00:00Hello Harry, it's me Hagrid. Good to see you. These are the Hogwarts Castle Grounds and I'm the Game Keeper
00:07of course.
00:07Welcome to MojoPlays. And while gamers had already been spoiled for choice with licensed games for years,
00:13the PS1 is where the genre truly hit its stride and we were treated as some of the best games
00:19of the generation.
00:20Hi Mac, we need to get out of here and I've come up with a brand new plan.
00:25Well Ginger, let's hear it.
00:27Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:32videos.
00:34Top Gun, Fire at Will
00:42This one is a bit personal for me as it was the first PlayStation game I ever played,
00:47and thank god it was a banger otherwise I might not have fallen in love with gaming the way that
00:52I did.
00:52Rather than focusing on the realistic simulation aspect of flying a fighter,
00:56Top Gun, Fire at Will dropped the player into the action as quickly as possible, quite literally in fact.
01:02From the moment you start a mission, the enemy fighters are already on top of you.
01:07The game features cheesy 90s FMV cinematics that only add to the game's charm and even stars James Tolkien from
01:13the original 1986 film.
01:15You guys bait the trap, you trail your coats and generally make yourselves obnoxious, and when they come out of
01:21their hives, we sting them.
01:24Let's go!
01:26The game might not be the most visually stunning flight game these days, but controlling your fighter is responsive and
01:31landing missile hits is always satisfying.
01:34And the core gameplay loop is still ridiculously fun, just like the film it's based on.
01:39Alright, Roger that Ghostbunk! Come on home gang!
01:46Atlantis The Lost Empire
01:48Ah, the compass. Your grandpa told me it had a special feature. Maybe you'll find out how to use it
01:54on your journey.
01:55Replaying Atlantis The Lost Empire feels like finding a long lost relic of a golden age of Disney licensed games.
02:02Rather than a traditional platformer like many other adaptations, Atlantis plays more like a Legend of Zelda title,
02:09right down to the complex dungeons the various characters of the film need to navigate.
02:13Each character has their own unique abilities that make their gameplay sections feel distinct,
02:17and the changes to the gameplay styles keeps the experience from feeling stale or repetitive.
02:22The Lost Empire also has a surprisingly deep and complex inventory management system,
02:27which allows players to combine materials for additional buffs to their weapons and equipment.
02:32For a PS1 movie tie-in, Atlantis The Lost Empire is an incredibly ambitious title
02:37that deserves far more recognition than it received as simply another cash-grab licensed game.
02:43You're obviously far more resourceful than I ever gave you credit for. Unfortunately, everyone's luck runs out eventually,
02:50and you, my dear, have just reached the end of the line.
02:54Hercules The video game adaptation of Hercules is incredible not just for its fun and constantly engaging gameplay,
03:01but for its ability to almost perfectly recreate the animation of the film and truly bring the world to life
03:07thanks to the in-game hand-drawn animations.
03:09Hercules masterfully blends classic 2D platforming with 3D environments and closely follows the events of the film,
03:16with even most of the cast returning.
03:18Hercules still features that classic Disney adaptation difficulty at times,
03:22but never reaches the same levels of unfairness as other titles like The Lion King.
03:27With hidden collectibles in every level, Hercules is not only the last traditionally 2D adaptation of a Disney property,
03:34but also the precursor for their future collect-a-thon titles.
03:37The gameplay is responsive, and the level design features many hidden pathways to the aforementioned hidden collectibles,
03:44and will have you going from zero to hero by the time credits roll.
03:48Tarzan
03:56It might seem like most of the list so far is Disney adaptations, and honestly, that's kind of true.
04:02What can we say? They had a lot of bangers back on the PS1.
04:05Among these standouts was the adaptation of Tarzan.
04:08Keeping with the tradition of 2D platformers, Tarzan feels especially at home within the genre,
04:14leaping and climbing through the jungle, navigating the environments, and uncovering hidden secrets and collectibles that can also unlock additional
04:22minigames.
