Learn from my games: Opening Play, Middlegame Planning,Tactics. and Endgame Play
Transcript
00:00:01Welcome to my part two of April games and what you can learn from them.
00:00:09We're going to be talking about, and I'm going to show you game one first.
00:00:14Both games won one and lost one, but the important thing is what did I learn from the games.
00:00:20Now, from the first game I played white and it's kind of a wild game, but also very, very, shall
00:00:33we say, very delicate.
00:00:37So we'll see some opportunities. We're also looking for opportunities missed and then better play.
00:00:43So let's start with it. What I'm going to do is I'm going to have I'm going to start set
00:00:49up a position.
00:00:50And discuss it and compare it to the engine. So I start off with d4, he plays 9f6, I play
00:00:549f3.
00:00:55This is a flexible system, so I can play any number of ways.
00:01:00e6, so we know he's probably not going to be in general and play g6.
00:01:05e3, c5, c3, so we're going to play the c3, coley.
00:01:11knight c6, bishop d3, d5, castle.
00:01:16Now, here's an important thing, and I'm going to put the kibitzer in now.
00:01:20The important thing is he's not going to play c4 because what happens after c4, I play bishop c2, right?
00:01:28And then he no longer has play against the d file, against the d file.
00:01:34So, at this point, if he plays c4, I'm going to show you the consequences.
00:01:39This is a positional mistake. Why?
00:01:42I'm going to play bishop c2. Now, what's going to happen is I'm going to play knight bd2 and e4.
00:01:48Okay, I'm going to develop after bishop c2. Okay, he could play knight e4 now, but what I'm going to
00:01:57do is I'm going to play knight bd2.
00:01:59So, if he really wants to go all in with f5, what we'll do is we'll just take that anyway.
00:02:06He'll take with the f pawn, right? Because we want to take towards the center. It'll be a half open
00:02:11file.
00:02:12Now, the disadvantage of this setup is that this diagonal gets opened.
00:02:20Now, we could even actually sacrifice a knight for two pawns with the thread of playing queen h5.
00:02:28So, he already played bishop d6. This is something kind of like you would have to consider this type of
00:02:35setup here.
00:02:35So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to undermine the center with f3.
00:02:39Notice his king has in castle. So, his king's in the center. I'm going to take advantage of this.
00:02:45His pawns are overreached. You know what I mean? They're overextended.
00:02:50So, after queen h4 now, he's threatening knight. So, he played g3 now on the queen.
00:02:56He played bishop takes g3 and then here's the trick is if I take back, he can get a draw,
00:03:05right?
00:03:05I take his check, right? Where am I going to go? I only have one move.
00:03:10I go to h3 and he can get a draw. This is just a draw, okay? Just a dead draw
00:03:15after king g1, queen g3, king h3, right?
00:03:30So, this would be a draw game, okay? So, instead of, instead of, so, after bishop takes g3, he's threatening
00:03:43mate. We'll play queen e2 now.
00:03:46The idea is we're preparing to play h takes g3. Notice that this h pawn is guarded twice.
00:03:52So, what happens is that after I take and he gives check, I can block. It's no longer a draw.
00:03:59Notice that the f pawn is guarded both by the knight and the rook. So, he won't win that.
00:04:05Even if the queen and the pawn are also attacking my pawn on f3. So, he'll play bishop back now
00:04:12thinking, okay, I won a pawn.
00:04:14But now I'm going to take into the center. The idea is that we're going to move our king over
00:04:20to h1, rook to g1.
00:04:21And then, so, if he takes right away, we'll take with the knight. We can take with, we can play
00:04:28the queen on f3, right?
00:04:31And then we'll just play bishop e2. The other rook goes over and we'll be fine.
00:04:36So, for example, a sample line would be, after f takes e4, would be bishop d7, right?
00:04:44Maybe he wants to go queen side. That makes sense.
00:04:46We're going to play e5 now. No longer has the option of attacking on there.
00:04:51Then he plays g5 now. He wants to play g5, g4, g3.
00:04:56We're going to keep hitting it. Oops, not b4, excuse me.
00:04:59We're going to hit in the center with b3, right?
00:05:04C takes b3, right? And then knight takes b3.
00:05:08Notice our bishop now on c1 can now move after e4.
00:05:13e4 is going to be happening and everything is going to start collapsing in.
00:05:18Yes, he's going to play castle queen side. This looks decent, right?
00:05:22Now knight c5, look at what we're going to do.
00:05:24We're going to have a counterattack.
00:05:26We're going to play queen b5 with the queen, right?
00:05:29Notice there's no bishop takes h2 or queen takes h2.
00:05:33And so our counterattack is going to come in with queen to b5.
00:05:37So to stop that, he'd have to move one of his knights first.
00:05:40So more direct is g4, and then we trade as possible.
00:05:47Now we can play queen b5 here, but the problem is after queen b5,
00:05:52I believe he has b6 and then the knight's moving anyway.
00:05:56So we're going to get rid of that bishop so we can play queen b5.
00:06:01So rook d7, the disadvantage of that is now he can swing the rook over to g7.
00:06:07Then we have queen g2 now.
00:06:08So now he doesn't have g3, okay?
00:06:12We have these bishops are good.
00:06:15Also, we can play rook b1.
00:06:18e4 is going to come in.
00:06:19So after he takes, we've got a battery over onto the e4 to c6 diagonal,
00:06:25all the way looking even past that to b7.
00:06:30So he swings over, like I was saying, because he wants to play g3.
00:06:33And when we counter with e4.
00:06:35Now, here the engine says that white is slightly better.
00:06:41Let's see how this goes.
00:06:43Bishop a5 hitting, attacking undefended pawn.
00:06:47Bishop d2 defending, developing the bishop, defending the pawn.
00:06:52Queen h3.
00:06:53Now, at this point, black can play chief g3.
00:06:59Defended twice.
00:07:01Or queen h3.
00:07:02The idea with queen h3 is after a take and he takes back, there it is with check.
00:07:07And it does stop me from playing.
00:07:09Like if I go to h1, it's going to be bad because I'm going to be permanently stopped there.
00:07:14So I'd probably play, you know, you know, permanently into the corner there
00:07:21because he can't come out on the g file, excuse me, unless I play rook g1, which is possible.
00:07:26Which I might do actually anyway.
00:07:28Because if I play king f2, it gives a check tempo and then go over.
00:07:34So queen h3.
00:07:35Now, the other option is g3.
00:07:38So the main move here is queen h3, right?
00:07:42So queen h3.
00:07:45And the idea is if I take, he takes its width check.
00:07:50So king h1, the idea is we can test it with rook to g1.
00:07:54He's going to play rook g2 now.
00:07:56And look what he has here.
00:07:58He has attack on this bishop threading a skewer.
00:08:02So when the bishop moves, he takes the other one.
00:08:04So he has to play rook ad1.
00:08:07Horse piece first, the rook.
00:08:08And then bishop takes c3.
00:08:11Why?
00:08:11Because if I were to take back now, he'll take this piece.
00:08:16And he's attacked twice.
00:08:18So we'll take, e takes d5 on his knight.
00:08:21Rook takes d2.
00:08:23Rook takes d2.
00:08:25Bishop takes d2.
00:08:27D takes c6.
00:08:28So we're attacking.
00:08:29You're hitting that.
00:08:31We're taking the knight.
00:08:32And then he has bishop c3 hitting this pawn.
00:08:37Now, here we have this intermezzo with taking his pawn.
00:08:41So playing c takes b7.
00:08:44Or we could play bishop b3, the thread of the check as well.
