NFL Draft expert Charlie Campbell joins the show to discuss the possibility of Washington trading out of the No. 7 pick in the draft.
Transcript
00:00Charlie Campbell, draft analyst for Walter Football.
00:04Charlie's got a lot of draft stuff for us to get to.
00:08All of our draft coverage is presented nationally by Liberty Mutual Insurance.
00:12Only pay for what you need.
00:14Charlie, how are you, man? Thanks for making time for us.
00:17I'm doing great. How are you guys?
00:19We are good, dude. We are good.
00:22Walter Football is a website I've looked at for many years, frankly.
00:25You guys do a really good in-depth look at kind of all of the prospects,
00:31which I always enjoy, not just the top of the list.
00:35But you had a tweet, I believe, this morning, or maybe yesterday.
00:40I'm just going to read it, and I'm going to let you kind of explain.
00:43Speaking with some league sources, Washington badly wants to trade down
00:46from the seventh overall pick.
00:48The commanders are without a second-round pick.
00:50If they can trade down, a top target for Washington is LSU corner Mansoor Delaney.
00:56How bad is bad?
00:58How much are they looking to move out of the seventh pick?
01:00I mean, they're serious about it 100%.
01:04With giving the second-round pick and the Tunsil trade,
01:09they'd really like to get a second-round pick or a combination of day-two picks,
01:16something like that, to help kind of address needs
01:20and add depth and talent to the roster.
01:24So they really would like to move down.
01:26That is preferred option A.
01:29And that was, like, hands down what they would like to do the most is move down.
01:36And then if they do move down, the cornerback and Mansoor Delaney is really a guy
01:44they would target in a move down.
01:46Say, if they drop down five, six spots, you know, in that range in the early teens,
01:52he would be there.
01:54I think if they're forced to stick and pick, it would be Sonny Stiles,
01:59assuming he's there at seven.
02:01But, you know, that could be – he could be off the board,
02:05in which case I think you'd look at Caleb Downs and Delaney there at seven
02:11if they're forced to stick and pick.
02:13A lot of teams want to move down every year in the draft,
02:16and it's always easier said than done because, you know,
02:19you need someone willing to pay to move up.
02:21Has any dance partners popped up that you're hearing that some people
02:27that may be looking to move there that they may have an opportunity to work with?
02:31I have not heard of a lot of teams in that range looking to move up aside from Dallas.
02:38I've heard that, you know, Dallas has some interest in moving up.
02:42I'm not sure it's as vigorous as the media has kind of portrayed it to be
02:49because I don't think Dallas wants to give up pick 20.
02:53I think they want to hold on to that.
02:56And they don't have a second-round pick, so I'm not – you know,
03:00Dallas is going to have to get creative to move up and hold on to 20
03:04when they don't have a second-rounder to give up.
03:06So I think realistically they might have more of a chance to move up in a shorter trade,
03:13like say with Kansas City at nine and only giving up like a third-round pick.
03:18You know, at that part, you know, where you're only moving up a short amount,
03:23a third-round pick could get it done.
03:25But other teams, you know, right now haven't really emerged as just, you know,
03:31pushing hard and really driving to try and get into that range of the draft.
03:36But, you know, teams are going to be discreet about it,
03:39and they don't want the price to go up on them as well.
03:42So, you know, you could have some lurkers out there that are just, you know,
03:47keeping it on the down low.
03:49Charlie, when you have quarterbacks in a draft, you seem to have a lot more fireworks.
03:54But this draft here doesn't have the quarterback cachet,
03:59but they have multiple positions that have a lot of cachet.
04:02Can that make this thing begin to be something crazy?
04:06Someone predicted about eight different trades.
04:08Do you see something happening like that as the draft starts?
04:11Well, I will say, you know, for me in doing this, you know, I'm 15 years now
04:17and having been, you know, one of the most accurate mock drafters in the world,
04:22this is a very challenging draft for me to figure out in mocking
04:27because there's a lot of variables.
04:29Like you said, it lacks kind of a, you know, a group of quarterbacks
04:34that kind of can anchor the top 10.
04:36It doesn't have, like, say, a group of prospects like five years ago
04:41with Jamar Chase and Penny Sewell and Kyle Pitts, you know, that kind of, you know,
04:47where you know those guys are going in, like, the top seven of the 10, you know, in the top
04:5310.
04:53So this draft has a lot more variety.
04:56It's exciting.
04:57I'm really excited for it, but it is tougher to predict.
05:01And some of these position groups, I think, you know, are a little thin,
05:05and that could cause teams to be aggressive to move up and address it
05:09because they don't want to get left without, you know, having something to help them
05:13at a, you know, a key spot with a talented starter.
05:17Charlie, is there any doubt for you that Cornell Tate is the first wide receiver drafted,
05:22that he's the top wide receiver on the board?
05:24Yes, there is.
05:26I think Jordan Tyson's going to go at five.
05:29So anyone out there listening who is interested in draft prop kind of action,
05:35I would strongly consider that.
05:38So I think Tyson is going to be the first one off the board,
05:42and I think the Giants are going to snatch him up.
05:44Wow.
05:46Expound on that, man.
