The Washington Commanders are a week out from the NFL Draft and if these top prospects are available at pick 7 they shouldn't hesitate to draft them! Kevin Sheehan gives his analysis on who the Commanders should stick and pick in the NFL Draft with the available top options on the board.
Transcript
00:00The player that would be available for Washington to take at seven
00:05that you would turn down all offers to trade back for.
00:10Give me that name of the player that if he's on the board
00:14and they're on the clock, you do not want a trade back.
00:17You want that player selected.
00:20301-230-0980.
00:23I've got two.
00:23Max, I want your answer to this question.
00:26I'm going to give you my first now,
00:28and that would be David Bailey.
00:30I've talked about him since we started to talk about the draft.
00:33To me, I do value production.
00:39And number 31 for Texas Tech had production.
00:43He had 14 and a half sacks.
00:46He was legitimately at times unblockable
00:50and was just a major havoc-wreaking force.
00:55Now, he didn't have as many forced fumbles as his teammate number 10,
00:58Jacob Rodriguez had.
01:00Rodriguez is one of my favorite players in this draft.
01:02He had seven forced fumbles, but Bailey had three forced fumbles.
01:07And my guest yesterday pointed out the absolute truth,
01:11and that is their playoff loss to Oregon,
01:14and it was 23-0, had nothing to do with the defense.
01:19The defense was dominant.
01:21Texas Tech was in that game.
01:23Bailey and Rodriguez and company were dominant.
01:27I think I'm just looking up the –
01:30Bailey had a sack and two TFLs and two blocked passes at the line of scrimmage.
01:38Rodriguez was second on the team with 11 total tackles in the game.
01:42I mean, if you remember that game,
01:44Dante Moore and that Oregon offense couldn't do anything.
01:47It was Morton, the quarterback for Texas Tech,
01:51that just soiled himself over and over again.
01:54Turned it over, you know, three, four times in the game.
01:57Couple fumbles, couple picks, and Oregon took advantage of it.
02:01It was 6-0 at halftime.
02:04That was it.
02:06Texas Tech couldn't score.
02:07Their defense was awesome, and that was led by Bailey and Rodriguez.
02:12Bailey's number one for me.
02:14I don't think he'll be there at 7.
02:16If he is there at 7, I'll actually question why he's there at 7,
02:20because maybe there's something teams know about him personally
02:24or medically or whatever.
02:27I just can't imagine that the highest producing, other than Bain,
02:32you know, true edge pass rusher.
02:35I know that he's not great against the run,
02:38but give me somebody that's going to strike fear
02:40into an offensive coordinator's heart and mind,
02:45because I hope Owe develops into that.
02:47I hope.
02:48But I think Bailey can be that.
02:51So Bailey's number one for me.
02:53If he's on the board at 7, I'm not trading back.
02:57And by the way, the trade back is not something that's, like, crazy.
03:00It's just whatever the draft chart says you should pick up.
03:03You know, 7 to 16 is a second and a fourth in addition to, you know,
03:09the 16th overall.
03:117 to 25th would be something, you know, much greater in overall value.
03:17But don't tell me that, you know,
03:19with the exception of somebody offering three firsts to move,
03:23nobody's going to do that.
03:25So I've got two players.
03:27The first is David Bailey.
03:29If he's there at 7, I want them to take David Bailey.
03:33I've got one other one.
03:34Max, who's the player for you that you would turn down
03:38all tradeback opportunities and say,
03:40no, I want you to select that player at number 7?
03:43For me, and I keep going to one guy on each side of the ball.
03:47On the offensive side, it's Jeremiah Love.
03:49I do think that he can elevate this offense into a realm
03:54where we haven't kind of seen it yet.
03:56Pairing him with Jaden Daniels and that rushing ability,
03:58I think, would make this rushing attack second to none.
04:02But on the other side, I've staked my reputation on Caleb Downs
04:07and will continue to until proven otherwise.
04:11So it would be Jeremiah Love or Caleb Downs.
04:14Those would be the two that I would be sticking with.