00:08:49So bishop b3 now, improving the bishop, threatening the check.
00:08:53Bishop takes d4.
00:08:55Notice the difference is when he takes, it's not with check.
00:08:59Bishop takes e6, check.
00:09:02There is king c7, which the engine mentions.
00:09:05And then I can play rook d1, representing the bishop.
00:09:10And then he'll counterattack my bishop, rook e8.
00:09:13And then I'll play bishop takes h3.
00:09:16So at the end of this, we have opposite-colored bishops.
00:09:19We count on what we have for material 3s.
00:09:22Excuse me, 1, 2, 3, 4, right?
00:09:24He has 3s.
00:09:25Well, he'll take one of them, or possibly both.
00:09:28So after bishop takes e5, right?
00:09:31Because if you take the pawn, I'll take your bishop.
00:09:33So, and then we'll play c takes b7.
00:09:38King will take, of course.
00:09:40And then we reassess again.
00:09:42What do we have?
00:09:42Opposite colors and two pawns on both sides of the board.
00:09:46This is an equal position.
00:09:47Probably drawn.
00:09:50The reason why opposite-colored bishops typically are drawn is because you can't control both color diagonals.
00:09:57You can only control one or the other.
00:09:59So, anyway, you see the long analysis that this is quite equal.
00:10:05Difficult to play though.
00:10:09So, he plays queen c7.
00:10:13Knight bd2.
00:10:15The idea is we want to control the e4 square and eventually go for the e4 push.
00:10:19Bishop d6, a3.
00:10:21Now, here is a very theoretical and tricky position.
00:10:27Because you would think it'd be better because he's thinking he would take on d4.
00:10:32You would think that e4 or d takes or a3 to stop the knife from going to b4 will be
00:10:45better.
00:10:46But according to the engine, d takes c5 better.
00:10:48Why?
00:10:49Because we don't have to play a3 because a3 would have, you know, have a little bit of a hole
00:10:56on b3.
00:10:56Because after this take back and then the queen goes to b6, of course, it would hit the knight.
00:11:02Which would tie down the queen to defend the knight.
00:11:04Yes, it didn't come to outpost on d4, but it would be a slight weakness.
00:11:09So, I play a3.
00:11:11It's suggesting d takes c, bishop takes c5.
00:11:14We have b4 now.
00:11:16So, this is actually the phoenix variation of the coley.
00:11:23Bishop d6.
00:11:25And then we have bishop b2.
00:11:27Look at this.
00:11:28We've got both bishops pointing over towards here.
00:11:30What we'd like to do is play b5, hit the knight, and then just storm down the board a4 and
00:11:37then play e4 also.
00:11:39So, we can play b5 and then e4.
00:11:42Or we, depending on, because we don't have any piece over on the a file.
00:11:47So, maybe play b5, dislodged knight, then play e4.
00:11:51With the idea, of course, well, you can't play e5 because it's guarded twice, but you see the idea.
00:11:56Knight to g4 now, because we're attacking this three times.
00:12:00Now, we have to move the pawn up because, of course, we can't hold the pawn over on h2.
00:12:05So, we play h3.
00:12:06Knight goes on g, goes back to e5 because the knight's under attack.
00:12:10We're hitting the bishop.
00:12:11We trade knights.
00:12:13So, he repeats that position.
00:12:15And then, he plays bishop b5 check.
00:12:20Pretty standard stuff, right?
00:12:22Bishop b7.
00:12:24Bishop takes.
00:12:26Queen takes.
00:12:27Sorry, not king takes.
00:12:28Queen takes.
00:12:32Right?
00:12:33And so, you see, right now, right, he's got a better piece over on e5.
00:12:41But, after c4, right, I might, so the b pawn might be an issue, but the idea at some point,
00:12:49we want to play c4 and attack that.
00:12:51Also, we'd like to play e4, queen e2, and rook, maybe rook ad1 or rook fd1, depending on what the
00:12:59situation is.
00:13:02So, here's the critical thing is, at this point, what would white do?
00:13:06Well, he can play c4 now.
00:13:09It's white to play, yeah.
00:13:11C4.
00:13:11You have to calculate what happens after bishop takes b4.
00:13:15Okay.
00:13:16What is white's idea?
00:13:17White's idea is, he wants to open up the bishop, right?
00:13:22And then, maybe play f4 to kick it away and then win this pawn.
00:13:27But, at the same time, play on the queen side, so if he ever castles queen side, it's dangerous.
00:13:33So, let's look at this, okay?
00:13:35The main move is d takes c.
00:13:37Right?
00:13:39And then rook c1.
00:13:41But, let's say black doesn't play that.
00:13:44Let's say he plays bishop takes b4, right?
00:13:46Looks like you're hanging the b pawn, right?
00:13:48But, what you didn't see is that the knight is undefeated.
00:13:53So, you cannot take on b4 because that knight is hanging, which is precisely why, okay?
00:14:02And so, of course, after that, of course, you're just the exchange down, so obviously that's wrong.
00:14:11So, he wants to play d takes c as the main.
00:14:14We're going to play rook c1, as I mentioned.
00:14:17After rook c1, he'll play b5 to hold onto the pawn.
00:14:21And then we're going to centralize our knight playing knight e4.
00:14:24Notice we're hitting the bishop twice, okay?
00:14:28He can play rook a d8 or he can play bishop c7.
00:14:34Bishop c7 now.
00:14:36The problem with rook a d8, by the way, is that he's going to give up the bishop for the
00:14:44knight.
00:14:44And then there might be an issue, like there's a trade, and then at the end of it, I play
00:14:50bishop takes knight.
00:14:52So, he has to play bishop c7, it's forced.
00:14:56And then we're going to kick the knight like I was saying.
00:15:00So, f4, and then instead of moving the knight in which he would lose the pawn,
00:15:07he wants a counterattack with queen d5 hitting my knight.
00:15:11Now, here's the problem with that.
00:15:12I believe, can I trade?
00:15:15Okay, because after the trade, we're hitting the knight again.
00:15:18So, we play knight c3 now, hitting the queen.
00:15:22And he trades queens.
00:15:24Then we take with this c rook because that file is unopened.
00:15:28And now, he has knight d3.
00:15:33So, you think maybe this is better because he has the outpost.
00:15:36What we're going to do is we're going to play knight takes b5.
00:15:39We're on the bishop now.
00:15:42So, if he plays knight takes b2, I play knight takes c7 check.
00:15:46Win the rook, he wins this one, I win that one.
00:15:48And then later on after king d7, he'll win the other knight back.
00:15:52So, for example, knight takes b2.
00:15:56Right? Here's the sample line.
00:15:58After knight takes b5, right?
00:16:00He played knight takes b2.
00:16:02So, he'd take the knight, you know, preemptively.
00:16:06I would take his bishop with check.
00:16:09Notice he can't play king d8.
00:16:12So, king e7 now.
00:16:13We have connected rooks after I...
00:16:16Now, I notice that after knight takes rook, he can take back.
00:16:21Or, of course, he can take my rook first.
00:16:25What he wants to do, what white has an option.
00:16:29How about I attack your knight first?
00:16:32Notice that my knight's no longer under attack.
00:16:35Or it's not under attack.
00:16:37And then he'll attack mine.
00:16:38So, it's pretty even.
00:16:40It's a pretty even combination.
00:16:42Probably knight takes e6 to get a pawn out of it.
00:16:45King takes...
00:16:46I take the pawn...
00:16:48I mean, I take his rook knight.
00:16:51And then rook hda.
00:16:54So, it's about equal here.
