00:00Golden State Warriors, who have won two in a row, and have you noticed, the Warriors can't even figure out winning this year.
00:11They can't even figure out winning.
00:13They win. They win by 23, and everybody's still pissed off.
00:18Not everybody.
00:18Well, the post-game press conference, Steph Curry did not sound happy that all the questions weren't about how awesome they all are now.
00:27And I get it. I totally understand it.
00:30You know, Steph tried to relay.
00:31He's like, I don't know if you all know what it's like in the locker room right now, but we got a great playlist going.
00:36We are bumping. We're having fun.
00:38We have won two games in a row.
00:39We won this one going away.
00:41This is happy times.
00:43But, of course, all anybody wanted to ask was about Draymond Green, which is quite – and Steph said, he goes, I get it.
00:50I get it.
00:52But, yeah, that's the deal.
00:53The Golden State Warriors have sort of – I think they've fallen over the ledge.
01:00You know how they've always kind of been riding the fence of great team, big soap opera.
01:09Big soap opera, great team.
01:11This year, they are much more soap opera than team.
01:17I mean, we've got Jonathan Kaminga v. Steve Kerr.
01:22Jonathan Kaminga v. DNP.
01:24Right.
01:24We've got Fanbase v. Pods.
01:27Yep.
01:29Draymond v. The World.
01:32Let's be real.
01:33He's just yelling at anybody who will listen and anybody who won't right now.
01:38And I'm probably forgetting some other stuff.
01:41Well, Kaminga in the offseason, certainly.
01:43Well, it's Kaminga.
01:44Yeah.
01:45I mean, the Kaminga portion of the soap opera is multi-layered.
01:48You know, it's the offseason, and then it's, oh, boy, he's back.
01:52Don't trade him.
01:53J.K. Day is coming.
01:55Then he's not playing.
01:56Then he gets a nine-minute bone thrown his way, and then he doesn't play again.
02:00Which I did not like.
02:01By the way, I just – you know, I said there was a different warrior that I wanted to talk about last night.
02:07I don't like the way this went down this week from Steve Kerr.
02:12And, man, I was really hoping that we would get a chance to talk to him today,
02:16but we'll ask him next week.
02:18Like, if you're going to come out and say, Jonathan's had a great week in practice.
02:24I really want to reward him.
02:26We are going to move him back into the rotation.
02:28To me, that means two things.
02:32A, when you play him, it needs to be more than nine and a half minutes.
02:37And B, it needs to be more than one game.
02:40Like, that felt very surface level and dismissive to me.
02:47Almost as if somebody told him that he needed to play Jonathan.
02:51So, off he went.
02:54And here, Jonathan, here's nine minutes and 32 seconds of a basketball game.
02:59Jonathan makes one shot.
03:00It's like, okay, check that off of our list.
03:03Now he can come sit back here next to me.
03:05Then he's sick the next game.
03:07And now he's back from being sick.
03:09And he gets another coach's decision DNP last night.
03:15Yep.
03:15And that's with no Draymond at all.
03:17Like, for the majority of the second half.
03:21And I know they found something and they were gigging and all of that.
03:25So, that's great.
03:26Like, here's where I stand on this.
03:28I'm not saying he's got to play Jonathan Kaminga or anyone for that matter.
03:33But if you're going to, do it.
03:36And don't make a public statement that you're going to do it and then not really do it.
03:41Well, he did it.
03:42I mean, that's nine and a half minutes.
03:44He gave him a look.
03:46He gave him a look.
03:46Nine and a half minutes for one game?
03:50Yeah, maybe he didn't like what he saw from Jonathan Kaminga.
03:52Look, maybe.
03:53But I'd like to hear his answer.
03:55I'd like to hear his answer.
03:57And maybe there is a good explanation.
03:59It's a little bit of a broken record because he's been saying the same things over and over and over.
04:03But then he said something different before that game.
04:06Right.
04:07He said, I'm going to reward him.
04:08I'm going to move him into the rotation.
04:10And I would argue he didn't really.
04:12And I would just love to learn why.
04:14And, again, I don't know what conversations have happened behind the scenes.
04:18But if I were Jonathan, this would have ticked me off.
04:22Probably more than not playing.
04:24To tell everybody I'm going to play and then kind of still not play.
04:27I think that I'd be equally, if not more, ticked off if I were Buddy Heald.
04:32So Buddy gets a DNP, ending his long games played streak.
04:37And then last night, Buddy's not going to play.
04:40And now it's garbage time and you pop him in there for three minutes and 16 seconds?
04:44What's wrong with that?
04:45That's a little bit, it's a little embarrassing to go from you play every game all the time.
04:50You're buttered.
