Transcript
00:00i'm steven strom joining us there you can hear him every single marlins game as your marlins
00:05radio pregame host and what's going on steven how are you buddy what's up boys uh everything is
00:10going well much needed victory yesterday at a place that has caused a lot of pain at truest
00:15park marlins 23 and 53 now since 2017 at that ballpark but just a really much needed victory
00:23for this group much needed victory much needed big bop for augustine ramirez it's good to see
00:28him get on the board for the season how uh how beneficial was that for him because i feel like
00:32he's been close he had the one at home nearly hit out but i mean this is not a team
00:36that hits a ton
00:37of homers they need him to to get a couple out of there i don't get it twisted augustine ramirez
00:42is
00:42up here for his offensive pop and to give this lineup uh an explosiveness to it and he's been
00:48close augustine you know obviously he's coming off 20 plus last year you think if you can give this guy
00:54a full season he'll split some reps with the dh position with liam hicks this is a guy i think
00:59everyone thinks is going to hit 30 home runs if he stays healthy but when he slugs tobin and leroy
01:05this team feels different especially in that third fourth spot in the lineup you've got some table
01:11setters but table setters are great they they don't score who cares and augustine ramirez um you know
01:18to see him come out with a big home run yesterday uh and they needed it man i mean yesterday
01:24got
01:24dicey they were on three nothing you felt good and then the braves come all the way back that next
01:29inning so the marlins needed everything yesterday and hopefully this is um you know the beginning of
01:35augustine starting to really heat up and lift the ball it's always been the big thing with him he's got
01:40to lift the ball he's got a high ground ball rate i know he's been working hard offensively on that
01:44and we saw that payoff yesterday steven is is there anybody on this team that's good enough
01:52to not have to do the lefty righty thing because like it i mean guys were in kind of a
02:01groove there
02:02was a couple guys in the groove early on the year and then they go to the bench and and
02:07i think
02:08you have to have a pretty deep team to be able to to to play into those analytics um when
02:15you can't
02:16when you're not that deep and you can't go well into your bench then you kind of need your best
02:21players out there regardless of who's yeah yeah yeah that's all that's been the topic of conversation
02:27why isn't casey playing against lefties why isn't hicks playing against lefties here's probably why
02:32a guy like eroberto hernandez they have to figure out what he is and if he can't hit against left
02:38then he can't play austin slater was brought here he's leading off against lefties they didn't just
02:44bring him in to sit on the bench you have to give these other guys opportunities lero you know it
02:49i
02:49mean if a guy's playing every single day that means someone is not you know someone like javier
02:54sonoha is sonoha gonna get everyday reps so the reason behind this it's not clayton wants to give
02:59opportunities to guys like oh and casey because ultimately you want to figure out if he's an
03:03everyday player like kyle stowers became last year stowers was still platooning if you don't remember
03:09in the beginning of the season and then he earned his way into an everyday position same with augustine
03:14ramirez you know yes when a lefty is is towing the rubber you're like ah man like we don't got
03:20casey in
03:20there we don't got hicks in there but we also need to figure out and again it's 17 games and
03:25you look at
03:26like eroberto hernandez's average it's in the 100s you still got to see this thing through i don't know
03:32what the right amount of games for a sample size is i'm not in that position of baseball operations
03:37but you do have to give these guys some reps um and and the other thing too man is like
03:43casey ends up
03:44playing every day because he comes in in a pinch hit situation it's it's not about really who starts for
03:49me it's about who finishes all right i got you i just i just like you i just always thought
03:56like
03:56to be able to make those changes you have to be really deep and really good with the guys that
04:03you're bringing in to play and they have to far and exceed what they do lefty versus righty for it
04:10to even matter and i think you kind of put a different twist on it that no we're trying to
04:16see
04:16what we have and that's a way of seeing what everybody can do and at some point they will
04:22you know they may earn a spot regardless of who's pitching yeah and and regardless like
04:30you're gonna have to figure out what you have and once kyle stowers comes back like we'll see what it
