00:08Hey, let's freaking go! Let's freaking go! Hey! Hey!
00:16This is how we do the Blue and Gold Summit, okay?
00:20We're out in Pleasant Hill. What's up, East Bay? Yes, sir!
00:24Love it, love it. We're out at Jack's Restaurant and Bar, which is disappointing no one.
00:29Look at you all. Y'all look fed and happy. Look at you all.
00:34All right, great stuff. We've got a lot still to do with our second hour here on the Summit.
00:40A quick reminder that for you 49er fans, the kickoff show this Sunday with our Hall of Fame nominee,

01:00and if you're going to the game, you can do the free shuttle to and fro the game.

01:10It's first come, first served. The spots go quick, so get over there now, 95.7thegame.com.
01:17All right, Dibbs and I get to talk to Steve Kerr every single week.
01:23Yeah.
01:24So jealous.
01:25We thought that you might be jealous.
01:27Yeah.
01:27We get to talk to Sam Lubman every single day.
01:30Sammy, I met his mom today. I met his Lubman.
01:33Love to catch it straight.
01:35So Dibbs and I, it was actually asked of us,
01:39do you want to share Steve Kerr this week?
01:43And the answer unequivocally was, hell no.
01:47But we did say, why don't we, thank you, Steve.
01:51Why don't we have the rest of the guys submit one question.
01:56One question each for Steve, and then we'll get his answer to those questions,
02:02and then maybe at the end, we'll find out which question he thought was the best.
02:07So, to each of the four of you up here, do you remember your question?
02:13Absolutely.
02:13Do you remember your question?
02:14Oh, yes, sir.
02:15No, I do.
02:15All right.
02:16Yeah.
02:16So, what we're going to do is go to each of you to re-ask your question
02:22so our audience can hear it, and then we will play Steve Kerr's answer to your question.
02:29I would want to guess Guru's question.
02:32It's on the paper.
02:32Can I try out for the Warriors?
02:34Wow.
02:34I won't order candles to anyone's room.
02:44Oh, wow.
02:44That's a statement, not a question, but still.
02:47All right.
02:48Let's go.
02:49Let's go in order.
02:50All right.
02:50So, Joe Spadoni, you're first.
02:53Oh.
02:54What was your question for Steve Kerr?
02:57Thank you for writing it down because I forgot at three in the morning.
03:00The Giants just hired Tony Vitello.
03:03Steve, what are your thoughts about the jump from college to the pros from a coaching perspective,
03:09and is it overblown?
03:10I think great coaches can come from anywhere, and I think it's the whole thing that I would be looking for if I were hiring a coach is just emotional intelligence.
03:26The game is the game, and if you hire someone who understands how to communicate with their players and set a vision and set a good tone, good culture, it doesn't matter where it comes from.
03:42I think it can absolutely work.
03:44Damn.
03:45He didn't say great questions.
03:45All right.
03:46So emotional intelligence.
03:47It might be his favorite question because he was asked, but he didn't say that that was a good question.
03:55I actually asked it, and maybe it's because I asked it.
03:59Although I did read it word for word, I thought it was a fair and a good question.
04:02Okay.
04:02So there is Joe Spadoni's question, and that is Steve Kerr's answer.
04:08Next up.
04:09I hear baseball.
04:10Joe Shasky.
04:12What?
04:13What was your question?
04:14My question was something to the effect of you've been a player, you've been a GM, you've been a broadcaster, and now a coach.
04:22Forget a rule in-game.
04:24If you could have one rule change on the CBA or the calendar or the length of the season, what would it be from your perspective?
04:36The schedule.
04:38The game is faster than it's ever been.
04:41We are demanding more from the players, and we're still treating the schedule like it's 25 years ago, and we're running these guys into the ground.
04:51We need a 72- or 75-game schedule, and everybody has to recognize that it would be the best thing for the game.
05:06And sometimes you actually make decisions based on quality and not profit.
05:11But, yeah, good luck with that.
05:13Yeah, good luck with that.
05:14Yeah.
05:14How do you feel about his answer?
05:16Well, I've been saying to these guys for a long time, there's two problems with the NBA right now.
05:20I love the NBA.
05:21I watch it every day with my kid in the living room.
05:23It doesn't matter if it's the Warriors or not.
05:25The season is too long, and it starts at the worst time of the year.
05:30We're in football mode.
