know it because people are trying, you know, trying to, you know, you're in
37:00the big city, like being in a big city, you know, you know, riding the bus all the time is
37:06not really very friendly.
37:09Most of the time it's crazy.
37:11So if you want, you know, you want your own transportation, that's how they was getting a lot of people
37:18to get in vehicles.
37:20He said, oh, you don't have to pay nothing now.
37:22You don't have six months of no payment, but yes, you do.
37:26You're going to have to pay that six months at the, at the end of the contract.
37:33That's no good.
37:35I have a question for you for, and this is for everybody out there.
37:39I know you've been through some of my classes and things like that.
37:44So is a car, since we own a car situation here, is a car an asset or is it a
37:51liability?
37:54I say both.
37:56Okay.
37:57That's just me.
37:58I say both because I said, oh, it's an asset because every nowadays, everybody needs a vehicle.
38:08But it also can be a liability because when it breaks down, you know, you got to get that car
38:16fixed.
38:18Exactly.
38:19Now, I'm going to tell you what the difference is between an asset and liability.
38:24So an asset is something that brings money in to you.
38:30It brings money towards you on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual basis.
38:40A liability is the exact opposite.
38:43It's something that takes money away from you on a weekly, a monthly, a quarterly, or annual basis.
38:54So a car is actually a liability, just like your home is a liability.
39:02And you know what?
39:03A lot of people, they use their vehicles, you know, like because now, you know, you got Uber and Lyft.
39:09A lot of people use their vehicles for work, you know, for, yeah, work.
39:15I say work, you know, a person has a truck and, you know, because I know a lot of people
39:21say, oh, man, it's best to get a truck because you can make money with a truck.
39:25But when the truck break down, you can't make no money.
39:29Yeah.
39:29You know, and that's why I said to me, to me, it's both because of the fact is.
39:36I get it.
39:37Yeah.
39:38When it breaks down and, you know, you don't have no other transportation, then you got to save your money
39:49up to still pay the car note or truck note.
39:53But you also got to get it fixed.
39:56And the other, the other, and the, hey, trust me, the other bills don't stop just because your vehicle stopped.
40:04Now that we're on a vehicle situation, because I got a lot to say about this.
40:10This is what I have to say to the people who run out and buy brand new cars.
40:14Now, if you buy a car, it's up to you.
40:17If you want to buy a brand new car, it's up to you as well.
40:21But what I would have to say is that it's best if you pay it in full.
40:27There's no buy now, pay later, like what we're speaking about today.
40:30But for the people who go out and finance cars on top of cars and on top of cars, and
40:36you're basically accumulating consumer debt, this is what I have to say to that.
40:48Game over.
40:49Game over.
40:49You're already losing the game.
40:52Okay.
40:52Can I say something?
40:53I'm glad you said that because I know you remember the time I told you I went and paid cash
41:00for a vehicle.
41:02Well, my dad, I was with my dad, you know, my dad, you know, he worked for General Motors.
41:07So anywhere, anybody that sold General Motors, they got a discount.
41:10So we went to, we actually went to this dealership.
41:14It was a deal, you know, it was a legitimate dealership.
41:19And so then I wrote to check out.
41:23And, you know, the guy was all happy.
41:26He said, are you paying?
41:26I said, I'm paying cash, man.
41:28He said, okay.
41:29And it wasn't no brand new vehicle, but it was me and my dad, we test drove it.
41:34And he said, oh, this is pretty good.
41:36So when we got back to the dealership after test driving it, the owner came in and he said, no,
41:47I'm not accepting this cash out.
41:51He said, I need money every two weeks, just like that, or a month of it.
41:57He said, that's how I run my place.
41:59My dad said, okay.
42:01My dad said, okay.
42:02He said, I, you know, I retired from Oldsmobile, blah, blah, blah.
42:05And he said, I don't care.
42:07I don't accept that either.
42:08My dad said, okay, then you don't accept that.
42:11You don't accept our business or our money.
42:13Come on, let's go.
42:14Just like that.
42:16And you know what?
42:17A few years later, that dealership was no longer there.
42:22Yeah, because they were trying to get people stuck in the system, stuck on the game, stuck on that buy
42:28now, pay later, because they could stretch it out over a period of time.
42:32And then guess what happens?
42:34If you buy that used car stretched out over a period of time, we know full well that somebody owned
42:41it before.
42:42And if it's not brand new, there's going to be more wear and tear on it.
42:46And if the car breaks down midway through you paying them off, if you're already paying payments like that on
42:55a biweekly basis, they know that a lot of people do that when their credit is not where it needs
43:03to be and their financial situation is not where it needs to be.
43:06So you go back to them and you tell them your sad story and they say, oh, don't worry.
43:12We'll just roll it over into the next car.
43:15Yeah, you'll be fine.
43:17Just continue to keep paying me the money, you know, biweekly.
43:22And your payments might only go up $25 every time or $50 and you can drive it with a new
43:30car.
43:30And it just extends it in the same situation, keeps going on and on and on and on again.
43:35And then they got a customer literally for life.