04:51You and Jimmy have this Buddy comedy.
04:53You've got bobbleheads that the team produced for you and your Buddy.
04:57And you're struggling.
04:59You're slumping.
05:00You're having a bad year.
05:01Now you get DNP.
05:03Bye-bye games played streak.
05:05I don't know how important that is to him, but it's kind of a cool thing.
05:07And then, okay, now you get to play three minutes in mop-up time?
05:12Normally you don't bring out a vet like that to mop up a game.
05:16You could have gone with Pat and Will and the Stay Ready crew, the Stay Ready Fresh kids,
05:22but that to me was a little disrespectful.
05:24I guess.
05:25To me that's only disrespectful if Buddy sees it that way.
05:30Because Buddy loves shooting so much that maybe he was like, yeah, get me in there.
05:35I want to fire one up, and he did, and it went in.
05:39He got three rebounds too.
05:40Yeah, maybe that helps him be a part of the Stay Ready crew.
05:46Maybe that, in some way, it's like stay in your rhythm.
05:49We don't know when we're going to need you.
05:52Again, to me it's disrespectful if Buddy was like, don't put me.
05:57I'm 33 years old.
05:59I'm part of the Stay Ready crew, not the mop-up crew.
06:01But I doubt that he doesn't seem like that kind of guy to me.
06:06I don't know Buddy Heald.
06:08We only know what we see.
06:09He doesn't seem like that kind of guy to me.
06:11No, he's probably happy-go-lucky most of the time.
06:14Put me in for as many minutes as you can.
06:16I get it, but three minutes, I saw that and I was like, wow, this is surprising to me.
06:21Because normally when you're going to mop it up, you go with the young guys or the guys who really never play.
06:26Not a guy who recently has been kind of pulled from the rotation.
06:29And then the Draymond thing for me, and by the way, you're listening to 95.7 The Game,
06:33KGM's EFM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station in the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
06:38Always live on the free Odyssey app.
06:40Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
06:41The Draymond thing to me, just sort of like, because it's all of the stuff.
06:46I thought it was a soft double tech the other night, but it happened.
06:50And even this argument, all I can do is look at the look on Steve's face as it's happening on the bench.
06:57It almost looked kind of sheepish.
06:59It looked to me like he almost was like, if this is how you feel, then we'll go with someone else.
07:10And then that's when Draymond's like, I'm out of here.
07:13And Moses at a certain period is standing in between the two to calm it down.
07:18But only one person's yelling.
07:20Steve is kind of like, it's almost like pleading with him a little bit.
07:24But only one person is screaming.
07:27And to me, this lands fully in the availability subject.
07:32We talk about players all the time and seemingly rip them for their lack of availability.
07:39Al Horford, Ricky Pearsall.
07:42But that stuff is actually largely out of their control.
07:46Draymond has availability problems when he's healthy.
07:48Hey, that's the problem.
07:52That is two home games that you've left early because of your emotions.
07:58And whatever anyone wants to say, we can get to next whether or not the Warriors are playing better without him.
08:04I'm not even there yet.
08:06I can't even assess that.
08:07Because if you're somebody whose emotions literally drive you to be unavailable twice in a week, twice in three days.
08:19This has happened time and time again.
08:21But it finally stopped last year.
08:24He promised that that was not going to happen and it didn't.
08:28And here we are again.
08:30Here we are.
08:31Two texts and you're gone.
08:32And you're arguing with your coach and now you've got to leave because the intensity of the tension has boiled over.
08:39And so now you're just not going to play basketball anymore.
08:42You just go to the locker room and that's that.
08:44And they talked after the game and they didn't want to reveal it was a private matter.
08:48I get it.
08:48But it's a long, long relationship.
08:52And how many of these incidents have there been that we don't know anything about?
08:56Whether it's intense conversations or who knows what has gone on.
09:01Then, yeah, you get to the point at this juncture of your career where you're not as good as you were.
09:07You're getting older.
09:08And that's frustrating.
09:10And, you know, I'm just looking at the play that prompted the timeout.
09:13And he makes just a horrendous pass from just inside a half court.
09:17It's like a diagonal, easy, easy takeaway for Orlando.
09:21And Kerr calls timeout.
09:22And I think they got into it over that.
09:24A lazy pass.
09:25Mike Dunleavy was asked recently about potential trades at the deadline.
09:30And he brought up two things.
09:33Number one, he goes, don't expect a Jimmy Butler level trade.
09:36But number two, he starts talking about we need to learn how to improve this team from inside the building.
09:42And then immediately launches into paragraphs about turnovers.
09:45I think that Steve Kerr, Mike Dunleavy, Jimmy Butler, et cetera, et cetera, have, as my mom used to say, had it up to here with the turnovers.