05:31Christmas is the start of the NBA season.
05:34And then run it through July.
05:36You don't love it then.
05:37If you say it's too long, you don't love it.
05:39That's just my two cents.
05:40No, there's 82 games.
05:41There's too many.
05:42The guys don't play.
05:43Like, I want to see 70, 75 games, and you'll get more staggered.
05:48You'll get more able to bring this thing into July.
05:51Think about it.
05:51The slowest time of the year for us and for everyone is July with just baseball.
05:56I want baseball and basketball playing simultaneously.
05:59But, I mean, he finishes it off with the truth of the matters.
06:02It'll never change.
06:03I could like your idea, but it's a complete non-starter, isn't it?
06:06Of course, because money.
06:08Well, my solution, and this is groundbreaking, but you give everyone, every team gets a bye week.
06:14Yeah.
06:14Where you get a whole week you don't play.
06:16And maybe it starts in, like, February.
06:19And, you know, you get a bye week, so instead of playing four games in seven nights, you play no games.
06:23And maybe you do two bye weeks throughout the year.
06:26However you do it, you at least would have those breaks built in.
06:28If you were starting the NBA from scratch, you would not go up against the NFL as often as they do to start their year.
06:37There's a reason why all the other leagues avoid the NFL.
06:41And I just look at it from where can I get the most eyeballs and how can I maximize my sport?
06:46The window is July and August.
06:48Own those months.
06:49Yeah.
06:49Well, not only that.
06:51College football.
06:51And you just saw ratings for the World Series.
06:53Yes, the second big sport.
06:53Just absolutely dominating everything.
06:55Yep.
06:56Yep.
06:56Absolutely.
06:56All right.
06:57Let's switch it over to Steine and Guru.
06:59You're all going to want to listen to this.
07:01These are some pretty interesting questions, too.
07:03Hard hitting, yep.
07:04Guru, you were given the opportunity to ask Steve Kerr one thing.
07:10What did you ask Steve?
07:14Something that I've been thinking about for years.
07:16And I'll give you the long version.
07:18I've had the pleasure or the blessing to be a part of many teams in corporate and all the jobs I work.
07:22And I just love people, and I love relationships when they go well.
07:28And I just thought to myself, so you're telling me this dude played with arguably, not to me, the best basketball player ever.
07:37Well, who is?
07:38Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
07:39No, no, no.
07:39Who is the best player ever?
07:40Michael Jordan.
07:41Well, yeah.
07:42And he hit you in practice, and that was probably love.
07:46But I want to know, do you still talk to Jordan?
07:49All right.
07:50So do you still talk to Michael Jordan?
07:52All right.
07:52And I want to hear a hell yes.
07:54Okay.
07:54I want everyone to listen very closely to the start of his answer because the question is, when's the last time that you talked to Michael Jordan?
08:05This is actually a great question.
08:07If you had asked me two weeks ago, I would have said it had been three or four years.
08:13But it just so happened that when we were in Portland for a preseason game a couple weeks ago, I was literally walking to the elevator on the 11th floor of the hotel in Portland.
08:27And he walked right out of the elevator.
08:31Michael did.
08:31I hadn't seen him in four years.
08:33And we sat there outside the elevator at the Portland Hotel and talked for five minutes and hugged it up.
08:39It was incredible.
08:40And it was great to catch up again.
08:44That's a pretty nice spot.
08:45That's a good one, man.
08:48Let's just say five years.
08:50Damn, man.
08:51That's a long time.
08:54And then five minutes.
08:55That's it.
08:56Not 50.
08:57Pull it up and get the hell out of here.
08:59All right.
08:59Package it up for NBC.
09:01Exactly.
09:01They're going to release it every week.
09:04It's a pretty good conversation.
09:06By the way, before we get Steve's answer on which question was the best, we're going to ask you guys, too.
09:11So, one more question to go.
09:13That, of course, is Matt Steinmetz, who is at least partially done with his salad and ready to rejoin the conversation.
09:21Steiny, what was your question?
09:23First of all, Steve Kerr shocked Jordan even gave him five minutes.
09:28That's the first thing.
09:30You know, Steve, you have come into this organization as a coach, and you have been the greatest coach in the history of this organization.
09:40And, you know, so many people have become attached to you.
09:46Can you ensure Warrior Nation, Dub Nation, can you ensure them you will never coach for another NBA team?