43:39Exactly.
43:41Wow.
43:42But, you know, I and I always say this young lady, she she just is like this.
43:50She's you could tell that she's living from paycheck to paycheck by the way she's talking.
43:56And, you know, really, even if she was a millionaire, she would always have some time because she would have
44:03a bill because I'm quite sure she wouldn't be cleaning her own house or cutting her own grass.
44:09She would have maintenance people doing that for.
44:13Yeah.
44:14And, you know, she'll have vehicles and the vehicles will break down or they need they just need, you know,
44:21that that that six months maintenance.
44:24So.
44:26It's no way out of it because you can't live.
44:30Like I always said, my dad, the one taught me that he said, you can't live nowhere free.
44:35He said, when you find that place, he said, you come and get me.
44:43Don't tell nobody else.
44:45Just come and get me.
44:46And he said and he said, but and he and I always, I always spoke that to my boys.
44:52Hey, man.
44:54I said, no, man, you're going to pay some kind of way.
44:58Spiritually.
44:59You can't live nowhere free.
45:02You're going to pay spiritually, mentally, physically, financially or emotionally one type of way.
45:07Ain't nothing in life free.
45:09Exactly.
45:11Wow.
45:13And, you know, most people, you know, that's the sad part, because you have some of these people that want
45:20to live in a nice place.
45:21And if they stay there too long, then they start seeing the neighborhood breaking down and the neighborhood go to
45:32changing and they can't move out because of that.
45:43Oh, I know exactly what you mean now.
45:45Mm hmm.
45:46Mm hmm.
45:47Wow.
45:48Wow.
45:49This was deep.
45:49Um, I think I think we, uh, listen, we're not here to give any advice, but I think our conversation
45:58has definitely.
46:01Opal's ears.
46:03When it comes to buy now, pay later, when it comes to financing certain things.
46:10Um.
46:11Yeah, we can table this for another discussion, too, because.
46:16The car situation.
46:18And we could spend a whole hour talking about that, because what the.
46:22And the one thing I always say that if you say that you got a TV or you got furniture,
46:29pay it off.
46:30Don't get another bill for at least six months.
46:33That way, that payment that you were sending in for there, you can actually kind of like save that up
46:40for something else that you might need.
46:43And you'll have the money there.
46:45Mm hmm.
46:47That's some good, good information there.
46:50Hmm.
46:51Even though I didn't, I didn't use that.
46:53I didn't do it myself, but it's just something that, you know, learn.
46:58I've learned along the way.
47:02Yeah.
47:02I mean, this whole, uh, financial literacy thing, it's never ending and you learn something new every day.
47:11Yes.
47:12Yes.
47:12Learn something new every day.
47:14Huh.
47:16Well.
47:17Miss Renee.
47:19Uh.
47:21I'm sure you got something out of this.
47:23People out there listening, I'm sure you got something out of this.
47:26And for more information, if you want to know.
47:30Just please head on over to Laren Gaines dot com.
47:32You can sign up for that free 15 minute consultation and we could dig a little bit deeper when it
47:37comes to the debt free living.
47:40Now, Birdman, what do you have going on in your world this week?
47:47Oh, pretty much.
47:49It's a it's another quiet week.
47:51I worked on a video today from that.
47:56I shot down in Galveston.
47:58I'll be working on a few more Sunday.
48:02There's a there's a Zoom reading.
48:06No.
48:07No.
48:07OK.
48:08Saturday.
48:09There's a there's a Zoom reading out of Austin, which would be on Zoom, of course, poetry reading.
48:14And then Sunday afternoon, there's one out of West Palm Beach.
48:20And I'll be probably attending that and reading other than that.
48:25And, you know, I just I got everything done.
48:29I got I finally completed my book, even though I had to end up doing just like I did the
48:37last one.
48:37I had to end up doing the book cover myself, even though I paid for them to do it.
48:43Oh, I got it done.
48:46You know, I got it done.
48:48And I just sit back and said, I'm not going nowhere.
48:54I'm going to stay home and I'm going to work on this until.
48:58And, you know, I got it done.
49:01So, you know, I just that I don't have no copies yet.
49:05So I hope to be getting copies sometime in May.
49:09OK, OK.
49:11So, you know, I mean, hey, it's it's cool.
49:14You know, I'm I'm I'm done with that.
49:16But right, right, right.
49:18Now it's off to another project.
49:20I don't know what, but it's off to another one.
49:22Right.
49:24I know that's right.

50:12It's on Spotify on the coffee, wine and words platform.
50:17Yes.
50:19OK.
50:20And other than that, I'm all right.
50:24That's what's up.
50:25That's what's up.
50:26Well, looking forward to the updates.
50:28I'm we going to talk about this every week until this book is out.
50:37Well, I know I got the notification.
50:39Well, I know I'll have my I'll have the copies.
50:42That's the end.
50:44Yeah.
50:45And then once I get my copies, then, you know, it can be released.
50:49I mean, because you know, you can't find it on on nowhere yet because, you know, it's still in in
50:58that motion.
50:58But right, right, right, right, right.
