Was this Brad Holmes best draft since 2023?
Transcript
00:00All right, let's do this.
00:01We've got some of the drafts, some of the NHL and NBA playoffs, including the Pistons,
00:06and some thoughts on our Tigers.
00:08It's the overreact gyms.
00:09You want to swap?
00:10Why you start there, Greg?
00:12Yeah, I do.
00:13I want to swap Jack Flaherty to the bullpen.
00:16He will end the year in the bullpen.
00:18He's struggling.
00:19ERA north of five.
00:20His whip is approaching two.
00:22He's really only a three-pitch guy, and his third time through the order numbers are atrocious.
00:28Opponents are hitting 300 with 1,000 OPS.
00:31The Tigers have Scooble, Valdez, Mize, Montero, and eventually JV or Melton to round out this rotation.
00:38Flaherty to the bullpen.
00:41It's not an overreaction, but I need to see what JV looks like when he comes back.
00:48We kind of always thought that he would be the guy at the end of the year.
00:51If he's on the postseason roster, that would be in the bullpen.
00:56Maybe he's not.
00:57Maybe the hip thing sorts itself out.
00:59He finds a rhythm.
01:01And Melton, I think, is the one where when he's able to come back, if he could be in that
01:06starting rotation and you get enough out of him, then, yeah, Flaherty moves.
01:11He's just been so inconsistent.
01:14All right.
01:14So I think this is an overreaction.
01:16They're paying him a lot of money.
01:18I don't think they would actually send him to the bullpen.
01:21And I think they would DFA him if this continues, like, you know, consistently.
01:25Don't forget, he had a nice start in Minnesota a few weeks ago, and he got zero run support.
01:29He's eating innings right now.
01:31And I just think he's been a roller coaster his entire career, and he's kind of doing – it's just
01:37been a little bit god-awful lately.
01:39I mean, my problem with this is when I see him as the starter, I feel like they're going to
01:44lose.
01:45That's just kind of my gut feeling, but I just don't think they'll ever move him to the bullpen.
01:50You got a smile out of me.
01:52I have a friend who has a partial Tiger ticket package, and he hates when he gets a Flaherty game.
01:57Yeah.
01:58He went to Cincy this weekend, and the game he had, the Flaherty game.
02:02Oh, my.
02:02That's like seeing Western in the Final Four.
02:05We're both trying to pull and tug at it.
02:10Riley Green will finish top 10 in AL MVP voting.
02:15He got votes two years ago, and that was as a five-war player.
02:18His approach is even better than that.
02:21Strikeouts are down.
02:22Walks are up.
02:23He's getting his pitches, and he's doing damage.
02:26Multi-hits in five of the last seven games.
02:28This will be a career year recognized with top 10 MVP votes.
02:34I think this might be a little bit of an overreaction.
02:37What's he going to be over 162?
02:40He started off not anywhere near a conversation for MVP votes.
02:47And in the last two weeks, I mean, his average is up above 300.
02:51His OPS is obviously up.
02:54Things are trending in the right direction, and he is now a threat in the lineup.
03:00But I need to see it over a longer period of time.
03:03I need to see more consistency.
03:05This is not an overreaction to me.
03:07I mean, you're only asking top 10.
03:09It's not like...
03:10He's not going to win it because McGonagall will.
03:11Right.
03:12Now he's going to be competing with McGonagall for votes from the same team.
03:15That could hurt them both.
03:17All right.
03:17Pump the brakes here.
03:193.30 after 100 at-bats?
03:21Two-war player, highest of any position player in the American League?
03:25I think Riley Green is here to stay.
03:28He'll slump like anybody.
03:30He'll probably go through a little bit of strikeout stretch again,
03:32because that's what baseball is.
03:34It's a gauntlet, the season.
03:36I'll point this out, too.
03:37They've played a super heavy National League schedule,
03:40and they play the Braves, the best team in baseball this week.
