00:06Welcome to Mojo Plays, and while we can't remember the last time we jumped in real life,
00:11these platformers have made us realize jumping is overrated anyways.
00:16Platformers aren't exactly known for their challenge, but it seems some developers back
00:20on the PS2 didn't get that message, and enjoyed watching players miss a single jump a hundred times.
00:31What? Not afraid of deaths?
00:33There aren't worse things than death.
00:35True, true.
00:37Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:42videos.
00:45Rayman Revolution
00:46How's it hanging, weaner dog?
00:49Whoa.
00:50Come on, I'm kidding. Hey, I like that outfit on you. When does it come off?
00:55Don't be so touchy. Here, check out what I found.
00:57Rayman already had a reputation as a challenging 2D platformer, but his jump to 3D not only brought
01:04our limbless hero into three dimensions, but maintained the same level of difficulty and
01:08frustration of his flatter counterpart. While most of the game could be considered relatively tame,
01:14it's the random difficulty spikes and steep learning curve that can be especially frustrating,
01:19whether that be from near-impossible feats of platforming, or enemies unexpectedly attacking
01:24you off-screen, or knocking you off a precarious perch. Couple this with time trials and the
01:29collectible lums hidden within every level, and you'll be leaping to your death so often
01:34the try-again screen will be permanently burned into your retinas.
01:43Hey, we're back where we started.
01:46Beautiful Joe
01:47Who wants some? We'll come and get it.
01:53Beautiful Joe uses its stylish, cel-shaded graphics to lull players into a false sense of security,
01:59thinking they're going to have a fun superhero adventure like the MCU, only for the game to
02:04completely stomp on their superhero dreams to crushing dose of reality like the DC Snyderverse.
02:09Players are given a set of superpowers ranging from slowing time to precision strikes, and
02:13then set loose in a series of levels that test not only their skills as a newly fledgling hero,
02:18but also their patience. Enemies will routinely swarm the player, and many can only be defeated by
02:24specific skills, which also have cooldowns leading to frantic bouts of simply surviving until
02:30the meter refills, and you can narrowly escape death. Beautiful Joe is a gorgeous game that
02:35makes you look and feel like a superhero, just not an invincible one.
02:39Show them again how a hero is supposed to be.
02:43I guess you're right. Well, then I guess I should be going now.
02:48Pac-Man World 2
02:55The original Pac-Man World is an enjoyable 3D adventure that made the jump to 3D surprisingly
03:01well and was overall a pleasant experience. However, the devs clearly heard fans complaining
03:06about the lack of difficulty in the first game, took that personally, and decided to give people
03:12what they wanted in the sequel. And they may have done it a bit too well. Besides the difficulty
03:17between levels swinging wildly between calm and chaotic, anyone attempting to 100% the game
03:23is in for some of the most gruelingly cruel platforming challenges on the PS2. The time
03:28trials are especially unforgiving, demanding only perfection from players where even the slightest
03:34mistake can cost you precious seconds. Some of these challenges are so difficult, many thought the
03:39game was actually broken upon release. You'd almost hope those pellets were some kind of medication to
03:45increase your focus surviving the Pac-Man World 2 gauntlet.
03:49No not, weet in trust in Vat. DR ότιcast you Black Man.
03:57Crash Bandicoot – The Wrath of Cortex
03:59Okay, all systems are ready and operational.
04:04It's time we evened up the odds in our favor
04:09Crash Bandicoot is synonymous with difficulty, with the Marsupial's original PS1 trilogy
04:14ranking among the system's most challenging. As the first game in the series not developed
04:19by Naughty Dog, developer Traveler's Tales maintain not only the classic humor and level
04:24design blueprint of the original games, but also the series' trademark difficulty. In all honesty,
04:29it likely stuck a bit too much to the tried-and-true formula, as much like its predecessors,
04:34the wrath of Cortex wasn't the only thing to be worried about during this adventure.
04:39Underwater levels and the addition of Coco as a playable character made the game almost unfairly
04:44challenging, and the game's fixed camera oftentimes with poorly designed angles led to more than a few
04:49unfair deaths and much more frustration than the PS1 games' traditional trial-and-error style of
04:55gameplay.
04:55If you ever let me win, what do you want from me, you cretin?
05:00iNinja.
05:01What have I done? Master, you're dead. Your grasp of the obvious, a stone.
05:09It wasn't my fault!
05:10Don't let the bright, colorful aesthetics fool you. iNinja stealthily sneaks some of the most
05:15devious platforming challenges under the guise of kid-friendly. Given the game revolves around
05:20a ninja, naturally, there are a myriad of ninja abilities available to players, particularly when
05:26it comes to traversing the environment. Unfortunately, this ninja's controls are closer to the old
05:31Assassin's Creed games, and he seems to have a mind of his own when it comes to the direction of
05:35some
05:36of his jumps. The game also heavily relies on its melee combat, but will oftentimes throw more enemies
05:42at the player than any ninja could realistically handle. The game is still quite an enjoyable
05:46experience and a hidden gem amongst a sea of copycat platformers, but you're almost going to develop
05:52real-life ninja skills by the time the adventure is over.
