00:00Hello and welcome to Postcards.
00:03Tonight I am on Ligon Street in search of, you guessed it,
00:07Melbourne's best pizza.
00:08But before I indulge, let's see what the rest of the team are up to.
00:13Brodie's set for some seaside fun in Frankston,
00:16Madeline's in Queensland getting to know the local wildlife
00:19and Tim Campbell and Paulini join us for a tour of the CBD.
00:25Postcards, why don't you send me postcards?
00:35I feel like Frankston's having a real moment right now.
00:39With its friendly community and incredible beaches,
00:42everyone's catching on to this relaxed lifestyle that's hard to beat.
00:47Yep, the secret's out.
00:48At less than an hour from the city,
00:50Frankston provides the perfect balance many seek these days.
00:54It's the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula,
00:56so a worthy stop on a day trip south.
00:59Or there's plenty to keep you busy here all day.
01:03Common Folk on Plain Street is my favourite cafe.
01:06And I'm not alone.
01:07It was recently awarded Victoria's Best Cafe by the Good Food Guide.
01:13Casey, Best Cafe in Victoria.
01:15Massive news. Congratulations.
01:17Thank you. Yeah, crazy.
01:18We're actually still pinching ourselves, to be honest.
01:20Like, it's absolutely crazy to think that our humble neighbourhood cafe in Frankston
01:24has been awarded such high praise.
01:27And I think we're proud for us.
01:29We're proud for our team and our crew.
01:31But we're proud for the community in Frankston.
01:33Like, finally, we're getting the recognition that we deserve.
01:36People are coming down.
01:37They're travelling down.
01:38So, yeah, it's not necessarily about us.
01:39It's about Frankston.
01:40Well, we really try and focus on local ingredients and seasonal ingredients.
01:44We rotate our menu probably more frequently than what our customers like.
01:48But that's to showcase the amazing produce that we have on the peninsula.
01:52You're also a big believer in giving back.
01:54Yeah.
01:54Tell us, what's The Cup That Counts about?
01:56So, The Cup That Counts is our charity branch.
01:59When we first opened our business in 2013, our coffee roastery and cafe,
02:03we were really passionate about doing something that gives back to the community that we take from
02:08and the industry that we take from.
02:09And so, 20 cents from every coffee that we sell, every bag of coffee that we sell,
02:14goes towards building an industry that's fair for everyone involved.
02:18Farmers over in Uganda, we want to make sure that they're paid the price that they deserve,
02:22not the price that we can afford.
02:24And something that we're so proud of.
02:26The waterfront, just a few minutes away, is another big drawcard for Frankston,
02:31especially at this time of year when the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships come to town.
02:36This much-loved annual event, the only one of its kind in Australia,
02:40sees over 400 tonnes of sand transformed into a series of jaw-dropping artworks
02:45that are truly unbelievable.
02:48Tell me, what's the theme this year and what's your piece about?
02:51The theme this year is a really good one. I like it.
02:54It's called The Enchanted Realm.
02:55My piece this year is called Destiny Awaits.
02:58Children grow up, and everybody says, you know, follow your dreams, do what you love.
03:03Whereas in The Enchanted Realm, the three characters that I've done,
03:06one's a baby dragon, and one is a keeper of the forest, and one's a fairy.
03:10So their fate is, or their destiny, is predetermined.
03:13So it was just a bit of a spin on that angle.
03:15Tell us about the sculpture behind us that looks amazing.
03:18How long did it take to create?
03:20We had six days to create this one, and we started off with six sculptors.
03:24In the end, we had virtually everybody on it.
03:26So it's a representation of all the characters that are involved in the Super Mario Galaxy movie
03:31that's coming out soon.
03:32But yeah, there's 65 tonnes of sand there.
03:37Fire it all.
03:37After a few fun hours at the waterfront, you'll need a bite to eat,
03:42and thankfully, Hotel Paradiso is just five minutes away.
03:45The retro 80s Miami vibes will get you in the door,
03:49while the sensational pizzas, cocktails, and cool tunes will keep you there.