00:16:58Black's advantage is he's gonna have...
00:17:00He's gonna have the d-file.
00:17:02And then there is a passed pawn on the c-file.
00:17:05So, what white's gonna do here is he's gonna move his king into play.
00:17:09Get closer to this passed pawn.
00:17:11And then blockade it.
00:17:13So, he's gonna play rook to c2.
00:17:15Rook over and king up on it.
00:17:17So, to be careful when you push.
00:17:19Because immediately rook c2.
00:17:20And then rook fc1 to try to win the pawn.
00:17:25So, what he'll do is he'll play rook d3.
00:17:29King e2.
00:17:30Notice the king's coming closer, as I said.
00:17:32King to f5 now.
00:17:35Right?
00:17:35So, maybe he wants to play king e4 and double up on that rook.
00:17:40We play rook d1 now.
00:17:42Put in question, okay, what do you want to do with this rook?
00:17:45King e4, as I said.
00:17:47And then we play rook takes d3.
00:17:49C takes d3 with check.
00:17:51And then, of course, king d2.
00:17:55Notice the king cannot come out on f3.
00:17:57We have a 2 to 1 majority on the queen side.
00:18:00So, we'd like to proceed by playing a4, b5, a6, b6, and so on.
00:18:08And then, after all of this, right?
00:18:11Then we're gonna play rook b3.
00:18:14At some point, we'll also play rook b3.
00:18:16What we don't want to do is allow him to play rook c2 check to skewer the king so he'll
00:18:23win that.
00:18:23Pawn on g2.
00:18:25So, at this point, the engine considers this equal after king d2.
00:18:29You do see why he played king f2 in the first place.
00:18:34Okay?
00:18:34So, king f2 was a necessary move so we can stop this pawn push and also the rook coming down.
00:18:42So, a3.
00:18:44So, d takes c5 is definitely interesting.
00:18:51A3.
00:18:53Not a bad move, but we look at engine moves.
00:18:57It's only disadvantage, like I said, is that create a slight hole on b3, even though probably d takes c5,
00:19:05knight b3, knight bd4 anyway.
00:19:08But, the idea with a3 is if he takes on d4, right?
00:19:12We can play c takes d4, right?
00:19:16Because we want to get this e4 push because it has a thread of playing e5.
00:19:21Although, not right away, but that's the idea.
00:19:23We want to get some diagonals open and also get some play on the e-file.
00:19:29So, the idea is you play c takes d, c takes d.
00:19:32Knight b4 is not playable because a takes b.
00:19:34So, it's not really a bad move, but it may not be the theoretically best move.
00:19:39But, here is where white makes a mistake, c4.
00:19:42Why?
00:19:43Well, you're giving up tension in the center, yes.
00:19:46Okay, maybe he likes to play knight a5 to b3.
00:19:50But then, of course, then what I take, he can't put it there because I have it covered twice.
00:19:55Now, my mistake at this point is I play bishop e2.
00:19:59And bishop e2, because I'm thinking, okay, I can't get the queen on d3.
00:20:03I'm thinking, okay, I want to hit this a second time.
00:20:07I'm thinking, if it's on c2, how can I hit it a second time?
00:20:10But, c2 is actually better because it's a better diagonal.
00:20:14So, technically, bishop e2 is a mistake, but you can see the reason behind it.
00:20:20Better move was bishop c2, keeping this long diagonal.
00:20:25So, after castle, we are able to get e4 in.
00:20:29And then we're going to do standard trades here.
00:20:31You know, d takes e, knight takes e, knight takes e, bishop takes e4.
00:20:37And then, yes, he'd like to come in on b3.
00:20:41And then, of course, after rook to b1, knight b3.
00:20:45So, this is the disadvantage of playing a3 is because you get a hole on b3.
00:20:49And then, after rook e1 here, we're going to play on the e-file.
00:20:56Computer considers this to be equal, but one disadvantage of the position for white is that you've got this outpost.
00:21:02Now, what he might do is try to target this c-pawn, although it can be defended with a b
00:21:08-pawn.
00:21:10But here's the problem is that this pawn is pinned because the bishop's on that same diagonal.
00:21:18And if you were to move the pawn, of course, you'd lose the rook.
00:21:21So, I played bishop e2.
00:21:23He played g5.
00:21:24Super aggressive.
00:21:25Now, one thing you don't want to do in this position, you don't want to take on g5, why?
00:21:33Well, so when we consider options at this point, you want to look at the last move.
00:21:37What was the purpose of the last move?
00:21:39The purpose of the last move was to play on the g-file to open it up.
00:21:43So, that way, for example, if I play knight takes g5, which is a mistake.
00:21:49Not only can he play rook g8 at some point, but he has, he can win this h-pawn.
00:21:56So, that's check, king over, and then you see rook g8.
00:22:00This is going to be like a storm here.
00:22:03Then knight h3, that's true.
00:22:06But you see, you don't want to have open files to your king.
00:22:09This is a bad idea.
00:22:11There's knight e7.
00:22:14So, yeah, he might play knight a5 with the idea of going to b3.
00:22:18It's possible.
00:22:19I'm going to play b4.
00:22:21He'll take in passing.
00:22:23I'm pretty sure white can survive this, but this is not ideal.
00:22:27You don't want to just give him the pawn.
00:22:29Because in taking that pawn later on, he had to move it anyway, and you give him the open file.
00:22:35So, it's a bad idea to be playing knight takes g5.
00:22:39Okay.
00:22:40So, I play b3 now.
00:22:42I want to hit.
00:22:43The whole point was the pawn on c4 is overextended, and I want to hit it.
00:22:48So, he plays g4 now.
00:22:52And I play knight e5.
00:22:54He thinks knight e5 is better.
00:22:56Now, I thought, so I played knight e1, which was actually the computer's second best move.
00:23:03The problem I saw with knight e5 was that he's just going to win the material.
00:23:09So, knight takes, pawn takes, bishop takes, then what?
00:23:13Because if you play f4, he'll take in passing, and then he'll have this g file open.
00:23:18Notice he's got bishop d7, rook g8, castle queenside, and he's going to attack on the g file.
00:23:23So, although, wait, the computer suggests that.
00:23:29I can take in passing, then what happens?
00:23:32I will take, hitting the bishop.
00:23:35So, it goes back.
00:23:38Okay.
00:23:38Okay.
00:23:39Maybe b takes c4, rook to g8 now.
00:23:47Okay.
00:23:48C takes d5, e takes d5, e takes d5, e takes d5.
00:23:57Okay.
00:23:57Maybe the idea is now to play bishop e6 and knight e4, maybe.
00:24:04So, you play a4 now.
00:24:07Bishop h3.
00:24:08Notice we can't take it because it's pinned, so we're going to play bishop e5 check.
00:24:14And then we can block with the knight.
00:24:20Rook f2, so we're hitting this, we're defending it twice.
00:24:24This is kind of all over the board, but I like castle queenside at this point.
00:24:32Kind of a messy position, but I think I would prefer to play black at this point.
00:24:39Probably.
00:24:41But, yeah.
00:24:43Now, e5, I play knight e1.
00:24:46This is a difficult move.
00:24:48Do you want to play knight e?
00:24:48Now, the advantage of knight e1 is, I say, okay, this pawn is overextended.
00:24:52I'm going to take with my bishop.
00:24:55Okay.
00:24:55When he takes back, I take with the queen.
00:24:58And now we don't have rook g8 because I can take.
00:25:03The disadvantage here now is bishop takes h2, king h1.
00:25:08So, he's won the pawn.
