00:00but right now it's something we do every year and i know it's ridiculous but i also think it's
00:05ridiculously fun grade the dallas cowboys draft 877-881-1053 now i know realistically
00:14you probably need to wait at least three years until you have any semblance of an idea of how
00:20successful this draft really was but the hell with that let's go ahead and do it right now
00:26um and yes you're right seeing these dudes play will tell us the story later on but seeing what
00:34they did i think that's what i'm trying to grade and i think mel kuyper did kevin you know what
00:39i
00:39don't often give him much credit oh but in all of his like uh in his grades that i saw
00:44immediately
00:45it was what sunday morning i was like what does this guy have any other time that he does and
00:50then
00:50it went back to you saying i don't have time and that was all i could think of but he
00:55already had
00:56his draft grades up for everything and i was like okay let's look at this and everything that got
01:02really high grades and high marks said they needed this and they executed that so that's what i'll
01:08grade them on is what did they need what was their plan what did they what was the responsibility of
01:13the team here and i think the first responsibility was to come out of the first round with at least
01:21one grade a pedigree player and they did that all right so caleb downs is that player if i'd have
01:28said malachi lawrence would you been like what is happening right here yeah i would have been a
01:31little thrown off um but but then they came away with a a b papon a best player available that
01:38they
01:38liked at position of need that was for them that was a player they coveted uh they coveted downs but
01:45they also didn't think he would be there either right so so i give them for that part i think
01:50they
01:51executed filling two spots that they needed to fill for multiple reasons one they needed the bodies
01:57but then on top of that kevin malachi lawrence's actual presence is good downs presence beyond the field
02:06is what i think is going to be a game changer for them at pick 12 so what do you
02:11mean by that
02:12i think pick 11 yeah pick 11 well they were at 12 yes that's right um uh they i think
02:17when i'm what i
02:18mean by that is i think that you get guys that show up and you can see everything that they
02:24do on the
02:25field and you're like okay well that's how i i judge that player i think this dude is going to
02:30have
02:30the impact in the locker room now did you hear uh az earlier when we were talking to her and
02:36everything was i don't have a lot to compare it to yeah so maybe it does take a minute for
02:41him to
02:41get his feet underneath him but i don't think so i don't think that even christian parker thinks that
02:46i think christian parker thinks this is a dude that's walking in like they were talking about page
02:51in that like this and jerry said it too dac and him are pie pipers they're guys that the guys
02:57follow
02:57they just have this natural thing about them that people want to be around and the more you're
03:03around a guy like that kevin the better off you're going to be because he studies and he works hard
03:09and that's what this team has needed a guy that has that kind of commitment that isn't forced and told
03:14to do it and just he lives that kind of lifestyle so that's what i feel with downs man there
03:19is so much
03:20trolling happening right now and the fan text it's b pap on kevin from the 214 and then from the
03:27817
03:27you should have asked az fudd if she heard the breaking news about the angel reese trade
03:31never decided oh we'll get to the trade today kevin to cover it uh we'll cover it today for sure
03:39worried about the michigan pick wish we would have gotten another guy just because of his school i know
03:46central florida came up with that that might be a great separate question are there schools that are
03:51like not the cowboys but like as fan base are there schools on your list now that you're like
03:55not defensive line from here not an edge from here i was kind of curious about that because
04:01didn't we keep hearing the power five the the big four uh that was that's what the cowboys focus was
04:07going to be yes ucf's in that in that grouping i i when i think of it i just think
04:13of bama michigan
04:14yeah i think of those i just don't think of ucf first because of that and people talk about the
04:19smaller schools getting squeezed out and to a certain extent that's true but i think people also
04:23ignore like the landscape of the conferences having shifted and so many of the schools that
04:27you think about as a smaller school are now a power conference yeah yeah you're you're dead on and
04:32that's what i just i don't think of that immediately um but and and alec i'm sorry i'm just kind
04:38of going
04:38through my through the first group here when we talk about a dude in michigan yes people panic and
04:45freak out about that but i just don't foresee his role being a what taco or mozzie's role is right
04:52and
04:52right and then when i watch the player play and i watch how explosive he was that's something that
04:58those two never had they never had the explosiveness that i see in braham and that's or uh barham that's
