00:00Right back out on prediction markets edge on the early line is a Friday,
00:03a festive Friday at that Donnie right side, Joe Renier.
00:06Let's welcome it Tom Vecchio.
00:07The hockey playoffs are just about to begin.
00:11Love this time of year, Tommy.
00:12How we feeling?
00:16Yeah.
00:24Somewhat straightforward for at least one team,
00:26but the West is a complete toss up.
00:28And I think we're going to see some upsets this year.
00:31Absolutely.
00:32And also if we remember ourselves,
00:34wait, that's probably 15 years ago.
00:36Flyers last day of the season,
00:37getting it on a shootout over the Rangers,
00:38propelled themselves into the Stanley cup with Pronger and the boys.
00:42I'm not saying the Flyers can do that,
00:43but Hey, we can all wish Tom,
00:45let's get down to some of these series,
00:46which should be close and a lot of fun to watch.
00:49Love playoff hockey,
00:50the Ottawa senators and the Carolina hurricanes.
00:53Tom, if I'm looking on the couch,
00:54your marketplace right now,
00:55Carolina as a slight favorite to win this series at six,
00:5862% underdog Ottawa at 38%.
01:02Looking at the senators in the hurricane series,
01:04how do we think this plays out?
01:06You know, really,
01:07I think the hurricanes are the better team by leaps and bounds.
01:11Essentially.
01:11I really think they're the better team compared to Ottawa.
01:13Now listen, Ottawa started off the year really slow.
01:17They struggled through the mid portion and they turned things on as of late
01:19in order to secure their spot.
01:21You know, frankly,
01:22I see the Canes winning the series forwarded to that's kind of where I'm
01:25leaning.
01:25I don't think it's going to be easy in those winning games for the Canes,
01:29but they are the better team.
01:30And frankly, if they can get past this round,
01:32they can get past that next round versus the penguins,
01:35the flyers.
01:35They have the easiest and cleanest path to get to the conference finals and
01:39have any team on any side of the bracket.
01:43Feels like Ottawa is the one side there that you're picking a long shot.
01:49That's the long shot right there.
01:51Right.
01:52Ottawa,
01:52because it has the goal situation with the goaltender situation in Carolina
01:56changed that all.
01:57Have we,
01:57are we expecting anything different here?
02:00I mean,
02:00Ottawa has got a puncher's chance here,
02:02don't they?
02:03They do.
02:04Peter Kachekov was activated from long-term IR on the last game of the
02:08season from,
02:09and he wasn't able to play,
02:10but he is eligible for the post season.
02:11So,
02:12you know,
02:12he is a solid goaltender.
02:13I've always said about the Canes,
02:15because they've had their issues when Freddie Anderson was in there in the
02:17past few years,
02:18the defense and the system in front of the goalie is fantastic.
02:21What Rod Brynmore has done is why they've had so much success.
02:24The goalie themselves with Freddie Anderson,
02:26having his individual struggles,
02:28that has always kind of been the nice edge for the Canes,
02:31whether they succeed or whether they fail.
02:33So if Ottawa can get goals early,
02:36that's when they have the chance.
02:37Like I don't think Ottawa wins games two to one,
02:40one,
02:40nothing.
02:41They're going to have to score to keep up with the Canes,
02:43but they do have a shot to take some games away.
02:46Great stuff here,
02:46Tommy talking about that series and the Keystone state is going to be on fire
02:50this weekend,
02:51starting Saturday night at 8 PM.
02:52The hatred is back.
02:54It's the Philadelphia Flyers in the playoffs to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.
02:58And if you,
02:59any of those shenanigans from the past Flyers fans don't like Pittsburgh fans,
03:03Pittsburgh fans don't like Flyers fans.
03:05And so we go on Calcio in the marketplace and no surprise,
03:08the Penguins are a favorite,
03:09but only around 56%.
03:10However,
03:11the opening of the marketplace here,
03:13Tom started around 51%,
03:1549.
03:15So it's widened a little bit in Pittsburgh's favorite here,
03:18Penguins and the Flyers.
03:20It's been a minute since the Flyers been back in the playoffs,
03:22but here we are,
03:23Tom,
03:23what are we thinking?
03:24You know,
03:24frankly,
03:24I think the series is a complete toss up,
03:26you know,
03:26between this series,
03:27between Dallas and Minnesota,
03:28I think these series are complete toss ups,
03:30you know,
03:30looking at this on a game by game basis,
03:32I would say just give me the dog in every game because I don't know what's
03:34going to happen coming into the season.
03:36I was very low on the Penguins.
03:38I just didn't think they had enough depth.
03:39I think their goaltending is average,
03:41but when the top end talent with Crosby and Malkin,
03:43you know,
03:44get going,
03:44they can carry that team to a lot of victories to paint the Flyers on the
03:48other side.
03:49It really has to be that young talent.
03:50You know,
03:51Zegers has been absolutely awesome.
03:52Seeing Sean Couturier back in there at top form has been fantastic.
03:55It has to be a system win for the Flyers.
03:58And it's gonna have to be the top end win for the Penguins.
04:01Vladar Joe,
04:02come on.
04:02Talk about Vladar at this point.
04:05Best foley in the NHL.
04:07Come on.
04:08One and done.
04:09Is that what we think here?
04:10Is it one and done for a one series and done for both of these days?