00:25:09I played g3.
00:25:15Here's the tricky thing about this.
00:25:17So, this is forced, right?
00:25:18Bishop takes two.
00:25:19You can't take, so you have to come here.
00:25:22g3.
00:25:25Amazing how g3 is a blunder.
00:25:28Very amazing.
00:25:32Well, problem with g3, I think, is you block in your bishop and then the attack loses steam.
00:25:39So, c takes b3 now, he's saying instead.
00:25:43We have g3, like I was saying, to, you know, to trap the bishop in.
00:25:49Of course, we do have bishop takes g3 anyway.
00:25:54f takes, queen takes, and then I think I have, like, rook g1.
00:26:00No, rook takes, no, I have rook takes f6.
00:26:04And then I think I have bishop takes g4, and then I have knight f3, and then queen g1.
00:26:10So, maybe queen h4.
00:26:13The question is queen h4, queen g1.
00:26:18Looks like we're losing the rook, right?
00:26:22Knight takes b3.
00:26:25This is very curious.
00:26:27Okay, and then you have these pawns rolling down.
00:26:30So, it's a difficult position to play out as white.
00:26:35g3, though.
00:26:39g3, questionable.
00:26:43Looking back, I think, from the previous game, I think knight e5 probably would have been better.
00:26:50But probably, like I said, g5, even, yeah, going back a move, probably even e4.
00:27:01I think that's what I was originally planning.
00:27:04And then the threat now is to play e5.
00:27:09So, after g4, e5, g takes f, knight takes f.
00:27:16So, it's defended twice.
00:27:18Bishop takes e.
00:27:20Pawn takes e.
00:27:22Right, knight e4.
00:27:25This is probably the better way of playing this.
00:27:27You have bishop f4.
00:27:28And then we can play bishop g3.
00:27:31You're probably fine.
00:27:32Because when he takes, if you were to take on g3, right?
00:27:36We just take with maybe the f pawn, blockading it.
00:27:39So, we have two pawns in that same one.
00:27:41Defended by the anchor pawn on h2.
00:27:43So, e7, knight d2.
00:27:50Looking to trade off a knight.
00:27:52And then we have, and then, now his king isn't so secure as it seemed to be.
00:27:58Bishop d7, now preparing to go queen side.
00:28:01We trade this.
00:28:02He takes.
00:28:04And then bishop h5 now.
00:28:07So, the idea is if he casts his queen side, we take on f7.
00:28:11He doesn't have bishop.
00:28:12I mean, he doesn't have rook g8, because I'll just take it.
00:28:16So, we have knight g6.
00:28:19Queen g4.
00:28:26Let's see.
00:28:27So, and then if he takes on f4, then what?
00:28:30He takes f4.
00:28:31Okay.
00:28:32Now we have a problem, because now we're attacking this twice.
00:28:35So, we'll have to cast on queen side.
00:28:38We'll have to give up the pawn.
00:28:39We'll have to give up this.
00:28:42Get the e pawn.
00:28:44And we're also going to take on f7.
00:28:46Bishop a4.
00:28:48Rook f e1.
00:28:51Right.
00:28:52So, it's not so clear what black's going to do from this.
00:28:55This looks like when we add up the material here.
00:28:58Consider what we have for material.
00:29:01It's actually seven pawns against six.
00:29:04Same color bishop.
00:29:07And it's not going to be easy to get an attack in, because I think I can play something like
00:29:12maybe g3.
00:29:14g3.
00:29:15If you were to play this.
00:29:17And also, these two pawns are going to drop and possibly even h1 as well at some point.
00:29:23So, the engine actually considers this to be winning for white.
00:29:28I think the key approach is to play e4.
00:29:33So, e4 is my key move here.
00:29:38So, anyway.
00:29:40So, this is a little kind of a messy position.
00:29:42After g3.
00:29:44Problem with g3 is now.
00:29:45I'm going to play f.
00:29:46I can play f4 here.
00:29:50I can also play.
00:29:52Okay.
00:29:52So, the move I played was the engine's second best.
00:29:58What do you consider second best move?
00:30:00B takes c.
00:30:01H5.
00:30:02C takes d.
00:30:03What we want to do is open up the center.
00:30:05So, we have a counter attack.
00:30:07E takes d.
00:30:08So, either I'm going to take again on e6 with a threat of taking on f7.
00:30:14Or he's going to take back and the e-file is going to be open.
00:30:18So, again, we play c4.
00:30:20Now, the question is here, what's the best move?
00:30:24So, go back and say, okay, what's the critical best move?
00:30:27Well, we can play knight d3 here.
00:30:31Defends on f2.
00:30:32Right?
00:30:34Now, the queen is defending that bishop on h2 just in case the pawn does take on f2.
00:30:40So, you could play like knight e4.
00:30:43I'm going to play knight f4 now.
00:30:47Notice we're going to be attacking on the d-file.
00:30:52So, after queen d8, defending the d-pawn, we can trade off this knight.
00:30:57And he takes back.
00:30:59Queen c2.
00:31:00You see, there's going to be counter attack.
00:31:02The king's in the center.
00:31:04So, black's attack kind of fizzles out after g3.
00:31:08And we have this counter attack.
00:31:09So, queen c2.
00:31:10We can play bishop f5.
00:31:12That's true.
00:31:13Defend that.
00:31:13Bring out a piece.
00:31:14That part is good.
00:31:16And then we play knight h3.
00:31:19Curious.
00:31:21So, after bishop takes.
00:31:24G takes.
00:31:27Queen h4.
00:31:30Ooh.
00:31:31Queen h4.
00:31:33G2.
00:31:36There's g2 immediately.
00:31:38King takes.
00:31:39Thread is on the bishop.
00:31:40Rook g8.
00:31:42But then I...
00:31:42Do I take the bishop now?
00:31:46And then what?
00:31:47Queen d6.
00:31:49Check.
00:31:50King h1.
00:31:53Queen e6.
00:31:55And king h2.
00:31:56Okay.
00:31:56So, that's equal.
00:31:58That's the equal line because what's going to happen is he's going to try to attack the
00:32:03pawn and we're going to have to defend it.
00:32:05And then after that, he's going to play queen d6.
00:32:07Check.
00:32:08The other...
00:32:09He could continue with castle queenside, of course.
00:32:12But I think after queen b1 now, he has to be concerned about losing the h pawn possibly.
00:32:19And then I think what I would do is I'd play bishop g4 after I take the pawn.
00:32:24So, that's not so simple.
00:32:28But anyway, I play c4 instead of knight d3.
00:32:32H4 now.
00:32:32I'm suspecting he's going to come with an avalanche of pawns coming down.
00:32:36Now is my time to take the pawn before he has this both pawns going forward.
00:32:43So, f takes g.
00:32:44Queen e7.
00:32:46Okay.
00:32:47So, what we're going to do is...
00:32:51Actually, what I thought to play in this position was knight f3 to defend the pawn.
00:32:56It also would hit the bishop.
00:32:57The problem is...
00:33:00Is...
00:33:01He wants to play h takes g.
00:33:04Or even bishop...
00:33:05Maybe bishop takes g3.
00:33:07And with the idea of h3.
00:33:10It's going to take some time to do that.
00:33:12But...
00:33:12The engine has some interesting idea here.
00:33:17Engine thinks rook takes f6 with white to play.
00:33:22That's curious.
00:33:23We're going to sack the rook, but for what?
00:33:28Queen takes...
00:33:28C takes d.
00:33:30So, we get the knight and the pawn for the rook.
00:33:33On the knight.
