00:00Jalen Brown led the way with 35 points for Boston LaMelo Ball was having a great year 36 points in
00:07a losing effort but Boston held Charlotte to 102 last night Joe Mazzulla talked about the defense after the game
00:14honestly I think our defense kept us in the entire game I mean I think it's another one of those
00:18games where anytime you're you know I feel like the easy thing when you're losing or not playing well it's
00:23like oh it's the defense you know you take a look up and you know balls got whatever he's got
00:26but in reality I thought our offense let us down the entire first half and
00:29our defense kept it in it close and you know you get to halftime you're like oh it's a six
00:33point game you know we're not playing the way we need to on the offensive end and you know here's
00:3710 points that we can get better at defensively you take that away we're winning so I thought our defense
00:42kept us in you know in the entire game I thought we took it to a different level and then
00:45I thought connecting a better offense there made us even better there throughout the second half.
00:50What do you like about the team how they competed tonight?
00:52Yeah I love I think the focus that we had the defensive intensity that we had early on in that
00:57game helped us build a lead I thought the unselfishness offensively and the pace and execution was like great for
01:05most of the game credit our guys they came on the road in a hostile environment versus a really good
01:11physical team and I thought they competed to the to the final buzzer which is great put us in a
01:16position to win a game
01:17I felt like our third quarter into the third quarter you know missing that dunk after great defensive possession allowed
01:25them to get a little bit of momentum with an offensive rebound some unders versus their three-point shooters and
01:31it bled into the fourth quarter a little bit so some things to definitely take from tonight but a ton
01:36of really good things.
01:38All right good things also for the Toronto Raptors last night they beat the Miami Heat 121 to 95 is
01:45Toronto feeling good heading toward the playoffs the Miami Heat not as much Miami definitely slated for one of the
01:51play in games again coming up next week is the NBA playoffs begin.
01:55Scotty Barnes had 25 points and 8 rebounds but the story really more or less has been the struggles of
02:02the Miami Heat all season long here's Norman Powell about closing out the season strong what happened that this sort
02:10of is turned off there was a point in the season when it was looking so good now by Thursday
02:14you could be locked into number 10.
02:16Yeah honestly I don't got the answers I don't got the answers but we gotta we gotta gotta come up
02:23with something in between now and Thursday if we want to try to continue to move up or get to
02:29a little better positioning in this plan so that's really all that matters finding out what the answers are I
02:35don't got them right now gotta go back watch watch my clip see how I can be better watch the
02:40game back
02:41and then when we have our team meeting be able to be able to have some positive input on how
02:47we can correct this stuff.
02:50And we'll have full coverage of the NBA's play in games next week here on Newswire meanwhile the Houston Rockets
02:56will not be a part of that looks like they're locked in almost to the five seed but you know
03:00things can change in the end Houston beats Phoenix 119 to 105 they win in cover as one and a
03:05half point favorites KD had 24 points yesterday and a nice confidence
03:10win says Kevin Durant who are currently the five seed in the west how does that help you heading into
03:15the playoffs I mean it's cool for today like when we prepare for the playoffs we're not we're not gonna
03:22talk about this game we're not gonna worry about this game just the style of play and the continuity from
03:26where we've been going the last six couple last week or so it's cool but we can't hang our hats
03:32on these games we just gotta keep building our habits and once the next season starts with just the playoffs
03:37we get rid of all of the stuff that we went through and focus
03:40and focus on our opponents so yeah it's good momentum to have as we finish the season but once it's
03:47over with we just move on.
03:49All right meanwhile last night the Los Angeles Lakers playing without Austin Reeves Luka Doncic and LeBron James so what
03:55do you think happened when they played Oklahoma City you'd be right they got blown out 123 to 87 Shea
04:01Gilgis Alexander with 25 points also the Clippers had Kawhi Leonard available last night and they beat the Mavericks 116
04:09to 106 Cooper flag by the way in a losing effort had 25 points and nine rebounds.
04:15All right let's get to some major league baseball action the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays four to one Dodgers
04:22is road favorite Shohei Otani went one for three John Schneider yesterday after the game very disappointed in the offensive
04:29performance of his Jays.
04:32Not anxiety I think it's I think patience comes into it you know what you're swinging at comes into it
04:39and then not being afraid to just take a walk at times that's all part of it so again it's
04:46a it's a tricky thing and pitchers are good you know whether it's starter reliever pitchers are good you have
04:53to be convicted in what you're trying to do in every situation whether it's bases loaded
04:59nobody out or first and third one out whatever it may be it's kind of just do your job and
05:04move it on to the next guy that's what we were really good at last year it's what we you
05:09know are striving to continue to do and it's just not happening right now.