03:54This is the type of place you could really settle into for an afternoon.
03:58It's family friendly.
04:00Everybody is going to love the food.
04:02And it really has a great atmosphere.
04:05See those disco balls?
04:07Come night time, there's DJs,
04:09and this whole place turns into one big dance party.
04:13What more could you want?
04:15Head to Frankston for the ultimate family fun day out.
04:18All the details are on the screen.
04:20I'm a fireball.
04:22After the break, I'm here with this little guy, Chip the Capybara,
04:27exploring all the fun things you can get up to
04:29on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Hinterland.
04:32See you soon.
04:34Postcards.
04:40Postcards.
04:48Take one look at the coastline from Caloundra to Noosa,
04:51and it's pretty obvious where the Sunshine Coast gets its name.
04:55The pristine beaches up here are iconic,
04:58but how about this gorgeous green hinterland?
05:01There's a whole different side of this region that's just as stunning.
05:05The hinterland is only a short 30-minute drive inland from the coast,
05:09so the lucky locals have the best of both worlds up here,
05:12and there is plenty to discover.
05:14One of my favourite pastimes is vintage shopping,
05:18and some of my best finds have been at regional places like this.
05:22This is the shed in Palmwoods.
05:24It's a vintage shopping experience and bistro all-in-one.
05:28My kind of heaven.
05:30This historic railway shed has been standing here for more than a century
05:34and is now a haven for upmarket hand-picked vintage furniture,
05:38collectibles and homewares.
05:40And if you fancy a bite to eat or a cup of tea mid-browse,
05:44the on-site bistro is full of character,
05:46and they've got some delicious morning tea options on offer today,
05:50like this carrot cake, pecan pie and blueberry-free yarn.
05:54Yum.
05:57From one historic landmark to another,
06:00just down the road in Wumbai is the famous Big Pineapple,
06:04home to Wildlife HQ.
06:05We are a boutique zoo with over 50 species.
06:10Quite a few of our animals have been moved up from the old Alma Park Zoo,
06:14and they live at Wildlife HQ now.
06:16What kind of animals have you got around?
06:18Everything from capybarras to pygmy marmosets.
06:21So they're the smallest monkey in the world,
06:23about 120, 130 grams, so very, very small.
06:26Lots of primates, quokkas, koalas.
06:30We've got everybody here.
06:31Everybody's here.
06:32So what kind of opportunities can visitors have when they come over here?
06:35Our visitors do get the opportunity to book encounters with our animals,
06:39a lot of feeding encounters as well, get up close and personal,
06:42and then they can build that connection with the animals
06:44and learn about the conservation we're doing behind the scenes.
06:46Speaking of connection, I feel like this guy wants an introduction.
06:49Who have we got here?
06:50So we've got Chip here.
06:52He's a capybara.
06:53He's only four years old.
06:55So he's only just hit around 45 kilos at the moment,
06:58so he's still got a lot of growing to do.
07:00Loves bamboo, so we're going to feed him some bamboo.
07:02Well, this is the first time that I've ever met one,
07:04so, oh, oh, he's just going to ignore us now.
07:07Well, I'm keen to meet him and give him a feed.
07:12That looks pretty tasty, don't you think?
07:14Yeah.
07:20There's a lot of beautiful places in this region to explore,
07:24and Marta Cars for Cancer is giving you the chance
07:27to win this ultimate car and caravan package
07:29that has everything you need to get out here and experience it.
07:34Great time of year to be camping and caravan around Australia,
07:36and with this latest Marta Cars for Cancer prize package,
07:39which is valued at just over $505,000,
07:42people will be able to do that, right, if you're the lucky winner.
07:44Now, this prize package has plenty of power,
07:47plenty of capability, and plenty of luxury.
07:50What's included in the prize,
07:52and what kind of person would it really suit?
07:54Great questions.
07:54Let's start with the four-wheel drive.
07:56This is the Land Cruiser GR Sport.