00:33:37Bishop takes g3.
00:33:39So, that's a trade of pawns.
00:33:41Knight e4 now hitting the bishop and the queen.
00:33:44So, we have some counter play.
00:33:46Thing is, we don't want to take the knight because that would be a discovery check.
00:33:50But we want to get the queen out of the way.
00:33:52Queen g6.
00:33:54Not queen g5.
00:33:56D now.
00:33:57And then we take the knight.
00:33:58Similar to the game.
00:34:01So, I'm glad that actually what I was thinking was correct.
00:34:04But I'm just thinking counter play, counter play.
00:34:07And then move the knight to push the queen away.
00:34:10And then be able to move the other knight to defend.
00:34:15And so on.
00:34:16So, knight g4.
00:34:18Knight d3.
00:34:20Bishop f5.
00:34:22Now, here is what White wants to do.
00:34:25He wants to keep counter attacking.
00:34:27C takes d5.
00:34:30Okay.
00:34:31He plays bishop takes d3.
00:34:33Now, here's the problem is that you want to keep this bishop on f5 on the board.
00:34:40Because you want it to be able to...
00:34:42Not only course is your knight attack, but you want to get a bishop attacking the square on g2.
00:34:53But, as it is, bishop takes d3.
00:34:55Bishop takes d3.
00:34:57But here, of course, now we have control of the diagonal.
00:35:01We can...
00:35:02There's a whole bunch of things now we can do.
00:35:04We can play knight f3.
00:35:05We can get the bishop out.
00:35:07Suddenly, the game's going to turn around.
00:35:08And as it's showing here now, it's showing White is actually winning.
00:35:14Very curious, right?
00:35:16So, you say, well, what if he plays knight takes f2?
00:35:18Well, that's what the game...
00:35:20How did the game continue?
00:35:22Knight takes, rook takes, g takes.
00:35:24So, you say, okay, I'm giving up the exchange.
00:35:28But guess what?
00:35:31I'm going to cover it just in case he tries to play f1, right?
00:35:34To promote.
00:35:35So, but also now, this bishop has to either move, which will take him, which will prevent the pawn from
00:35:43moving.
00:35:43Or he's threatening...
00:35:45Or after knight f3, right?
00:35:48I'm threatening to take the bishop at some point.
00:35:51So, after he takes back, right?
00:35:54Okay, rook for knight, right?
00:35:56I take his knight.
00:35:58Okay?
00:35:59So, it's fine.
00:36:01Now, I thought he'd be fancy and play bishop to g1.
00:36:05Here, I thought it wasn't best at this point.
00:36:10Simply because we've got a half-open file.
00:36:13We want to see...
00:36:14What we could do is play rook g8 and then play either...
00:36:20Play queen c6, attacking it twice.
00:36:22So, what we need to do is play bishop e4 and then bishop f3.
00:36:27Or knight f3, hitting this twice.
00:36:29So, white has his defenses.
00:36:31Also, we've got this bishop coming out.
00:36:33And both rook and queen can also defend.
00:36:36So, bishop g1.
00:36:38Not recommended.
00:36:41I can see how...
00:36:43What he wanted to do was...
00:36:45Prevent the king from taking it.
00:36:47But here also can take...
00:36:49But here's the thing is after he...
00:36:52For example, after I play knight f3, right?
00:36:56I'm hitting this twice.
00:36:58And, of course, you can't promote because the queen would take.
00:37:00So, knight f3...
00:37:02Let's see.
00:37:03What is the engine?
00:37:03Yeah, the engine agrees.
00:37:05Knight f3.
00:37:08So, we're hitting this twice.
00:37:10Rook g8.
00:37:12C takes b.
00:37:13Now, here's the thing is you say, okay, well, he has the rook on g file.
00:37:17Okay, but I'm attacking his other rook.
00:37:20What does he have?
00:37:22We blocked this diagonal.
00:37:23He doesn't have anything.
00:37:24That's why I think it was a mistake to take on d3.
00:37:27Rook to b8 now.
00:37:31I think queen takes would have been better just because...
00:37:34He would have played on that diagonal.
00:37:37Probably...
00:37:37Queen takes b7 was probably better, but...
00:37:41He plays rook b8.
00:37:43And I think what he wants to do is he wants to...
00:37:46He wants to take and prevent me from playing bishop b2.
00:37:49And then if I play bishop d2, probably to play rook to b2.
00:37:54So, here I played the best move.
00:37:57Queen a4 check.
00:38:00Okay?
00:38:00It's an important move to see why.
00:38:02Because we need to see...
00:38:04We need to get some...
00:38:06We need to get immediate counter play.
00:38:09Queen a4 check.
00:38:10King to d8.
00:38:12Bishop b2.
00:38:13And gain us some time to get our bishop out.
00:38:16So, after he takes the pawn, like he did, you can play rook to c1.
00:38:21You don't have to worry about him taking...
00:38:26Yeah, because we have the bishop on d3.
00:38:28We don't have to worry about taking that.
00:38:30Because what's going to happen is...
00:38:33Let's say he gets the rook on there on...
00:38:36Right?
00:38:36Let's say he takes...
00:38:37Right?
00:38:38Well, you don't have rook b1.
00:38:40But even if he got to c1, we can still block...
00:38:43Well, yeah.
00:38:44He doesn't have rook b1.
00:38:46And then, of course, I'm going to take the bishop.
00:38:50So, we gain the tempo.
00:38:52So, we get the bishop out.
00:38:53And then we're also threatening the queen.
00:38:56So, queen d6.
00:38:58Queen to c4.
00:39:00Let's see if you like queen c4.
00:39:01Actually, I think queen a5 was better.
00:39:05I remember, right?
00:39:06Queen a5, yeah.
00:39:09Queen a5 is a little bit more forcing because we're giving check to the king.
00:39:13So, when he moves, we're going to play bishop c3 with the idea of bishop b4.
00:39:19So, yeah, bishop c3.
00:39:23Good move.
00:39:24The idea is bishop c4 skewering the queen and the king, right?
00:39:29So, yeah.
00:39:36You could play rook g4.
00:39:38But then, of course, I have lots of moves here.
00:39:42I mean, for one, I have bishop b4.
00:39:44Of course, you can exchange it off.
00:39:46I also have knight.
00:39:47I also have queen takes h5.
00:39:50Which is kind of more immediate because now we're on the rook.
00:39:52We also have the third of playing bishop e4.
00:39:55Yes, he could trade this off and get the bishop and the pawn for the rook.
00:39:58But now we're on his other rook.
00:40:01Right?
00:40:01So, we want to play that steady.
00:40:03Queen takes h5.
00:40:04Queen g3.
00:40:06Right?
00:40:06So, it looks like, okay, he's going to get h3 in.
00:40:10But here's the problem is after queen c5 check, queen, where's he going to go?
00:40:18So, if he goes to d7, we just have a mate sequence.
00:40:23Right?
00:40:23Bishop f5.
00:40:25King e8.
00:40:26Queen c8 check.
00:40:28We're on both the king and the rook.
00:40:31King e7.
00:40:32And when we take the rook, that's also with check.
00:40:35And king f6.
00:40:37And then bishop takes rook.
00:40:39Notice he doesn't have queen h3.
00:40:42He doesn't have queen h2 checkmate because knight takes.
00:40:48And so, after he takes the bishop, we're going to have a discovered check with d5.
00:40:54Okay?
00:40:54Meanwhile, of course, at some point, I will play knight takes g1.
00:40:59Take that.
00:41:00Okay?
00:41:01So, if he takes back, we take that.