05:05that's what i see in him is is i see an explosive first step and a dude that is just
05:10kind of a heat
05:11seeking missile in a lot of different areas he has places to grow but right now kevin i was going
05:16into
05:16this draft with shamar james as one of my guys there yeah at least i have competition at that
05:23point and i don't have to just turn to that and say please help us out yeah and i saw
05:27a couple
05:27of people commenting and i absolutely agree with this you have to factor in or you should factor in
05:33the trade for d winters and then the undrafted free agents as well and if you don't want to count
05:37the undrafted free agents then i absolutely think you should still count the trade for d winters because
05:41you used a draft pick to make that happen alec i'm going to go to you in just one second
05:46nfl.com
05:47so you are you adding pickings to this too then because you used one of your draft picks to get
05:51him
05:52only the year it happened so no they do not get credit for that otherwise i feel like clearly i
05:59was
05:59giving an a plus i think it was a dollar bill jones uh had posted all these things from this
06:04draft
06:04and i was like holy crap look at this draft it's amazing yeah yeah you know i probably yeah because
06:11then are you throwing in quinnon and or kenny clark and yeah i'm i'm probably not counting all
06:18of those but in the first three i'll give them an a for that man i thought i thought they
06:22they
06:23executed getting a a high pedigree player with their first overall pick that i thought should
06:28have been a top 10 dude anyway uh if not top five right and then they added another position of
06:33need
06:34that they think can do very well off that edge so nfl.com gave him a b plus they gave
06:40him a
06:40b plus on day one a b on day two and a b plus on day three cbs sports also
06:46gave them a b plus
06:47mel kuiper and espn gave them an a and i know the morning show was talking about a brugler had
06:55it as
06:56his fourth favorite draft i i uh do believe alec what are you thinking here grade wise for the
07:03dallas cowboys draft you know i often say who the hell is mel kuiper but i agree with him in
07:08this case
07:08it makes me laugh every time alec it really does it's one of the best quotes in nfl history if
07:14you
07:14ask me but uh i would agree a flat a just right at an a because i i i started
07:21to think about it
07:22because you you look at some of the needs and linebacker was a big topic of conversation but
07:28uh i saw a quote from howie roseman and i was like i've heard this before and it's because he
07:32says this
07:33after every single draft and i really like it is he's like if you go into the draft and you
07:38leave
07:39feeling like you addressed every single hole on your team you probably had a bad draft because you
07:45weren't taking best player available you weren't following your board you were forcing needs um and
07:51he says that literally every year and i look at this draft and i'm like huh you did a lot
07:56of good work
07:57and you addressed some weak areas but you threw in a wide receiver you threw in a tackle uh you
08:03tripled up on edge instead of going with an inside linebacker by trade you know you're taking jay
08:10sean barum who you're gonna move and say you're gonna be a primary inside linebacker rather than
08:15moving around a little bit so i like what they did because it feels like they truly followed their
08:21board in this draft that's why they moved up just one pick to get caleb downs that's why they took
08:26malachi lawrence they trusted their evaluations but overall you did still because of how many
08:34holes you had on this team you addressed a lot of needs so i do think your pass rush got
08:39better
08:39in this draft i do think that your run fitting got better and i do think that the back end
08:45of your
08:45pass coverage is going to be better because of caleb downs and all the things that you're going to ask
08:49him to do i'm kind of curious uh alec and kevin the the way they navigated and moved around and
08:56as you said with the d winners trade utilized them not just as well we have to sit here and
09:01take the pick that lands in our lap yeah did you like the way that they that they moved around
09:06and
09:07acquired what they acquired rather than just sitting because i give them a lot of credit for that part
09:12too there were some things that they they saw the second round was going to be a run on linebackers
09:18and everybody out there i've seen a lot of texts that were like they should have gone up to the
09:22second
09:22round to get one kevin you told us the price yeah the price was a lot and i feel like
09:27steven jones
09:28backed us up on that he was like yeah that's just not yeah in reality it was it was a
09:33lot would you
09:33have paid that price for for unproven player to get that or keep the depth yeah i feel like the
09:39depth
09:39thing was a smarter decision i agree with that and you know what because i've started to kind of
09:44construct what the defense could look like and we're going to do a segment on this tomorrow i think
09:49you might be surprised at what the depth could look like defensively although i'm also prepared