04:22What makes Tarzan a step above its contemporaries is the sheer speed of Tarzan zipping through the levels.
04:28Players will jump, swing, and traverse levels with the same speed as Tarzan in the film,
04:33and occasionally the perspective will switch to 3D, mixing up the standard gameplay before it becomes boring.
04:39Tarzan might not reinvent the familiar formula, but for a quick playthrough, it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
04:50GUNDAM BATTLE ASSAULT 2
04:58Given the anime's rise in popularity in the West during the late 90s and early 2000s,
05:04it's surprising we didn't get more games based on the mech series.
05:08While the first game was a decent enough first effort, the sequel delivered on the promise of the original.
05:13Not only were the Gundams far more detailed, but so were the environments,
05:18and these climactic clashes now carried more strategy as ammo was limited this time around.
05:23This resulted in a more thoughtful fighter which coincided with the scale of the Gundams themselves and gave more weight
05:29to every battle.
05:30The hand-drawn sprites are still gorgeously detailed to look at today,
05:34and the almost complete lack of loading screens meant you were dropped into each match faster than ever.
05:39With 30 playable characters, along with their respective Gundams,
05:42Battle Assault 2 was the mech fighting game fans of the series never knew they wanted.
05:54The Emperor's New Groove
06:06Released at the tail end of the PS1's life cycle and amidst the deluge of Disney platformers,
06:11much like the film it's based on, The Emperor's New Groove is an experience that has only gotten better with
06:16time and retrospection.
06:18Managing to not only recapture the spirit and humor of the film, the game also combines multiple gameplay styles to
06:24consistently keep gameplay fresh and interesting.
06:27Even incorporating Kuzco changing into different animals into a gameplay mechanic.
06:32Just like the film, The Emperor's New Groove is just an entertaining time,
06:36and the fourth wall breaking script will have you laughing just as much as the movie,
06:40and for a video game adaptation of the PS1 era, having a good time is all you could really hope
06:45for.
06:45Except for that rollercoaster level, which is a clear leftover of the unfairly challenging Disney games of the 90s.
06:51Oh yeah, it's all coming together.
06:53That's inevitable when you bathe in the magic that is The Emperor.
06:58Rugrats Search for Reptar
07:08Admittedly, Rugrats wouldn't be the first adaptation most of us think when trying to recall some of the best licensed
07:13games on the PS1,
07:15but for those who went on the adventure to find the pieces of Tommy's Reptar puzzle, it felt like reliving
07:20an episode of the classic series.
07:22Although the game was primarily designed to appeal to children, really anyone familiar with the Rugrats could boot up the
07:28game
07:28and have fun taking control of Tommy and his diaper-clad companions as they explore familiar locations from the series.
07:34The camera might throw more tantrums than an actual toddler and the platforming was simplistic,
07:39but thankfully the colorful presentation and familiar music from the series makes up for the game's shortcomings
07:44and is still fun enough to soothe even the fussiest player.
07:48What is this mess?
07:50Who was watching her?
07:52Uh-oh.
07:55Let's clean you up.
07:58Treasure Planet
07:59This is the town of Benbow on the mining planet of Montressor.
08:03But then, being born here, you know all that, don't you, Jim?
08:06It's not the most exciting place in the galaxy, but we all have to start somewhere.
08:09Much like the film, the Treasure Planet adaptation was a slept-on hidden gem of an experience.
08:15Taking much of its inspiration from the Spyro the Dragon games, Treasure Planet was one of the few Disney adaptations
08:21that allowed free camera movement, which makes the experience that much more accessible.
08:26Following the events of the film, players navigate the many levels, finding collectibles,
08:30and doing quests for NPCs to unlock the tokens needed to move to the next area.
08:34The level design and activities are incredibly fun to explore,
08:38and the game offers a surprising amount of variety in its missions,
08:41and especially in the boss fights, along with solid and responsive controls
08:45that failing and having to replay a section doesn't feel cheap or undeserved.
08:50If you love the film, and why wouldn't you,
08:52the video game adaptation is the perfect companion for a rewatch.