05:48That would be a real headline.
05:50One, if Tyson's the first guy off the board, but if the Giants take him at five.
05:54Well, I think just from a size perspective, he's a little bit bigger than Tate.
06:00Has shown, you know, on tape, more speed and shiftiness as a route runner
06:05in terms of creating separation.
06:07Has more similarities to, you know, Malik Neighbors,
06:11who has, you know, played well for them aside from the injury.
06:15And obviously Neighbors is coming off an injury.
06:19They have a lot invested in Jackson Dart, their GM, Joe Shane.
06:23If Jackson Dart doesn't, you know, play well and pan out, he's going to be getting fired.
06:28So they need Jackson Dart to play well, and he needs help.
06:33Neighbors is coming off an injury.
06:35You lose Wondell Robinson and free agency.
06:37And all the teams picking at six could take Tyson, potentially.
06:43The Browns need a receiver.
06:45Washington needs a receiver.
06:47Saints, Chiefs, you know, all could go receiver.
06:50So they know that if they pass on Tyson at five, there's a serious possibility he doesn't get to ten.
06:57So I think that they're going to just take him at five and protect themselves.
07:02And then at ten, I think the Giants could, if Sonny Stiles made it there, I don't think he will.
07:08I think he would be the pick, but I don't think he gets there.
07:12So they might look at a cornerback like Delaney at ten then.
07:15So what's interesting, in my brain, when I saw the Giants make the trade to get ten,
07:21and now they're sitting five and ten,
07:23I very much thought that allows them to just be very aggressive with that fifth overall pick
07:28and take the guy they want.
07:30And I was kind of thinking it might be love.
07:33I was even kind of thinking maybe it's Tate, but Tyson there, I know the story.
07:38Joe Shane flew out to Arizona to have dinner with Jordan Tyson.
07:42Where are medicals with him?
07:44Where is kind of the explanation on his last season with the Sun Devils?
07:49So with Tyson, the medical isn't damning in that.
07:56It's like he has a neck injury or a knee injury that's flunking him on boards across the league.
08:04It's not one of those.
08:05It's just more of a general durability.
08:08Each year in college, he had some banged-up issues.
08:13He had a knee injury early at the beginning, but then seemed to overcome that fine in the years since
08:21then.
08:21And then the years since then, it's just been kind of the naggy stuff that players can deal with.
08:28So it's just a question of that more so than a specific injury that teams are flunking him
08:36and pulling him off the board because they think he has an arthritic back or knee or something.
08:43So it's not like that.
08:46But just from the tape, some teams feel he's the best receiver in the draft.
08:52They love the shiftiness, the run after the catch, the ability to create separation.
08:59So I think that it varies by team, obviously.
09:03Some teams like Tate and Lemon Moore, and some are adamant about Tyson being the best one.
09:11So it really kind of varies by team when I talk to them as to who is the top receiver.
09:16But you think the Giants like the young man from Arizona Moore?
09:23Yes.
09:24I think they like Tyson more than Tate and Lemon.
09:30So I think that Tyson's going to go five to the Giants.
09:34Wow, dude.
09:35Planting the flag.
09:36I like it.
09:37We're talking with Charlie.
09:39Save it, and you can hold me accountable on Friday.
09:42You can pat me on the back, or you can go ahead and rip me.
09:46But I'm happy to either way.
09:49I deserve it.
09:50Talking with Charlie Campbell here, draft analyst at Walter Football.
09:53You can give him a follow at DraftCampbell, saying that Washington really wants to get
09:58out of seven, saying the Giants could take Jordan Tyson as high as the fifth overall pick.
10:02For Washington, to get out of seven, what does that compensation have to look like?
10:08Well, I mean, ideally, they would want a second-round pick.
10:11You know, so then they can, you know, address some issues, whether they move down and get
10:18a corner.
10:19Then in the second round, there could be a nice group of receivers there, you know, for
10:24them to grab something to help Jaden Daniels.
10:27So I think that that's the ideal form of compensation would be to get a second-round pick.
10:33So, you know, there are some teams that really are reluctant to give those because in this,
10:40you know, salary cap era, those picks are gold because you're getting a potential quality
10:47good starter at a super cheap rate for four years.
10:51So some teams are really reluctant to give those up and that, you know, so I'm, I'm not
10:58sure who, who would be the right trading partner, you know, who would move up for what and who's
11:03willing to give up the ammo it would take.
11:06So that's kind of, uh, elusive right now, but I do know Washington would love to do a deal
11:12like that, to move down, get a two, uh, and potentially land a cornerback like Delane to
11:18help the defense.
11:20What, where do you see Jeremiah love going?
11:22Cause that seems to be the most all over the place, uh, evaluation.
11:26And now you're hearing about Arizona three.
11:30Yeah, I think he's going to go off the board, uh, at three or four.
11:34I think Arizona is a possibility.
11:37Uh, Monty Austin fourth, their general manager is on the hot seat and a player like love, uh,
11:43who, um, you know, could, you could point to tangible success pretty quickly.
11:48If, if love hits the ground running in the NFL, which I think he probably will assuming,
11:54you know, he has some blocking around him and quality help in that form, then I think
12:01he's going to have a good rookie season and that could help help save a guy.