03:43But I really feel like this team's ready to take off,
03:45and if they take off, he'll start to get more attention and get votes.
03:50Activate the D.
03:51You knew this one was coming.
03:52The Pistons are going to lose the series to the Magic.
03:55Only three games, but when a series is tied 1-1,
03:58the Game 3 winner wins 75% of the time.
04:01And if you're saying, well, does that factor in 1-seeds?
04:03We've got to drop that the Pistons were 1-seed
04:05and leave that regular season crown in the regular season.
04:08It doesn't mean jack now.
04:10Who has been the better team?
04:12The Pistons' problems are real.
04:13The half-court offense is painful.
04:15Cade doesn't have enough help.
04:17Durin's being exposed, slash hemorrhaging millions.
04:20The Magic have options in their half-court offense.
04:23They've got multiple scorers,
04:25and the Pistons' defense, outside of a special eight minutes in Game 2,
04:28hasn't been special.
04:29No, and that's the biggest concern for me,
04:32is this is a team through 82 games
04:35that played high-level defense.
04:39They played with high effort,
04:41and now everyone else is playing at that same level.
04:44They have not found another gear to go to.
04:47Orlando has.
04:48We've seen other teams ramp it up,
04:51and they have that extra gear.
04:52I don't think this is an overreaction,
04:53and I'm not going to say that they're going to be eliminated,
04:55but they've been outplayed for a vast majority,
05:00and the Detroit Stars are just not showing up.
05:02I think it's an overreaction for now.
05:04I need to see the game tonight.
05:06You know, what's this team's backbone?
05:08Do they have one?
05:09Is there something that they can't?
05:11They've got to grind the magic to a pulp.
05:14It needs to be ugly, ugly basketball.
05:16They need to frustrate them,
05:17and I would even support some sort of
05:23physical altercation tonight to shift the series,
05:25and I wouldn't care if somebody got suspended for game five.
05:29Hey, you've got to go down swinging, right?
05:31Who's expendable?
05:33Who's okay to be out for a game?
05:36Well, hollering.
05:39Jalen Duren?
05:40No.
05:42Are we sure he's a positive?
05:43I'm with the mafia.
05:45Jalen Duren should be traded this summer.
05:47You can't max Andre Drummond again.
05:49He's not a Robin.
05:51He can't get his own shot.
05:52He's at 41% shooting this series,
05:54and he only plays at the basket.
05:56He can't shoot.
05:57He can't post.
05:58He's nothing special on defense.
05:59The best path forward is using him
06:01in a bigger trade this summer.
06:03I think this is a little bit of an overreaction.
06:06I'm not going to sit there and say he has to be traded.
06:09I don't think they max him.
06:10I think they give him a nice payday,
06:13and if it gets matched,
06:17the NBA is weird, right?
06:19Because if you lose them,
06:20you don't get a compensatory pick.
06:22You don't get those things.
06:23But if they're able to keep him
06:26and then go out and get that number two shooter,
06:30all of a sudden,
06:31I do think it makes him more usable
06:34and more dependable in a situation like this.
06:37I think it's an overreaction
06:38because, honestly,
06:39I don't know what the market is.
06:40I would definitely let him dangle
06:44and see what he gets offered.
06:46I'll tell you one thing I'm not doing
06:47and it's giving him five and 200.
06:49There is no way.
06:50I'm willing to lose him for nothing.
06:52Do you believe?
06:58This past weekend was Brad Holmes'
07:00best draft since 2023.
07:03Break it down.
07:04This was an identity draft,
07:05restoring who you are.
07:06They lost their way in 2025,
07:08and they learned a hard lesson.
07:09You get back to the offensive line,
07:11you impose your will.
07:13You go defense with five of seven picks.
07:15They even drafted an edge, John.
07:17I don't care about the trade-ups.
07:18You give up an extra fourth,
07:19an extra six,
07:20go get guys you like,
07:21and a couple pass-rushing de-tackles
07:23late feel like good gambles.
