00:00We can officially go out both to the River Islands guest line and it's on YouTube as well.
00:05It's our guy, Mark Spears, ESPN, Anscape and more, joining us courtesy of Kendall Jackson Wines,
00:13an official wine partner of the Golden State Warriors.
00:16Hello, friend. How are you?
00:19Man, I got some interesting basketball going on this week.
00:24There hasn't been one bad game, right?
00:26No, I mean, I think there might be one going on right now.
00:30The Magic are already kind of blowing the doors off of the Hornets, but it is.
00:34Well, Mark, let me ask you, how surprised are you that the Warriors are still playing?
00:42Not, I mean, we knew they were going to be in this position for a while, right?
00:46But this is playing territory. This is in playoff territory.
00:50They're not in the playoff shit.
00:52I know the Bay is excited about that game.
00:57The Bay was like Pat Bev jumping on the table, you know, after winning that game against the Clippers.
01:04And I love seeing all those videos.
01:07But tonight's the night, you know, the reward is Oklahoma City Thunder.
01:12How long would that last?
01:14Right.
01:16But still and all, you know, it's funny.
01:18My buddy, Al Gordon, San Francisco basketball legend, I was just talking to him.
01:22He goes, you know, I'd rather be in the first round of the playoffs than worrying about the lottery pick,
01:31like having a good lottery pick.
01:33And I'm like, yeah, I mean, because basically at this point, I guess the odds are pretty small.
01:40The lottery pick, if it doesn't move up, would probably be 13, 14.
01:46The Warriors losing the first round, it'll be like, there won't be too much of a difference.
01:53But there's always a chance.
01:55That being said, this is a postseason bay.
02:00Man, we're used to having postseason basketball.
02:06Oklahoma City, San Antonio, it don't matter.
02:08I think Warriors fans want to see something rather than it be over with.
02:12Agreed.
02:13And, I mean, the whole thing is like maximize the Steph Curry window.
02:16So even though the chance of beating OKC is not great, they have a 9% chance.
02:21They're sitting at 11.
02:229% chance of getting the top four in the lottery.
02:25Probably less than that to beat OKC.
02:27But, I mean, the thrill of seeing him.
02:30It's a good draft, yeah.
02:31Well, that's my point, Mark, is if you stick at 11 or you fall to 15, how much of a
02:37difference
02:37is that really going to be?
02:42It could be a difference.
02:45It could be a difference.
02:46It could be.
02:47You know, I remember a guy like Klay and a guy like Kawhi got picked around 11, 12, right?
02:53Well, I mean, Kawhi was probably around 15.
02:55I mean, this is a really good draft.
03:00I do think that around the 14, 15 area, it'll start dipping a little bit.
03:07That doesn't mean the Warriors still wouldn't get a good player.
03:10I'm not so much worried about the 12 to the 15 or the 13, you know.
03:15But when you look at the draft lottery over the last couple of years, there have been some
03:22low, you know, percentage teams that have jumped up.
03:26Dallas, Atlanta, right?
03:30They jumped up.
03:31They jumped up.
03:33So what do they say in that movie?
03:35So you say there's a chance?
03:37Yeah.
03:37I mean, based on how the draft lottery has gone with Atlanta when they got the number
03:42one pick and with Dallas last year, like, there's still a chance.
03:52And if somebody said, hey, you know, top four or first round, a chance at the top four of
04:01the first round, I think that's how you got to look at it, too.
04:04But the Warriors are too far down the line with this.
04:06They, you know, Draymond don't care about that.
04:08Steph don't care about that.
04:10They still think they could beat anybody.
04:14And the one thing I'll say, man, and I don't know if you guys felt the same way.
04:18When I was watching that game against the Clippers, I thought to myself, wow, what would it look
04:24like if Jimmy was playing?
04:26Yep.
04:28Mm-hmm.
04:29Because Porzingis and Horford showed you their championship medal, right?
04:37They showed you where being a veteran helps on this.
04:40And I think it will help tonight as well.
04:43And, you know, Porzingis had a small window, but I think Warriors fans, and you guys shut
04:47me up if it don't sound right, I think I've seen enough where, at a reasonable contract,
04:53I think he's worth bringing back for what he does.
04:58And with Jimmy on that, I mean, it's a pretty good team, man.
