00:00This is the Injury Report, presented by NYU Langone Health.
00:05I'm convinced that the Mets season is cursed.
00:08Francisco Lindor is undergoing an MRI to know exactly how much time he's going to miss due to a calf
00:15injury.
00:15So in today's Injury Report, we're talking with Dr. Dennis Cardone,
00:20who specializes in sports medicine and orthopedics at NYU Langone,
00:24for hopefully some good news on the latest Mets to hit the injured list.
00:30Doc, it's always a pleasure when you come on, and you know the deal, Hill.
00:34When they go on IL, we talk about them on IR.
00:38So here's the play on where he injured the calf,
00:41and I initially thought it could have been some sort of hamstring injury,
00:45but you can see him wincing pain a little bit, but he still kept running to home plate.
00:50In fact, he scored.
00:51So can you break down what you think could be happening to the calf throughout the course of that play?
01:13You know what it really looks like by the time he's rounding second base that he's already had the injury.
01:18He seems to be slowing down, and then in a slower pace than we normally see him running,
01:22all the way to home plate.
01:24On the good news front, when he gets to home plate, he's able to get right up and walk on
01:30it.
01:31So that already has some good indications for us regarding the type of injury and severity of injury.
01:37Are you saying that gets happening as he's rounding second?
01:40He made it all the way to home.
01:41So, yeah, I guess we got to kind of tip our caps to him for gutting it out,
01:46and it looks like a guy who really wanted to end an 11 or 12-game losing streak.
01:51I don't know.
01:52I lost count at like eight.
01:54But did he actually make it worse by continuing to run home?
01:59Or let's say had he pulled up, would it not have been as bad of an injury?
02:06You know what?
02:06The really bad injuries, he wouldn't have been able to keep running on it and make it home.
02:11So I don't think we need to worry too much that he had any significant worsening of the injury by
02:17running home.
02:18Juan Soto injured his calf, and he missed around, I believe, 11 to 13 games and was out for like
02:26three weeks.
02:27Should we expect the same recovery timeline and return to play as Juan Soto,
02:34who just got back to the lineup after an IL stint with the same injury?
02:41It certainly can be in that three-week range.
02:44I mean, the suspicion is that he has a partial tear, a partial strain of one of the calf muscles.
02:51So if they try to get him back too early, it may ping pong.
02:55You get back in early, you exert, you explode on it, and suddenly it's just not ready to be back
03:02on the field.
03:02So three weeks, you know, is probably a good, safe guess that it might take him that long.
03:08Again, on the positive side, he got right up.
03:10He was walking on it.
03:11So maybe this one will be quicker.
03:13Maybe we'll see him back in 10 to 14 days.
03:15Tough to predict.
03:17Lindor, I mean, it's tough for him, and he's got to be pretty upset right now because he was just
03:22getting his back going after another cold start to a season.
03:26In fact, in his last seven games, he was 9 for 25 with two home runs and five RBIs.
03:33Do you expect some sort of a slow start when he returns?
03:39I think once he gets that green light, he's going to be ready to go.
03:43So he'll be back.
03:44You know, it may take him, as we know, just a little time to adjust a bit.
03:48But in terms of the injury, I think he'll be ready to go once he's back on the field.
03:52How would you treat a non-professional athlete with the same calf injury?
03:58You know, not much different than the professional athlete.
04:01Get rehab, get physical therapy started from day one.
04:06Get that moving, already start a stretching program, strengthening program, and gradually progress as tolerated.
04:13Do you think the weather could have played some sort of factor in this injury with it being cold?
04:21Could be, right?
04:22They're a little bit tighter in the colder weather.
04:25Maybe don't feel as loose.
04:27Could be.
04:28Okay.
04:28I'm going to give you – I'll give you a maybe on that one.
04:30Okay.
04:31You know, because it's just hard for baseball players, though.
04:33Their start and stop is a lot different when it comes to football.
04:37And it's like you could be, you know, standing around for a little bit,
04:40and then you got to go full goal, full sprint.
04:43And I was just thinking, like, maybe the calf kind of tightened up because of the weather,
04:47and then maybe him not being as warm as he needed to be to try and beat a throw at
04:52home plate.
04:53That's why I asked that.
04:54Could be.
04:54Okay.
04:55Yeah, no, it's a really good question.
04:56And it could be more, just like you said, the explosive nature of the sport,
05:00but probably more related to the early in the season than the weather.
05:04Okay.
05:05All right.
05:05Well, thank you, Doc, for the good news.
05:08Hopefully the Amazons – I mean, hopefully Lindor gets back,
05:11and he can kind of pick up where he left off.
05:15Always good to see you.
05:16Thanks, Raph.
05:17It's good to see you.
05:17Thanks, Raph.
05:18It's good to see you.
05:18Thanks, Raph.
05:19It's good to see you.
05:19Thanks, Raph.