09:56I would like to.
09:59I definitely want that to be the case.
10:02But how could we ever guarantee that?
10:07You know, this is the sports world.
10:09I mean, all you have to do is look at the transaction wire every single day.
10:14Crazy stuff happens.
10:15But I sure hope this is the only team I ever coached.
10:18I thought Ponte buttered up that question at the beginning.
10:21Well, hey, I was starting.
10:23Woo!
10:24Sometimes you do that, and you realize.
10:26What did you make of that answer, though?
10:27Well, he's watching San Antonio.
10:28He's going to San Antonio, people.
10:30Oh, God.
10:31Oh, God.
10:31Oh, God.
10:32Come on.
10:33All right.
10:35All right.
10:35We did ask Steve which of the questions he liked the best.
10:40But before we play that for you, we want to know which one you guys thought was the best.
10:46Yeah, yeah.
10:46So, first of all, by a show of applause, the question from Joe Shasky was you've been a player, a coach, a GM, a broadcaster.
10:57The power to change one thing about the NBA but not in-game.
11:00What would you change?
11:01How many of you thought Joe Shasky had the best question?
11:04Yeah, good job, Joe.
11:05Yeah.
11:06All right.
11:07I got your back.
11:09Joe Spadoni said that the Giants just hired Tony Vitello.
11:13The Giants.
11:13What are your thoughts about the jump from college to pros?
11:18Is it overblown?
11:19How many of you liked Joe Spadoni?
11:20Let's go.
11:21Vitello, Vitello.
11:23Let's go.
11:24All right.
11:25I love the Giants.
11:25Yeah.
11:26Now let's go to Guru who asked when was the last time you talked to Michael Jordan who liked Guru.
11:35Guru.
11:36Guru.
11:36And then, of course, Matt Steinmest asked, can you ensure that the Warriors will be the only NBA team you'll ever coach?
11:46Round of applause.
11:47Who likes Steinmest?
11:47That was a great question.
11:50Journalist extraordinaire.
11:52Always.
11:52All right.
11:53There's only one opinion left to unveil, ladies and gentlemen.
11:57Hack them all.
11:58Here is Steve Kerr's answer to which question was the best.
12:03I'm not trying to, you know, be a diplomat or a politician, but those are all really good questions.
12:11And you know what?
12:12They should be.
12:13This is what you guys do for a damn living.
12:15So keep it up.
12:16Yeah.
12:17I mean, much like your kids, Steve, you never pick one over the other, but you know, deep down, as do Mark and I, you got a favorite.
12:24So just for now, can you pick one?
12:26I never tell everybody that Matty is my favorite of my three children.
12:33I don't say that publicly.
12:35You know, I always tell all three that I, you know, that they're equal.
12:39So, you know, I wouldn't feel comfortable, you know, telling you that Steinme's question was the best.
12:46That wouldn't be fair.
12:48Wow.
12:49Wow.
12:50Oh, my God.
12:52Wow.
12:52Wow.
12:53Steinme.
12:54Steinme.
12:55Steinme.
12:56Steinme.
12:56Steinme.
12:57Steinme.
12:58Steinme.
12:59Steinme.
13:00Steinme.
13:01Hey.
13:02Hey.
13:04Hey.
13:04Hey.
13:05Hey.
13:05Hey.
13:05Hey.
13:05Hey.
13:06Although he did say he wouldn't feel comfortable saying that.
13:10So, in fact, he actually didn't say that.
13:12Round of applause for Dibbs for pushing for the answer.
13:14Let's go.
13:15Also a good question.
13:17But we got a good question.
13:18What does that bother you?
13:19And you guys do a great job every week with Steve Kerr.
13:22I want you guys to shout.
13:23Just so you all know, that will be the last time you ever have a great job.
13:25It's the last time you ever ask Steve Kerr a question on this radio station.
13:29So, they do a great job with these interviews.
13:32Is Butler playing tomorrow?
13:36Questionable.
13:36Questionable.
13:37Thank you very much.
13:38Questionable.
13:39Thank you very much.
13:39Yeah.
13:40Questionable.
13:41All right.
13:42That's fun.
13:43That's fun.
13:43Good question.
13:44How many Zaza Pachulia butter-ups?
13:46I heard from you two.
13:48Well, we didn't get any answers.
13:49We've all been there.
13:50Oh, yeah.
