00:09Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're looking around the cutting room floor of Sony to see
00:14what we can find. These are 20 things cut from PS1 games. Let's go! Before we continue we publish
00:19content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest
00:26videos. Spider-Man 2 Enter Electro was meant to launch on September 18th 2001 but it swung in
00:43late after tragedy struck seven days earlier. The game's final boss battle originally took place atop
00:49the World Trade Center which as I'm sure you can imagine wasn't the best look in September of 2001.
00:53The 9-11 attacks forced developer Vicarious Visions to quickly redesign the stage. Thor also made a
00:59cameo in the ending but his scene was cut since it couldn't be edited without the towers. Instead
01:05he got a quick name drop. Over 20 years later the lost footage finally surfaced online giving fans a
01:10glimpse of his starring moment. Now what's this all about? I've already beaten the bad guy and saved the day.
01:16By mine enchanted Uru Mallad Mjolnir, I sense disturbances in the furies that are the providence
01:23of the noble son of Asgard and none other. Hi Thor, nice to be to show up. A little late
01:29though.
01:29Spider-Man? Aerith's Other First Love Final Fantasy 7
01:41Zack Fair isn't just Aerith's first love. He's also the guy Cloud accidentally turned into his
01:47personality template after Hojo scrambled his brain like a Sunday omelette. If you think it's weird
01:51that Cloud and Aerith never realized their mutual Zack connection, trust us. It could have been a lot
01:56weirder. Early on the dev team toyed with making Sephiroth Aerith's first love. Yep, imagine that awkward
02:02love triangle. Sorry Cloud, I'm into the 7 foot guy with the 10 foot sword. How the hell can Cloud
02:07compete with that?
02:12Originally Green, Spyro the Dragon.
02:21Spyro the Dragon may not be as big today as he was in the 90s and early 2000s, but he
02:25has still
02:26somehow stayed in our minds and our hearts. It's impossible to picture that fiery little lizard
02:31without his signature purple scales, but Spyro actually started out green. The choice made sense.
02:37Green is the default dragon color, but the problem was that Spyro blended into the grassy levels. Players
02:43couldn't see where the heck he was half the time, so Insomniac wisely gave him a purple makeover.
03:01The reveal trailer for Metal Gear Solid showed off plenty of ideas that eventually snuck their way
03:05into the game, and some that didn't. Whether those slick renders were made just for show or were really
03:11Kojima's dream graphics target remains one of gaming's greatest mysteries, right up there with
03:15what is Kojima smoking. Early trailers and demo footage showed the game experimenting with multiple
03:21camera angles, which is very different from the fixed moving cameras we eventually got.
03:32Dangerous Pits Silent Hill
03:40The original Silent Hill terrified players, myself included, by arming them with little more than a
03:45pipe, a flashlight and pure panic. But things could have been even worse. Hidden deep in the game's code
03:51are bottomless pits that instantly swallow poor Harry Mason whole. I need that like I need a hole in the
03:56ground. It's believed those pits were meant to be traps before being scrapped, though later games brought
04:01the idea back. So the next time you trip in Silent Hill, just remember, it could have been worse.
04:10Censorship Galore Resident Evil
04:18Alright, technically this was only cut from Western releases of Resident Evil, but it's still worth mentioning.
04:24Unlike the Japanese release, the live-action intro got trimmed down everywhere else. No extra guts,
04:30no extra blood, and Chris Redfield's cigarette got censored because apparently undead cannibalism is
04:36fine, but smoking's going too far. In the original, the first zombie even drops their head it was
04:41snacking on for a nice close-up. And then there are the alternate ending credits where the cast get
04:45picked off one by one.
04:51Gold wrench and cart customization, Crash Team Racing
05:00Early versions of Crash Team Racing were set to include a gold wrench system, letting players use
05:05wrenches to upgrade their kart speed, handling, and acceleration, much like Mario Kart 8 eventually did.
05:10Some previews even mentioned taking those souped-up carts into multiplayer to ruin friendships. However,
05:15the feature was scrapped, likely due to balancing and hardware limits. Leftover menu text referencing
05:20changed cart and wrench mechanics still linger in the game's data, a ghostly reminder of the system
05:25that could have made Crash's cart more fast and furriest. That is my favorite joke I've ever written.
05:39The Priestess, Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver
05:43Kain is deified. The clans tell tales of him. Few know the truth. He was mortal once, as were we
05:53all.
05:54Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver followed Razael, a vampire turned wraith, on a revenge tour against his old boss,
05:59the infamous Kain, who players would remember from the first game. This world was rich with
06:04lore and created new characters by the bucket load, but not everybody made the cut. The mysterious
06:09High Priestess of the vampire cult was completely deleted before release. She was likely meant to
06:14be a boss, and while she never made it in-game, concept art and tie in comics prove she at
06:19least
06:19lived, or unlived.
06:22You must feed.
06:23The old hunger has left me. I have no desire for blood.
06:28Many helpful weapons, Resident Evil 2
06:34Another quirky difference between the Japanese and international versions of the original Resident Evil
06:39was how much the game wanted you to cry in a corner. The international release was stingier with
06:44helpful items like ammo and ink ribbons. The sequel kept up that tradition, cutting several weapons from the
06:49final game. Hidden in the code are a second pistol, grenades and even a machine gun,
06:54all accessible through hacking. Imagine how much less screaming you'd do with that arsenal.