00:41:02It doesn't matter.
00:41:05We do need to be careful he doesn't have this mate on h4 or h5.
00:41:10So, king g6.
00:41:13Knight e5 check.
00:41:16Is a fork.
00:41:17So, that's winning.
00:41:18You just straight up win the queen, but we can continue on if you want.
00:41:23King h5.
00:41:26Queen takes f7 check.
00:41:28Because we're going for the mate.
00:41:30King h4.
00:41:31Knight takes g4.
00:41:33Right?
00:41:34This becomes a queen or a rook.
00:41:37Doesn't matter.
00:41:38Right?
00:41:38We take a6.
00:41:42Just a random move.
00:41:43There's no other move on the board.
00:41:45We're going to give another check.
00:41:47So, it's like, okay, where do you have left over to go?
00:41:50King g3.
00:41:52And then we figure out that the ending is with rook f3.
00:41:57You take the rook.
00:41:59And queen g6 mate.
00:42:02So, yeah.
00:42:03Queen a5 certainly.
00:42:04Queen c4 wasn't the right move.
00:42:07But it was a slight error.
00:42:10But queen a5 just wins.
00:42:13It's a winning line.
00:42:15But even after queen c4.
00:42:17King e7 anyway.
00:42:18Because he figures that the check's coming anyway.
00:42:21And then bishop c3.
00:42:24And the idea, of course, is that I'm going to play after queen c4.
00:42:28I support the bishop e4.
00:42:29So, if rook takes, I can take with the queen.
00:42:33And then when we look at the material.
00:42:35Right?
00:42:35So, we give up the rook for the bishop.
00:42:37Right?
00:42:38And then this gets traded.
00:42:39We have a pawn.
00:42:41And what else do we have?
00:42:42We have a bishop.
00:42:43We have a knight and a bishop versus the bishop.
00:42:46Right?
00:42:46How many pawns do we have?
00:42:48Well, we have one, two, three, four pawns versus three.
00:42:51So, we have an extra pawn.
00:42:53And then we're going to threaten even just to win the other pawn.
00:42:59An f2 or just straight out win the bishop on g1.
00:43:03So, that wins for me.
00:43:05So, here's some key points to remember for the game.
00:43:09First of all, when we look at this.
00:43:12Black's approach was to be flexible.
00:43:14D4.
00:43:15Notice he didn't play c4 on the move.
00:43:17Nothing wrong with it.
00:43:18Just was a different approach.
00:43:20After e6.
00:43:21White still played e3.
00:43:23Was flexible.
00:43:24You can still play the queen's gambit.
00:43:25Or you can still play c4.
00:43:29After c5.
00:43:31White decided to play c3.
00:43:33You know, this is a Coley system.
00:43:35Bishop d3.
00:43:36Notice this was flexible.
00:43:38Got the bishop out.
00:43:39And then white immediately castled.
00:43:41You saw that.
00:43:42Okay?
00:43:43Now.
00:43:44He played queen c7.
00:43:47Avoided the immediate overextension with c4.
00:43:52So, after knight b2.
00:43:53B6.
00:43:54White made a slight error with a3.
00:43:57Creates a hole on b3.
00:43:59But d takes c is more in the spirit of what this opening is doing.
00:44:05So, d takes c5 would have been better.
00:44:08Okay?
00:44:10Um.
00:44:10Also, after c4.
00:44:12So, I play e3.
00:44:13Play c4.
00:44:14Bishop b2 was a mistake.
00:44:16Because we needed to keep the bishop on c2 to be able to push on e4.
00:44:20Um.
00:44:22It was good that he didn't play knight g5.
00:44:24Otherwise, he would open up the g file against the king.
00:44:27That would have been bad.
00:44:28Um.
00:44:29B3.
00:44:29G4.
00:44:30Better to play knight e5.
00:44:32Now, the thing is, what we want to do is we don't want him to just move a knight back
00:44:38and then he wins the pawn.
00:44:39What we want to do is say, okay, fine.
00:44:41He's going to have to win that.
00:44:43Win that.
00:44:44So, after f4, guess what happens?
00:44:47Right?
00:44:48We immediately contest that not allowing him to immediately win that.
00:44:51So, we can play knight takes f3.
00:44:54Okay.
00:44:54Now, you can't win the pawn on h2.
00:44:56Bishop pass, come back, and then we cast our, uh, continue with our counterplay.
00:45:02So, even you get the rook in play, which is a plus for him.
00:45:06We just continue with the counterplay.
00:45:07C takes d, e takes d.
00:45:11Right?
00:45:12And a4.
00:45:13Well, the idea with a4, of course, is we're supporting the check, letting our bishop come
00:45:17out on a3.
00:45:18And, of course, all these pieces for black are not out.
00:45:22So, this is a mistake for him.
00:45:24So, of course, he won the pawn.
00:45:25Uh, and g3, of course, not a good idea because there's no more counterplay.
00:45:30And this bishop becomes bad.
00:45:33Uh, if you fast forward, uh, it was a little better play knight d3 because we can influence,
00:45:40um, e5.
00:45:42And also, uh, we can get, uh, pieces.
00:45:45Like, for example, 93 is on a better square.
00:45:48We'll control e5.
00:45:50And also, even possibly go to f4.
00:45:57Um, yeah.
00:46:01So, of course, of course, this idea of bishop g1, and this, after all this counterplay I take, was no
00:46:11good because now it becomes a liability.
00:46:14Yes, he wants to checkmate on h2.
00:46:16I get it.
00:46:17But then, simple knight f3 sees it.
00:46:19That's the threat.
00:46:20I get it.
00:46:21Rook g1.
00:46:22Okay, I see that.
00:46:23But here's the thing.
00:46:24After, I'm going to take, the minute he tries to attack, he loses a piece.
00:46:30And so, yeah, it would have been better to play queen takes b7, but this is the position he got
00:46:34after all this counterplays.
00:46:36Once I was able to play knight f3, right, you can't remove that knight.
00:46:42Now I've defended it, and what I'm going to do is I'm going to get rid of the bishop.
00:46:46So, it looks like an aggressive move until you realize that you can just play knight f3.
00:46:51Also, it was better at the end.
00:46:53The other mistake was I should have just got the immediate check in and sort of won the game earlier
00:47:00with queen a5 check.
00:47:02So, that's pretty much it.
00:47:06So, let's go to our second game.
00:47:09Now, with the second game, I lost the game, but there was a lot to be learned from this game.
00:47:16Well, it's not a matter of did you win or did you lose the game.
00:47:19It's a matter of what can be learned from the game to play the best quality game that you can.
00:47:24So, in this game, I played white.
00:47:26This was my game, too.
00:47:27So, I played d4, d5, c4, immediate queen's gambit.
00:47:30So, knight f6, c takes d, knight takes d, e4, right?
00:47:35We're getting space in the center.
00:47:37Throw down the knight, knight to b6, okay?
00:47:41Knight c3, g6, okay?
00:47:43So, this is a viable, this is definitely a viable way of playing it.
00:47:47We play g6, knight f3, bishop g7, and we play bishop b3.
00:47:52Why? We want to over-defend d4, so that way we can free up other moves.
00:47:58Now, what happened was I kind of played this move order a little bit off, but the opening was good.
00:48:04Now, after bishop g4 to play aggressively, I'm going to show you that you just can't play natural moves.
00:48:10It's not so simple to play this position.
00:48:16So, after bishop e2, e castled, and then I should have played what I would normally play.
00:48:25So, I played castle, but there's also this idea of e5 here.
00:48:30And the idea is to shut down the bishop, or the diagonal for the bishop.