08:56You must have some metal to have made it this far, lad.
09:01But are you up to facing one final challenge?
09:06Chicken Run
09:07Mack, I know our old plan was less than perfect.
09:10Aye Haine, we need a new plan.
09:13This time I have a number of escape ideas.
09:16Oh, I'm impressed. Let's hear the-
09:18Few licensed games of beloved films have managed to capture the spirit of its source material
09:23in the way that the Chicken Run video game did.
09:26Rather than your standard platformer,
09:27Chicken Run plays more like a stealth game akin to Metal Gear Solid,
09:31with your numerous chicken compatriots completing inventive and entertaining side quests
09:35and missions to acquire the materials and plans for your escape.
09:39The game routinely switches between multiple playstyles and side quests
09:43that need to be completed to move onto the next section of the surprisingly large unlockable map.
09:47The game has its fair share of challenging sections resulting in amusing game over screens,
09:52and the game rewards players based on how many chickens they were able to save at the end of each
09:57act
09:57as well as how quickly they completed their tasks.
10:00Overall, Chicken Run is a fun genre bending experience that you wouldn't want to immediately escape from.
10:11Digimon World 3
10:12Digimon might not have the same recognition of the Pokemon series that inspired it,
10:17but it does still have its devoted fans who fell in love with the anime series
10:21and the video games back on the PS1.
10:23Much like its closest contemporary,
10:25players must find, battle, and recruit Digimon into their party
10:28and evolve, or digivolve them into stronger versions to reach more difficult areas.
10:33The SNES style graphics still hold up well today,
10:37and battling your Digimon shifts the perspective to something closer to the anime,
10:41giving battles weight and impact.
10:43The worlds the player explores are vibrantly detailed,
10:45and it's always a welcome sight to see the many familiar Digimon populating the world you explore.
10:51The game does suffer from a few issues such as the overabundance of random battles,
10:55but the core gameplay and narrative are more than enough to pull you through to the end.
10:59Donald Duck Going Quackers
11:09Licensed games would often liberally borrow gameplay elements from other titles,
11:13but few did as obviously as Donald Duck Going Quackers,
11:17which may as well be a Crash Bandicoot Warped reskin.
11:20However, that doesn't mean the game is bad, quite the opposite.
11:23The levels will routinely switch from a 2D to 3D perspective,
11:27but just like Donald himself, are all animated well,
11:30and the layouts cleverly hide collectibles,
11:32and finding some of them can be quite challenging.
11:35The boss fights are the true highlights,
11:37utilizing unique mechanics to defeat each one,
11:40and feeling entirely distinct from one another,
11:42with some offering the game's most difficult challenges,
11:45and are sure to have you screaming at the screen, just like Donald.
11:48Although Going Quackers might not be an entirely unique experience,
11:51it's still a polished one, and easy to pick up and play for a quick session on a lazy weekend.
11:57Thank you for rescuing me. You're my hero.
12:05Lilo and Stitch Trouble in Paradise
12:08So, what brings you into town by yourself?
12:12By myself? But I'm here with Stitch.
12:15Oh.
12:16Yeah, I'm teaching him how to be good.
12:18Just like Donald, Lilo and Stitch Trouble in Paradise is another Crash clone,
12:23but because of Stitch's abilities, manages to innovate on the familiar Crash formula.
12:28Switching back and forth between Stitch and Lilo during the different levels,
12:32each character has access to collectibles that unlock stronger attacks within the levels.
12:36For example, Lilo's levels are closer to a standard platformer,
12:40but she can find voodoo dolls to call forth a tourist to fall from the sky and crush enemies.
12:44Stitch has access to a wider array of attacks, including the ability to roll into a near-invincible ball of
12:50destruction if he consumes enough coffee.
12:53The levels feel lifted directly out of the films, and the musical score is appropriately catchy.
12:58Even though the gameplay is basically copy-paste, dealing with trouble in paradise is rarely this much fun.
13:11Tomorrow Never Dies
13:13We cannot abort the missiles! Get out of there now!
