Dangerous flash flooding is already underway on Oct. 22, following a day of damaging hail and potential tornadoes in Arizona.
Transcript
00:00Extreme meteorologist Dr. Reed Timmer has been out chasing these storms. He has more from Arizona.
00:06Supercells are erupting all around the Show Low, Arizona area.
00:10You can see this one right over town that just developed.
00:13It has a pretty dense rain core and a crisp updraft base as well.
00:17Other supercells are developing further south over the White Mountains.
00:20And a new mesoscale discussion has just been issued mentioning tornado threat increasing over the next couple of hours
00:26across central and eastern Arizona, possibly into western New Mexico as well.
00:31Tornado watch is in effect. These storms are developing in a strongly sheared environment with a lot of instability as
00:37well.
00:37The classic dry over moist profile with a mid-level dry slot ahead of that vigorous upper level trough over
00:44spreading deep moisture.
00:45We've got dew points in the 60s across the low desert, mid and upper 50s further north.
00:50And that includes near the I-40 corridor and up into northwestern New Mexico, northeastern Arizona as well.
00:57But we are monitoring these supercell storms that are erupting in an unstable environment and one that's favorable for tornadoes.
01:04We are going to track the most dominant storm.
01:06You can hear some thunder back behind me as this thing continues to intensify.
01:15Always appreciate the latest there from Dr. Reid Timmer.
01:18Let's add some more context here and zoom out, kind of look at the big picture a little bit more.
01:22I want to go through the storm reports and we certainly had plenty of flooding storm reports yesterday, especially around
01:28L.A.
01:28And I told you about or have been telling you about the water rescue earlier this morning in the L
01:34.A. area.
01:35A couple people had to be rescued by officials there.
01:39So just because there's no storm report doesn't mean there's nothing going on.
01:42But let's take you through some of these other flooding storm reports because some of these are pretty concerning here.
01:48For example, we get into Hurricane Utah, which I am not going to lie.
01:54I did not know Hurricane Utah existed here.
01:56But police had to issue evacuation orders for residences because gold wash is running out of its banks.
02:04From what I can see from my kind of quick research here, because I'm like I said, not going to
02:07lie, I'm not super familiar with this part of Utah.
02:10This this waterway tends to be dry, so doesn't even have river gauges that I can show you a gauge
02:17forecast.
02:18So the fact that it's going from dried out of its banks, definitely a scary and life threatening situation, which
02:23is why we had those evacuations.
02:25Now, this was earlier this morning.
02:27This was just before 10 a.m.
02:28Mountain time.
02:29Let's go a little further east.
02:30We have high flows and flooding with a creek here.
02:348 a.m.
02:34Further north.
02:35We're talking about a river gauge.
02:38The water level remaining elevated.
02:411025 a little further north.
02:43Similar situation.
02:44So we've obviously escalated beyond just flooded roadways, and now we're at the point of streams and creeks out of
02:51their banks, which just elevates the threat and makes this even more life threatening,
02:56especially considering where some of these are when there's residences nearby that need to be evacuated.
03:01We go further east.
03:02We have flooding recorded by dispatch.
03:05We go into New Mexico.
03:07Just one lone flash flood report for now.
03:09Flowing water of unknown depth over a highway.
03:11This was earlier this morning, 720.
03:13I want to continue with the theme of the flooding storm reports and go to California.
03:19Then we'll get into more of the other severe weather.
03:22So around Bakersfield, this is just talking about some flooding.
03:26This is more water over roadways situation, which is still not a good situation, but it's not the same level
03:33of severity as some of these other reports that I've been taking you through.
03:36We do have some hail and even a funnel cloud report.
03:39So let's see if we can take a look at the funnel cloud first.
03:42This was from 930 this morning into Yavapay County, Arizona here.
03:48Just a funnel cloud reported west of Sedona.
03:50So we'll continue to keep an eye on storm surveys and things like that if we get any confirmed tornadoes
03:56from the last couple of days here.
03:58Hail about one and a half inch hail.
04:00This is around actually in the same county.
04:02We go further north and we get one inch hail.
04:05So about in line with what we're expecting here overall.
04:09I want to transition from radar to what's going on at this point.
04:13We do have a couple of watches that are in effect.
04:16Now we're going to see that severe thunderstorm watch disappear off of this map pretty soon here.
04:21But tornado watch that remains in effect until 8 or 9 p.m.
04:25depending on what county you're in.
04:27And if you observe standard time, you stay in standard time or go to a delay saving time and all
04:34of that jazz.
04:35Now also just looking at radar, you can see the warnings popping up.
04:40You might notice that when we zoomed in on radar as well, but flash flooding, severe thunderstorms,
04:44even some tornado warnings that we've been watching over the last couple of hours.
04:48That threat is going to persist as we go through the day.
04:51And I mean, take a look at the amount of rain that we've seen so far.
04:53This is why we're talking about the flash flood issues.
04:55When you've had more than an inch of rain in Flagstaff, close to an inch and a quarter,
04:59and then we're adding rain on top of it, there's just nowhere for it to go.
05:02The ground is so saturated.
05:04And some of the rainfall rates concerning as well.
05:06South of Flagstaff in the last three hours, we've had more than half an inch.
05:10It was a little bit more elevated when I looked at this earlier.
05:13But seeing some downpours is the point.
05:15That's why I'm showing you that.
05:16So looking at the storm ports in the last 24 hours,
05:18what I was showing you on radar was just from today.
05:21This adds in more context of what we saw yesterday as well.
05:23There are some of those reports in Southern California that I was talking about.
05:27Many more flash flood reports.
05:29Again, because the ground is so saturated, we're adding more rainfall to it.
05:33Taking a look at the rest of the evening, here are the areas we're concerned about,
05:36especially in that level two out of four moderate risk area.
05:39Eastern Arizona, Western New Mexico there, the most numerous severe storms expected.
05:44But for everybody highlighted here, including Southern California,
05:48all types of severe weather are possible for the rest of this evening.
05:52So you want to make sure you're staying weather aware.
05:54Have your alerts turned on as we head into tomorrow, Arizona.
05:57I know it looks like you're out of the clear, but not quite.