09:59And Draymond is the biggest defender.
10:02Period.
10:02One of the biggest defenders in the league.
10:04Yeah.
10:05And then you're going to respond to that by yelling at everybody.
10:09It's just not okay.
10:11I liked Stiney's idea earlier.
10:13I don't think Draymond should start on Thursday night.
10:17You just punish him?
10:18You bring him off the bench?
10:19I don't know if it needs to be framed as a punishment.
10:22Why would you not start him?
10:23Multiple reasons.
10:24First of all.
10:25Because you think it makes the team better?
10:26I would like to send a message, number one.
10:29And yes, right now.
10:30When you're sending a message, that's a punishment.
10:33No.
10:34There are messages that aren't punishment.
10:36There are absolutely messages that aren't punishment.
10:39Well, it's a benching.
10:41It's not.
10:41I guess.
10:42But then again, I mean, if they're all going to sit here and say, we're looking for our best lineup and all we care about is winning, you can couch it that way, too.
10:51Boy, Draymond, you left and our team played probably our best half of the year.
10:55Let's check that group out again.
10:58Yeah.
10:58I wonder, you know, you mentioned it with Buddy, like, how does Buddy feel about getting garbage time crumbs?
11:04Well, probably better than Draymond would feel about all of a sudden going to the bench.
11:09Yeah, but I don't care how Draymond feels about this one.
11:11Buddy, that's more like, do you want to go in?
11:14I'm not going to ask you if you want to go out.
11:16If I'm the head coach, that's my call.
11:19Yeah, I mean, Draymond has, I'm looking at it, it's been a long time.
11:23He came off the bench twice last year, three times the year before.
11:26So he's done it, other than early in his career where he only came off the bench.
11:30But, you know, now at this juncture, when it comes on the heels of this episode, it would be viewed as a punishment.
11:38You know what?
11:38I don't even care if it's viewed as a punishment.
11:41I mean, some people thought that the Kaminga thing last week, two weeks ago, was a punishment.
11:46Well, it was last year.
11:47Remember when he didn't chase down that rebound and all of a sudden he's getting DNPs in the playoffs?
11:52That was against the Kings.
11:53Right.
11:53Two years ago.
11:54Yeah, a few years ago.
11:55I like, but again, is that punishment?
11:58It's just like someone else is playing better.
12:00Depends on how you view it.
12:01But when you're dealing with a volatile 14-year veteran and it comes on the heels of this episode
12:08where things got so heated that Draymond had to remove himself from the situation,
12:13and the very next game out, he's coming off the bench.
12:16I don't know how he would view it.
12:18I know how I would view it if I were him.
12:20I just think that the Warriors are in a really tough spot.
12:23They've got to find their way out of making decisions based on their past.
12:27They have to do that.
12:28You know, like, it was very difficult with Klay Thompson.
12:32It ended up rubbing everyone the wrong way.
12:34He left.
12:35So I get it.
12:35It's understandable.
12:38Draymond Green, for as much as everyone's feeling a certain type of way right now,
12:42is royalty in this town.
12:44He is royalty in this organization.
12:46And he deserves to be treated with respect.
12:49But when, how about if you use Draymond's own words against him?
12:54Everybody's got an agenda.
12:55But the problem happens when your agenda starts to push against the overall success of the team.
13:04Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
13:05I think we're here.
13:07I think we're here.
13:08I don't know what his agenda is.
13:10And, you know, I would imagine he thinks that he's playing as hard as anybody else,
13:15and he's trying to play as smart and play as well as everybody else.
13:18But clearly there's some disconnect in the turnovers primarily.
13:23Yeah, and I don't know that professional sports is not about who's trying.
13:28Professional sports is about who's executing.
13:30Okay.
13:31And if he is not executing, and he's not playing great, I would say,
13:34and, you know, part of that is 14-year veteran,
13:37and, you know, he's not able to do the things that he used to do.
13:40So what are you going to do about it?
13:42Are you just going to have him sit next to Kaminga and not play at all?
13:46Or are you going to try and bring him off the bench?
13:47I think you've got to keep poking around and find what works.
13:52You have to keep poking around and find what works.
13:55And the way Steve has been coaching this year, every time something works,
14:00he wants to check it out again the next game.
14:02Well, why wouldn't you want to check out what was going on there in the second half?
14:06They looked fantastic.
14:07That was their best stretch of basketball yet.
14:11In a while, yeah.
14:12So let's see it.
14:13They played well earlier in the year, certainly.
14:15Yeah, that's true.
14:15Some of those wins over Denver and whatnot.