13:17I have to evacuate that jet!
13:19After the release of 007 Goldeneye on the N64,
13:23almost nothing was going to dethrone that genre-defining experience,
13:27so naturally, and quite unfairly, Tomorrow Never Dies was compared to the FPS classic.
13:32However, for those who didn't play Goldeneye or have an N64,
13:36Tomorrow Never Dies was an incredibly solid third-person shooter game filled with stealth and all the Bond gadgets you
13:42could hope for
13:43when someone wasn't in your ear telling you it was inferior to Goldeneye.
13:47Tomorrow Never Dies incorporated the many elements fans expected to see from a Bond title,
13:52including driving sections and even a skiing portion.
13:55The camera of Tomorrow Never Dies might be a bigger threat than the main villain,
13:58but for those who managed to overcome the game's shortcomings,
14:01Tomorrow Never Dies was still a flawed but solid Bond experience just like the film it was based on.
14:07Mr. Bond, still trying to write a happy ending? Too bad you're missing the key part of the story.
14:13Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
14:16Now, Hogwarts is full of secrets, Harry, so search behind every door, but keep in mind, not all secrets are
14:25rewarding.
14:26Potter Fever took the world by storm in the early 2000s, and outside of the novels and the newly released
14:32film,
14:32the video game adaptation of the Sorcerer's Stone was the closest any of us could ever get to enrolling in
14:38Hogwarts.
14:38Just like the film, Harry and players must balance everyday school life and activities while uncovering the mystery of the
14:45Sorcerer's Stone.
14:46Hogwarts itself is wonderfully recreated, as are the many familiar characters.
14:51Well, mostly.
14:52PS1 Hagrid remains undefeated.
14:54Spellcasting is managed through Simon-esque button prompts,
14:57and manages to capture the feeling of a first year learning spells for the first time.
15:01Even the Quidditch minigame is still a good time, as it's tracking down the numerous hidden collectibles for unlockable rewards.
15:08While the PS1 Hagrid meme lives on, the game that spawned that creation is even more entertaining.
15:20Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear to the rescue
15:29Platformers were a go-to genre for many adaptations of animated films,
15:33and the reason for that was, generally, it worked well for these games.
15:37The adaptation of Toy Story 2 follows Buzz Lightyear through numerous collect-a-thon filled levels,
15:42featuring the many instantly recognizable locations from the film.
15:45The game features multiple gameplay styles within each level,
15:48as well as fun challenges to complete to unlock the Pizza Planet tokens necessary to move on.
15:53Thankfully, the controls for all these different mechanics are solid,
15:56and the graphics bring the world of Toy Story to life,
15:59with nice little details like seeing Buzz's face reflected inside his helmet while in first person.
16:03Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear to the rescue remains a classic for Disney fans that has been mostly overlooked by
16:09older fans,
16:10but, thankfully, can be played on PS4 and PS5 for a quick trip down memory lane with your favorite toys.
16:30The first of two trilogy packages on our list,
16:34Die Hard Trilogy is especially notable for how it adapts the license.
16:38Featuring playable versions of all three of the films, each game is an entirely different genre.
16:44The first, Die Hard, is a third-person shooter with John McClane clearing the terrorists out of Nakatomi Plaza,
16:49and Die Hard 2 is a Time Crisis, Unreal-style shooter.
16:53Finally, Die Hard with a Vengeance is a driving game in which you race through New York to the targets
16:58before time runs out,
17:00avoiding obstacles and pedestrians as best you can before bombs explode throughout the city.
17:04The Die Hard Trilogy was the most video gamey video game adaptation possible of the action movie series,
17:10and, oddly enough, it just works.
17:13Every game within the trilogy is designed for maximum entertainment and watching those score numbers go brr.
17:19He really couldn't ask for more.
17:27Bugs Bunny Lost in Time
17:29Here, it's nowhere.
17:32Nowhere? And do you know how I can get back to, uh, somewhere?
