00:00uh everybody's coming out to the support now of uh carlos mendoza the met manager it's
00:05interesting to me uh gary cone the long time play-by-play voice of the new york mets quote
00:11he's probably the least culpable of everybody that has contributed to this morass of a season
00:17that the mets are in dot dot dot but they had to do something this is the move that teams
00:23make
00:24like then you have um harry rose the longtime radio voice of the new york mets in his last season
00:31as a play-by-play voice of the new york mets uh stepping down after a great run the mets
00:37managerial
00:38change felt inevitable following wednesday's doubleheader debacle but please don't lose
00:43sight of the fact that however much blame he's charged with for this season he deserves twice
00:48as much credit for the run in 2024 all right he's a wonderful man and a pleasure to work with
00:56i'll
00:56say that about carlos mendoza uh i've had him on my show many times is a good guy but not
01:04to be
01:04cavalier about that part of it so what like you're so what he's a good guy like he's gonna get
01:13paid
01:13which is good no one's taking his money away from him he was an interesting choice when they made the
01:17choice back in the day to hire him and there's a guy out there that i've long advocated for to
01:24be
01:24the new york mets manager who's actually back in new york uh managing an independent team now
01:30that i would hire in a second and that's wally backman i would hire wally backman i would have
01:38hired wally backman to be the interim manager because wally backman why i look the seasons are
01:44i'm not suggesting they make this miraculous second half run and get into the playoffs the
01:49winter world series and we treat him like we treat mike brown now as the nickname coach and he walks
01:55on
01:55water but he would have straightened everybody out now i can't speak to uh uh was it andy green
02:02who's taking over now as far as his temperament as a manager because i honestly don't know
02:07but i do know wally backman wally backman would have walked into that dugout today and said play
02:15time is over boys play time is over everybody is now being held accountable and that's what i love
02:24about wally backman again no guarantee of winning games but i'm not even sure it matters anymore but
02:30you've got a bad atmosphere in that clubhouse you've got a country club approach to playing baseball
02:35and you need a guy to come in there and tear some people new rear ends and wally backman would
02:41have
02:41did that now how long does that really work though craig like we've seen that people try it for the
02:46next
02:46three months and then and then not have him back for next season well i think depends on how the
02:52team
02:52responds to it you know the other thing about this is the guy that's now got the target on his
02:58ass
02:58rightfully so is the guy that hired mendoza and the guy that put this direct together and that's
03:04david stearns because at the trade deadline last year he was over he riffed on every decision he made
03:12at the trade deadline last year remember on june 18th the new york mets had the best record in all
03:19of
03:20baseball last year you know in the second half they the worst record and that's based on all the moves
03:26that he made david stearns right now you fast forward to this year and i ask you this i know
03:31you don't follow the mets as much as i do being uh you're a phillies fan jorge polanca no good
03:38no bo bichette who the phillies want to give a 10-year deal to they don't try to play third
03:44base
03:44marcus simian garbage lubob hasn't played since early april right freddie peralta average at best
03:54right so it's been one disastrous pick and signing after another and that's the guy that really uh
04:02should be on the hot seat but i believe on good authority that david stearns is coming back next
04:09year i do not think david stearns gets relieved of his duties where's the accountability then where's
04:16the accountability because you just mentioned accountability for the players and having a
04:19tough interim manager but if the gm's not going to give that manager anything to work with it's
04:24not going to work and here's the thing about the pochette move there were multiple players this
04:29all season that the mets were allegedly second on and then the phillies were going to sign pochette
04:33and they signed him basically saying well we have to get somebody and that was a disaster too
04:38that's not a gm with a plan for me he's the one who should go now he clearly can't get
04:45it done
04:46we saw what happened in milwaukee so be it but here he can't get it done in the big city
04:51and that
04:51farm system he's brought up a thousand rookies and all they do is lose they don't have a thousand
04:56more rookies to bring up how do you keep him long term if you want to keep him now through
05:01the end of
05:02the season but how does he come back craig and you look these fans in the eye and say that
05:06it's all good
05:07you're right and here's the other part about it like he got a five-year 50 million dollar contract he
05:12makes ten million dollars a year uh next year will be year four um he's obviously coming back for
05:17next year and then the question is you know he becomes kind of a less lame duck you know general
05:22manager uh because if you're steve cohen you're not extending him now no way he's going to get year
05:29four but you're not going to extend him until you see what he puts together and i think they're going
05:34to start selling off whatever pieces they can sell off and then the question is going to be a who's
05:39going to want to come here and be a who's available to come here