04:17Yeah, I think for me, like I considered Downs,
04:20you know, I did not consider Jeremiah Love.
04:22I would be fine if they don't take Jeremiah Love at 7.
04:25I think it's too high for him.
04:27I know I'm in the minority on this.
04:29That's fine.
04:29I'm not changing my mind.
04:32I am now convinced because, look, I liked Sonny Stiles a lot.
04:39But the number of people that we've had on the show,
04:45especially people like Bobby Carpenter, former Ohio State linebacker,
04:49lives in Ohio, has known Sonny Stiles since, you know, he was a kid.
04:56The high character and then the high RAS score and then the smarts and the need.
05:03Like, I think if Stiles is there at 7, I think I'd want them to pick Sonny Stiles.
05:11Like, if he ends up being the next, you know, Bobby Wagner,
05:19I don't want them to pass on that.
05:21Too important in the Durante Jones defense.
05:25So I think those are the two.
05:29The downs thing is interesting for me.
05:31I'm a big Carnell Tate fan.
05:34But for me, it's David Bailey more than anybody else, but I think Stiles as well.
05:39I wouldn't trade back if either one of those two are on the board.
05:44All right, 301-230-0980.
05:46Let's start with Rod and Landover.
05:48Rod, give me the player that you would not trade back
05:51if he were still available on the board for Washington to take.
05:56Hey, Greg, what's up, Kevin?
05:59For me, it's Jeremiah Love, man.
06:02I mean, I think, you know, to me, this is still an offensive lead.
06:07You know, Seattle had a guy that went over 1,700 yards.
06:11The Eagles before them had a guy that went over 2,000 yards.
06:15You just got to have that guy on offense, and we do not have it.
06:20And I think, you know, with Jeremiah Love, the potential of him being that,
06:26striking fear in the defense with him and Daniels,
06:30I think will open up the passing game.
06:33For me, it's just Jeremiah Love.
06:35If Love is not there, I would consider trading back.
06:39You know, Kenneth Walker III, the first player that you mentioned,
06:44who's now in Kansas City, was selected in the second round.
06:47You know, just FYI, I know you know that,
06:51but Barkley was drafted number two overall, right?
06:54Two or three, whatever it was.
06:57The idea of drafting a running back that high was never a big deal,
07:03and then it became a big deal, and it rarely happened.
07:05And now it seems like when it comes to running backs, safeties, linebackers,
07:11people are kind of a little bit more relaxed on the positional lack of value
07:16with that position, especially with Detroit doing what they did
07:21with a linebacker and a running back a few years ago in the draft.
07:26But thanks, Rod.
07:27Appreciate it.
07:27I have a feeling Love's going to be the selection for a lot of you.
07:32I'm looking for the player that would stop you dead in your tracks
07:36and you would not even consider a tradeback opportunity
07:40because that player is on the board and you want that player.
07:43Brian, Eastern Shore.
07:45Brian, go ahead.
07:49Brian, you there?
07:53I didn't hear you, Brian.
07:54Start over.
07:55Sorry.
07:55I don't expect you to be there.
07:57Brian, I'm sorry.
07:58Start over.
07:59I missed the beginning.
08:01Oh, I said, I think you're definitely on.
08:03I think it's definitely David Bailey.
08:07And if my second choice would be Sonny Sal just like you.
08:11But I have a question.
08:12If we were to trade back and we picked up a mid-second round pick,
08:18do you think Jadarian Price would still be there?
08:23Early in the second round, maybe.
08:26Maybe, and I'll tell you, there's, I mean, are you going to take a running back?
08:31If you're not taking the back that you think ends up being great or Hall of Fame future,
08:38you know, elite, don't you think at that point you think your running back room's okay?
08:44I like Jadarian Price.
08:46Don't get me wrong.
08:46I actually like a couple of backs.
08:48I like Jonah Coleman from Washington.
08:53And there was one other one.
08:55I really like, Jonah Coleman struck me in that, watching Washington against teams like Ohio State,
09:02Maryland, and other teams, they had two NFL offensive players.
