00:00Now it's The Sit Down with Connie Britton and Sam Nivola.
00:03Hi, YouTube!
00:04Your new show is about a young man who wakes up in the hospital
00:07after a car accident with a seemingly imposter mom.
00:10New Fear Unlocked.
00:12The characters you both play are juicy and dynamic.
00:15How do you prepare for a role like this?
00:17The way I prepared for it was I definitely did more prep than I ever have before.
00:21This felt like I really need to, like, figure out who this guy is.
00:26I just want everything to be like it used to me.
00:28So I worked with my acting coach a lot.
00:31I talked to Connie a lot, which was insanely helpful.
00:34Like, I just really approached it like this is my first time doing something this big.
00:38And, like, I want to learn from everyone I'm working with.
00:40And I think that that was really helpful.
00:43Now that you're standing so close to the door, I can literally see your toes.
00:47Did being a mom to a teen son in real life help at all, Connie?
00:51Yes, it did.
00:52I was thinking this is such an amazing metaphor for what happens between a parent and their child during the
01:03teenage years.
01:04Because, of course, it's a teenager's job to, like, separate.
01:08But it's so painful and the way that teenagers go about it is so hard.
01:13And I'm experiencing my version of that.
01:16And so I really loved that this show kind of looks at that head on, but in such a creative
01:24way.
01:25You think that your mom has been swapped out with a different woman?
01:30Sam, how hard is it to not fangirl over Connie on set?
01:33It honestly was.
01:35I mean, she's such a legend.
01:37It's, like, it's easy to get jaded when you're an actor and you work with lots of cool people and
01:42you have to kind of keep your s*** together.
01:43But, like, she's amazing and just, like, even more so than being a celebrity that I'm a fan of.
01:50Like, she's such a dedicated worker and talent as an actress and is awesome and rocks at it and does
01:59it really graciously and without sort of demanding that someone pick the red M&Ms out of her M&M
02:05bowl, you know?
02:06I mean, I did demand it.
02:07He did do that one time.
02:08It was only one time.
02:09And it was totally fair because the red ones suck.
02:12And that's the red ones.
02:13Sam, what is one giveaway that your real-life mom, Emily Mortimer, could do that would make you s*** she's
02:19an imposter?
02:20Okay, well, my mom famously cannot stay up past, like, 8 p.m.
02:25So I would say if I'm watching a movie with my mom and the clock strikes 8.01 and her
02:32eyes are open, that is not my mom.
02:34That's an imposter.
02:35I thought we'd never see you again.
02:37Connie, what do you think the secret is to such a rich and long-lasting career?
02:41I really think about what we get to do in a way as service.
02:47Like, we get to tell stories and we get to reflect people back to themselves.
02:51And I think no matter what role I'm playing, I'm always very conscious of being as authentic and honest as
03:00possible.
03:01Because I think people really appreciate that.
03:04People don't want to be lied to, despite what current circumstances might be.
03:08Yeah.
03:08People don't want to be lied to.
03:10And I really try to be in every role that I play as authentic and honest in that role as
03:18possible.
03:18And I think audiences really, really appreciate that.
03:22Alrighty.
03:23In 10 seconds, tell everyone why they should watch Phony streaming on Hulu.
03:27Watch Phony because I don't know that it's like anything else you've ever seen before.
03:33It's gonna take you along for the ride.
03:35I know that I'm your mother.
03:38Connie, Sam, thank you so much for being here today.
03:41Aw, you're so sweet.
03:42Bye.
03:42Bye.
03:42Bye.