14:17But, yeah, you can frame it that way, and you can, you know, talk to Draymond about it,
14:23and hopefully it becomes okay because you don't want to lose any player,
14:28especially, like you said, somebody who is royalty
14:30and somebody who, quite frankly, is still your best defensive player.
14:34No doubt.
14:34You can't lose him, but at the same time, you're also, you cannot walk off the bench.
14:41You can't.
14:43Like, you just can't.
14:44Jonathan Kaminga for four years now, I mean, really kind of for two and a half,
14:49has it been controversial.
14:51But this guy has been disappointed by the way he's been used, utilized, all of that.
15:02That is a very frustrating relationship for Jonathan Kaminga, right?
15:08Yeah.
15:09Never walked off of a bench.
15:10He just did the other night.
15:11He walked into the tunnel.
15:14He didn't go to the locker room.
15:16No, but he went in the tunnel.
15:17I mean, he left the bench, and he left the bench because he was frustrated.
15:22And Draymond Green had to talk to him, which is kind of ironic now.
15:25Do we know that for sure?
15:27That he was frustrated?
15:28We know that he was in the tunnel.
15:29I don't know that that's why he went down the tunnel.
15:31I don't know that.
15:32I can't confirm that, but I'm just putting the pieces together where you come out of the game,
15:37and you just go in the tunnel.
15:39I know it's different than walking to the locker room.
15:42Yeah, you can't leave.
15:43You can't leave, but if Draymond is in a spot where he feels like it's about to boil over
15:48into a dangerous area where there's no coming back from it,
15:51then sometimes you've got to remove yourself from the situation.
15:54I guess.
15:55I mean, you're in control of that, too.
15:57You don't have to let it bubble over.
15:59Well, famously, he didn't do that when Jordan Poole was getting under his skin.
16:03Exactly, and look what that led to.
16:05Right, so maybe he was starting to have those same feelings inside.
16:10Well, he didn't.
16:10And I'm not going to control those.
16:12I mean, clearly he has times where he struggles to control it.
16:17I get it, but I guess what I'm saying and listening to what you're saying right now,
16:21you don't get to use the characteristic that I run hot as a reason for,
16:27therefore, I get to leave my team.
16:30Nobody else gets to do that.
16:31There's tons of people who run hot.
16:33Right, but people get coached differently, as you always say.
16:36No doubt.
16:37Like, we've never, have we ever talked about somebody leaving a game
16:41and just been like, but I'm cool with it because he runs hot.
16:44Like, no.
16:46You don't, that's a terrible look.
16:50It's a terrible look.
16:51You made this point already that when he left, they started playing great.
16:55So maybe what he did was actually the best thing for the team.
16:59I don't think that's what he was thinking.
17:01No, but it's what, maybe that's how the team responded.
17:04And Steph in the postgame talking about vibes and we're bumping music and all the rest of it.
17:08I would imagine Draymond wasn't in there bumping along.
17:11He might have already showered and left.
17:13I don't know.
17:14I don't know.
17:14I know that he and Steve Kerr spoke after the game,
17:17but look at the tension in that huddle when Draymond and Steve are going back and forth.
17:22Steph won't even look over and the team is all mostly frozen.
17:25And then Moses kind of moseys over, pun intended, and stands in front of Draymond as kind of a human shield.
17:32Right.
17:33Then he moves back away.
17:34And so, like, once he's gone, the tension is now gone.
17:38Man, think about, yeah, but I, like, I'm not going to give him credit for that.
17:41I'm not giving him credit.
17:42I'm just saying that this is how, I'm watching those human beings in that moment.
17:47It's really, really awkward.
17:48Which actually is a concern.
17:50Those characteristics you just talked about, think about that.
17:53Steph Curry won't even look, which tells me Steph's sitting there going, okay.
17:57Again?
17:58There was the 138th time we're doing this.
18:01He's sick of it.
18:02And the fact that one of the other players, albeit a young one,
18:06felt the need to, like, stand in between,
18:12almost as if he was worried that something was going to happen,
18:16that's crazy.
18:18That's not good.
18:20Like, good job, yes, but that's not good.
18:23No, it's not good at all.
18:24And that's why I'm not excusing him leaving,
18:27but it might have been the best thing for everyone.
18:30Because, you know, you get to that spot,
18:32and I don't know if you've ever had a verbal disagreement with a spouse,
18:36but sometimes, like you say all the time,
18:40you start saying things that not only don't apply, aren't true,
18:43you're just trying to be mean and hurtful,
18:45and, you know, you escalate, and she does,
18:47and then she, and then you, and pretty soon,
18:49we don't even know what we're fighting about anymore.
18:51We're just, I mean, we're just screaming at each other.
