00:00Uh, time to talk about the New York Mets arm Layton, because we got an up close and personal
00:05look at them in South Florida over the weekend, and they are on a four game stretch that looks
00:11absolutely abysmal. The New York Mets are not scoring runs right now. They have not been scoring
00:17runs all season long. Their team OPS over the course of the entire year sits at 643. Now there
00:26are a handful of teams that are under a 700 team OPS. There are a handful of teams that are
00:30under
00:30a 680 team OPS. The third worst team OPS in baseball belongs to the Toronto Blue Jays,
00:38and it sits at 678. They are 28th in baseball at 678. 29th is the San Diego Padres at 657.
00:47So we're talking about a 21 point drop between 28th and 29th, and the Mets are in the bottom.
00:54They are 15 points back of the Padres at 643, 14 points to be exact. So you've got
01:01a whole clump of bad teams, team OPS wise. Then you've got the Padres that are a step down from
01:07the clump of bad teams. And then you get the Mets that are a step down from that other clump
01:11of bad
01:12teams. One other point that I want to make here before I turn it over to you is the New
01:17York Mets
01:17had a one at bat with runners in scoring position on Friday and Saturday. They've lost four in a row.
01:23The New York Mets won at bat with a guy standing at second base. It came in the ninth inning
01:29of
01:29Saturday's ball game. They did not have an at bat like that on Friday. And what do they do on
01:34Sunday
01:34and Monday? They turn around and go a combined O for 14 with runners in scoring position. So
01:39they weren't even getting guys to second base. And as soon as they started to, they forgot how to hit
01:45as well. I understand Lindor's not in the fold. Robert's not in the fold. Polanco's not in the fold.
01:50Alvarez isn't in the fold. And Soto's missed the last two with an in with an illness. But dude,
01:56this is the worst offense in baseball to watch. And I don't know if it's close.
02:00Do you can't really appreciate how horrific a lineup is until you're subject to watch it one
02:05through nine and in covering the game down in South Florida? Yeah, that is that is one of the
02:12more dormant lineups I can remember, especially when Juan Soto gets scratched right before.
02:17It's just crazy because even even with that, if you had the last year versions of some of these
02:24guys, I think it looks a little bit better. But even then, I started to try to talk myself into
02:27that.
02:27I'm like, not really. How much better could it really be? I think the biggest thing is Bo Bichette.
02:32But is Bo Bichette by himself going to be the difference between this team being good or bad?
02:36I don't know. I think the Polanco situation obviously stinks.
02:42I just think a big part of this, too, is.
02:46And this is the tough part, because we just talked about the Brewers replacing star arms
02:50in aggregate or just finding another star arm.
02:54And it feels like Sterns thought he could do that a little bit with this lineup,
02:57especially with Pete Alonso going in the other direction and saying, oh, well, yeah,
03:01we were going to lose Alonso, but we'll add Bichette and we'll add Polanco,
03:05you know, and we'll add a couple other guys and see how it goes.
03:09And I just don't think that really worked out.
03:11I do think there's been a lot of unfortunate circumstance here.
03:13I mean, when you look at the IL, Soto's missed time.
03:16Lindor has been out for most of the year so far.
03:18And then even like their insurance policy, like Jared Young tore his meniscus.
03:21He would probably be one of the better bats they've got right now in the lineup.
03:24Luis Robert, you knew what was going to happen, but it's immediately just been like
03:27worst case scenario there health wise.
03:29And I really thought Polanco would be good.
03:31So from that perspective, like I do feel for them a little bit, but it's not like
03:35they're doing anything particularly well.
03:38Every move is bad.
03:39And as a guy that's been a huge David Stearns fan, I've come away from this,
03:44just kind of thinking like sometimes great GMs just have a bad, bad year.
03:48I still think he's a really good executive, but I think he has really struggled to adjust
03:54to this new environment, which is you have, you don't know.
03:58It's I don't, you think it would be easier, right?
04:00You give a guy that's a really good bargain shopper, a ton of money to work with.
04:04And then he starts overpaying for stuff.
04:06And I think that's just kind of what's happened here as a great bargain shopper was given
04:10a lot of money and now he's overpaying for stuff.
04:13And now you're stuck and trying to, I guess, move around and maneuver the jigsaw puzzle.
04:19You mentioned Alonzo not being in the fold anymore.
04:21I do want to shout out Brandon Nimmo is having a solid year so far with the Texas Rangers.
04:26Like, dude, Nimmo in 51 ballgames is hitting 270 with a 780 OPS.
04:31So Nimmo will be such a net positive for this lineup that is running out in all rookie outfield.
04:36So I note that this is the earliest that the Mets have run out in all rookie starting lineup
04:40outfield since like the 70s.
04:43And Lee Mazzilli was in the outfield there.
04:45But it's Benj, it's Ewing, and it's Nick Morabito.
04:48I mean, now you've got other guys that are hanging out like Tyrone Taylor is starting
04:52ballgames in the outfield and Tyrone Taylor has been around for a minute, but there is
04:56an over-reliance on Benj and Ewing.
04:59When Soto was scratched, the top three in that lineup was Benj and his 650 OPS, Bichette
05:06and his 580 OPS, and then Ewing, who's 12 games into his major league career.
05:11It's really hard to look at.
05:13And I like watching Benj.
05:14I like watching Ewing.
05:16Morabito's fast.
05:17He hasn't really hit the ground running at the outset of his major league career, but
05:20we're only five games in.
05:22It's just something that is impossible to watch and stomach right now if I were a Mets fan.