07:25This is best draft in three years.
07:28I'm not going to disagree with that.
07:30I don't think it's an overreaction.
07:31Now, the jury is still out
07:33on last year's draft
07:35because you had a productive player
07:37in Tate-Ratledge.
07:39Tylee Williams, yeah,
07:40but do you get more
07:41from Blake Miller?
07:43Do you get more
07:44from Derek Moore?
07:46And then you start going down the list
07:48and say,
07:49yeah, you know,
07:49I think Jimmy Rolder
07:52could actually be a starter this year.
07:54Is it contention with Malcolm Rodriguez?
07:56Do we think he's a starting NFL linebacker?
07:58Probably not.
07:59So it's,
08:00I do think that this is not an overreaction
08:02for what this team needed
08:04and what they had
08:06in the last two drafts.
08:08I don't think it's an overreaction either.
08:11I think the importance
08:12of tackle versus guard,
08:13so that's a win, Miller.
08:16I think the importance of an edge,
08:18Moore versus interior Williams,
08:20is, you know,
08:21addressing needs,
08:22taking care of needs here.
08:23I do think, though,
08:24like,
08:25what is Williams' development
08:27going to be in year two?
08:30I'm open to him
08:31improving significantly,
08:32but I think the wild card
08:34in this is to slaw.
08:35Like,
08:35if he really,
08:36like,
08:36were to step his game up
08:38and perform
08:39and make the Lions offense
08:40virtually impossible to defend,
08:42then it might swing it back
08:44to 2024,
08:44but I'm going to say
08:45it's not an overreaction for now.
08:48The Lions fixed their offensive line.
08:51They now have a much younger group,
08:52average age 25.
08:53They put real resources into it,
08:55right?
08:56They're number one free agent.
08:57They're number one pick in the draft.
08:59You've stabilized the middle.
09:00You got your bookend tackles.
09:01John,
09:02they fixed it.
09:04I think they did,
09:05and when,
09:07this is certainly not an overreaction.
09:09It's not just what they did in the draft.
09:11It's what they did in free agency
09:12that now,
09:13hey,
09:13the picture seems a little bit clearer.
09:15Larry Borm,
09:16I know that Brad Holmes said,
09:17yeah,
09:17and he does have starting in his resume,
09:20but it was down in Miami.
09:21I don't want him as the starter.
09:23I want him as the next Dan Skipper,
09:25that extra offensive lineman.
09:26The swing tackle developing some depth,
09:29and now all of a sudden,
09:30hey,
09:30there's great competition at that guard spot.
09:32Mahogany,
09:33Batch,
09:33Scruggs,
09:34Miles Frazier.
09:35You have depth
09:37and youth
09:39in those interior three
09:41and Blake Miller
09:42and
09:43Penny Sewell
09:44as your
09:46bookend tackles
09:47for the next seven to ten years.
09:49Yeah,
09:50thank you very much.
09:51Younger and more improved.
09:52I think it's not an overreaction.
09:54I think they were
09:57maybe a
09:5715 to 20th best offensive line
10:00in the league last year.
10:01That might be generous,
10:02probably more like 20th.
10:03And
10:04this
10:05will move them back
10:06to near top ten.
10:07Right.
10:08Just,
10:08when I say it's not an overreaction,
10:10I'm not expecting them
10:11to have the offensive line
10:12they had in 23 and 22.
10:14No.
10:14You know,
10:15not this year.
10:16But they,
10:16I think they have fixed it.
10:18It just won't look like that.
10:20I agree.
10:25The Cleveland Cavaliers
10:26will regret the James Harden trade.
10:28May already be regretting it.
10:29Back-to-back games
10:30with more turnovers
10:31than field goals made.
10:32A known playoff loser.
10:34It's round one.
10:34They're already seeing it.
10:36He will lose their series
10:37at some point
10:38and end their season
10:39at some point.
