00:00let's get to our top story comes out of the national basketball association today it does
00:04appear as though we're putting some of this story to bed from last year damon jones is expected to
00:10plead guilty in the sports gambling case he previously pleaded not guilty to indictments
00:16charging him with profiting from rigged poker games and providing sports betters with non-public
00:21information but now looks like he's pleading guilty to this it involved lebron james and
00:26anthony davis while he worked for the lakers allegedly disseminating some information to
00:31sports betters jones will plead guilty meanwhile fanatics has made a big announcement they're
00:37doing combos aka parlays they're not calling it parlays but they're calling it combos which
00:44allows prediction market customers to combine different outcomes like player props winners
00:49spreads totals very similar to a same game parlay so in this world of prediction markets
00:55were creeping closer and closer to actually sports wagering as well speaking of close wow
01:01what a performance last night for cleveland guardian starter parker messick he had a ninth inning no
01:07hitter going and then he gave up a hit to start the ninth and gave up another hit and he
01:12ended up
01:12getting pulled from the game after over 100 pitches the guardians still win the game by a final score of
01:18four to two messick nine strikeouts eight innings pitch he's been the best starter for cleveland go
01:23figure that this season here is his manager steven vote on his performance and the win
01:29yeah he pushes the tempo um you know he dictates how quick that game's gonna go
01:34attacks the strike zone works quick we talk about it feel like every five days and um that was that
01:40was very special what we got to watch tonight um that's a unbelievably talented lineup you know
01:47that he took a no-hitter into the ninth against um and uh just continued to attack continue to give
01:53them different looks throughout the whole game he and hedgy were i mean magnificent with their sequencing
01:59never the same sequence once never really doubled up a ton i mean just that arsenal and
02:05the way they just that was a that was a beautiful beautiful game great on the pitching side now
02:11let's get to the hitting side where mike trout is the hottest player going in baseball right now he
02:15homered for the fourth straight game yesterday angels win 11 to four also by the way aaron judge
02:21homered in the game but it hasn't seemed to matter the angels playing some good baseball right now and
02:26it seems like trout really enjoys playing in the bronx as well here he is after the game on just
02:32how hot he is
02:33you are the first visiting player to ever homer in four consecutive games at yankee stadium
02:37considering how much you enjoy playing here what's that mean to you no it means a lot i mean there's
02:41been a lot of great players that uh obviously played here it's uh you know it's it's awesome
02:46special with your family here oh yeah no doubt no doubt for sure uh aaron judge called you the greatest
02:51of all time after the game the other night i know you two have a pretty good relationship but how
02:55much fun was it with the two of you going toe-to-toe these last four games yeah that was
02:58really
02:59fun that first game you know set it off and uh you know it was blow for blow for both
03:03for both
03:03teams uh not just me and judge it's uh it was it's fun the fun series uh obviously lost a
03:09couple
03:09tough ones but uh glad we got that bounce back from last night after you know tough ninth inning but
03:16uh
03:16we took ownership of it and we turned the page understanding you wouldn't like to see it happen
03:20against your team but how much appreciation do you have from mike trout yeah it's uh unreal um uh
03:28cool cool showing from him and judgy uh all series uh obviously you don't want that against us but
03:33uh you gotta acknowledge uh the greatness um and uh yeah i mean there's a deciding factor today so
03:41um yeah not what we want but obviously um great talent good to see trout back and
03:50healthy playing baseball meanwhile the padres are rolling off wins eight straight they sweep the
03:55mariners five to two they've won 11 out of their last 12 walker buehler gets the win the big story
04:01from this is the scoreless streak for relief pitcher mason miller he's now up to 30.2 consecutive
04:08innings pitched dating back to last season wow what a performance he's had and he discussed the streak
04:14after the game eight straight wins this team is absolutely rolling a perfect home stand from your
04:20perspective in the back end of that bullpen what is going so right for this team defense and the
04:26guys are having timely abs you know we're hitting some long balls too but a lot of good abs a
04:30lot of
04:30two-strike battles passing the stick to the next guy having a lot of trust and then you know the
04:34guy
04:34behind you uh you know enough can't be said about those guys how about the tampa bay rays they
04:39got a streak of their own nine in a row they beat the white socks five to three seems like
04:44everybody
04:44beats the white socks but they win as road favorites junior camonero homered for the second straight game
04:49and it's been a nice run for the rays at the start of the season meanwhile the giants one hit
04:55the reds
04:55they win three to nothing landon roop had six strikeouts and six innings pitched but tempers flared
05:01after the game in the end with benches clearing and sal stewart the young rookie talked about what
05:10happened after to get him so upset shook out and came down the mound and looking at me and pointing
05:16at me and just yelling so i tempers flared things happen and it's all good uh i'm not gonna make
05:22light
05:22into that we won the series and uh things happen you know um tough game today but we won the
05:27series and
05:28we're gonna go to minnesota and play so i'm not gonna talk more about that uh we leave things on
05:34the field and whatever happens happens what did you think of the way chase burns pitched today he
05:39threw really well uh like i said yesterday he's gonna have a really long career uh he's a great
05:43player and great friend great start for stewart and the reds despite the loss yesterday the brewers beat
