00:00We have arrived at the crossroads for the Golden State Warriors.
00:03Bum, bum, bum, bum.
00:04And I do believe, at the fork in the road, absolutely, this could still go either way.
00:10I do.
00:11This could still go either way.
00:13I mean, it could, but I had my faith shaken over the weekend, not stirred, but shaken,
00:20after the Friday hug, and then the press conference, and all the rest of it,
00:23and as I've gotten through the weekend and into today, Steve Kerr's coming back.
00:28I believe it, and I will stand on it.
00:31I'll stand on business, and I believe he is coming back.
00:34I have been on that side of the fence.
00:36I have been, too, the whole time.
00:37Correct.
00:38I remain on that side of the fence.
00:40I'm closer to the fence than I was.
00:42Are you straddling?
00:43No.
00:44Are you going full Humpty?
00:45Definitely not.
00:46Okay.
00:46I'm staying on that side of the fence.
00:48However, I truly, this is one of the parts of what everyone said on Friday night
00:55and over the weekend that I believe.
00:56I don't think it's been decided.
00:59Like, I think that conversation that's coming up does need to go a certain way.
01:06Like, if Steve Kerr is buying a car right now, and you're the salesman,
01:12he is willing to walk away.
01:15So you better make him a good offer.
01:17You better get that payment down to what he's asking.
01:20Right.
01:20Because he drove here in another car, and he is willing to drive it off the lot.
01:24And I think that they also are in that same mode of, like, you know, Steve Kerr.
01:29I don't know if he has to sell them.
01:31Less so, don't you think?
01:32Right.
01:33I think so.
01:33I mean, the Warriors are not sitting here with some perfect head coaching candidate
01:37waiting in the wings if he leaves.
01:38No, but, and they also have, like, two players on their team who will be on their team who like
01:43the coach.
01:44And so, for me, if you want to talk about leverage, Steve has more leverage than the Warriors do.
01:49The Warriors have the leverage of, we decide, we're your boss, but he has Steph, and he has Draymond,
01:55and he's got 12 years of, I've been awesome.
01:58So, it's not that he has leverage, because ultimately when you don't have a job,
02:03I guess you don't have leverage, but he's got Steph, and he's got Draymond.
02:07Yeah, I guess I just never felt like leverage was a big part of this one.
02:13Leverage is a big part when two sides don't agree.
02:16I don't necessarily know if this is about a disagreement as much as it is, like,
02:22time for a philosophical twist, and can everybody kind of get on that same page?
02:28Like, there is actually common ground between Steve Kerr and the Warriors.
02:32I think all sides agree that right now this doesn't work.
02:36This isn't whatever, like, Steph Curry would say that.
02:39Vraymond, who wouldn't say that?
02:40They've lost more games than they won.
02:44They need a new normal.
02:46Steph Curry is over here, and my God,
02:49my vote for the most underrated comment of the weekend was his.
02:53All you championship or bust people,
02:55Steph Curry came out and said,
02:58this doesn't need to be only about a championship.
03:01Everybody who's been going,
03:03like, I've got to get the fifth one for Steph.
03:04He's like, yeah.
03:06Like, yeah, but can we just win?
03:09Like, let's start there.
03:10Let's try to win more games than we lose.
03:12And then we'll worry about whatever's going to happen in the playoffs and all that.
03:16I loved that quote.
03:17And I'll find it for you.
03:18We got it in here somewhere.
03:20A lot of sound.
03:20There's a lot of sound.
03:21Yep.
03:21There's a lot of sound.
03:22We would love to hear the sound of your voice today.
03:24This is an easy one.
03:26Okay?
03:27888-957-9570.
03:30And your thoughts on whether or not you would like to see Steve Kerr continue
03:35as the head coach of the Warriors.
03:38But this is kind of what I threw out in the crossover that I just,
03:41this one did not feel like I thought it was going to feel.
03:45I walked away from listening, forget the game itself Friday.
03:48I didn't find that to be terribly shocking or anything like that.
