00:00Let's bring over the rankings because Humberto is beyond excitement to see the U at the top of the AP
00:07Top 25.
00:08So here's the thing about college football this year. Parody, parody, parody.
00:12Usually you have the marquee programs.
00:14Yes.
00:15Many years are included in those marquee programs. The Alabamas, the Ohio States, the Notre Dame.
00:21And those are still doing well because of the NIL, but you have a lot of one-loss teams in
00:25the top 10.
00:25In fact, the past few weeks, the number one team has lost. Hopefully that doesn't happen next week when UM
00:31takes on Pittsburgh.
00:32But the University of Miami squeaked out an overtime win over Florida State.
00:36Well, four, I think four to five of the rest of the top 10 lost last week, including Georgia.
00:41Texas lost again. Ohio State got a win over Indiana, but they had lost earlier in the year.
00:47Notre Dame lost to BYU. Brigham Young University, the Mormons, the Storm and Mormons from Utah, are number two.
00:54Now, this is going to set up a marquee matchup in a couple of weeks that we'll talk about in
00:58a couple of weeks between Miami and Notre Dame.
01:00One of the big ones of the season.
01:01And that used to be, so back in the 80s, that used to be called the Catholics versus the convicts.
01:07Okay, that was the name of the rivalry.
01:10Now, the Catholics being Notre Dame, the convicts being University of Miami.
01:14Because, you know, University of Miami brought that swag in the 80s.
01:18There's a great documentary about the University of Miami called the U.
01:20One of the most epic mascots in all teams.
01:24Right.
01:25The Ibis.
01:26Yeah, Sebastian the Ibis.
01:27He's amazing.
01:28So, you know, it's a small private school, but they have a lot of boosters.
01:32And they're actually one of the biggest spenders in the NIL.
01:35Now, you've mentioned this before, that one of the things that you really appreciate about the U is how much
01:41they support local talent.
01:42A hundred percent.
01:43So, even though it's a private school and you've got a lot of Northeastern, you've got a lot of rich
01:46Northeastern kids that come down that didn't get into the Ivy League.
01:49They come to the University of Miami.
01:50But their sports teams are very local.
01:52So, one of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of the Miami Dolphins, aside from the fact that they
01:56haven't delivered, you know, in terms of championships during my lifetime.
01:59And the University of Miami has five and going national championships, is that half the team is always local kids.
02:06So, I'm cheering kids from my high school.
02:08I'm cheering kids from the high schools that I played against.
02:11Local Miami kids, local Miami flavor.
02:13And Miami really gets behind the Miami Hurricanes when they're winning.
02:16When they're not winning, half the stadium is empty because there's a lot of things to do.
02:19But right now, it's popping.
02:20Right now, it's popping.
02:21They had a set-out game during a monsoon rainstorm against Florida State the other week.
02:25They're looking good.
02:26So, I feel they have one of the most complete teams.
02:28They have a quarterback.
02:29Now, let me ask you, because this is one of the things that most people that are not, you know,
02:35week-in, week-out fans of college football do not understand.
02:38Explain to me what is the difference between conference play and non-conference play.
02:43I know these teams play a lot of games.
02:44Right.
02:45But it seems like only a few of those games count into their play of participation.
02:50So, there's many conferences in Division I, or they call it the FBS, the Football Bowl Division Championship.
02:57The Football Bowl Division Subdivision.
02:59I'm getting it wrong.
03:00But basically, the top Division I teams, they have many conferences, but there's a power four.
03:05So, there's the SEC, the ACC that the U.M. is in, the Big Ten, and the Big 12.
03:11The winners of those four conferences get automatic bids into the college playoffs.
03:15Oh, okay.
03:16You also have the highest-ranked champion of the other conferences that also get in.
03:22So, the conference is kind of like, it's...
03:25It's like if you, I'm guessing that, like, in soccer, if you were playing a tournament with different groups, conference
03:32play is the game that you play against your own group.
03:34100%.
03:34So, you have the conference record, and you want that conference record to be well because you want to win
03:38the conference.
03:39You want to get that automatic bid.
03:40But then, when you play against non-conference opponents, it still works to your general record, and it still contributes
03:46to your general ranking.
03:47So, a lot of times, what the big teams do is that they'll set up a big game with a
03:51non-conference opponent so that they can get the higher ranking.
03:54And sometimes, they throw in a couple of the lesser division games that are non-conference.
03:59Do teams choose who they're going to play?
04:01Yeah, of course.
04:01They negotiate, and these schedules are put together many years in advance.
04:05Now, what's happening now is the formation of super conferences.
04:08There used to actually be a Power 5, now there's Power 4.
04:11The Pac-12 used to exist.
04:12There used to be a Power 5.
04:13It's actually been reconsolidated.
04:15Yeah, exactly.
04:17It's a big thing right now.
04:18100%.
04:18The whole transformation of Pac-10.
04:20So, the Pac-12 used to have Oregon, UCLA, USC.
04:24Those teams are now in the Big 10.
04:25Okay.
04:26And the Big 10 is not 10 teams anymore.
04:28The Big 10 is like 20 teams.
04:30And the SEC is another one.
04:31These major conferences, they also have TV rights.
04:34So, they negotiate their TV rights, where MLB teams get to keep their own individual TV rights revenue.
04:40With college football, the conference splits the revenue.
04:44So, the lesser teams kind of piggyback on the major teams.
04:48There's one independent team that's not part of any conference.
04:50That's Notre Dame.
04:51Why?
04:51They're the one college team that's big enough to have their own TV rights deal with NBC.
04:56There you go.
04:56So, they don't want to be part of a conference.
04:57They don't want to be part of a conference.
