00:00is billy donovan has stepped down billy donovan's no longer the coach of the chicago bulls
00:03britney uh he is which was a little strange because everybody loved him uh people loved him
00:10and then after everybody kicked the uh the the gms out they were like oh they're gonna keep billy
00:15donovan i'm like well that's kind of strange like why would you even if he's a very nice man
00:18obviously a great college coach uh and was a fine nba coach it's not like he's a bum right but
00:24i did
00:25find it strange like oh if you're gonna start fresh i feel like you start fresh you know it's
00:29kind of like the dolphins like you just i feel you've had a six years of mediocrity like move on
00:37so they're going to be looking for a new coach a lot of people may be looking for a new
00:40coach including
00:41the portland trailblazers so the portland trailblazers they have tiago splitter because
00:46chauncey billups got arrested and which is a crazy sentence but he got arrested and apparently splitter
00:54got uh lowballed on his contract and the word is on this uh this owner of the blazers tom dundon
01:04that he doesn't believe in paying nba coaches like more than a million dollars because he's just which
01:12is like i would get i think some heat assistants make that right you know and there's been other
01:18things like he the blazers are in the in the playoffs right now right yeah they're in the
01:23playoffs and they had a good season a big reason behind he was a good coach right you know in
01:29in
01:30the midst of chaos right but he doesn't believe in paying now listen coaches salaries got very crazy
01:36in the nba because that monty williams deal that spoke got a big deal monty williams and getting that
01:40deal from detroit i mean all the coaches should should should buy him a beer every time they see him
01:45because it exploded the market on coaches but this guy's going the other route he doesn't want
01:49to pay anybody and the other word on him is that he's not even paying for the two-way guys
01:55the guys
01:56who play with the team all year they're not eligible to play in the playoffs but they practice with the
02:00team they shoot around with the team they're part of the team they're not in the locker room they're in
02:05another locker room but they're part of the team he's not even paying for them to go on the road
02:09like and there was another story that apparently he uh he's making some staff check out early
02:16because he don't want to pay for late checkout on the road so this guy who paid four billion for
02:22the
02:22team tightening the uh the old purse strings around the the blazers we've had this conversation a bunch
02:30of times and and and and what seems to go as no big deal is the amount of money that
02:40stephen ross spends
02:42on the organization and making sure everybody has the best of the best that doesn't happen everywhere
02:51and so when people talk about whether you have a good owner or not one of the starting points is
02:58is resources when you talk about even colleges and you talk about um universities and and one of the
03:08things they's talked about when um when when they change coaches here how many resources are you going
03:17to put into the program right so that is a big deal throughout all of sports and you take it
03:25for granted
03:26until this yeah and and you don't realize it happens more than you think like i would i used to
03:34get
03:34charged for socks i need another pair of socks i need an extra pair of socks yeah i thought that
03:40story
03:40immediately when i heard this i was like oh right leroy socks guy right so like let's not so there's
03:46a
03:46starting point one of the things that mark cuban did when he first bought dallas is that he invested so
03:55much money into the team into the facilities that they had and so a lot of guys really like mark
04:03cuban
04:04because that's not normal this is closer to normal the guy that says i'm not paying for this i'm not
04:12paying for that i'm not paying for this you know in most places if you go to a hotel
04:19and you're a basketball or a football team and you say to them our games at night we're gonna have
04:26a
04:26late checkout they can say yay or nay and you go somewhere else and most of the time they say
04:35yes so
04:35he is before they even try to ask saying i ain't paying for it you guys check out early now
04:43imagine
04:43having a game at seven eight o'clock at night checkout is at 11 yeah and so you have half
04:51of your workers
04:53right half of your workers are checked out and at the arena eight hours before the game yeah it's crazy
05:04but i've been on both sides of that don't take that for granted don't think that just because your
05:12owner spend a lot of money or his team is worth a lot of money that he is spending or
05:18investing a lot
05:19of money in the team crazy dude crazy let's get a gazillion dollars and then they're not letting
05:27the two-way guys go that's rotten that's the one that i like even two-way guys i don't think
05:33he
05:33understands and and here's the other thing i think sometimes owners don't understand
05:42how much time and work is invested in that organization by people you don't see in the starting
05:51five right so go to coaches go to assistants go to you know the two-way guys go the two
05:57-way guys work
05:58harder than the guys that play oh yeah and so from that standpoint to tell them you're not on the
06:04team you don't get to like it's just yeah but and even like something stupid like when the heat
06:09would play you know when the heat had two-way guys here like jimmy butler would play one-on-one
06:15with one of the two-way guys to get him ready for a game right like that's that's how he
06:19gets ready
06:20and most guys are like that but if the organization isn't like yeah man but but again just because he
06:29paid four billion for the team doesn't mean that he just wrote a check for four billion dollars
06:37and so now they're looking at okay how can i get out of this situation or how can i stay
06:43in this
06:43situation and and at least break even for a minute and you cut some of the most meaningless things
06:52i remember when i was in minnesota right they used to have like the uh the fedex slips you should
07:01just
07:01go get the fedex slips i used to ship everything i'm talking about i you take them home box up
07:09my clothes
07:10box up my club out like at the end of the season i shipped all my stuff fedex with the
07:17fedex slips
07:18after like a couple of years they got hip to it
07:22they deducted like 3 500 what check oh wow yeah well you got the address on it they know it's
07:29me
07:31i'm like i'm like and i couldn't say nothing yeah right but but again it it's it's
07:39crazy like my owner in minnesota i knew uh i used to golf with another guy who used to own
07:47the 76ers right he's the guy that started a neutral system oh the old guy the old guy the old
07:53guy on
07:54and he said and when i said uh red mccombs you know red mccombs because he owned the uh spurs
08:02the same time he owned when he then he bought the vikings and he said let me tell you something
08:09about
08:09your owner he said years ago we were like 26 teams we were at the owners meetings and somebody
08:18said we need to charter flights we need everybody instead of flying commercial we need we need to
08:24make it mandatory that all owners have to charter flights 25 yays one day nay guess who it was
08:33red mccombs and so like you just you don't know until you have these situations and and from the
08:43beginning i've always said hey the dude may make bad decisions but it's not for lack of of committing
08:53resources to his product
08:55so