07:58Up front, we have a 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine,
08:02and that's going to power your next escape.
08:03With five driving modes,
08:05you can essentially drop a pin anywhere on a map of Australia and just go.
08:09You are well-equipped with plenty of accessories.
08:11For example, just to name a few,
08:12we've got the ARB Summit Bull Bar,
08:14so some good protection there,
08:15the Bushranger Winch,
08:16just to pull you out of some of those tricky situations,
08:18and up top, we've got the roof rack crossbar set
08:21and so much more.
08:23And it pairs beautifully with the custom Wild Trail Caravan.
08:27I mean, how good does it look, Matty?
08:28I mean, how good is this?
08:29This is the life, right?
08:30Now, we've got an external bush-tucker kitchen.
08:33It comes in very handy.
08:34We've got independent off-road suspension,
08:36which will help you get to those remote locations.
08:39Inside, a queen-size bed
08:41and double bunks to fit the entire family.
08:43It's spacious, it's luxurious,
08:45and it's very practical.
08:46And, Matty, let's not forget the $150,000 in gold bullion.
08:50It is a great prize package.
08:52Obviously, the prize is fantastic,
08:53but it's got a bigger heart to it.
08:55It sure has.
08:56Every time someone purchases a ticket,
08:57that money helps fuel vital cancer research.
09:00Research saves lives.
09:02Lives like Dane.
09:03Dane, a very active 42-year-old.
09:05Now, he wasn't feeling too good one day,
09:07had a few stomach issues.
09:08Turns out he was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.
09:11Now, the good news is the team at Martyr in Townsville,
09:15the doctors, through surgery,
09:16were able to remove the cancer.
09:18So, when you buy a ticket,
09:19you could potentially win this great prize
09:20and it could change your life,
09:21but you're also helping to change the lives of many others
09:24and you're helping to change the future
09:25of cancer diagnosis, treatment and care.
09:27You can learn more about the Shed and Wildlife HQ
09:30at the websites on screen.
09:32And don't miss your chance
09:33to win this incredible Martyr Cars for Cancer prize package.
09:36Buy your tickets today at carsforcancer.com.au
09:40or scan the QR code on screen.
09:42Tickets on sale until May 13 or unless sold out sooner.
09:46All TNCs are on their website.
09:49After the break, we're taking in the best of Carlton,
09:52which, of course, includes the best pizza on Ligon Street.
10:06You know how each suburb of Melbourne
10:08has its own unique personality?
10:10Well, here in Carlton, each street has its own little vibe
10:14and today we're checking out three different streets
10:17with three different styles.
10:20We're starting on Rathdowne Street.
10:22Now, technically, this is Carlton North
10:24and the vibe here is very cosy neighbourhood village,
10:28leafy streets, a slower pace
10:30and a bunch of boutique businesses inside old terrace houses.
10:33One of those is Love It Longer.
10:36Are you ready?
10:39We run a pre-love designer consignment store.
10:42It's a boutique and we sell on Instagram and on our website.
10:46And we are located in Rathdowne Village,
10:48which is kind of very European.
10:50Every room is set up with beautiful products.
10:52It's just a bit of a private way to shop.
10:55Old school retail is dying
10:56and we really want to give that one-to-one service.
10:59Everyone gets a bottle of San Pellegrino when they come in.
11:02We care about our clients
11:03and we just want it to be nice and slow.
11:06But it is open.
11:07It's open.
11:08We're open 10 till 3 every day.
11:09You're very welcome to shop,
11:11just not many people know about it,
11:12but now you know.
11:13Amazing.
11:14I wish I didn't know.
11:15This feels incredibly dangerous in here for me.
11:18It is.
11:18It is.
11:19And how does the business work?
11:20Do people bring in their pre-loved items
11:22or do you go and source them around the world?
11:24So we're very lucky
11:25because we both have a background in fashion,
11:28so we actually had quite a network of clients to begin with.
11:31We've got our really great consignors.
11:33We've got a fabulous list of women that sell with us.