05:49the blue jays two to one for the second straight day brandon sprote six innings pitched six strikeouts
05:56and pat murphy talked after the game with all of the bunts being used by his club three straight in
06:03this game maybe bunts are back i think it's coming back you know i think it's uh it's obviously a
06:09very
06:09difficult thing for a pitcher to do his job the way we do it today and there's a lot of
06:15really big men
06:16pitching and then to have to run break down secure the baseball get your eyes on the target and make
06:23a
06:23good throw with that type of adrenaline and that type of movement uh out of the guy running the first
06:31i think it's legit we've done it for the last couple years you've seen it
06:37not always successful but the threat of the month then becomes a defensive positioning thing too
06:44brewers will be in miami this weekend i'll be checking them out i saw the rockies earlier this
06:48season they got off to a tough start bounce back then they lost six in a row but broke that
06:52streak
06:53yesterday they beat the astros by a final of three to two chase dollander five and a third
06:58nine strikeouts the nationals beat the pirates in ten innings so they split their four game series
07:03marcelo zuna did homer in the loss his first home run of the season pirates signed him in the offseason
07:08the rangers came all the way back with four runs to beat the a's in the ninth as they win
07:14as slight road
07:15favorites josh young went three for five with a home run and how about those detroit tigers they have been
07:20red hot they won six straight games after an hour rain delay they came back and all the way back
07:25to
07:25beat the royals ten to nine dylan dingler hit a home run two for five with two runs driven in
07:33meanwhile the national hockey league stanley cup playoffs about to get underway can't wait to see
07:37that get started congrats to connor mcdavid he wins his sixth art ross trophy mcdavid had four assists
07:43to clinch it with 138 points oilers six canucks one the stanley cup playoffs as we mentioned are set
07:49kings versus avalanche wild versus stars mammoth golden knights and ducks oilers out west in the east
07:55it's bruins sabers canadians lightning senators hurricanes flyers penguins and by the way current
08:01odds have the colorado avalanche as current favorites to win the stanley cup followed by the
08:06tampa bay lightning carolina hurricanes dallas stars and vegas golden knights last year's runner
08:12up edmonton they are 14 to 1 we'll see if mcdavid and company can capture the cup welcome back to
08:20newswire here on this friday we've got sam mcquillen here from legal sports report to go over the latest in
08:24sports betting and we begin with daily fantasy here today a little bit of a surprise story over at
08:29legalsportsreport.com which you can read about sam well i mean this could certainly be a game changer we
08:35don't even lead off with prediction markets today are you kidding me we're leading off with daily
08:40fantasy sports no offense to dfs but there's probably some people that are like wait a second
08:44that's still around at this point with sports betting and prediction markets and everything else
08:48the state of virginia sam is looking to dial it back a decade and say you got to pay taxes
08:55on dfs
08:55what's going on here be funny that we're talking about a daily fantasy sports now that we have all
09:03these other forms of sports betting that are popping up and similar challenges that went on
09:08with dfs now happening to them but virginia uh i think about 15 10 years after uh they formally okayed
09:15daily fantasy sports betting now they're trying to make some changes finally uh one of that is to
09:20actually tax the industry for the first time because of like the craziness of uh state fantasy laws and
09:28how they can differ some states have really strict laws and rules governing the products a lot of
09:34other states like texas is one uh really have it says it's illegal but they're still there anyway and
09:39it hasn't been enforced virginia is kind of in the middle where it's been allowed but it doesn't have
09:44really any uh legislative or governing body that really makes rules for these products so they finally
09:50came out with some new ones uh the timing is definitely interesting given all you know the
09:54prediction market activity going on lawsuits and states involved with but among some of the other
10:00changes craig notably is going to be the um the ban on uh player versus house contests on uh fantasy
10:08sports products which we talked about maybe a couple years ago when states really started to crack down
10:12on uh pick them products from underdog and prize picks you know these uh pick a couple player props
10:19and kind of make a parlay um that a lot of states came down against so that'll target those products
10:24from those companies they've largely avoided uh these kind of you know similar changes in other
10:29states by just changing the back end of the product where instead of getting you know a hundred dollars
10:34from prize picks itself when you win that hundred dollars comes directly from a pool a prize pool of
10:41other players entry fees so it's effectively the same product it just for the company on the back
10:46end has looked a little bit different but you know there's a lot of controversial things out
10:50here in sports betting right now especially um with the rules around it so maybe this is just an
10:55opportunity where the legislature could score an easy win and make some small changes on a smaller
11:00product but yeah definitely interesting uh it's coming around this at this time while so much other
11:05stuff is on kind of everyone else's plate 2025 uh sports betting controversies you know certainly
11:12there were a lot of them but maybe no bigger than the ones involving the cleveland guardians players and
11:17allegedly throwing different pitches to try to help others make money and so the state of ohio seems
11:23to be trying to put the genie back in the bottle so to speak sam where they would prefer if
11:27there was
11:28no sports betting at all and i don't know that the two stories are correlated but that was a major
11:33story
11:33from last year uh simply put is this possible sam like i mean can you possibly just end sports betting