03:52But what everybody did and said after that sort of left me thinking,
03:58okay, I think there's more at work here than I realized.
04:01When Steve Kerr came on the show last, whatever that was,
04:04was that Monday or Tuesday?
04:05Yeah.
04:06Whatever it was.
04:06Sure.
04:07He came on.
04:08And do you remember the question where I was like, hey, Steve,
04:11I'm having a hard time understanding why everybody's doing the, like,
04:16let's wait until later in the summer to figure this out.
04:18Because this is what I have heard.
04:21You still like coaching and you still want to coach.
04:24Steph Curry wants you to be the coach.
04:26Draymond Green wants you to be the coach.
04:29And the Warriors don't really have some other name in mind.
04:35What am I missing here?
04:37Why is this not done?
04:39And then he gave the answer that he's given me.
04:41Well, we got to, you know, we just got to, we got to step back.
04:43We got to see if we're all on the same page.
04:45There is something going on between,
04:50and whether you want to call it Lakob or just the front office,
04:53I don't know if it's all Joe.
04:54There's something going on there between what the front office sees
04:59and what the coach slash veteran players see.
05:04And there's something there that is either butting heads
05:08or they just simply haven't found the common ground yet.
05:13And maybe it's as simple as they haven't had time to sit down and find it.
05:16Maybe.
05:16I mean, it could be as complex or as simple as that,
05:20that Joe Lakob and Mike Dunleavy or just Joe Lakob wants to try something else.
05:25Because, you know, Steve Kerr on Friday said,
05:27these jobs all have an expiration date.
05:29And he said that to us before.
05:30And there's a run that happens.
05:32And when the run ends,
05:33sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas.
05:36And maybe that's where they think that we are after 12 years.
05:40And I texted you about this and the show thread.
05:43Only seven coaches have had a longer run with one team than Steve Kerr.
05:4712 years with one team is a long, long run.
05:51Only seven guys have had a longer run.
05:53So it's not like if this ends this way,
05:56it's going to be, oh,
05:57they pulled the plug too soon because only seven coaches have ever had more
06:00than 12 straight years.
06:02And he's won four titles.
06:03So if they think that now's the time to reboot it,
06:07then they're allowed to,
06:08I don't believe that now is that time.
06:10And that's why I think that after all the comments,
06:13Steve's and Steph and Draymond,
06:15and you know,
06:16now we've had a whole weekend to reflect and we got a whole week to actually
06:19look back because I don't think they'll make any decision until maybe next
06:24week sometime.
06:24I don't think that when they look at it,
06:26they'll look at it and say,
06:28now's that time.
06:30I don't know if they know yet.
06:31Like I I'm with you,
06:33but I,
06:33I just,
06:34I don't think,
06:35I don't know if that's the question is now the time.
06:40It sounds to me.
06:42It's more like,
06:43is,
06:43is,
06:44is this the person if we're going to do X,
06:47is this the person to help us do that?
06:50And,
06:51and Steve is also answering that question almost about himself.
06:55If they're going to do this,
06:56does that align with,
06:58with kind of what I'm thinking?
06:59I,
07:00I think Steve and Steph Curry are more open to evolving than probably they have
07:05been before.
07:06It just sounds to me like the front office is thinking to themselves,
07:10look,
07:11we're all big fans of Steph Curry and Draymond Green and Steve Kerr,
07:16but we're not doing a retirement tour.
07:20We're not doing a parade.
07:22This is not a nostalgia tour.
07:24This is warrior basketball.
07:26We want it to be competitive.
07:27We want it to be exciting,
07:30unpredictable.
07:31And yes,
07:33Steve Kerr can be the coach of that.
07:34And Steph Curry can be on that team.
07:36And Draymond Green can be on that team,
07:37but not if,
07:39this is why I felt like Joe Lacob didn't like the comment about a fading dynasty.
07:44I don't think that Joe Lacob ever wants his organization to be described as fading.
07:50That's why,
07:51like,
07:51I felt like we got that answer over the weekend.