05:03It's a pretty good team if they're healthy.
05:04Mark Spears, ESPN, with us.
05:06Mark, I think Warrior fans, largely based on who we talk to every day, they agree with you.
05:12But I wonder, like, is there anything...
05:15What part?
05:15The Porzingis part?
05:16Yeah, Porzingis.
05:17Like, I think people want him back.
05:19The Warriors sound like they want him back.
05:20He sounds like he wants to be back.
05:23But is it that easy?
05:24Is it snap your finger?
05:26What is the number?
05:27And what is the rest of the league thinking about him?
05:31You know what?
05:31I would think that at this point in his career, I don't know if you could, you know, look it
05:38up real quick.
05:38How much money has Porzingis made at this point?
05:43To me, at this stage of his career, it should be about happiness and what's a good fit.
05:50All money ain't good money.
05:52I don't know that any place is going to pay him tremendously more than the other, especially
05:56with all the injuries that he's gone through.
05:59He's already got a big payday.
06:03I think for him, if he's happy here, I think that Warriors are taking a little bit of risk
06:12because of injury issues.
06:13But I think coming of money is probably a fair barometer.
06:17The answer is $235, Mark.
06:21Yeah, man.
06:22$235 million.
06:25He could just make some basketball decisions at this point.
06:29Yep.
06:29Where is he from?
06:30Latvia?
06:31How much does it cost to live in Latvia?
06:33A lot.
06:34Is he going back to Latvia after this is all over?
06:37It costs a lot to live in Latvia?
06:39I mean, they don't call it a little via.
06:42Am I right?
06:42Oh, God.
06:44Oh, my God.
06:45What are we talking about here?
06:46Of course it doesn't cost a lot.
06:48It's Latvia.
06:50Exactly.
06:51So my point is, if the money is fair, why wouldn't he come back?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Yeah.
06:58It looks like he's enjoying himself.
07:00He's a big league guy.
07:02I mean, big town guy.
07:04San Francisco is about as European as you're going to find in the U.S.
07:11I'd be optimistic of him staying.
07:13Yeah.
07:14I think that he will stay.
07:15And part of it is when he called Rick Celebrini the goat of, you know, heads of medicine.
07:20And if you're a guy who's been struggling to stay healthy, wouldn't that be something that would play in as
07:25well?
07:27Yeah.
07:28Because he could help him make even more money later.
07:31I mean, he's not that old, right?
07:32How old is he?
07:3330?
07:3330?
07:35Yeah.
07:36I mean, think about it.
07:38If Celebrini can get him right, he could play another six years.
07:43So I think it's, you know, you kind of bet on yourself in a little bit if you play for
07:46the Warriors.
07:48That one makes, yeah.
07:49That one looks like it's making a whole lot of sense.
07:52The question, I think, for a lot of people.
07:53And this is, Mark, this is going to be for future conversations with all of us.
07:57But if Kristaps gets that, you called it Kaminga money.
08:01So let's say it's 20-22, it's a one-year deal.
08:04Okay.
08:06Does that prevent any other shopping?
08:11And how would the Warriors go about big game hunting in the offseason?
08:16Because that's what everybody keeps saying.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Well, when you got, assuming Draymond, let's say Draymond's still here, based on what we saw last game,
08:28why wouldn't the Warriors want him?
08:29Like, that just, that was incredible.
08:32That's his, like, top ten performances.
08:34I don't know where it ranks, but that fourth quarter might have been the best fourth quarter of his career.
08:39So he's obviously showing you that he could play.
08:42You know, Draymond, when I spoke to him a couple weeks ago at the Kendall Jackson function at Chase,
08:48he's, the one thing he said, which is music to Warriors fans' ears, is he's going to be fair.
08:56That he, if the Warriors do good by him, he'll do good by them.
09:00He's not trying to break the bank.
09:03He understands the legacy he has here, what it would mean to play in one place.
09:07So I think at the last game, there was a game that basically tells the Warriors, no question, we've got
09:14to bring them back.
09:14If there was even any question, I think the last game did it.
09:18And so, because Draymond, I think, is going to work with the Warriors, I think the Warriors will work back
09:24with him.
09:25Which, to answer your question, basically means, with Jimmy's contract, Steph's contract, you get,
09:32maybe Porzingis is basically your off-season signing, Draymond back.