04:34looks like leroy because he's starting you know he's gonna come back here hopefully in the next week
04:38or two and now all of a sudden where do the reps go for for someone like casey because you
04:43got three
04:43outfielders obviously you've got marcy in centerfield i know he's off to a slow start but
04:47a very encouraging day yesterday and i'll explain why later you're gonna have you know um some of
04:53your outfielders you know stowers is gonna play every day uh maybe not to start when he comes back
04:58from the il but uh you know there's going to be a time i promise you throughout the season where
05:05you're gonna see someone like owen casey because i'm assuming that's is that who you're referring to
05:09yeah there's a couple of guys right hicks yeah like here's the other thing steven like i am one
05:14of these guys right like i'm a i'm a millennial type of guy before all the analytics got too much
05:21but it's not nothing whatever happened to being in a groove like a guy's in a groove you roll with
05:26it for it's such a hard sport and guys like have these windows where like hey you're killing it out
05:32of it and it's like now we're gonna go with the matchups it's like i understand what your process
05:37processes i get it but there's always like there's always that fine line of like hey this
05:42dude's just rolling right now because it may not be like that in may it may not like he may
05:47go through
05:47something terrible and i just it's gonna be an organizational philosophy it's one of these things
05:52like i said when we were first talking about the show it's not an argument i'm gonna win i just
05:56have
05:56to live with it but i still don't love it because i do think there's still something to hey a
06:02guy's got
06:02a hot hand a guy's got a hot bat yeah you should ride that puppy for a little bit especially
06:07especially
06:08in baseball because you know there's gonna be a point where he's probably whiffing in may and or
06:13in august or some point and he's gonna go through his lulls yeah no and like javier sonoha is like
06:18a
06:18good example of that like sonoha is hitting over 500 and it seems like every big spot that he has
06:25gotten
06:26into again just 17 games in and even last year the guy produces like somehow some way he gets on
06:32base
06:33or somehow some way he makes a big play defensively yeah he's one of those guys that maybe you can
06:38make
06:38the case they're like hey he's swinging a hot bat you know you've got to play him but again
06:41the organizational philosophy here is like we want to figure out we have our guys that we know we're
06:49going to move forward with right but we also need to figure out what we have on this bench and
06:54we have
06:55to figure out if these guys are legitimate platoon guys or now for the first time ever like not ever
07:01i'll take that back for the first time in a long time there are consequences to guys that don't produce
07:06it's no longer okay eroberto you're gonna get 300 plus pas but we've got a really good farm system and
07:14guys are knocking on the door i mean i know he's not a hitter but think about braxton garrett
07:18braxton garrett in 2023 he made 30 starts to a three era he just won international league player of the
07:24week he's not on this team like he's not in this starting rotation so it speaks to the depth and
07:28uh you know this is just part of the process especially early on in the season what do you
07:33make of a ori's season so far right like this is a kid who dude throws gas right like he's
07:40got all
07:41the tools but for whatever reason he gets knocked around a lot dude like they're they're hitting a lot
07:45of stuff hard off of him and it just hasn't it was had some wins like he's gotten through but
07:49um
07:50you know obviously he's got a big mentor that he's got to live up to who's you know it's it's
07:54a
07:54tough mark but where do you think he's at like do you think there's still some things that he's
07:58going to work out uh this year or you know is this another thing like there's just development
08:03because what is he 22 i mean he's super super super young he turns 23 tomorrow i'll take a drum
08:10roll if we have that sound effect when i ask clayton mccullough what from a potential one to ten where
08:17he's at he gave me three or four like he's just scratching the surface he is so young he's six
08:24eight there's a lot of things with yuri that again he can probably throw his fastball for like four or
08:30five innings and get away with it um that's just how god-given talented he is the thing with yuri
08:37right now is he has to be able to command the fastball and that has been an issue the entire
08:43year
08:43the other thing we forget is like he still is you know coming off tommy john surgery not last year
08:49but