07:54That's why it pissed him off.
07:56I'm sure.
07:56Because it wasn't like disrespect to the,
08:00to the greatness of,
08:01of Steph or anything like that.
08:03It was,
08:04no,
08:04no,
08:04no.
08:05Like this can still be about Steph and Steve and Draymond,
08:08but,
08:08but stop with all the verbiage that makes it sound like we're just out here waving to people as we
08:15head into our forties.
08:16That probably got Joe.
08:18I'm sure.
08:18But I mean,
08:19I get that.
08:19I do get it also,
08:20but Steve was being real and like,
08:22he was being honest about the reality of where we are.
08:25And the thing about the ESPN article,
08:27and you know,
08:27we've talked about it,
08:28Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater co-writing a great article.
08:33And the one thing that they wrote is sources indicated that Lacob wants to hear Kerr express a hunger to
08:38continue executing the nitty gritty details of the daily job.
08:42They want him to express a hunger.
08:45So like,
08:46do they want him to go in there and say,
08:48yeah,
08:48I'm really hungry.
08:49I'm 60.
08:50And I really want to,
08:50you know,
08:51still do it.
08:51That quote to me,
08:53it's not a quote,
08:53but it's a paragraph.
08:55That one struck me like,
08:56Oh,
08:56if that's really what they want,
08:58I don't know if Steve Kerr is going to want to go in there and what sing for his supper.
09:05Yeah.
09:06And,
09:07and you know what?
09:08Maybe this is one of those where we do take the comments at face value.
09:12Like,
09:13I think that they know more than they're telling us,
09:16but these two weeks,
09:1910 days,
09:19whatever it's going to be,
09:20maybe they really are going to sit down for two weeks,
09:23get away from this and think about how do you want it to look?
09:27I can imagine answering a question like that.
09:30When you've got a game,
09:31the next night is probably pretty difficult.
09:33Or you're on a plane flying back from Atlanta or Washington or something like that.
09:38Cause you played a game the night before it's probably pretty hard to like work through all those thoughts.
09:44When you're also thinking about,
09:46damn it.
09:46You know,
09:46Guy went the wrong way on a,
09:48on a pick and roll last night and I got to talk to him about it.
09:52I get it.
09:54They probably all need some quiet.
09:56And yes,
09:57that's why Steve is not going to join us this week because he's already answered the questions that we're ready
10:02to ask.
10:02And he doesn't have the firm answers that he'd probably like to have.
10:06And so when,
10:07when he's next ready to talk,
10:09you'll hear it here.
10:10And that'll probably be,
10:12as you said,
10:12either next week or the week after,
10:14but yeah,
10:15have some quiet.
10:16Everybody go to their corners,
10:18figure out exactly what,
10:19how do you want it to look for you?
10:22Then get in the room and see if those things fit.
10:25And I'm with you.
10:27I still like their chances to come out of there and see white smoke come out of the chimney.
10:33I do,
10:34but I think it's less likely than I thought last week.
10:38I agree with that.
10:39I mean,
10:40because I thought even last week or the month before or two months before you and I both were like,
10:44yeah,
10:44Oh,
10:44he's coming back and it'll just be at the end of the year.
10:47And then they'll announce a one year deal or a two year deal or whatever it is.
10:50But after the hug that we saw on Friday and then the comments and all the rest of it,
10:55I do think that it becomes a little bit more in doubt.
10:58But as I went through the weekend and I got through today and,
11:01you know,
11:01listening to a steining and goo throughout the course of the morning and then into the afternoon,
11:06I still do believe that when all the dust settles,
11:09he'll be back.
11:11888-957-9570 is the number.
11:14What a,
11:14what a,
11:15what a great opportunity for all of us to sit with this here for about four hours or so and,
11:21and work through this.
11:22We'd love to hear your thoughts.
11:24It's a little bit layered and complicated,
11:28but how do you see it?
11:30And do you want Steve Kerr to keep coaching this basketball team?