11:40based on a couple of incidents it doesn't seem realistic to me but they are just at least from what
11:45i'm
11:45seeing discussing ending online sports betting maybe there will still be retail shops i guess
11:51there could be more local monitoring if you could dive into this a little bit more and tell us what
11:55they're thinking yeah i think we know pretty well that no matter what any lawmaker does ever even if it
12:03was a bill that kills or makes sports betting illegal sports betting is still going to happen and it's been
12:09happening uh throughout the past you know i don't know however many hundreds of years of sporting
12:15events in this country which is one of the reasons states legalized sports betting in the first place
12:18state like ohio so it's it does it's not really a thing that they're able to do is end the
12:25actual
12:25practice but when you have these um you know these incidents these headlines that you mentioned from the
12:31cleveland guardians pitchers uh in sports betting scandals and you know people talk about legal sports
12:36betting as encouraging bad actors which you know could be true could not be true it makes a lot of
12:42these things more politically palpable at least for lawmakers in ohio to actually propose ending all
12:49online sports betting which we know is where the bulk of all the legal activity is and also in the
12:54proposal they're um they're proposing ending uh player props and parlays so other lawmakers in ohio have
13:01come out and you know said exactly that that this is kind of just would not accomplish the goal if
13:06the
13:06goal is to prevent sports betting scandals if the goal is to stop people from you know the bad parts
13:12of sports betting making it illegal uh most of it anyway the online activity kind of just gets rid of
13:18what the state did a couple years ago and the whole reason that legalized sports betting in the first
13:21place now you know obviously ohio is that state where those cleveland guardians pitchers uh were involved
13:27in that alleged case of you know rigging pitches we saw governor mike dewine come out after that very
13:33vocally and say legalizing sports betting is i think he regrets most as the governor in the state
13:38he was very instrumental in working with the mlb on placing those caps on micro bet markets uh that
13:45were allegedly involved in that case so ohio has been kind of a hotbed for some of this political
13:49reaction when the lawmakers are actually able to end online sports betting i don't think so i think
13:54you know the fellow lawmakers and legislature will not see this as just kind of a non-starter
14:00something they're not going to do but what it could end up in craig is a baked down proposal the
14:05bill could get whittled down to perhaps remove player props perhaps remove parlays perhaps do
14:09something smaller as a result of this kind of bigger push so it's definitely something we're going to keep
14:15watching uh that could pop up in other states as well any kind of restrictions that come out of all
14:20of
14:20these crazy cases we've had over the past couple years and you know you mentioned that might be the
14:25biggest one we've had we're just saying a lot considering the fact that uh you know uh nba head coach
14:30i think the second day of the season was arrested by the fbi and you have the terry rogier case
14:35and
14:35every day it just seems like there's more of these scandals which in turn lead to these kind of proposals
14:41finally let's get to this lawsuit that we found out about right before the ncaa tournament sam and that was
14:46draft kings being sued by the ncaa for infringing upon college basketball trademarks should draft
14:54kings have been more careful with this sam should they have not used these or generally speaking
14:59we see so much infringement through the years that's not caught or not enforced was this one of those
15:05simply that was caught or did draft kings really go too far yeah well draft king certainly does not
15:13think it went too far it certainly does not think that it shouldn't have used the name march badness
15:19on its betting markets on the app you know when you go to bet on the ncaa tournament you open
15:24it up
15:24you click college basketball and it says march madness games draft king says that was to have a
15:29distinction between any other sport that it offers it does a similar you know a similar thing with
15:34nit and it argues that it's not actually using the march madness logo or the trademark in that sense but
15:39it's protected by the first amendment free speech so draft kings definitely does not think that it
15:44did anything wrong here they've asserted that multiple times the ncaa meanwhile which you know
15:49the lawsuit just kind of came on the second day of the tournament sort of out of nowhere they've been
15:53very
15:54vocal about wanting the case to move very fast before next year's tournament they filed with the district
16:01court just yesterday urging them to speed up the timeline for the timeline for the trial so that march
16:07madness is not underway again next year and draft kings is using the same thing uh they say the
16:12trial will probably take you know pretty quickly and not that long um but notably we've had other
16:17sports books kind of change what they're doing as a result we had that mgm stop using the term march
16:22madness i think they call them men's march tournament games instead so it's always interesting with the
16:27nuances of you know what these sports books and other platforms able to offer you know if you go
16:32on college or poly market for example which doesn't have a deal with the ncaa um or the nfl for
16:38that
16:39matter they talk about the super bowl as the big game you know there's other ways to try to allude
16:43to
16:43this so i think that's what the ncaa is trying to argue the draft king should have done here and
16:47draft king saying you know you don't have a license on just the words march back
16:51gotcha some of that usually happens every year with the super bowl as well oh i said super bowl
16:56anyway hope so sam i hope you have a great weekend enjoy the basketball games for sure
17:01and we'll check back in with you next week here on newswire thanks again yeah correct thanks a lot
