03:29The marathon is the last 12 kilometres.
03:32Because the marathon starts when it gets hard.
03:37And hard is good.
03:39Hard tests you.
03:42Today you follow in the footsteps of the first and the greatest marathon runner of all time.
03:51That Greek soldier Phidipides.
03:54Over two and a half thousand years ago, he ran from Marathon to Athens
04:00and gave his life for his people.
04:06The marathon is his legacy.
04:08You are his legacy.
04:11We salute your courage.
04:14Because you all know it's going to hurt.
04:19But pain is temporary.
04:22Your marathon is forever.
04:26Embrace the struggle.
04:28Because overcoming is your glory.
04:33Celebrate your finish.
04:34Celebrate your marathon.
04:38The legend Robert D. Castello, thank you.
04:42We are inside one minute to race start.

04:47For our Elite Priority Senior and Zone A runners, stand by.
04:54Ladies and gentlemen, on your back.
05:19Ladies and gentlemen, on your back.
05:21How could you start the line?
05:23Any longer.
05:24Put some smiles on those faces runners.
05:28Cold sports heads out.
05:34Good morning runners.
05:36Our survey runners chasing the pinkies.
05:41Give us a wave as you hit that arch.
05:4417 and a half thousand athletes.
05:48Enjoying the Gold Coast Park.
05:52He went to Kiltman.
05:53He went to Kiltman.
05:54Looking to break the world record.
05:56Today is the fastest time in the year.
06:00What a sign it is.
06:01You can see this side.
06:03For a long time this year.
06:08As you come to the start line.
06:10Put those hands in the air.
06:12Give us a wave.
06:14Give us a wave.
06:14You are on the way to a great day.
06:17I know what I want is for me.
06:19Trust me, they don't put rock and looking runners on the bus stops and the bounces.
06:24Give us a smile as you hit that start line.
06:28You guys got this.
06:29You got it.
06:30The start line is open.
06:34I'm on the way to the end.
06:37Good morning runners.
06:40Welcome to your marathon.
06:43The 2026 Asics Gold Coast Marathon is underway.
06:50Here comes our pacer.
06:54What do we got?
06:55Three hour group.
06:57We're on the main area.
06:58Three hour chases.
07:00Three hour group.
07:02Put trust in your paces.
07:04Finally that balloon has been at home.
07:08We've got Pat Carroll down.
07:11High five in our start line.
07:14For those of you running along the inside.
07:17On the ocean side.
07:19There's a member by the name of Pat Carroll.
07:22This is our high fives.
07:23The next one is if you can get one of those.
07:25I've been told it will take two minutes off your own road sign.
07:31Claire!
07:34Claire!
07:36Claire!
07:38Claire!
07:40Claire!
07:40Claire!
07:41Claire!
07:43Claire!
07:44Claire!
07:47Claire!
07:48We've got the police escorts here.
08:00Wheelchair!
08:01Woah!
08:02Woah!
08:05Woah!
08:11Oh, that is so fantastic to see.
08:16Wow!
08:18So we'll have more coming through soon, I'm sure.
08:22Oh, that was heartwarming.
08:25Oh, here comes some more wheelchair racers.
08:28Woohoo!
08:30Woohoo!
08:40I thought you'd have a video of you filming me.
08:43Oh, yeah.
08:45So this is an official, you're an official marathon photographer.
08:49I am.
08:49I am, I am.
08:50And where do you travel around?
08:52Everywhere?
08:53Everywhere.
08:53All around the world.
08:54All around the world.
08:56Well, of course the Gold Coast one is the best one though.
08:58It's the best.
08:58I'm from here.
08:59Oh, so there you go.
09:02What a job though.
09:04I know.
09:04What's the best thing about it?
09:06No brainer.
09:07Travel.
09:07Travel really.
09:08And the week's off.
09:09So I'll do this because they're so long days.
09:11Yep.
09:11I'll be like a week off and then.
09:12Oh, yeah, of course.