09:36I don't know that they're going to do anything, what more than you could do,
09:40unless somebody just decides they want to come and take a discount.
09:44Do you see Draymond, you know, taking a discount but stretching it over two years?
09:48In other words, you know, turning down his option, if they agree to keep him for two, maybe Steph sticks
09:54around as well.
09:56I think Draymond is going to work with the Warriors as long as he basically told me,
10:02I'm going to work with them in good faith, that they work with me in good faith, and we'll figure
10:06it out.
10:07I mean, it makes sense.
10:10That's good for the Warriors, that's good for Warriors fans, and if he's not here,
10:16then it might be the Warriors' fault, because if he sticks true to that,
10:20it sounds like he wants to figure something out.
10:23That's fair.
10:23Mark Spears is with us here on Withered and Dibs.
10:26Mark, we're getting ahead of ourselves here into the off-season, too.
10:31Definitely want to get a bunch of thoughts from you about tonight.
10:35Phoenix does not look right to me over the last handful of weeks.
10:39What version of themselves are they right now?
10:45Well, the one thing, the version you're going to get tonight is a motivated Dylan Brooks.
10:49He's already talked trash already, saying he looks forward to seeing Steph and Draymond and Steve Kerr.
10:56You know, Steve Kerr and Steph, you know, got the gold medal over him in Canada, too.
11:02But they've had that rivalry.
11:05I just hope there's no dirtiness from him, right?
11:08Like, you see Steph is going left for a reason.
11:12He keeps going left for a reason because he doesn't want to plan on that right.
11:15And that's one thing I wonder that Dylan Brooks, who is a great defender, is going to make an adjustment
11:22there that the Clippers didn't make
11:24and try to push Steph to push on his right knee more, you know, on one day off.
11:30But he does some dirty things sometimes.
11:32Like, let's just be honest about it.
11:34I'm not sugarcoating how he plays.
11:36So I just hope he doesn't have any antics.
11:39I'm afraid he will because it's Draymond, because it's the Warriors, because it's Steph.
11:45But for them to win that game, Devin Booker is just going to have to be lights out.
11:50Have you had opportunities to...
11:52Oh, go ahead, Mark.
11:56No, I'm listening.
11:57I was just going to ask you how well you know Dylan Brooks, and what do you think of him?
12:02I don't know him well, and I'm not a big fan of antics.
12:08Yep.
12:10I'm not.
12:10Just play, man.
12:11Just play.
12:12Like, Pat Beverly used to do stuff.
12:14I still remember what he did to Russell Westbrook.
12:18You know, just play, man.
12:19I don't like seeing guys that look like they could hurt people.
12:23And to me, like what Lon...
12:26Well, not Lonzo.
12:27What Melbaugh did the other day was unnecessary.
12:32And if he played back in our day, I sound like the old man yelling at the sky, he'd have
12:38got hurt.
12:39Somebody would have clubbed him on the layup.
12:42And you just don't do that.
12:44And I want to say I'm surprised nobody from the Heat got him, but this is a different era.
12:50But he is the one guy that could do something dirty to Steph and not blink on it.
12:58And that's what concerns me about him in a game like winner-take-all stakes like that.
13:04Like, watch him, watch his antics, and hopefully there's nothing we're talking about next week that's concerning.
13:13Mark, I know you're...
13:15But they do have a referee tonight that doesn't really play.
13:22So maybe he'll say something to him beforehand.
13:24But you're close with Draymond.
13:27And so I know some of our listeners, when you say you're not a fan of antics, they're going, well,
13:31wait a minute.
13:32So do you...
13:33Right?
13:34Like, do you...
13:35Do you separate Dylan Brooks and Draymond?
13:38No, let's be real.
13:40Do you separate Dylan and Draymond?
13:43Are they different with what they do on the court?
13:47Really good question.
13:49See, you're good.
13:49You're a good interviewer.
13:51Oh, man.
13:52That's funny.
13:55That's a good comeback question.
14:00Because I would say, well, I don't think Draymond tries to hurt people.
14:03Then I remember the Sabonis thing.
14:05You know?
14:06I don't think Draymond is looking to hurt anybody.
14:11You think Dylan is looking to hurt someone?
14:13I think things happen in the moment.