17:36The PS1 era featured without question some of the greatest adaptations of Looney Tunes,
17:41and one that often gets overlooked for its equally impressive companion Looney Tunes Sheep Raider is Bugs Bunny Lost in
17:47Time.
17:47Naturally, given this is a Looney Tunes adaptation, hijinks ensue when Bugs finds a time machine and must navigate multiple
17:54levels throughout time
17:55and encounter other iconic Looney Tunes characters on his quest to find his way home.
18:00The platforming challenges are your standard fare for the genre,
18:03but the animations of the characters and the cartoonish environments pop off the screen,
18:07just like the animated shorts and the characters themselves are animated incredibly reminiscent of their classic designs.
18:13The adventure might be short, but features that classic Looney Tunes humor and wackiness we all loved growing up.
18:20What a relief! Thank goodness it was just a... nightmare?
18:26Ghost in the Shell
18:27We expect an ambush, so memorize the layout. It's a big mission.
18:32I'm sure it's a trap. I've just got a feeling.
18:35I'll bet you check under the bed at night before you go to sleep.
18:37It's not often the original creator of an adaptation is directly involved with the licensed game,
18:43but for Ghost in the Shell, creator Masamune Shiro not only wrote the story,
18:48but even illustrated the art for the game as well.
18:51The spider-like tank, the Fujikoma, the player controls is a technical marvel,
18:55with the ability to climb nearly every surface to reach its target using its mounted machine guns and guided missiles.
19:01Controlling the Fujikoma was surprisingly intuitive,
19:04and the variety of the missions kept the admittedly repetitive gameplay from growing too stale.
19:09However, it was the incredible storytelling and anime-style cutscenes that stole the show,
19:14and pushed players to see the experience through to the end.
19:17However, even for newcomers, Ghost in the Shell is an incredibly fun standalone experience
19:22that fans of the series will understandably find that much more to enjoy thanks to the expanded lore within the
19:27game.
19:28Okay, let's begin drop training, shall we?
19:31Alien Trilogy
19:38We also could have easily put Alien Resurrection on this list,
19:42not just for its contributions to FPS control schemes, but for genuinely being better than the movie,
19:47but were instead going to focus on the trilogy of games that was released early in the PS1's life cycle.
19:53Naturally, chronicling the events of the first three Alien films,
19:56the Alien Trilogy managed to almost perfectly recapture the claustrophobic atmosphere of the films,
20:01and authentically replicate the intensity of facing down the deadly xenomorphs and facehuggers as Ellen Ripley.
20:08The game still holds up shockingly well today with its intuitive and fun gameplay,
20:12and hearing that classic pulse rifle sound always puts a smile on our faces as fans of the series.
20:17Alien Trilogy was also one of the earliest games to utilize motion-capture technology,
20:22so much like Alien Resurrection, the Alien Trilogy pioneered technology used in nearly every game today.
20:40Spider-Man
20:41Good to see you too, big boy, but you got a problem.
20:44Venom's got control of the Jumbotron in Times Square.
20:46He's been ranting for hours with a message for you.
20:48Venom's ugly face on that big screen? Now that's scary.
20:51Although naturally overshadowed by its PS2 movie tie-in cousins only a couple years later,
20:56both Spider-Man and its sequel, Inter Electro, were the closest we got to living out our web-slinging adventures
21:02growing up.
21:03Based on Spider-Man the Animated Series, with most of the show's voice cast reprising their roles,
21:07the PS1 Spider-Man game was everything fans of the web head could have hoped for.
21:12An original story that played out like an extended episode of the beloved series,
21:16packed with cameos from iconic villains and heroes,
21:19a plethora of Spidey moves and gadgets,
21:21and one of the most childhood nightmare-inducing final bosses on the PS1,
21:25what more could Spidey fans want?
21:28Sure, the combat was simplistic and the web-swinging wasn't exactly open-world for the time,
21:33but it was hard to really care when you're having this much fun.
21:36Plus, the unlockable costumes were a treasure trove of callbacks and Easter eggs for long-time Spidey fans.
21:42You've gotta be kidding. Perfect end to a perfect day.