09:54for people to pick apart and be like well i already hate this player and this player and like you're
09:58just going to have to uh deal with that and and i saw somebody say this and and i i
10:03i hear you for
10:04sure but i want you to consider this as somebody said hey i really hate that wide receiver pick
10:09should have gotten more defensive or offensive line help and so there is where i'll point this out to
10:16you here's just some of the names langston patterson linebacker from vanderbilt tommy dunn jr
10:21defensive tackle from kansas dj withers once again a defensive tackle from can uh i think it's also from
10:30kansas sydney fugar the tackle offensive tackle from baylor pete the offensive tackle from kentucky
10:38gilliam another defensive lineman from virginia tech those are all undrafted free agents that you
10:46picked up and i don't think i mean i this is not a hard argument to make i don't think
10:51there's
10:52really too too much difference between somebody you draft in the seventh round and potentially
10:56some of those undrafted free agents so i hear what they're saying but what if i told you that
11:01you also picked up like four defensive linemen that had an equivalent or better grade than your
11:07seventh round pick doesn't that make you like feel a little bit better about taking that flyer on the
11:12seventh round wide receiver and i don't know what information they had that maybe they were like
11:15hey we kind of like this kid sure and somebody's gonna snag him right here at the end of the
11:20draft
11:21uh let's go ahead and take him maybe that's the case but i watched him and i was like hey
11:26he's kind
11:27of fun again he's not polished completely and i don't know how polished he is on a lot of different
11:32things i want to see some toughness some more some different toughness a lot of the catches kevin
11:37that i saw from him were wide open stuff because he just burned past people yeah and i think he
11:41has
11:42some really good route running ability so i'm looking forward to that and then special teams
11:46let's see how that goes kevin because uh you're a big fan of turpin but i think we all agree
11:51we want
11:51a little more out of uh out of what we're getting off of our special teams right now and there's
11:55a puppy
11:55in the gym right now and it's adorable and oh my gosh my wife would be going crazy i want
12:00to pet the puppy
12:01that is delightful uh but the but the i think that they're when it comes to those under they're all
12:07down there for a reason yeah they're not first round picks for a reason and they're going to have
12:12to work hard to make the team but even still somebody texted in and was like malachi lawrence
12:17isn't even going to start you draft you used a first round pick on the non-starter and i think
12:21that you won't i don't think you're going to see i don't think you're going to see nine sacks
12:26in the first season right i told you you think bobby would bet his hair again for that i would
12:30advise him not to and you know that i would do that because i've done a study uh and i
12:35rely on
12:35my studies sometimes kevin so i would just say let's see how this season goes and see what he
12:40can develop into because i think before everything's said and done with you're going to like the player
12:45so this is from the 682 as far as attacking definitely have to give them an a uh from the
12:52806
12:53i would give them an a minus also from the 405 i would give this draft an a minus based
12:58on listening
12:59to you guys along with christian parker seeming to have some real input and then somebody said
13:05you know y'all really should go back and grade the draft from three years ago that would be a
13:09lot of
13:09fun too and i think we should already did because that draft was a disaster yeah uh it's a d
13:15and what
13:16i want to see if people can remember how they felt after that draft and how reality looks you know
13:22what i'm saying because that's tough to reconcile you might have been like oh i love that draft then it
13:27turned out to be crap here's another thing too um each the last three years at least have we known
13:34what we need to draft a new defensive coordinator you know three years in a row and you're like
13:42what what are we looking for to to make this team better uh zimmer you you were like he was
13:50just like
13:50just give me the players and i'll put them in the spots and then last year it was like i
13:55don't even
13:55know where the spots they need to be are and neither do they like that's what i'm i'm looking
14:00so i i need to see with christian parker and i'm hoping we get long enough to do it the
14:04two-year
14:04three-year plan and how it works because kevin next year we should have a better idea of what they
14:10need and want defensively based on what he truly wants and how he truly we're going off what we think
14:15his idea is and his idea comes from the fangio world and it comes from some of the other things
14:21that we've seen a lot of afc teams using this kind of defense so we're coming with something we think
14:25is the idea but it's not going to be until we actually get a little further in with him
14:30that we have a bet a good idea of what he wants and how he's trying to accomplish it