09:05Denzel Boston and Jonah Coleman.
09:07Where is Coleman projected?
09:09Is he like, is he night two or day three?
09:14Kind of a mixture of both.
09:16But Jadarian Price would probably be available for them if they traded back
09:20and they had an early second round pick.
09:23Yes.
09:23He's, I think he's projected to be the second running back taken.
09:27Two Notre Dame backs to go as the two running backs,
09:30the first two running backs in this draft.
09:33Thanks, Brian.
09:34Appreciate it.
09:35Let's go to Anthony in D.C.
09:37Anthony, go ahead.
09:39Kevin, in your opinion, who was the last superstar player that was a non-quarterback
09:45that wasn't here today, gone tomorrow type of thing that we've had?
09:51Wait, say, phrase the question again.
09:56In your opinion, the last non-quarterback that we had that was a superstar
10:03that wasn't a flash in the pan.
10:06That we drafted?
10:08Yes.
10:08Or just that overall?
10:10Yes, that we drafted.
10:12That was a true superstar?
10:15Yes.
10:17Do I have to go back that far?
10:21That's the whole point.
10:22I know it's the point.
10:23I mean, is it Sean?
10:29It's either Sean or Darryl.
10:34Well, no, it's Sean.
10:36Sean was a superstar talent and descending.
10:41Well, I'm just saying.
10:42I mean, did you want me to say Kirk?
10:45No, I'm not on that, Kirk, Trent.
10:49Oh, Trent Williams.
10:51Trent Williams.
10:51Yeah, Max just said it.
10:52Of course, Trent Williams.
10:54Yeah.
10:55I thought Sean was after Trent.
10:57Well, okay.
10:58No, no.
10:59What do you mean after?
11:00No, Trent came after.
11:01Trent was drafted in 2010.
11:03Okay.
11:04Sean passed three years before that.
11:06Okay, but that's my whole point.
11:08Yeah.
11:09We have to go back that far to identify a superstar that we've actually drafted,
11:16that actually performed over an extended period of time.
11:20Yep.
11:21So what I would like, I don't have a specific player because I don't,
11:27I can't identify the traits of the superstar the way that they can.
11:33But what I would like them to do is whoever is available when their pick comes up,
11:41identify if that person is Derek Thomas as in Bailey,
11:50J.J. Watt as in Bain, or some other player.
11:53If they don't see the potential in them to potentially become Derek Thomas or J.J. Watt
12:03or whatever, then don't draft them.
12:06I'm with you.
12:07I want them to draft the perennial all-pro superstar, regardless of position.
12:15I don't see Carnell Lake as a potential superstar.
12:20I don't see Cat Up Downs as a potential superstar.
12:25We need a hell raiser on either side of the ball.
12:33Okay, so what you're saying is that there isn't a player for you.
12:37No.
12:37You would trade back.
12:39No, no, no.
12:40I'm not saying trade back.
12:42Okay, if I had to pick one out of the blue, based on their physical ability,
12:48Sonny Stiles, Jeremiah Love, the lane, the cornerback.
12:57Okay.
12:58They have the physical ability, but does the team identify them as players that can be
13:03Deion, Darryl, Rod Woodson, somebody of that elk?
13:08If they identify that kind of player and those people, draft them.
13:13Otherwise, do whatever you need to do.
13:17But we need superstar players.
13:20I have, off the conversation that you and I have had here, I've already had two texts
13:25from people saying, how could you not mention Terry McLaurin?
13:29Well, for me, I didn't think that we were talking about really, really good players.
13:34I thought we were talking about superstar players.
13:37That would be my answer to that.
13:40Potential Hall of Fame players.
13:41Yeah, that's not Terry, all due respect.
13:44Bill Green, Trent Williams.
13:45Yeah.
13:46Sean Taylor was a future Hall of Fame player.
13:50Trent Williams is a Hall of Fame player playing right now.
13:55Okay.
13:55Thanks, Anthony.
13:57Appreciate it, as always.
