A simple, natural alternative for daily hydration. πŸ‹

In this video, I demonstrate how to prepare a homemade electrolyte drink using fresh lemons and limes. I started making this as a natural alternative to store-bought sports drinks, which are often filled with artificial food dyes and preservatives.

This DIY recipe is refreshing, uses clean ingredients, and is a great project for anyone looking to simplify their hydration routine. πŸ§‚βœ¨

00:01Oh, that is good. That is so good.
00:15Hi guys. Today we are going to be making a homemade lemon lime electrolyte drink.
00:21So, quick backstory. I had a seizure here at home and when I was brought into accident and emergency,
00:27it was discovered that my sodium levels were 121 millimoles per litre, which is clinical hyponatremia.
00:36Basically, I was over hydrating because of the breastfeeding and so my sodium levels weren't high enough basically in my
00:43body.
00:44And I'm still breastfeeding but I'm now obviously aware of hyponatremia and my hyponatremia is being medically managed.
00:53And the way it's being managed is I have three electrolyte drinks a day and I have store-bought ones,
00:59I have ready-made ones, I have powdered ones and I also have regular blood tests.
01:04But this is a fun homemade electrolyte drink.
01:09There's two reasons basically I like having a recipe for a homemade one up my sleeve.
01:15One, there are times that I actually run out of my store-bought electrolyte drinks and I do have one
01:22powdered one.
01:23That's basically a little sachet and it's like a powdered formula, which I really, really like.
01:27And I ran out of that just before a long weekend.
01:30And the second reason I like sometimes making a homemade one is because I've been aware, especially the ready-made
01:38ones that I've been drinking,
01:39they're very brightly coloured, so I've been very aware that I've been ingesting quite a high amount of basically dyes,
01:48you know, food dyes or colours, reds, purples, yellows, greens.
01:52So I like to sometimes make a homemade one.
01:55But before we get into the fun stuff, it's very important to note that this isn't a medical formula.
02:01While it does follow the ratio of what's considered an electrolyte drink, it isn't a medical formula.
02:08So if you're at risk of hyponatremia or you've had hyponatremia and you need to have medical electrolyte drinks,
02:15always be under the supervision, obviously, of a medical professional.
02:19But, well, let's get into it though.
02:22So we're going to make this one.
02:24So basically the ingredients for this are, you want two cups of water.
02:28So I've got two cups of water here.
02:30Or you can use coconut water as well for extra potassium if you want to.
02:35I'm not a fan of coconut water.
02:37So I just use plain water.
02:39Then you want two tablespoons of fresh lemon or lime juice.
02:43And we're going to make a lemon one today.
02:45But you can make a lime one as well.
02:48And basically two tablespoons is about half a lemon.
02:52But it does depend on the lemon.
02:53I sometimes use half and then another quarter as well.
02:56A fun fact that I did not know until I started making electrolyte drinks is it's the citrus that gives
03:03you the potassium.
03:05So the store-bought electrolyte drinks have got that ratio that your body needs of sodium, potassium and chloride.
03:12And in this homemade one, it's the citrus that's giving you the potassium.
03:16So that was a fun fact that I learned.
03:18Now, the next thing we need is the sweetener.
03:21So one to two tablespoons of honey or maple syrup.
03:25So why sweetener?
03:27Well, it's a no-brainer.
03:28It's going to taste better.
03:29But there's an interesting physiological reason for the sweetener as well.
03:33And that is that sodium sometimes struggles to get through your intestinal wall.
03:40And so basically glucose acts as a carrier.
03:43So you can think of them as happy travel buddies.
03:45Basically sodium is going to hitch a ride with glucose and together they're going to travel through the intestinal wall.
03:52But again, even though this isn't a medical formula, it does still follow a ratio that you do want to
03:57follow.
03:58Because too little glucose and basically you won't get that rapid absorption or that rapid hydration that you want out
04:06of an electrolyte drink.
04:07Too much glucose can actually draw water out of your body and back into your gut.
04:13So it's going to have the opposite effect of what you want the electrolyte drink to be doing.
04:17So I'm using honey.
04:19I've got a really beautiful, good quality honey from Harris Farm Markets.
04:24And then obviously our hero ingredients, our salt.
04:28So you can use a high quality sea salt or in this case I'm using the Himalayan pink salt.
04:34And then a splash of orange juice.
04:37And this can be, you can squeeze orange juice if you like or you can use a store-bought one.
04:42This is a good quality store-bought one and it comes with pulp.
04:45And that's basically for additional flavour and also a bit of additional potassium.
04:51Because remember it's the citrus that gives you the potassium.
04:54Okay, so basically it's very easy to put together.
04:58So basically warm a small amount of the water.
05:01So this is kind of all approximate really.
05:03Like this is just under two cups of water here.
05:07But I've just boiled this kettle.
05:09So I'm going to use, so this is pretty hot.
05:12So obviously if you're going to use water that's fairly hot, which I'm doing now,