13:51Come on.
13:52That's true.
13:53You should have heard us earlier with the Donald Foyle.
13:55I love Donald.
13:56I miss AD.
13:58All-time block leader.
14:00Oh, that was good.
14:01Where did he go to school?
14:02Anyone?
14:03Anyone?
14:03Colgate.
14:03Colgate.
14:04Colgate.
14:05A great smile.
14:07Drafted ahead of Tracy McGrady.
14:09Why do you have to do that?
14:10Number eight.
14:11No, we love you, AD.
14:12What he ever went anyway.
14:13Such a stunning thing to do.
14:14Please.
14:15Exactly.
14:15All right.
14:15All right.
14:16That was a whole lot of fun.
14:17Let's transition a little bit.
14:18All of us up here thought that with all of the daily grind of being a Warrior fan, sometimes
14:25it gets forgotten to fully appreciate everything that not only is Steph Curry, but the fact
14:34that we don't have a whole lot of time left with Steph Curry.
14:38So, let's get into this a little bit and sort of, I'd love to hear from each of you, how
14:44would you describe what Steph Curry both means to you and has meant to Bay Area sports in
14:53general over his career?
14:55Guru, how would you answer that?
14:57What is he meant to you?
14:58I might need some tissue, man.
14:59Let's do it.
15:00That's why I started with you.
15:02Listen, he's an institution.
15:05He's the class personified.
15:09And before I go back to the basketball, we all have met in no phonies.
15:14He's so far from a phony.
15:16He's a family guy.
15:17He gives his time to the community.
15:20And the fact that he takes care of his temple, which is his body, to the degree that he could
15:25be doing and running as far and fast as much as he does on a nightly basis for 17 years,
15:33it is truly incredible.
15:35And then when we talk about the, tell me if I'm going too long, if we talk about the guys
15:39that are taller, they could jump out the building, there's an X date on that.
15:44And nothing's wrong with that.
15:45But Steph has revolutionized the game.
15:48Go watch AAU, these kids, and CYO.
15:52It's incredible.
15:53And the dude is as humble as Kendrick Lamar saw him before he even thought about writing it.
15:58So to me, Steph Curry is class personified.
16:03And my last Steph Curry part of this is we were doing a show, Stiney and I, at Chase.
16:10I'm outside on a Wednesday walking.
16:12And here comes Steph, just him and I, like the old Wild Wild West.
16:16He got off his phone, looked at me and said, y'all doing the show in here?
16:21I said, yeah, Steph.
16:23He put the phone call on hold.
16:25I said, for my daughter, we got to take a picture of my man, took a picture with me.
16:29Oh, my God.
16:30I love Steph.
16:31The Steph is incredible.
16:33And he's still going.
16:35Steph is the man.
16:37Oh, damn.
16:39Matt Steinmetz, you once stated that you owe your entire career to Steph Curry.
16:45Best thing that ever happened.
16:46Wow.
16:47He called you on your birthday.
16:50He gives you gear.
16:52How would you answer this?
16:53What has he meant to the Bay Area sports lexicon?
16:56Well, I'll just tell you this.
16:58When they put the three-point line in in the NBA in 1980, 40, 45 years ago, and then they
17:06brought it into college 35 years ago, and they put it that far out into the court, nobody
17:13could ever imagine at that point that there would be a player who could shoot the ball that
17:21well from that far out, and it would be one extra point.
17:26It was incomprehensible that there would be a player who, in a game, could make six out
17:36of nine of those shots from that far away to be that impactful.
17:43And that's why he revolutionized the game to me.
17:47And just what a class act, obviously.
17:50Just like you, Stiney.
17:51Not quite.
17:52That's a class.
17:52Yeah, no, he's on another level.
17:55He's actually good at golf.
17:56Oh, dang.
17:58Cold-blooded.
17:59Is there anything he's not good at?
18:00I mean, you said that it's been the best thing in your career, though.
18:04Like, what has it meant directly to you?
18:07I got to watch a guy.
18:09I've gotten to watch a guy for 15, 17 years that made me say, jeez, like, certain guys
18:17come along, and they play it differently, and he plays it differently, like Jordan did,
18:25like Bird did, like Magic did, like LeBron did.
18:29All in their own way, and so he's made basketball enjoyable for me for the last 15 years.
18:37Just wondering what you're going to see night to night.