05:14Jay's off to a slow start they'll see Shohei Otani on the mound today at 4 p.m. Eastern meanwhile
05:20the pitchers duel did come to fruition yesterday as the Red Sox defeated the Brewers 3 to 2 Garrett Crochet
05:26outduels Jacob Mizorowski as Trevor Story went one for four Boston only got three hits and ended up winning this
05:33game here's Garrett Crochet not just on his start but also saying that the Miz did well too.
05:38uh kind of always looking for a little bit of an edge um wherever you can get it um I
05:45think that definitely felt like we needed to stop the bleeding um and uh you know we got a that's
05:52a really good kid on the other side um you know we we made him throw strikes and uh and
05:58we capitalized there in that inning um but clearly the stuff's incredible um so you know we were grinding all
06:04night just for base runners period uh I mean Wilson got
06:06the first hit and what the fourth inning was it um so a night like tonight you know who's on
06:13the other side you kind of know that you got to be on your A game um that's really all.
06:18Much needed win for the San Francisco Giants yesterday a lot of criticism coming down on them early on in
06:23the year they beat the Phillies 6 to nothing.
06:25Pirates defeated the Reds 7 to 1.
06:28Paul Skeens took a no hitter into the sixth he picks up the win and uh Terry Scooble the uh
06:33of course Cy Young Award winner in the American League took the L yesterday against the Minnesota Twins.
06:38Twins win 4-2-2.
06:40All right welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
06:42Great to have Sam McQuillan in the house from Legal Sports Report as we get ready to hit the NBA
06:47playoff scene.
06:48I'm sure Sam and I will be discussing some betting options and folks had a lot of options during the
06:53NCAA tournament more than ever with these prediction markets and Sam it does appear the prediction markets ended up doing
07:00okay here and maybe because of the fact that they offered a better VIG potentially than some of the other
07:08sports betting options that does make a ton of sense.
07:13Yeah it's been really interesting to see these numbers roll in off March Madness first with prediction markets like Kalshi
07:19reporting just the sheer total volume they took on the tournament Kalshi took about 1.8 billion dollars on March
07:26Madness which you know includes it includes season-long futures bets as well so you know that's placed before the
07:32tournament but if you look at that 1.8 billion figure that's about three times what it took on the
07:37U.S. presidential election a few years ago.
07:40Which is its most traded market and about the same as the total platform volume it took in all of
07:472024 so a ton of trading activity on Kalshi I'll note though that the trading volume that these prediction markets
07:54report is not entirely the same as the handle that a sports books report because you know the handle is
08:02pure total dollars wagered while the trading volume is more a contract that can be traded multiple times so we're
08:09still kind of trying to figure out
08:10How exactly this all matches up to the sports book stuff but citizens had a really interesting note about the
08:17pricing which you mentioned Craig specifically on game winner markets or money line markets and game total markets you know
08:23over under on how much points is scored in one game.
08:26It found that Kalshi had the best pricing on those markets in about 47 out of 67 total tournament games
08:33compared to sports books like DraftKings which I think only had the best pricing on about 5 or 17 rather
08:39and FanDuel only had the best pricing on about 5 so Kalshi beating the sports books on prices on you
08:45know really active games this time of year but really important to note too that that's not player props that's
08:51not spreads or the other markets that are really popular on sports books.
08:55You know I think these markets are only about I would say maybe 20% of total activity on sports
09:02books and we've really seen nothing so far in the seven and a half years of legal sports betting to
09:07suggest really that customers actually care about these pricing pricing differentials.
09:12I think for Kalshi it would mean you know if you bet $100 you maybe save $7 on a bet
09:17versus DraftKings or FanDuel and as you know very well Craig customers don't really care about that.
09:22They kind of only care about same game parlays and long shot bets which are at least the majority of
09:28customers that are on these sports books and the ones that these want to hold on to.
09:32So it'll be really interesting to see how you know Kalshi moves forward with this kind of activity especially as
09:37we round over into football season.
09:39You know they're obviously trying to trying to develop their same game parlay product as well but some interesting stats
09:46so far from March Madness.
09:48Definitely so football season though Sam got to wait a few months feels like we're still far away from football
09:54season but I digress I'm heavy into baseball.
09:57All right the CFTC initiating some action against some of the states that don't want the prediction markets operating there
10:05and so we're getting some landmark movement here in legislature you can read all about this over at legalsportsreport.com
10:12but Sam if this ends up coming to fruition this is a very big win for the prediction markets if
10:21they reverse some of these dealings by the states.