14:14I think things happen in the moment with him that he certainly regrets later.
14:20I'll say this.
14:21He doesn't do anything preconceived.
14:25He does things out of emotion where I worry that Dylan is looking to do things.
14:29Wow.
14:31That's the difference.
14:32That's an interesting distinction.
14:34Is Draymond a saint?
14:34No.
14:35No, but...
14:35He's not a saint.
14:36I'm not going to sit here and say he's a saint.
14:38But I don't think he's purposely looking...
14:42Like, I worry that Dylan Brooks is trying to take advantage of that injury going into the game.
14:49I don't think Draymond plays like that.
14:51Yeah, I mean, we saw it in the second game this year where Steph...
14:54That's a good answer, right?
14:55That's a great answer.
14:55That's a very good answer.
14:56And I do think it's somewhat fair.
14:58Like, Draymond with the swinging punch to Nurkic and trying to choke out Gobert.
15:04Those were just...
15:04That's a good reactionary stuff.
15:05Correct.
15:06And this is not fouling GP2 from behind in the air.
15:09I'm not condoning it.
15:09We're not saying it's right.
15:11We're not.
15:11And we're not condoning it.
15:12But reactionary and I'm looking to do something to harm somebody because I know they have an injury is two
15:20different things.
15:21And he punched Steph in the stomach earlier this year.
15:23And I'm not saying that...
15:24I'm not saying Dylan's going to do that.
15:27I just think he has a capability of doing that.
15:29Fair.
15:29Fair enough.
15:30I'm saying, Warriors fans, just watch him early.
15:33Watch the tone he sets at the beginning of the game.
15:36Watch how he plays.
15:37Watch Steph's reaction.
15:39Scott Foster's reffing tonight.
15:43And I'm not the biggest Scott Foster fan for reasons for another day over a glass of Kendall Jackson, LaCoya,
15:52or Verite wine.
15:53But I don't think he plays that.
15:56Homie don't play that.
15:57Yeah.
15:59If something's out of pocket, I think he'll take care of it.
16:02It's a scary thought, though, that you're talking about, Mark.
16:04I mean, there's so much that's been put into this with Steph coming back and so much that's still on
16:11the table for next year.
16:13The idea that you're putting out there that Dylan is going to be seeking potentially to do something is scary.
16:20I'm just saying, I'm not saying he will, but just keep an eye on him.
16:24Yeah, for sure.
16:26And if I'm Steve, and I'm Steve, I'm telling Scott Foster before the game, I'm not saying he's going to
16:32do anything, but just keep an eye on him.
16:34He's already, you know, talked about our rivalry and stuff like that.
16:39He has a history.
16:41Just keep an eye on him.
16:42What did Wednesday night, Mark, I think for Warrior fans, it's obvious, like it was an emotional win.
16:49But I heard from so many just kind of national voices, non-Warrior fans, who felt like the nostalgia of
16:56that night really struck them.
16:58So I want to know from someone like you, what did Wednesday night mean to this team and to the
17:05NBA?
17:08And it just reminded you why we all have fallen in love with this Warriors era of basketball.
17:14There was no clay, so that was missing.
17:18But Draymond reminded you why he's going to use defense to get into the Hall of Fame.
17:24Steph reminded you why he is as electric as anybody that's played this game.
17:30Pound for pound, maybe the best player that's ever played this game.
17:35And we don't know how many more times we're going to see this, right?
17:40This was like, you know, just seeing some beautiful concert.
17:45Like I saw Earth, Wind & Fire last year.
17:48And one of the key members obviously passed away, but they were good.
17:55And they reminded me who they were.
17:58You know what I mean?
17:59And they, Steph, they reminded us who they are.
18:04And then when you see Porzingis and Horford do what they did,
18:11and the Brazilian kid, man, wow, he's really been a great.
18:19You know, people talk about the Warriors don't develop anybody.
18:22Everybody, he's developed.
18:24They developed him.
18:26He wasn't much when he was playing with Santa Cruz.
18:28But Guy, anybody want to say they don't develop anybody?
18:33Guy Santos.
18:35What a story for them.
18:37Love that.
18:38Mark, you're the best, man.
18:39Thank you, thank you, as always.
18:41Enjoy the game tonight, and we'll talk to you soon.
18:45Peace, fellas.
18:47To you as well.