07:05A different ending for Anna, Tekken 3.
07:15Tekken 3 is often hailed as one of the best in the series. My pals and I still have Tekken
07:193 tournaments,
07:20but not all of its single-player endings survive the trip to the west unscathed. One of the cutscenes
07:26originally had Anna and her sister Nina chilling by the pool when three muscle bros trying to impress
07:31them. Anna decided to strut her stuff, only for Nina to untie her bikini top as a joke, leaving Anna
07:36red-faced. Western audiences got a tamer version where Anna just shows off and struts away. Lame.
07:48Bad Elixir's Vagrant Story
07:57While Final Fantasy dominated the PlayStation RPG scene, the console had plenty of hidden gems,
08:02and Vagrant Story is one of the shiniest. This action-adventure RPG lets you mix and use elixirs
08:08for helpful stat boosts. But here's a fun twist. Digging into the game's code reveals there were
08:13plans for bad elixirs, which did the exact opposite of what you wanted. Drink one and suddenly your
08:18hero feels weaker, slower, or generally miserable. Elixir? I barely know her! I'm not as proud of that joke.
08:38The Gran Turismo series has been tearing up asphalt for over 20 years, and it all began on the
08:44original PlayStation. Gran Turismo 2 earned rave reviews, particularly for its wide range of tracks,
08:50but a few never made the final cut. Some of the casualties were mirrored versions of the test
08:54course, Super Speedway and Laguna Seca. There were also two mysterious unnamed courses hidden behind
09:00cheat codes, but playing them is like driving a car with square wheels. Clearly unfinished.
09:12Helpful items Castlevania Symphony of the Night
09:21A good amount of borderline game-breaking help can be found in the code of Castlevania. Hidden away,
09:27you'll find items that could have made Alicard's life way easier. There's a flashing chest stuffed
09:32with $5,000 and a mysterious item that would have shielded him from holy attacks. If these items had
09:37survived, the game would have been less Castlevania and more shopping spree in Dracula's castle.
10:01The Honey Bee Inn in Final Fantasy 7 is already eyebrow-raising enough, but as it turns out,
10:05it almost had a lot more going on. Hidden in the game's code are three unused maps, a reception area,
10:11plus a waiting room and a lobby, hinting the inn was originally planned to have two floors. The
10:16Honey Bee Inn was significantly fleshed out in the Final Fantasy 7 remake,
10:20which was potentially a look at what Square Enix originally wanted.
10:32More unused items Resident Evil 3 Nemesis
10:45Look at that, the entire trilogy made it on this list. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis is packed with items
10:51lurking in the code that never show up. Unlike Resident Evil 2, most of these aren't weapons.
10:56Among the curiosities are three coins stamped with a demon. What they were for remains a mystery.
11:01Other leftovers include keys, a bottle of chemicals, and a chain. Kinky.
11:10A Prolonged Experience Dino Crisis
11:20Sometimes developers cut stuff just to keep the game flowing. Take Dino Crisis, where you're running
11:24for your life from prehistoric teeth on legs. Hidden in the code are items that never made it in,
11:30like a locker room key for a door that was unlocked in the final game. There was also a key
11:34card for
11:34security doors and batteries for machines that you never had to power. These leftovers would have turned
11:39the game into a Dino Crisis fetch quest. You handle your things your way, I'll handle my things my way.
11:46More Appearance Customization Xenogears
12:05Xenogears might not have been the PlayStation's most beloved RPG, but hey, giant mech suits. Pretty cool.
12:11Behind the scenes, a ton of cosmetic content got cut. Hackers digging through the code have uncovered all
12:17sorts of weapons, armor and headgear, some of which apparently did absolutely nothing. But then
12:22there's the mysterious Queen of Fate. With a name like that, you'd expect it to unlock a secret mech.
12:28Spoiler, we'll never know, but it sounds epic.
12:38Male Equivalent Tomb Raider
12:49Early in Tomb Raider's development, the team considered letting players choose between a male
12:54and female protagonist. But the idea was scrapped when they realized it would double the cutscene
12:59work. Toby Gard, the mastermind behind Lara Croft, chose her not just because he thought she looked
13:04cooler, but also because he noticed a pattern. When people played Virtua Fighter, they almost always
13:09pick the female characters. I, on the other hand, only pick androgynous futuristic samurai, which was a hard sell for
13:15Tomb Raider.
13:22Unreachable Locations Spyro Year of the Dragon
13:35The unused content in Spyro's first two games is adorable compared to the treasure trove of cut
13:41content from Spyro Year of the Dragon. Entire areas got the axe. For example, an island spotted in Midnight
13:48Mountain was originally meant to house the super bonus ram portal. There's also a mysterious cave in the
13:53fireworks factory and a whole arena in the dino mines that never saw the light of day.
13:57It's hard to imagine that such a full game could have been even fuller.
14:10Stormy Ascent Crash Bandicoot
14:23This cut content was so famous it got added back into the game when it was remade. The infamous
14:29level Stormy Ascent was axed from the original because Naughty Dog decided it was just too
14:33brutal for mere mortals, but the level still lived on the disc, accessible with a game shark.
14:39Fast forward to 2017 and it finally showed up as DLC in the N. Sane Trilogy. And yep,
14:45Naughty Dog was right. Many players probably wished it had stayed buried.