12:05So I do think he's in consideration there at three.
12:09And I think the Titans would take him at four if Arizona does not, because they need to help
12:15Cam Ward.
12:16Similarly, uh, Berganzi and that front office, I can feel the seat warming up there.
12:22The ownership was very impatient with Rand Carthon before them.
12:27Uh, so I definitely think that, you know, they want to do, you know, a lot to help Cam
12:33Ward and there's probably no player in this draft that could help Cam Ward more, uh, than
12:39Jeremiah love and, you know, setting up better down and distance situations and giving them
12:44a running game.
12:44So it's not all on Cam to, you know, move the ball through the air.
12:48So Robert Sala being a defensive minded coach is outweighed by, you think the front office
12:54and ownership wanting to help Cam Ward out in Tennessee.
12:58Yeah, I think so.
12:59But I think he's practical in that, you know, that with the jets, they took Brees Hall, not
13:04in the first round, but early in the second, he's, you know, been in San Francisco and seen,
13:08uh, what Christian McCaffrey does and how that helps a quarterback who might not have the
13:14most elite skillset.
13:16And obviously Cam Ward has a good skillset.
13:18So I think that, you know, that background, uh, won't, you know, being a defensive coach
13:23won't preclude him from going high on a running back or, you know, obviously they took Garrett
13:29Wilson in the, you know, high in the first round.
13:31So, um, he wasn't opposed to, to going that route with a playmaker.
13:36So, uh, I think that, that, that, that won't hold back Tennessee.
13:40All right.
13:41Um, Charlie Campbell joining us here from Walter football, give him a follow at draft Campbell.
13:46All right.
13:46So you got love at four Tyson at five, Washington wants to trade out of the pick per your reporting.
13:53That's not really a surprise for a team that only has six draft picks, only two in the
13:57top 100, but want to move back.
14:00Let's say they don't, who do you have Washington taking at seven?
14:03Well, I have them taking funny styles if they're forced to stick and pick.
14:08And while, you know, Carnell tape would potentially address more of an immediate need.
14:14I, I'm not sure the, the love is there to take him at seven.
14:18I think styles is just a more, you, you know, following the board and going with a best player
14:24available, most talented player, rarest player, harder to get styles would fit that bill more.
14:31And what, you know, you have, I think Lou boo in the last year of his contract, you have
14:36some other veterans there.
14:37I think McGee is a really talented young player that they're, uh, excited about and are bringing
14:43along well.
14:44Um, but you're going to need more.
14:46And I think styles, you know, for the long-term planning makes a lot of sense.
14:51He can lead that defense for the next decade.
14:54He's dynamic in coverage, uh, good run defender, very assignment sound, a great fit for Dan
15:02Quinn.
15:02And I think that, uh, it's a safe pick to turn into a quality starter with the upside to
15:08potentially be a great starter.
15:11So if they're forced to stick and pick and styles is there, I think that's the direction
15:15they would go.
15:16Styles is a baller, man.
15:18But what do you make of his last season at Ohio state versus how outrageously he tested
15:26at the combine?
15:27Yeah, I, I think that's a good question because the testing, uh, was, I guess, more dominant
15:34than the tape was.
15:36The tape wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't as like eye popping as his testing numbers were.
15:43So I think that's a very good point, but, you know, I think with Ohio state, uh, you
15:49know, some of their players, I, I feel like are uber talented and it doesn't always show
15:53up in the numbers because there's so many guys that are, you know, big grabbing at that
15:59pizza, you know, play big plays to make.
16:01And, uh, so, you know, I think some of the, sometimes that affects some of their players,
16:06but I, I think he's still, you know, on tape.
16:10If you forget about the workout, you're still getting a good solid starting linebacker, uh,
16:16that is, you know, assignment sound is a three down starter.
16:19He can do a lot for you in coverage and a lot of things in coverage that other linebackers
16:24just physically can't do.
16:26And so I think that, you know, he brings that to the table that makes him more special and
16:32unique just from a tape, uh, scheme perspective.
16:36It's going to be so interesting.
16:38Uh, last one, but where do you have Ty Simpson going?
16:42Well, I have him going to Arizona.
16:44I think they move up a similar to Jackson Dart and the giants last year.
16:49I think that's the most likely scenario for him.
16:52So I could see him going late first round with Arizona moving up from their second round
16:58pick.
16:58So no chance at three, but they jump up to like 29 to get them and have the fifth year
17:03option.
17:04Yeah, exactly.
17:05Gotcha.
17:06Hey, Charlie, this has been great.
17:07Uh, good luck with the mocks and, uh, we'll be watching dude.
17:11If you nail that Jordan Tyson thing, I will Venmo you $10 to purchase a beer.
17:15That'd be a hell of a call.
17:17Hey, I'm, I love, I love that.
17:19I can use a beer at the end of each draft night and especially a few on Saturday night
17:25after the marathon.
17:26So I'm ready a couple of myself.
17:28I might be one before the draft.
17:30Thank you, dude.
17:30Take care.
17:31Take care.
17:32All right.