10:40Well,
10:40I mean,
10:40just look at
10:41all the teams
10:42that have traded for him.
10:43Have they,
10:44at some point,
10:45regretted it?
10:45Sooner or later?
10:46Yep.
10:47Yeah.
10:47It's not an overreaction.
10:48I think they eventually
10:49will regret it as well.
10:51Do you think they'll regret it
10:52if they get to the East Final?
10:54That would be the furthest
10:54they've been.
10:55Okay,
10:56so I think it's an overreaction
10:57for now.
10:58Two teams winning
11:00two home games
11:01in a series of a four
11:02versus a five.
11:03Look,
11:04he doesn't have
11:04the greatest track record.
11:06And I don't know
11:06why they would really
11:07regret it all that much.
11:08He's expected to opt out.
11:10You know,
11:11and he gave up Garland
11:12at a second.
11:13A younger player,
11:14you cashed out to go,
11:15what,
11:16the same as you've done
11:17the past few years?
11:20Do me.
11:21Got one more.
11:22The Buffalo Sabres
11:23are the best story
11:24in pro sports
11:25this year.
11:2614-year playoff drought
11:28for a big-time hockey city.
11:29They saw stars like
11:31Eichel,
11:31Ryan O'Reilly,
11:32and Sam Reinhardt
11:33all leave and win cups
11:34with three different teams.
11:36They fired their GM
11:37in December
11:38and have played
11:39720 hockey since.
11:41They won the Atlantic.
11:42They're a win away
11:42from advancing in the playoffs.
11:44And only three teams
11:45have better cup odds
11:46than the Buffalo Sabres.
11:52It's not an overreaction
11:54because
11:55I'm not sure
11:56what we're using
11:57as a time frame.
11:58How far back,
11:59how far in the future
12:00are we looking?
12:01It's not an overreaction
12:03right now.
12:03I do want to give you
12:05something that could be
12:07a better story.
12:08And it is the,
12:10what is it,
12:10the Sacramento Athletics?
12:12Or, I mean,
12:13they're playing
12:13in a minor league field.
12:14They have no home.
12:15Yeah.
12:15Eventually,
12:16they'll be in Vegas.
12:17But they're a team,
12:18last year,
12:19everybody left them to die.
12:21And this year,
12:22they're against all odds.
12:24Currently,
12:25first in the West.
12:27No kidding,
12:27they are.
12:28The AL West.
12:29And do they sit there
12:31and in spite of
12:32everything going on,
12:33do they find a way
12:35to win?
12:36They're outperforming
12:37the Rangers,
12:38the Mariners,
12:39who obviously we know
12:40we got bumped by
12:41in the postseason
12:42last year.
12:42The Angels,
12:43who with Mike Trout
12:44is on fire
12:46and the Houston Astros.
12:47So, yeah,
12:48I think they could
12:48take over
12:49what Buffalo is.
12:51I would say
12:52this is an overreaction
12:53now and I'll get to
12:54the reason why
12:54here in a second.
12:55But just to point out,
12:56they have,
12:56it's phenomenal
12:57what they've done
12:57and to see them
12:59go from no playoffs
13:00to top seed
13:01and going into Boston
13:03and destroying them
13:03last night.
13:04I think the answer
13:05to this question
13:05was supposed to be
13:06the Pistons.
13:08You know,
13:09and right now
13:10it's really hard
13:10to say that.
13:12If McGonagall wins
13:14MVP as a rookie,
13:16I don't know
13:16if anybody's ever
13:16even done that.
13:17That would be
13:17the greatest story.
13:18But I got to go with,
13:19you said story,
13:20so I'm going to
13:21twist your words
13:21here a little bit.
13:22I think the greatest
13:22story in sports
13:23right now is the
13:23variable Rossini stuff.
13:25I almost went
13:26that route too.
13:27It's hilarious.
13:28Is it his kid?
13:31All right,
13:32those are your
13:33overreactions,
13:3397.1.