00:48:33So, you can't immediately, so there's, you can relieve some of the pressure.
00:48:38And so, although f3, this idea I believe of f6, queen b3 check, so that opens it up.
00:48:48Queen h2, rook, okay, and then of course we have the time to play rook d1.
00:48:55Okay, maybe not so simple.
00:48:59Yeah, so white, that's better for white.
00:49:04I wouldn't say winning, but I think it's better for white.
00:49:08Okay, I played castles here, which is very, very, makes a lot of sense.
00:49:16Castles.
00:49:18Knight 8 to d7.
00:49:20So, yeah, a knight that was on b8 goes to d7.
00:49:25Because they both can go to, they're both on the b5 and they both can go to d7.
00:49:28So, we indicate now the rank, the actual rank, which is a8, the 8th rank, c8 and a3.
00:49:36Knight 8 to d7.
00:49:38I play h3 now.
00:49:41The question is, do we have a better move?
00:49:43Apparently queen b3 is better because he stops like f5 and stuff like that.
00:49:49So, also e5 is also something to be considered.
00:49:53A lot of times I would play moves and like I've played games or play e5.
00:49:57So, now the bishop's no longer attacking there.
00:50:00And also, he doesn't have knight f6.
00:50:02He doesn't, right?
00:50:04So, of course, black would proceed with bishop takes.
00:50:09Bishop takes.
00:50:11Notice I have a good square, good diagonal from f3 to b7.
00:50:15So, knight to c4 is playable as per the game.
00:50:20And then we can play bishop takes b7.
00:50:23Now, white has two options.
00:50:25I mean, black has two options.
00:50:26You can either take back on b2.
00:50:28Meanwhile, they're going to play probably queen c2, right?
00:50:33Or you can take the bishop.
00:50:36Rook b8 is probably most logical because we're going to kick the bishop.
00:50:43Once the bishop moves, you'll take on b2.
00:50:46But if you try to do this too soon and play knight takes b2, guess what happens?
00:50:53Well, we're going to play, we're actually just going to play queen e2 and hit the knight.
00:50:58So, and then, of course, now we have the knight and the rook on pre.
00:51:01So, I have the rook b8.
00:51:04What happens?
00:51:05Well, we can play queen takes b2 and defend it.
00:51:08Notice we can't attack it twice with queen c8 or knight c5 because the pawn will take.
00:51:16And then, of course, being up the material would be winning for white.
00:51:20So, h3 was kind of like a little hasty.
00:51:27e5 was playable.
00:51:28Also, queen b3 is playable, which I've played before.
00:51:33And the idea is you pin the f pawn, but also, you know, you allow the rook to go to
00:51:41d1 and things like that.
00:51:44So, worst case scenario, I can play rook fd1, rook d2, and then over.
00:51:49So, we get our rooks connected.
00:51:51We get to play on the b file.
00:51:53We can play a4, a4, a5 stuff, and also pin the b file.
00:51:59So, maybe that's better.
00:52:02So, yeah.
00:52:05h3, bishop takes, bishop takes.
00:52:07So, this doesn't look horrible at this point.
00:52:09So, the only thing that's annoying is this knight c4 move.
00:52:15He plays e5, and at this point, I should have played d5.
00:52:20This was my main error was I played queen d2 thinking, okay, but I somehow missed this knight c4.
00:52:27I just overlooked that, this knight c4.
00:52:30Better was to play d5 now because queen d2 is a mistake.
00:52:34It's not losing, but it's definitely a mistake.
00:52:37Okay, d5 now, and if he does play knight to c4, well, we can play bishop c1.
00:52:44Right?
00:52:45I don't, I don't have, the bishop can move without it being traded off.
00:52:50Yes, he can play f5, so he has some counterplay, but then I do have a4, is it?
00:53:00A4.
00:53:06Okay.
00:53:08Nice.
00:53:09Okay, a4.
00:53:11Knight b6 now.
00:53:13I think my idea after a4, just to stop b5 and stuff like that is, I'm going to be playing
00:53:20queen b3 soon.
00:53:21But also hitting the pawn on e4 twice.
00:53:26So, a5 is possible, this stops knight b6, a6 now, and then bishop e3.
00:53:35Now, the idea here is, if he plays f4, right?
00:53:40Well, first of all, it's best for him just to control e4 and attack b4.
00:53:44If he plays f4 now, I'm going to play bishop d2.
00:53:50And then h, he's going to maybe try to play h5 now, but that's risky because I could trade, maybe,
00:53:57trade off the bishop for both pawns, I'm not sure.
00:54:02But, yeah, that's possible.
00:54:09Also, maybe to stop bishop g4.
00:54:12Then we also get our other rook in play.
00:54:15So, we see we're cramping his position, stopping knight b6.
00:54:19And, like, maybe to play, like, knight a4 to c5 and double up on the c file.
00:54:25Black's going to have a better position.
00:54:28And so, that's what you'd be aiming for.
00:54:32So, continuing on, queen d2 was a mistake because knight c4 hits both.
00:54:36Queen d3, trade.
00:54:38And then pawn takes.
00:54:40The reason why you want to play pawn takes is because you have another defender.
00:54:43So, if he takes, you take back with the pawn.
00:54:47E takes d.
00:54:48E takes d.
00:54:50And knight e5.
00:54:51Notice we can't take the pawn because the queen is undefended, but it's also attacking the queen.
00:54:56So, this is a good move.
00:54:599e5 is a good move, for sure.
00:55:02Queen b5.
00:55:04So, here I made even larger mistake, I think, with queen b.
00:55:10See, queen b5 looks like it has something because we're attacking the knight twice.
00:55:14And also the b pawn.
00:55:18But queen d2, as it turns out, is better anyway.
00:55:22Queen d2.
00:55:23Queen.
00:55:24Even queen e3, maybe.
00:55:26Queen e3.
00:55:27Because queen e3, we're out of that file, but also we're attacking the knight.
00:55:32Queen d1.
00:55:33Yeah, I like queen d1 also.
00:55:35Because then we are threatening to take the knight also.
00:55:38Queen d2.
00:55:39I'm not sure.
00:55:40As I play queen b5, 9f3 check, we take with a rook.
00:55:45And then c6.
00:55:47So, I take the pawn.
00:55:50Queen b4 check.
00:55:52King h1.
00:55:53So, it's kind of like, okay, we got the...
00:55:56By taking, his rook gets activated.
00:55:59So, that's definitely a plus and a minus at this point.
00:56:02Queen takes c6.
00:56:03So, rook takes b2.
00:56:06So, this is what you don't...
00:56:07Okay, here's a problem.
00:56:10With taste b2.
00:56:12Is, at this point, it's kind of critical.
00:56:15Because he's got the rook on the 7th here.
00:56:20And then the queen, you don't want the queen coming to f2.
00:56:27I play knight b5.
00:56:31And I'm thinking if I play queen d5, he'll...
00:56:33Oh, but the rook's already defending the knight c3.
00:56:36Okay.
00:56:36Not an easy position to see, but probably objectively queen d5.
00:56:42Because they're hitting the queen and also hitting the f pawn twice.
00:56:46And then also pinning the knight...
00:56:50Pinning the pawn on f7.
00:56:52Rook...
00:56:53He can play rook d2, defending the queen.
00:56:56And then...
00:56:58We have the queen defended twice.
00:57:00We'll play rook c1.
00:57:02Right?
00:57:02We want to make sure that that knight on c3 is defended.
00:57:07Bishop e5.
00:57:09Notice we've got a hole on the g3 square.