09:13And I've got Sydney coming up.
09:15So we'll go down to Sydney to Sydney one.
09:17Wow.
09:17At the end of this month.
09:17So ours are the only marathons, the Gold Coast ones, with that World Athletics label.
09:23It is.
09:24And it's now officially the second biggest in the country.
09:26Behind Sydney.
09:28Is it really?
09:29Here comes some more.
09:30Wow.
09:39Oh, that is very exciting.
09:40It is.
09:41Very, very exciting.
09:42Yeah.
09:44Oh, well, enjoy the day.
09:45I think it's going to be a nice day.
09:46Absolutely.
09:47I wonder if we'll get a course record today.
09:50Maybe.
09:51Maybe we have one yesterday.
09:52We might have one today.
09:53The weather's beautiful for it, I think, at the moment.
09:55It is.
09:55It's just the wind.
09:56If wind picks up, then it's puff up.
09:58Then you get wind resistance.
09:59Have you photographed here before?
10:01The Gold Coast one?
10:01It's my sixth one.
10:03Sixth one.
10:04Yeah.
10:04Wow.
10:05So you're an elite photographer.
10:07Yeah.
10:08With the elite.
10:08Yeah.
10:09You're well.
10:09I travel around with them.
10:11All the crew.
10:12Oh, that's awesome.
10:13Oh, thanks for chatting to us.
10:15No worries.
10:15I'm Jared, by the way.
10:17Lovely to meet you, Jared.
10:18You too.
10:18I'll look out for your work.
10:20Yeah, good.
10:20For sure.
10:23Let's go.
10:24Let's go.
10:26Let's go.
10:28Let's go.
10:28Let's go.
10:29Let's go.
10:32Let's go.
10:34And here comes a big police escort.
10:42Clearing the path, I imagine.
10:44Let's go.
10:48Let's go.
10:51Let's go.
10:51Get ready for the runners.
10:53Oh, here they come.
10:56Oh, come on.
10:58Oh, come on.
11:01Get him.
11:03Get him.
11:04How exciting.
11:06So I got the lead runners coming through, I had my phone ready and I saw the police escort obviously
11:12coming through, but that is so exciting.
11:15I have to say though, probably for me, I think the very most emotional moment though, a little while ago,
11:26was seeing the very first wheelchair racer come through.
11:28I really did choke up, I like that, it was just so motivating and it was so awesome.
11:33And that's what we obviously come to these events for.
11:36So we've just caught the first runners coming through, so they've left from Broadwater Parklands and they've come straight up
11:45here to the Esplanade.
11:46So the elite athletes don't actually take that long to get up here, they come up pretty fast.
11:52And so we've seen the first of them coming through, but now this year we've got record numbers.
11:58So we've got, I think, all total about over 40,000 competitors, so we're going to be seeing lots coming
12:05through now.
12:09All levels of athletic ability are in this race and that's what makes the Gold Coast Marathon, it is really
12:16inclusive.
12:17So you've got the elite athletes that begin first and then you've got people of all levels.
12:22And it's 42.2 kilometres, so there's going to be some very sore muscles at the end of today.
12:29But here they come, they come more, I think.
12:31Oh, here comes another way.
12:50And here on the Gold Coast, we've got the Gold Coast Marathon and the Half Marathon.
12:54And very excitingly they are both part of the World Athletics Label Road Race.
13:00So they've both got that prestigious title.
13:02And I did just find out from an official photographer who works for the Marathon,
13:08that this is actually the second biggest in Australia as well, the Gold Coast Marathon.
13:13So that's actually very exciting to me.
13:15I've been doing it now.
13:17Yeah.
13:18There he is.
13:24Good and fantastic.
13:30It's so exciting.
13:33Stephen Butcher
13:35Yes, Stephen.
13:38Yeah, buddy.
13:39Thank you so much.
13:45All right, let's get ready.
14:0336-10.
14:05Excellent. That's good.
14:07Yeah.
14:13This one should be Marley.