05:16you want a heat-proof, some sort of heat-proof jug.
05:20And in this case I'm using the Pyrex.
05:23Because one thing I've discovered about dissolving honey and a good quality coarse salt
05:29is that it actually takes a bit longer to dissolve than you think.
05:34Like you actually have to stir it around a bit.
05:37So we're going to add two tablespoons.
05:39Again, as I said, this is kind of approximate.
05:42But we'll pop that in and then we'll pop another one.
05:47I have to say, it smells so, there's nothing like a beautiful jar of honey.
05:52I'll put a second one in.
05:55And then I'll pop the salt in as well.
05:58And then what I do is I give it quite a good sort of stir.
06:01And then when I do the lemon, I'll just let that sit for a little bit
06:05and then I'll give it another stir.
06:06Now, an eighth of a teaspoon with a grinder like this is about,
06:11again, this is an approximate, but it's about six to eight grinds, full grinds.
06:16So I usually go for the happy medium of seven.
06:27And seven.
06:28That's such a satisfying sound.
06:30I absolutely love that.
06:32And then I'll give this a nice stir.
06:34Like I said, it takes a surprisingly long amount of time to dissolve this.
06:41And you want to obviously dissolve it so much that you don't hear the salt grinding on the bottom.
06:46Because then we're going to be adding that to our cold water base.
06:49And if the salt hasn't dissolved, it's just going to sink to the bottom of your cold water.
06:55I'm going to let that sit for a little bit because that's going to be dissolving for a bit there.
06:59And then we'll do the lemon.
07:04And we'll just take a couple of the obvious pips out.
07:12And give this a nice, um...
07:14So like I said, one to two...
07:16Um, sorry, two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.
07:19It's about half a lemon.
07:26But I'm going to...
07:27I'll just do a little bit.
07:29But you can just then check it.
07:31I'll just do a little bit more this side.
07:36Oh, fresh lemon juice too.
07:38Like, it smells so good.
07:40And that's what I really love about making an electrolyte drink yourself.
07:43Like, you're just getting such beautiful, fresh ingredients.
07:47And if you're not a fan of pips, you can check.
07:49But I don't think I've got any pips in the actual juice.
07:52So I'll give this another stir.
07:55And still hear the salt.
07:56So...
07:57I told you, it does take a minute.
07:59It's nearly there.
08:01That sometimes happens with my store-bought formulas as well.
08:04Like, especially the powdered sachet.
08:06If I then mix it in a glass and I drink the glass,
08:09there'll sometimes be a little bit of that powder still at the bottom.
08:18Ah, I think that's good.
08:20Okay.
08:21Well, that is...
08:22So they're all our ingredients, basically.
08:24So now it's just a matter of adding them all to our cold water base.
08:30So we'll add...
08:32Oh, that just...
08:33I really love the smell of fresh lemon juice.
08:35I'll add that in.
08:38And then you can see these beautiful colours that then are all natural.
08:42I'm going to add a little bit of orange juice for...
08:49Let's give it a little shake for our...
08:52Just extra flavour.
08:54And a little bit of extra potassium.
08:57Oh, see, isn't that gorgeous?
08:59Like, that just comes up with the nicest colour.
09:02And then if you've got a fancy glass shaker or something,
09:05you can then give it a really good shake.
09:07I don't.
09:08So I just make it up in this.
09:10And then you can just give it a stir.
09:11And then what I can do, though,
09:14is I'll just pop the cork lid on here.
09:17And I'll just...
09:19You can just sort of give it a...
09:21Oops.
09:21Shake off like this.
09:23The cork's pretty good.
09:27But because we've dissolved the ingredients really well,
09:30then this is just sort of a matter of mixing it all in.
09:33But isn't that gorgeous?
09:35Like, the colours.
09:36And what I really love about making, you know,
09:40your own electrolyte drink at home
09:42is you're not getting those bright reds and blues
09:45and greens and whatever else colours
09:48they say you shouldn't be getting on a daily basis.
09:51But, like I said, this isn't a medical formula.
09:53So I do rely on the store-bought ones
09:56because they are prescribed to me.
09:57But sometimes I really do like making my own fresh one.
10:01And I just think that looks beautiful.
10:03And it smells beautiful.
10:05And I'm going to have a taste of it
10:07because I do know that this also tastes really beautiful.
10:11Oh, another important point about this
10:14is because there's no preservatives,
10:15it's recommended that you refrigerate it
10:17and you drink it within 24 hours of making it.
10:21So, oh, see, it really does smell nice.
10:26Smells nice and looks nice.
10:27And this makes approximately half a litre
10:31of electrolyte drink.
10:38Oh, that is good.
10:39That is so good.
10:41I can taste the beautiful honey.
10:43I can taste the fresh lemon.
10:44I can also get,
10:45I've also got a little bit of that beautiful orange pulp in here.
10:48And, yeah, it's just lovely.
10:50It does.
10:51It tastes like it's doing you good
10:52and it tastes fresh
10:53and it tastes natural.
10:58Mmm.
11:00It's a really nice recipe.
11:02So there you go.
11:03That's how easy it is
11:04to make your own electrolyte drink at home.
11:10That's how easy it is to make your own electrolyte drink at home.
11:13That's how easy it is to make your own electrolyte drink at home.
