00:15insight into what the day is gonna or the afternoon's gonna produce yeah thanks
00:20Luke yeah like what was mentioned my name is Des Purcell I work for Burn at Mary
00:27Regional Group BMRG for short and I'm a part of the Cool Burn Squad which is a
00:35burn squad that goes out and does a different type of burn on country which
00:41is a low-intensity burn and we have targets to meet with our funding body for
00:50our agreement which you know our target areas are you know making sure we take
00:54care of prime agricultural land but we're about us pyros we're about looking
01:01after country and promoting country so this cool intensity this low intensity
01:05burn which is a cool burn it's something that it's been around for a long long
01:10time with Aboriginal people and it's that method of burning helps promote country
01:15so it helps take out a lot of the weeds and it's been missing out of the landscape
01:20for a long long time and that's what we we're here to do we're you know trying to
01:24work with landholders like yourself Luke to try and promote that method and you
01:30know hopefully catch catch on to others so that they can you know take it on their
01:37own themselves and look after their property and their livelihood by using cool burns as a
01:45method to yeah promote healthy country so I'm a Tarabalang Bunda man and the
01:53country that we're on here today it's a part of the the broader First Nations by
01:57Ili Gorang Gorang and Tarabalang Bunda native title claim it roughly encompasses
02:01about 20,000 square kilometres of country all the way up to the north which where
02:07Port Elmer is stretches west out to Monte Ranges and then down towards Childers and
02:13then back out to the coast to where the Burrum River is and then it also has an
02:20agreement with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority or Grumpa as a
02:25native title claim there for sea country which is our Tumra so our traditional use
02:29of marine resource agreement that we have with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park
02:33Authority so that gives us the ride as native title holders to operate on our
02:39country and utilize our land and and and waters like what we did long before yeah
02:48things changed so this afternoon we've got a I think it's about 1.4
02:55approximately 1.4 hectares of country that we're looking to start these cool burn
03:00operations on and we'll start down in the down on that northwestern edge working
03:07against the wind obviously it takes a it takes a little bit longer for fire to work against the wind
03:12so hence the reason why it'll be a bit bruised with the landscape and slow it down and burn a
03:18lot of that
03:19vegetation underneath there you know take out some of those weeds and built up areas
03:25where there's leaf litter and and fallen logs and stuff to clean it up we've got Conway as
03:32well which is a another one of my brothers there that's working on the cool burn squad he's a
03:42and we're a part of that cool burn squad team so we'll be heading up the
03:47operations make sure that we achieve the objective that we set out to do

13:02So we can behave in a relaxing manner, which gives that positive energy out to the fire as a relaxing

13:13It's like sitting around a campfire and you're looking into that fire like a trance because you know it's controlled,
13:19it's contained.
13:20And it's a healing process for yourself because you're sitting here, relaxed, enjoying it.

16:02So this is just where the burn started.
16:04so looking through here we're pretty happy so it was a little bit warm through that section but
16:11that was where a lantana bush was and the objective is to really take out some of these
16:17more invasive weeds with this slow style burning so you can see that lantana bush is all heated up
16:25we'll see in summer if it comes back or not as we come through this little section you can see
16:32a very distinctive line of where the fire has stopped which is exactly what we wanted so we've
16:38got that wetland area in there and we didn't want the fire to go through there and it's pulled up
16:45right along the edge of it the whole way around which is exactly what we thought would happen which
16:50is really good and here again you see lantana bush that was just on the edge of that wetland
16:56hopefully we've knocked that one out or them few out as well just coming through here it's amazing
17:03what you find when it is it thinned out a little bit so after the or before the burn we
17:08rarely got
17:09in here it's just super thick as you can see up there that's our fence line up where you can
17:16see
17:16that burning finish but coming in here found this old fence which is possibly saying the tree line
17:26was probably way back here closer to the actual creek originally so we may have lost
17:38maybe 60 meters of actual productive land so not that we're looking to bring it back
17:44right back here but we are looking to thin out and promote more grass growth underneath here
17:52so here's the old fence which pretty crazy didn't even know this one existed possibly a 70 80 years
18:00old maybe so this is pretty interesting as you can see the fire came through here but not too hot
18:07didn't burn absolutely everything so this is an old fence post laying on the ground
18:11so we turn him over there's still plenty of bugs and things like that living along the ground here
18:24so obviously intention was to not absolutely obliterate this area and protect certain things like that and
18:34that's great to see what's happened and the main objective of this burn was to clean this
18:41bit of timbered area up a little bit and knock out a lot of these invasive weeds like lantana and
18:49thin out
18:49any young wattle that's coming up that we don't really think is necessary through here and it'll probably let
18:58the bushland breathe a little bit better and also promote grass growth in through here a little bit more light
19:06coming through which will be good and if you look up to the top see most of the tops of
19:12the trees like there's no
19:14effect on the tops of these trees they're all still nice and green
19:17even these she oaks handled it really well