14:14Yeah, Marley was a bit of fun, I think.
14:24So if you want to get a finish of Ribbon in the Gold Coast Marathon,
14:28you have to finish the course in 6 hours and 40 minutes.
14:32And that can actually be really emotional too.
14:34If you're at the finish line, at the tail end of that 6 hours,
14:38you will see people of all varying athletic ability
14:41who obviously aren't elite athletes,
14:43who are really pushing themselves to make that tie.
14:46Money! Yeah, money!
14:58Go! Go down!
15:05Go Easton!
15:07Go Easton!
15:08Go Easton!
15:09Go Easton!
15:11Go Easton!
15:14So it's right on 7 o'clock,
15:16and we're here at Surfers Paradise on the Esplanade,
15:19watching these masses of waves coming through now.
15:22So the way they handle the marathon,
15:25is from Gold Coast Broadwater Parklands,
15:27they let the runners go in waves,
15:30basically right from there too.
15:32So it isn't this big crush at the beginning obviously.
15:34So we've got the wheelchair races,
15:36then we've got the elite athletes,
15:38and then in terms of roughly,
15:40in terms of people's athletic ability,
15:43they're then let run in sort of these groups.
15:46And each runner has got a timing tracker on them.
15:51And it's usually, I'm not sure,
15:53I haven't seen one in this race,
15:54but usually it's something embedded into their race mid.
15:57And it then tracks their time obviously.
16:00And the Gold Coast Marathon is famous for its flat fast track.
16:06And in fact today you couldn't ask for better conditions.
16:10There isn't much of a wind,
16:11and it's just beautiful,
16:13very low humidity,
16:15nice and cool,
16:16a little bit chilly for the spectators,
16:18but obviously perfect for the runners.
16:21And so if you haven't run the Gold Coast Marathon before,
16:25and you come along,
16:26about 60% of participants manage a personal best time
16:31when they run this track,
16:32because it's just beautiful running conditions.
16:34And it's also very scenic.
16:37So about 29 kilometers,
16:39I'll just double check that.
16:41Yeah, yeah,
16:4329 kilometers of this track
16:45runs directly along the coastline.
16:49So you couldn't ask for a more beautiful view
16:51as you're running the marathon.
16:53And I've got a few interesting facts
16:55about the marathon here actually.
16:57This year apparently
16:59is the biggest number of participants ever.
17:03So this year has brought in a staggering 42,000 entries.
17:10So that's across the board.
17:12But the marathon, the big one,
17:14that's obviously got the largest number of participants.
17:17And we've got participants from 59 countries.
17:21So we really do attract athletes from all around the world
17:25who come here to run this track.
17:27The second biggest, I think, in Australia.
17:30Like I said,
17:31it does have that prestigious
17:33World Athletics Label Road Race Award.
17:37And I've just seen those balloons.
17:39So we've got the pacemakers.
17:40So we've got some runners with these balloons.
17:42And they're pacemakers that run along with the pack.
17:47But it's just, like honestly,
17:49it's worth the early morning rise.
17:51You know, you sort of set the alarm
17:52and you get up really early.
17:53But it is really worth it.
17:55So if you haven't come along to a marathon,
17:57whether it's here on the Gold Coast
17:58or anywhere in the world really,
18:00where they run these big marathons,
18:02if you haven't actually been to a marathon before,
18:04I really, really recommend it.
18:06Because seeing the athletes
18:08and knowing what they're going through
18:09and knowing the hard work
18:11that they've put into this day
18:12and the preparation,
18:14the nutrition,
18:15the rest
18:16and the mental discipline
18:18to do this massive race,
18:20just to come along and cheer them on,
18:22is just an honour in itself.
18:29So we meet a spectator
18:31and he's got someone
18:32who he knows in the marathon.
18:33Who have you got in the marathon?
18:34Oh, I've got my daughter.
18:35Oh, that's awesome.
18:37And it's her first ever marathon,
18:39so she was really nervous,
18:41but how is all the feeling?