10:26Yeah so far in this kind of prediction markets versus sports books versus states whole legal battle which spans almost
10:3320 cases.
10:34It's really been Kalshi and Polymarket versus the state gaming regulators but yet for the first time just late last
10:41week the CFTC which is the federal agency that says it's supposed to be the one regulating sports prediction markets.
10:49They came out and they sued Arizona, Connecticut and Illinois which are notably just three of the many states that
10:55are suing Kalshi and Polymarket to stop them from operating CFTC basically trying to assert its exclusive federal jurisdiction over
11:04these markets.
11:04It's arguing that these are federally regulated derivatives while the states are arguing that those are actually just sports betting
11:12products indistinguishable from you know what their laws say they can offer they have to pay taxes they have to
11:17follow their rules etc.
11:18So it's notable that this is really the first time we've seen a federal agency get involved in a case
11:24like this it's really only been companies versus the states.
11:26The CFTC is now kind of trying to defend its jurisdiction going forward certainly you know we have no idea
11:33how this is all going to end up with the myriad of cases.
11:36We just had New Jersey ruling in favor of Kalshi in a two to one split decision basically allowing the
11:42product to keep existing in New Jersey while these court cases unfold states have largely won most of the other
11:50cases about 14 out of 16 at least in the initial early rulings part where basically a state is trying
11:56to stop them from currently operating while the cases play out.
11:59So that's a long way of saying this will all probably be decided by the Supreme Court eventually maybe in
12:04a year maybe in two years but now that the CFTC is you know going on the aggressive launching its
12:09own lawsuits it kind of changes the dynamic a little bit and really shows that they're aligning themselves with these
12:15sports prediction markets and also note too it's pretty interesting to note that these three states out of the you
12:20know 17 or 20 suing all Democratic governors and all states have taken action against these prediction markets.
12:27Obviously the new regime in the White House has been very pro prediction markets opposite of kind of the previous
12:33regime so probably a lot more legal fees and lawyers on the way but we'll keep monitoring it.
12:40Sam let's end with this Louisiana considering banning prop bets and then they took a look at the amount of
12:45money that they made as a state and said wait a second here maybe we're not doing as well as
12:51we are it's kind of a sad state of affairs if that's really the case here with this but Louisiana
12:56for the time being is going to allow prop bets to continue I hate that it's all about money but
13:01Sam isn't everything all about money.
13:05Of course especially in sports betting and especially in state laws Greg you have a the the senator from Louisiana
13:11Katrina Jackson Andrews filed a bill to ban prop bets to ban player props to ban micro bets specifically.
13:17You know worrying that these kind of bets are frankly you know lower margin for most average Americans and a
13:25you know give way to same game parlays and basically lose people a lot of money and get people addicted
13:29to gambling but she withdrew this bill as soon as a fiscal note was produced that said the state would
13:34have lost about 30 million dollars in tax revenue annually if it banned these markets.
13:39And that's because they're pretty much the sports books and that's because they're pretty much the most popular thing that
13:42sports books have without them sports books would lose maybe 50% of the annual revenue so obviously trickles down
13:49to the states.
13:50You mentioned it's kind of unfortunate to see it's all about money but that's kind of what she came out
13:54and said this week when she said you know I didn't really consider the financial repercussions but I'm not done
13:59with proposing some legislation regulating the space.
14:04Notably what wasn't mentioned is something we've talked about a bunch too is the integrity issues in sports you know
14:10Major League Baseball changed their micro betting rules a bit after the Cleveland Guardians investigations came to light.
14:16There's been a lot of talk about banning prop bets outright in other sports college sports specifically that can allow
14:23people to manipulate these outcomes to kind of you know rig money and you know win for some illicit betting
14:29ring or something like that.
14:30So that wasn't brought up here but I think it's important to note in the larger conversation of overall prop
14:35betting reform but the first thing I think first and foremost is it would wipe out about half of the
14:40money that sports books make and obviously in turn a lot of the taxes that the states make.
14:44So we'll see what she comes up with next year but for now prop betting still alive in Louisiana and
14:49I imagine a lot of other states will kind of look to this as well as hey maybe we shouldn't
14:52you know go out with an all right ban quite yet.
14:55And kind of you know take our time and propose something more more pointed and specific that can really tackle
15:00the problem.
15:01Yeah I mean at this point any any state that loses money is not going to be proposing ways to
15:06lose more money and that's what prop bets do is they make money for the sports books.
15:11All right Sam it is great to catch up with you here on Newswire and we'll see you again Friday
15:16as we get ready to close out the week appreciate you coming on and again read all of Sam's work
15:21over at LegalSportsReport.com thanks for the time Sam.