00:57:12So...
00:57:12And then, of course, queen takes d now.
00:57:16Rook takes d.
00:57:18And then rook c to f1.
00:57:22Okay.
00:57:22So we're hitting this twice now.
00:57:25And then maybe now is the time to play knight b5.
00:57:30No, e plays g4.
00:57:32Okay.
00:57:32So at this point, this is what black's winning.
00:57:36Let's count the material.
00:57:37We've got four against four.
00:57:39Bishop a knight.
00:57:40Two rooks.
00:57:41King positioning may be a little better for black.
00:57:45Not critical.
00:57:49Pawn structure is a little better for black.
00:57:52I'm not really sure how this is winning for black.
00:57:56But anyway.
00:57:57This would be better than knight b5.
00:57:59Knight b5.
00:58:00Rook takes b5.
00:58:01Queen takes b5.
00:58:02Oh, and then...
00:58:02Oh, oops.
00:58:03Lost the rook.
00:58:06And it's like, oh, queen takes h2.
00:58:09So you can see here from this game.
00:58:11Just a little bit off.
00:58:13And then the whole thing collapses.
00:58:14So what we want to do in this game, a key thing to remember from this game, okay,
00:58:20is we want to play d5 and not queen d2.
00:58:26The thing is, we don't know where that square...
00:58:28Is it best to play the queen on d2 or b3?
00:58:31We don't know yet.
00:58:32So better to play moves we know how to play.
00:58:35The other thing about d5 is it stops the continued attack on the d4 square.
00:58:41You know, at the same time, it allows the scope of the bishop on e3 to be 6.
00:58:46So we have d5, right?
00:58:50There's no more attack there.
00:58:52What you'll want to do is counterattack with this lever of playing b5.
00:58:56And then we have this queen b3 and d6 stuff.
00:59:00So you see that.
00:59:02In fact, let me just go back and see how he...
00:59:05Yeah, he says this is actually quite a bit better after d5.
00:59:09So yeah, let me...
00:59:11So yeah, it's d5 standard.
00:59:14And yeah, we'll just continue on, I think.
00:59:18Knight c4.
00:59:20Yeah, so he likes knight c4.
00:59:22Bishop c1.
00:59:23But the good thing about, even though the bishop's coming back, we have the b pawn defended.
00:59:30So f5 or knight d6.
00:59:33And d6 is the alternative move because it hits on e4.
00:59:37Right?
00:59:38And then we play b3 now.
00:59:40So he no longer has that.
00:59:42We can get the bishop out to a3.
00:59:45And then the rook to c1.
00:59:48So after f5 even tries to play in the center with f5.
00:59:53We're going to play bishop b3 like I was saying.
00:59:56Pins the knight.
00:59:58Queen g5 now.
01:00:00Right?
01:00:01But that knight's still pinned, but you know, it's okay.
01:00:05Rook c1 now.
01:00:06Right?
01:00:07So even this pawn goes forward, right?
01:00:10There's no more pin on that file.
01:00:13Knight f6 now.
01:00:14Black trying to get play.
01:00:15He's on it twice.
01:00:18And then we play queen d3.
01:00:21Notice here.
01:00:22We're controlling that square.
01:00:24Getting the queen.
01:00:25We'll eventually like to get to maybe to g3 or f3.
01:00:29And white will be fine.
01:00:31It says white is slightly better, but black also has this play too.
01:00:36So it's not that easy at this point.
01:00:38But you can see.
01:00:40Also, the other thing about this is when we have these trades like this,
01:00:44even though it wasn't ideal to trade that bishop off, was after 95,
01:00:49we have to think about where the queen's going to be best placed.
01:00:53We don't want to take on b7 because he has this rook b8.
01:00:57So the best thing, of course, according to the engine, was queen to d1.
01:01:03Well, queen d1 allows later to play queen to b3, but also to threaten to take the knight.
01:01:10So queen b5 was definitely not correct.
01:01:16So queen d1.
01:01:18Sample line would be like knight takes f3.
01:01:21Rook takes f3.
01:01:23See, because you have the half open file, we want to use it for the rook.
01:01:26And then even after queen takes d4, right?
01:01:33Queen takes d4.
01:01:34We don't want to trade.
01:01:35Just get the king out of the way.
01:01:38Queen b4 now.
01:01:39And then, of course, rook to d3.
01:01:43Well, rook d3 does some things.
01:01:45So he stops rook d8 for one.
01:01:48We have play to play rook d7.
01:01:51If now he plays, let's say, so we can play bishop takes c3 now.
01:01:57Rook takes c3.
01:01:58And then if queen takes b2 now hitting the rook, what we can do is also play on the seventh
01:02:05rank.
01:02:06Notice black would like to play like queen f3 and hit this pawn twice.
01:02:11And also, of course, we'd also like to play rook to b1 and then put another rook on the seventh.
01:02:16So this is not going to be so simple.
01:02:19Yes, it says black is clearly better, but this would be better than what was played.
01:02:24So we don't want to open up the b file.
01:02:27We want to keep the pressure on the knight, okay?
01:02:30And then we got to this position here.
01:02:33We want to think about the situation.
01:02:37Okay, the knight on c3 is already guarded.
01:02:39But queen d5, what's the difference?
01:02:41Queen d5 or hitting the queen and having the pawn on f7 and pinning the pawn.
01:02:49So that's the difference there.
01:02:52So with these type of openings, it's very tricky.
01:02:55You have to consider the pressure, how many count, how many attacking, how many defending.
01:03:00But then at the right time, we need to be flexible to be able to play, right?
01:03:07D5.
01:03:08So if you go back, where's the d5?
01:03:10At this point, we want to be flexible enough to play d5.
01:03:14So that's something to remember for this game.
01:03:18Now, yes, this is the Gruenfeld defense, if you want to look it up.
01:03:23And there are some transpositions, okay?
01:03:26So, yes, what you want to do for this in general, just bring out like bishop e3, which is perfectly
01:03:35fine.
01:03:37Castle, castle.
01:03:39E5 is just something else to consider, but I think castling is more principled because we get the king out
01:03:44of this diagonal, like the a5.
01:03:46But, of course, it's going to take some time to do that, but that's what it is.
01:03:52Castle.
01:03:54The other thing to consider, just one more thing I wanted to add is if, let's say, instead of castling,
01:04:00he plays knight to c4 now, how would that change?
01:04:05Okay, yeah, sorry, excuse me, bishop takes c4, so he can't play it now, excuse me, sorry.
01:04:10So just thinking, what would he do immediately?
01:04:12Okay, so he can't play knight c4 now, so castle, castle, and then what he wants to do is get
01:04:18a piece out.
01:04:19So this is a plus and a minus because we're blocking the queen, but we also want to get development
01:04:24out.
01:04:24So we can play knight f6, stuff like that, and supporting e5, although we could immediately play e5, but we'd
01:04:32like to take back with the knight in the center instead of the bishop, right?
01:04:36Okay, so because we don't want to trade, he doesn't want to trade off his bishop for my knight here.
01:04:42So, anyway, those are some main points.
01:04:46Certain opening, especially f1 and shadow opening, is very important to people, to having equal play in the dark squares,
01:04:52but also, at the right time, lock down the position where his bishop is no longer affecting, okay?
01:04:59So, also, you want to look at what's best, if you can pin, put the queen, let's say you have
01:05:06to relocate it, move it to a square where the next move will be on its square that's best, okay?
01:05:12So, just a temporary redeployment maneuver to get to a square where you want to go, okay?
01:05:20So, that's what it is.