18:43How am I supposed to pick up?
18:45Oh, it's just a glowing runner, isn't it?
18:48Oh, that is what...
18:49That's so exciting for you.
18:52It's not all here to be up here cheering the line.
18:54Yeah, from Western Australia, always.
18:56Oh, you've travelled from Western Australia
18:58to come in here.
18:59Wow, so beautiful.
19:00It's unreal.
19:01What a pink, though.
19:03Look at those buildings in the background.
19:05Yeah, yeah.
19:05Runners, it's got it all.
19:07Yeah.
19:08It's got it all.
19:08It's got it all.
19:09Yeah, that's true.
19:10So she's been training, obviously,
19:12along with...
19:13Does she do other marathons as well?
19:14Yeah, no.
19:15This is her first ever marathon,
19:17and I think the furthest she's run
19:19is about 10 kilometres before, so...
19:21Oh, wow.
19:22Yeah.
19:23Oh, that's so exciting.
19:24It is...
19:25What's her name?
19:27It's Jane.
19:28Jane!
19:28Jane!
19:29Oh, that is so exciting.
19:31Yeah, yeah.
19:32She's sure be coming through soon, so...
19:34I'll be watching here.
19:35We'll watch out, but that's great.
19:36I could miss her just like that.
19:38Yeah, I know.
19:39They're proud of you.
19:40Yes.
19:40They're talking a little bit.
19:41That's exciting.
19:42Yeah, it's massive.
19:44Oh, that's so exciting.
19:46See, people really do come from all around Australia,
19:49all around the world.
19:50It really is a big, big event.
19:52And we do, I...
19:54We do live here on the Gold Coast,
19:56and we do see these beautiful buildings.
19:58Yeah, no.
19:59This is exciting.
20:01Yeah, but just...
20:02Amazing.
20:02Yeah, but to hear that then from someone
20:04who's come to the Gold Coast,
20:06and can see all this,
20:07it really is a beautiful destination place
20:10to run a marathon.
20:12It really is.
20:12If you haven't visited the Gold Coast before,
20:14it really is a gorgeous place.
20:17Yeah, so...
20:18Oh, that's exciting.
20:19That's really exciting.
20:20Well, hopefully we see her.
20:22Yeah, no.
20:22Apparently she's not far.
20:23My wife just said she's not far.
20:25Oh, awesome.
20:26Yeah, all right.
20:27Well, we'll cheer her up soon.
20:31Yay!
20:32How good.
20:38Oh, that is awesome.
20:39How good.
20:40Yeah, no.
20:41High-five her.
20:41Just like that.
20:42Okay.
20:44We'll wait another couple of hours now.
20:46Oh, you must be so proud though.
20:48Yeah, no.
20:49It's great.
20:50Man, it's a big achievement to be a finisher in this race.
20:53Yeah, it is.
20:54It's such a healthy environment, isn't it?
20:56Yeah.
20:56Just watching all these runners come through and so forth.
21:00It's so good.
21:01It's very motivating.
21:02Yeah.
21:03I feel that I need to hit the gym a little bit more.
21:06Yeah, let's go.
21:08All right.
21:09Enjoy.
21:11I've got to get crossed now.
21:12Oh, good luck.
21:16Oh, my God.
21:18Yeah.
21:21So being a spectator and being a supporter is also a big deal.
21:26People sometimes train very hard to come here and hold their placards.
21:32Like there.
21:33I've trained four months to hold this.
21:37Let's go.
21:38Keep running.
21:46So you want to take it seriously if you're coming here to support someone.
21:50You want to put in that training so you can hold that placard well and be here with your
21:56best voice to cheer people on.
21:58Because that's really important for the runners, obviously.
22:01If you've got a support crew here, you know, it's really, it gives them the motivation to
22:07push themselves as hard as they can.
22:09And, you know, I love hearing the supporters in the crowds, especially when they spot the
22:14person that they're here to support.
22:16You know, it's just so great.