11:36So we have a mix of brands,
11:38anywhere between mid-range to high-end.
11:40We've got the Camilla and Marks,
11:41the Scanlan, which do really well for us.
11:43And then we have the top-tier brands
11:44like Chanel, Balenciaga.
11:46Fendi, Prada.
11:47You name it.
11:48In Australia,
11:49we send over 200,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill.
11:53That is crazy.
11:55So shopping at a place I love it longer
11:57just really breaks that.
11:59Slows it down.
12:00We're all about giving garments a longer life.
12:03Our items are beautiful,
12:04but they're really well-priced.
12:06How long do you hold pieces for if they don't sell it?
12:08About a month.
12:08And then we ring you and say,
12:09Lauren, what do you think?
12:10Do you want to lower it?
12:11Do you want to take it back?
12:12Would you like to donate it?
12:13We donate a lot of our clothes to teachers.
12:17Things that women don't want back,
12:19we always go to the local schools around here
12:20and just give it to the teachers,
12:21and they love it.
12:22That's so...
12:22Oh, my God, all the teachers.
12:24Down to the classroom, primary school.
12:27There's so teachers in Melbourne.
12:29I'm telling you.
12:30Oh, my God.
12:34Carlton meets the CBD on Victoria Street,
12:36and there's a definite increase in both hustle and bustle
12:40down this end of the suburb.
12:42It's always packed with traffic and uni students
12:45and delicious Asian eateries.
12:46But today, I am trying somewhere a little bit different,
12:49which I'm told puts a unique spin on afternoon tea.
12:53Oxi Tea Room is up the stairs at 158 Victoria Street,
12:57and the goal is to highlight the teas of Kenya and Taiwan.
13:01Now, that might sound niche,
13:03but those are the countries that both the owners are from,
13:05so the venue is a bit of an homage to their heritage.
13:10Melbourne has no shortage of afternoon teas,
13:13and let me tell you, I have tried a few in my time on postcards.
13:16But this one here, it's a little bit different.
13:18It's a modern take, and it is so special
13:21that last year it received a chef's hat,
13:23which, for a place which specialises in dessert and tea,
13:27is pretty amazing.
13:29I've saved the most iconic Carlton Street for last.
13:33And sure, Ligon Street these days is more than just Italian food.
13:36It's a melting pot of its own.
13:38But you can still find some of Melbourne's best pasta
13:42and pizza right here,
13:44whether it's at an institution like Tiamo
13:46or a new venture like Garfield Pizzeria.
13:49Can't help it.
13:51Girl, can't help it.
13:52Girl, baby!
13:53Garfield Pizzeria,
13:54the newest addition to this iconic building.
13:57Tell me about it.
13:57Yeah, so we've been so excited
13:59to bring this product to the neighbourhood.
14:02We're a fast, casual neighbourhood place
14:04which takes its inspiration from Naples and Italy
14:07with a kind of Tokyo twist on the style of pizza we're doing.
14:11OK, so I've heard this.
14:12It's pizza with a Japanese twist.
14:14To me, that sounds terribly confusing.
14:16So, look, it is a little bit.
14:18There's a very precise Japanese pizza movement,
14:22and it's around the stretching of the dough,
14:25the ingredients in which they use,
14:27and they can steer away a little bit
14:29from the traditions of Italy,
14:30which makes it really exciting.
14:31This is the Tokyo Bianco,
14:33so that's got fermented green chillies,
14:35bachamel and tuna crudo.
14:37And you've still got the classics on the menu as well, though.
14:39Yeah, so you've got to respect the classics.
14:41So we've got marinara margarita,
14:43we've got garlic bread.
14:44I love Ligon Street
14:45because it's got a real village feel here.
14:47Yeah, it's such a great vibe,
14:48and people are coming from far and wide,
14:50and the weekends down here,
14:52so many families, such a great atmosphere.
14:55We're really, really happy
14:56to bring this product to Ligon Street.