08:49the year before remember he came up in the middle of the year last year that's something that sandy
08:53went through last year that was public we saw it it was frontal he couldn't command anything and
08:58that's why he would have those innings of five or six runs uh with yuri to me it's more about
09:04the
09:04secondaries he's got to figure out what his pitch mix is like i don't know what it is like the
09:09fastball
09:09plays we know at 99 top of the zone even if he doesn't command it yesterday like he got away
09:14with
09:15it in the first couple of innings the problem becomes once guys start to get on fastball where
09:22is he gonna go can he go to the change up change up is like statistically like a good pitch
09:27for him
09:27but it can it be a slider is it the sweeper he has to figure out his secondaries because look
09:34unless
09:34you're a bullpen guy you need more than two pitches to be a starter and i don't care how good
09:39the
09:39fastball is we need yuri to get through you know five innings we need to get him three you know
09:43three turns in in the uh in the order but man credit clayton mccullough like he was urgent yesterday
09:49like he didn't screw around and that fifth inning when two guys got on he said no no we're gonna
09:54bring
09:54in andrew nardi who did a phenomenal job by the way um the other parts of this is yuri's got
09:59a two era
10:00at home he's got a five era on the road and that's 20 plus starts in both of those categories
10:06uh i don't know what it is i don't know if it's the lone dome i don't know if it's
10:10uh more
10:11comfortable pitching at home but he has really struggled away from lone depot park again he's 22
10:16he turns 23 tomorrow got a great pitching group we are going to have a stretch where yuri's throwing
10:23six shutout six innings of one run ball i don't know if it's going to happen in in may i
10:28don't know
10:28if it's going to happen in june but that is going to come i think it was funny too i
10:32think it was i think
10:32he was on the tv broadcast sandy they were interviewing him and he got off to a tough start
10:36i think i think it was the reds outing his last one yeah because he's fine he's gonna get through
10:41it and i would be like man that's such a tough mentor to have if i have sandy who's just
10:46like
10:46you're not coming out in four that's soft no you're going out there it's but like it's probably good for
10:51him too that he has that barometer of somebody who he can lean on for this but uh i'm sure
10:56he will
10:57figure it out like it feels like he's got too many physical tools for it not to but i just
11:01thought
11:01that was funny when he was like he goes he's fine he's got to live up to i mean they
11:06share a locker
11:07next to each other every time i come in after if i go four and a third and i give
11:10up three runs and
11:11i'm at like 75 pitches and i look up and i'm like hey sandy all right yeah sorry man he's
11:18get up next
11:19time he goes six innings today huh he's like i call that i call that a trot i'm not even
11:24ready
11:24warm up it's pretty amazing because you don't even look at sandy until seventh or eighth inning
11:30yeah don't even like and and then you have to like excuse me um sandy uh yeah may i may
11:40like we
11:41think it will be best you know long season long season uh we we think it would be best if
11:47we pull
11:48you out tough job yeah that's a really tough job like i don't know real quick on that i don't
11:54know
11:54where you guys stood on that that that is that was one of the most difficult if not the most
11:59difficult
11:59decision clayton has had to probably make in his in his first year in in a quarter here because
12:05honestly i stand by this after the first two got on i was i was at peace with with going
12:12to the
12:13bullpen i think it was even there we have like 80 pitches though we don't have to open up we
12:18don't
12:18have to open up i think i would have been fine if we would have had fairbanks there i would
12:22have
12:22felt better about it fair fair but you know it is what it is i i like sandy's i thought
12:28sandy's
12:29description of it was fair too he's like he didn't even talk to me about it like i think that
12:32that's
12:32the thing that that's the thing that i i do wish in today's day and age like you do have
12:39to feel
12:40out your place especially a guy like him maybe not the young guys but if anybody encounter sure
12:46last year did you watch sandy pitch yeah it was tough especially the start of the year
12:51and clayton stood by him man i mean clayton stood by him gave him every fifth day i mean there
12:55were
12:55points where even i thought i'm like man this is getting so out of hand like you guys know what
13:00the phantom il is i know sandy would never do that but the phantom il is when ah my shoulder
13:04like