22:18So we're just now waiting for the lead runners to come back along the loop.
22:25So that's going to be very exciting to catch those.
22:28And then where they'll go is they'll go back past the start line and go all the way up to
22:34Runaway Bay and do a loop there and then come back finally to the finish line.
22:39We're very sore muscles.
22:42But now we're waiting so hopefully they won't be too far off.
22:46But it's so exciting.
22:48The crowds really have grown now.
22:50Like we've got people more lining up the roads.
22:53And this will be all through Surface Paradise now and beyond.
22:57Right down probably to Main Beach and yeah.
23:02We get character runners as well.
23:06I love it.
23:07Like you really do.
23:08I do remember that from other years too.
23:10You'll get people running in superhero costumes and all sorts of things.
23:14You know.
23:16It's a great day.
23:18It's a really great day obviously for participants and for spectators.
23:22And it's a fantastic event for our community.
23:25And yeah the atmosphere is just great.
23:29So I don't think we're far off from the lead athletes coming through again because we've got the helicopter up
23:37in the sky.
23:38And the helicopter is obviously following the marathon.
23:41So I reckon they're not far off now.
23:45And they're going to be coming along this road too.
23:50Oh actually I can see a police car coming.
23:54I think they're coming now.
23:55Oh.
23:56Yeah.
23:57You can hear them.
23:58Here they come.
24:00So we'll see what sort of time they've got.
24:02Wow.
24:02Woo.
24:03Yeah.
24:04Woo.
24:06Woo.
24:06Woo, woo, woo.
24:07Woo.
24:11So they're obviously clearing that bit of a track there.
24:18Now that would be a good job.
24:23That would be a good police beat.
24:25Music

24:30Music

24:32Music
24:33Music

24:36Music
24:48How exciting
24:50So there were the lead runners
24:52And that's so funny
24:53The guys in the car
24:55Are literally shoving
24:57Not shoving but just
24:59Urging or you know
25:01Politely making this gesture
25:04For the runners that are
25:05Coming this way
25:07So they're actually not only
25:09Are they trying to get the crowd you know
25:11To leave enough room for these lead athletes
25:13But they were actually urging the other
25:15Athletes across a little bit
25:17So I don't know how they
25:19Have the athletes going both ways
25:21the
25:21The
25:21The
25:28Y
25:29The
25:33Which
25:34The
25:47Allegela
25:48They
25:48The
25:48The
25:48The
25:48The
25:48The
25:49Female
25:54Oh, that is great. That was really, that was awesome to see that basically. They were really trying to make
26:02room for that. It's pretty crowded. The road is pretty crowded. They've got now lead athletes going back that way.
26:11Masses of athletes coming this way. But now we've got both ways.
26:15And I have seen some spectators trying to duck across to the other side. I think now that we've got
26:22them coming both ways, I don't think you'd have any hope. It's like a big game of Crossy Road. Even
26:28when they were going one way, it was like a big game of Crossy Road. Now they're going both ways.
26:33Yeah, I really don't think you've got a hope. I think if you're on one side as a spectator, you've
26:37got to stay on that side now.
26:57So it is just so exciting to be here and to see these athletes. So being here at the end
27:05of Carville Avenue with the beautiful Thirds of Paradise sign here.
27:08This is a really good spot to see a lot of the action because you do see the athletes going
27:14one way and then you see them coming back as well.
27:17But look, there are many other spots along the Gold Coast Marathon track where you can see the athletes and
27:23get a really good spot.
27:25And on the Gold Coast Marathon day, you do see heaps of people, you know, they'll get their coffee and
27:30just be along anywhere along that road to cheer the athletes on.
27:34So it's so exciting though. So yeah, there are other spots to see them. And then of course, the real
27:41finale and the real emotional bit and the real exciting bit will be seeing them come through the finish line.
27:56the great 26 and Gold Coast Marathon day with a wheezing calling Aussie. Where's all the Aussie's? Aussie, Aussie, Aussie?