14:59Whatever your vibe,
15:00find a Carlton Street to match.
15:02You can learn more about each of the places I visited
15:04at the websites on screen.
15:07Now, Pauline, I love Melbourne.
15:09Oh, my gosh, I love Melbourne too,
15:11but I'm a Sydneysider.
15:12Of course, so perfect reason to take you around
15:14this grand old town.
15:15So thinking street art, thinking coffee,
15:17thinking a really super cool inner-city restaurant.
15:19Oh, my gosh, sounds perfect.
15:21Right.
15:21I've got my dancing shoes on.
15:22OK, well, that's perfect.
15:23All right, let's go.
15:24See you after the break.
15:36Hey, P.
15:37Oh, good to see you.
15:38Welcome to Melbourne.
15:39It's so great to be in Melbourne,
15:40and to be at the Melbourne Recital Centre,
15:43where we're going to be performing
15:44our Electrifying 80s show very soon.
15:46Oh, I can't wait.
15:47That's coming up next month.
15:48Have to talk about that,
15:49but can you walk and talk,
15:50because we are in a perfect position here
15:52to show you so many great hotspots in Melbourne.
15:55Can I walk and talk?
15:56I was born walking and talking.
15:57Hey, and I can sing too.
15:59Beautifully, as we know.
16:00OK, picks from your day in Melbourne.
16:02All right.
16:04OK, we look hot.
16:05Let's go.
16:06Oh, it's so great to have Paulini in town,
16:08although we have been spending
16:09a lot of time together lately.
16:11Currently, we're tearing up the stage
16:13on our national tour,
16:14Electrifying 80s,
16:15a turbocharged live show
16:17full of all the ultimate 80s hits.
16:20So, Paulini,
16:20this is probably my favourite part of the city.
16:22So, still in the Arts Precinct,
16:23we've got the Botanic Gardens on one side
16:25and NGV on the other.
16:26Oh, I love the NGV.
16:28The exhibitions are absolutely amazing.
16:30Yeah, it's really cool.
16:31Haven't got time to go in, though,
16:32but we do have to take a photo.
16:33So, come on, we go.
16:35All right, got that one.
16:36Let's go.
16:37So, this would have to be
16:44one of my favourite coffee houses
16:45here in Melbourne.
16:46It's a Bench Coffee Co.
16:47in Little Collins Street.
16:48OK.
16:49Every time I have someone
16:50come to Melbourne
16:50who's serious about their coffee
16:51and what they'd experience,
16:52you come right here.
16:53So, flat white for you.
16:54Oh, thank you.
16:56Mmm.
16:57OK, so, coffee is such a big thing in Melbourne.
17:00What makes this place so good?
17:02Well, OK, first of all,
17:03I'll say I normally have my coffee
17:05as an espresso martini,
17:06so no judgement, please.
17:07I love it.
17:07But, no, they're really serious
17:09about their brew here.
17:10Like, it's a really boutique coffee house.
17:11All right, have a sip.
17:13Yes.
17:14I'm doing coffee.
17:16All right, bring it with us.
17:18Take away.
17:18Here we go.
17:19Another quintessential Melbourne experience
17:21Paulini just can't miss
17:23is a visit to the street art tourist hotspot,
17:26Cozier Lane.
17:26Your hair is hollow.
17:28This laneway is so bright and colourful.
17:31It actually reminds me
17:32of our Electrifying 80s show.
17:34Uh-huh.
17:34And you know what?
17:35It's been so great
17:36sharing the stage with you.
17:37It's always so much fun.
17:39Stop it!
17:39And the crowd is always great.
17:41The vibe is awesome.
17:42You know, they sing along.
17:43Oh, well, who doesn't love 80s, obviously?
17:45That's the thing.
17:45When you've got a great band on stage
17:46and you've got such an incredible singer
17:48like yourself up there,
17:49playing all those great Whitney Houston
17:51and Madonna and Tina
17:52and all these kind of great classics,
17:54Billy Joel, everyone's going to get up
17:55and get involved.