04:15Well,
04:15I'm not bitter at all here,
04:17but listen,
04:18if you want to look at a big picture here,
04:20because I think everyone understands out West,
04:23it's we know it's going to be,
04:25well,
04:25let's just pencil Colorado.
04:27But if you had to take a guess here,
04:29Tom,
04:30who would they be playing?
04:31What is the final setup going to look like here?
04:34Who's coming out of the West?
04:35Who's coming out of the East?
04:36You know,
04:37like I said,
04:37I think Carolina has a very easy path to get to the conference finals.
04:41I still believe Tampa is the strongest team overall when it comes to the
04:44Eastern conference.
04:45And when it comes to the West,
04:47you know,
04:47everyone's going to be looking at Edmonton.
04:48Oh,
04:49they've been a two straight Stanley Cup finals.
04:51Listen,
04:51the ducks are good.
04:52And I think the ducks have a legitimate chance to win this series.
04:55And I'm not,
04:55if Edmonton ends up winning,
04:57it's going to be four,
04:58two or four,
04:58three.
04:58I'm not going to be shocked if they end up winning,
05:00but people shouldn't be writing off the ducks just because the Oilers have
05:03been there two straight seasons.
05:05Colorado has,
05:06I'm going to say one of the easier matchups in round one,
05:08but man,
05:09getting past Dallas or Minnesota is going to be very tough.
05:12Frankly,
05:13I think it could come down to Colorado versus Vegas,
05:15which would be absolutely fantastic.
05:17That's where we come down to things.
05:19I think Vegas with their coaching change late season,
05:21they will get past Edmonton because the goalie issues for Edmonton are too
05:25much.
05:25I think we're going to see a rematch of what we saw a couple of years ago
05:27between Colorado and Tampa.
05:30Tom,
05:31taking a look here in the Eastern conference and getting to the conference
05:33finals.
05:33There's so many marketplaces that you can take a look at.
05:35I'm looking at poly market right now.
05:37And so much throughout the season,
05:38we've been excited to watch what the Buffalo Sabres were able to do.
05:42But as we know,
05:43regular season transferring the post-season success,
05:45just a little bit different.
05:46Currently on poly market,
05:47a 60% contract to the yes pays back $164 off a hundred dollar investment.
05:53What are the thoughts between the Sabres and what they can do in the
05:56playoffs,
05:57particularly even making it to the conference finals?
06:00I'll put it like this.
06:01If the Sabres were to lose in round one,
06:04I'm not going to be shocked at all.
06:05And,
06:06you know,
06:06I keep having the thoughts.
06:08It's like,
06:08wow,
06:09they had a great season and then they kind of just fall fat,
06:12fall flat in the playoffs.
06:13And that wouldn't entirely shock me just because they haven't been there.
06:17Boston's at least proven in some capacity,
06:19you know,
06:19they've had some,
06:20you know,
06:20playoff struggles over the last few years,
06:21but if they win one round,
06:23they're not getting past Tampa.
06:24That's what it comes down to.
06:25Like the great season,
06:27great storyline from the finally great,
06:28this 15 year drought,
06:29but they're not getting past Tampa and they're not getting past the
06:32hurricanes.
06:32So when one round,
06:34sure.
06:34More than that.
06:35I can't buy that.
06:38It just sounds like we're talking very chalkiness here when it's all said
06:42and done.
06:43I think we'll have to set a series,
06:44but it may end up chalky.
06:47Yeah.
06:47So then any sort of combination in the predictive markets involving
06:52Minnesota or Dallas,
06:54we should just push the decide.
06:57I could see Dallas getting there.
06:59The issue for them would be how much can they withstand at least the first
07:03few games of the series.
07:04They are going to be without rope.
07:05A hints,
07:06one of their top players.
07:07So if they lose or they split the first two games,
07:10then they obviously lose home on ice advantage.
07:12They have to go back to Minnesota.
07:14Minnesota obviously has a lot of top end talent and really the,
07:16the scoring struggles that Dallas has had,
07:18especially late season.
07:20If they can't get the goals going and Minnesota gets out in front,
07:23I don't think Dallas has a chance,
07:25no matter how good their defense is.
07:27If they can't get the offense going,
07:28which has really struggled the second half of the season,
07:31they just won't have enough.
07:33Tom.
07:33Well,
07:33my flyers have stunk the past couple of years.
07:35We're now back in the playoffs.
07:36So excitement.
07:37I'm going to be watching,
07:37but the team I always used to root for here in place was the Edmonton
07:40Oilers.
07:41Talk to me on the chance,
07:42maybe dry site.
07:43Is he coming back?
07:44Cause if he does,
07:44that could be a fun team to watch here.
07:46He is.
07:47As long as he stops eating popcorn in the press box,
07:49since he's been out the past few weeks,
07:50is he,
07:51if he's ready to go,
07:52they have a chance,
07:53but it's not going to be low scoring games.
07:55I mean,
07:55their defense,
07:56their goaltending is still an issue.
07:57The ducks,
07:58they can score three goals a game and they will be toe to toe,
08:01you know,
08:01punch for punch with the Oilers every step of the way.
08:04But Oilers finally winning a Stanley cup and ending Canada's drought.
08:07A hundred dollar investment will pay back $1,250.
08:10Tom,
08:10thanks for joining us here on PME on a Friday.
08:12We'll talk to you soon.
08:13We'll be right back into this short break.