13:05i don't know i feel something off with it like i'm gonna take yeah and he didn't
13:10do that and that's not in sandy's dna but like look like clayton stuck by him during some really
13:15tough times i mean it will fight you all right you got you like there are there are guys who
13:22eventually like build the resume even if you're just with him like there are guys that you're
13:28gonna you know if it's max meyer tonight fine dude like first of all i please be careful with him
13:33like you know with with how his career's gone but him i i just first of all you know and
13:38look we
13:38talked to him clayton before the year he knows that's a tough thing to to to go against it's not
13:43like it's not every player coach relationship is always going to be rosy with that stuff
13:47the other thing is is that he's got he's got to have sandy ready for the whole season
13:54and and so sometimes coaches early or managers earlier in the year you know even if he's only had
14:0280 pitches he's like great outing let's you know build on it and go from there instead of having
14:09him in the eighth inning with a 35 pitch inning what uh where are we at with stowers you said
14:15about
14:15a week but what's the what's the word on him where is he going to like a rehab start like
14:19where what are
14:20we feeling about uh his actual status well he was in norfolk with the jacksonville jumbos for him so
14:25he's been playing the last couple of days it's really just about timing with him if he feels good
14:31because again he just didn't have a lot of like spring training ab's and the last thing you want
14:36to do is that kind of like that norby situation last year we talked about this on opening day like
14:41norby pulled the oblique i know it's a different injury it's a hamstring for stowers but for norby last
14:46year he started on the shelf felt like he needed to rush back and then he ended up you know
14:51getting
14:52off to a slow start you don't want that the marlins have actually been you know pretty decent without
14:56stowers i've actually been pleasantly surprised offensively how they've handled having you know him
15:02that hit 25 homers last year uh to me it's about the timing and how he recovers because like there's
15:10like buzz that he's gonna play some first base because of the hamstring just maybe hey let's get
15:16him back in the lineup look i mean let's not beat around bush stowers is in the lineup because of
15:20his bat he's fine defensively but this guy hit 25 jacks and he has a 900 ops like just hit
15:26you know
15:26what i'm saying he could play some first base i'm thinking thinking hopeful that it's either the
15:33cardinal series which is the second uh second series of the homestand we come back uh tomorrow
15:40play the brewers friday saturday sunday and then we'll play the st louis cardinals maybe st louis if not
15:45that then hopefully san francisco steven strong catch up on the marlins broadcast night marlins
15:50on day what time are you guys on tonight uh 6 30 6 30 on am 5 6 you guys
15:55can hear the boys will
15:57somebody has somebody gotten now that he's in a you know he's on tv right now has somebody gotten
16:01jeff nelson a damn machete like we got to get this man i felt terrible for him i was listening
16:05i was
16:06like what why will somebody he doesn't get it like you can't do that on radio no one wants to
16:12hear
16:13you like chew on your quesadilla and like give us a review on how our show rules would say different
16:18yeah you guys do food testing i mean also you're on stream yard yes well is that the easter eggs
16:25reese's yeah yeah i know i like you hey hey hey you know what i do i do drive-bys
16:32before easter
16:33and i tell all the reese's peanut butter whatever i'll see you on monday after easter do you refrigerate
16:40your chocolate or no freezer oh my god lasts almost a whole year i love you uh you have a
16:49good one man we'll talk to you down the road all right thanks boys all right such uh marlins on
16:53deck
16:53today 6 30 team two yeah i'm telling you you and jeff nelson seem like you would get along like
17:00it
17:00just uh you know both uh describing like oh you think i can't describe food on the radio watch me
17:06yeah
17:06watch but i would say this um
17:13you gotta just get one for him yeah just get it right by him you can do a radio bit
17:19and people
17:20can't see it yep yeah it's possible you got to be creative with it i mean you make the announcement
17:26and he's like this thing is delicious that's gonna get people whether they see it or not it's not but
17:32first of all everybody can't chew sexy everybody can't chew some people chew like animals so you
17:38might not want to see him chewing on t on tv got some chompers yeah you might not want to
17:43see it
17:44but on the radio you can give a legitimate evaluation of the machete
17:50you