06:01Alien Hominid. Long before Cuphead, Alien Hominid was the OG 2D cartoon-inspired platformer,
06:08but just like Cuphead, Alien Hominid reveled in making players see the game over screen again,
06:14again, and again. When even a single hit can kill you instantly, even keeping track of your little
06:20alien becomes almost overwhelming and unfairly difficult with the myriad of enemies, projectiles,
06:26and platforming challenges constantly bombarding the player both on-screen and off. Seriously,
06:32just look at this!
06:37Even the long list of power-ups the alien can acquire do little to soften the sting of death,
06:42and single missteps can easily send you back to the start of the level as the game laughs at your
06:47failure. At least the game is a visual treat, because you're going to be looking at the same
06:51levels over and over again. Ratchet & Clank.
06:55Add attention, you deserting maggots! The next time you soldiers try to go AWOL, I'll shoot you myself!
07:00Look, I just want to- ZIP IT, WORM!
07:02Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank series is one of the longest-running platformer series in gaming,
07:07and for good reason. The quirky characters, engaging worlds, fun gameplay, and inventive
07:12weapons are all some of the best in the genre and immediately enjoyable for all ages. That being said,
07:18however, the original Ratchet & Clank is by far the most challenging to revisit. Not necessarily
07:24because the game is inherently difficult, besides those mandatory races which can get straight in
07:29the bin, but because of the quality of life advancements made in the gameplay by the follow-up
07:33going commando. The lack of strafing in a 3D shooter makes the moment-to-moment combat frustrating,
07:39but it's the lack of pause when switching weapons that makes certain encounters almost impossible,
07:44especially the final boss fight against Drek when there's so much chaos happening all at once.
07:49It's so hot, it's cool. I think I got the wrong guy. That was... something.
07:58Jack 2. I've been crawling around in this place, risking my tail, literally, to save you!
08:04I've been looking for you for two years! Say something! Just this once!
08:09The original Jak and Daxter is incredibly approachable, perfectly blending open-world exploration with
08:15precision platforming and intricate level design. The sequel, Jak 2, is the original's emo cousin
08:21who listens to Disturbed way too loud and skips school because they think it makes them look cool.
08:26Jak 2 is such a drastic change from Jak 1 in terms of gameplay that many struggled with the new
08:31elements,
08:32particularly the new weapon-focused combat. The game suffers heavily from random difficulty spikes,
08:37and the guns aren't nearly as precise as they need to be for this style of combat.
08:41Unfortunately, the enemies don't seem to suffer from the same problems, and will routinely hit
08:46you from off-screen, leading to multiple unfair deaths and even more frustration. With all these
08:52new elements, along with an unforgiving checkpoint system, Jak 2 is less of a platformer and closer
08:58to a more colorful version of Dark Souls.
09:01How hard can it be? Just to hold on tight and point the thingy where I want it to go,
09:05right?
09:05And then there's the other thingy that makes it go fast. Fast is good! I can do this!
09:10Contra Shattered Soldier. What would a list of hardest platformers be without a Contra game on it?
09:16So notoriously difficult, it's single-handedly responsible for popularizing the Konami code,
09:21Contra is as challenging as a game series can get. Naturally, this difficulty carried over into the
09:27PS2 entry Shattered Soldier, and even the modernized gameplay elements did little to sour the absolute
09:33gut punch this bullet hell had in store for players. This game both expects and demands
09:39perfection from its players, hurling moving platforms, endless waves of enemies and projectiles,
09:44often all at once, and tells the player to simply survive. Most would be forgiven for giving up after
09:50the first couple of levels, but for anyone looking to actually complete the game, better lock in,
09:55because Shattered Soldier is more than the game's title. It's what will be left of you by the time
10:00credits roll. Maximo Ghosts to Glory.
10:03As proof of our contract, as long as you have this, I'll keep you alive.
10:10Based on the infamously difficult Ghosts and Goblins series,
10:13Maximo Ghosts to Glory updates the original's mechanics, graphics, and world, but keeps the
10:19controller-smashing, make-you-cry level of difficulty. Much like in the original, Maximo can equip armor that
10:24acts as his health bar. The more hits he takes, the more armor pieces he loses, until he's fighting in
10:30nothing but his underwear. The game's combat is well-balanced, but given the limited camera controls,
10:35it's all too easy to be taken down by a cheap shot from off-screen, and the game's multiple levels
10:40grow
10:40increasingly more dangerous and volatile as the game progresses, and the bosses are unrelenting,
10:47resulting in Maximo meeting with death numerous times to negotiate his return to the world of the
10:51living. The sequel, Army of Xen, somehow managed to be even more challenging, but thankfully with
10:57better camera controls this time around.
10:59Take the general away and torture him until he dies. Maximo, your fate will not be so pleasant.