18:39Stiney, take us back.
18:40He leads, I've never, here's what he does, Mark.
18:44He leaves you shaking your head six times a game.
18:49Even 16 years in, I'm like, this guy, I can't believe this.
18:53I'll just see the head coach, too.
18:55Stiney, take me back to the day you first met him.
18:58So what were you doing?
18:59You've been on air for how many years on radio, but at the time you were a beat reporter?
19:04Yeah, when he started.
19:06So how many years in are you on the beat when you first meet him?
19:1112 years.
19:1312 years of covering the Warriors.
19:15Yeah.
19:15And what were the Warriors before Steph Curry?
19:17They were.
19:18A great time out.
19:19Yeah, they were nothing.
19:20They were nothing.
19:21And the thing is, when he walked through the door, nobody was like, here he comes.
19:26At all.
19:26It's all going to be different.
19:28What happened day one?
19:30This is great.
19:31Tell the story.
19:32Steven Jackson demanded a trade and Monte Ellis said, I can't play with him.
19:36We're too small.
19:37Day one.
19:38Reason one.
19:40How does that, by the way, who did they say that to?
19:44The media.
19:44I mean, they just publicly and immediately stated this to a microphone.
19:51Well, they would come down to a table, a round table, and there'd be media around.
19:56And, you know, Monte Ellis sat down and, hey, what do you think of Steph Curry?
20:01It's a good pick.
20:02You know, I don't get to see any chances.
20:04You think you guys can be successful?
20:05I don't think so.
20:07How come?
20:07We're too small.
20:08What on earth?
20:09Well, at the time.
20:10At the time.
20:11At the time.
20:12Nobody knew that he was getting on that.
20:13No, he shouldn't have said it.
20:15But at the time.
20:15I'll just say.
20:16I'll say this on behalf of everybody sitting at this table and everyone here at Jack's
20:21Restaurant.
20:22Without Steph Curry, we're not here.
20:24No.
20:24And we're not here as in we're not allowed to come here and eat.
20:28This station is not a station.
20:30I agree.
20:31Spadoni's not Spadoni.
20:32Butcher doesn't launch the morning show in a new stratosphere.
20:35It's true.
20:36Willard's still doing giants from his house.
20:39This does not exist.
20:41I'm into you.
20:41Without Steph Curry.
20:43The Warriors were on another station.
20:45That's a good point.
20:45That station schmitted the bed.
20:48That's a good point.
20:49We were able to scoop and score.
20:51And they became a dynasty.
20:52That's incredible, man.
20:53Because of him.
20:54Wow.
20:54I was able to have a second family.
20:56He built a chase center, too.
20:57I got a four-bedroom house in his neighborhood.
20:59And Willard, he built a chase center, too.
21:01I mean, if you want to live and leave fun, if you want to put the rat on the table brought
21:05to you by Atko Pest Control, 95-7 the game is the wolf again.
21:10Wow.
21:10It's country music again.
21:12It's Morgan Wallen, not Joe Spadoni.
21:14Oh, thank you, Joe.
21:16Let me add this in, too.
21:18End of story.
21:18I think that's a great, great answer.
21:21And obviously, all of us are personally tied to that answer.
21:25I also think Steph Curry, and you know, earlier we're getting into the whole Bill Walsh versus
21:30Steve Kerr thing, I think there's a completely different conversation if you were to say,
21:34for instance, Steph Curry and Joe Montana.
21:37I think Steph Curry has redefined and reset the bar for what it means to be a sports icon.
21:46And I mean that even nationally.
21:48Because A, he's never won another jersey.
21:51Yes, there are others who've done that.
21:53But B, seemingly, I've never encountered another athlete that seems to never even trip on a curb
22:02off of the court or the field.
22:04There has never been one day or one person who I've met who's had the slightest bad experience
22:15with Steph Curry.
22:17I don't, and we're up here with an opportunity to maybe have some experiences
22:22and know some things that other people don't.
22:26And I'm telling you honestly, I don't know one person who's ever had one negative experience
22:34with Steph Curry.
22:35And to me, that makes him one of one.
22:38I think your answer to this, both of you guys, would be really, really cool.
22:43So hold him.
22:44Thank you for saying that.
22:45Hold him.
22:46Hold him.
22:47Oh, we didn't know.
22:48But you ain't going to match dibs.
22:50Coming up.
