00:06good morning happy tuesday 97 one thanks for getting up with us
00:11nba players were asked who will win the nba title tell you at 702 what they thought of the pistons
00:19playing is tonight uh-huh chance to see at least the first step of who the pistons could be playing
00:24on sunday when they begin the nba playoffs got the two grand slam 725 chance to win some cash today
00:30up to 2 000 bucks if you can get all 10 questions right i mentioned we're gonna talk a lot
00:35of football
00:35today because brad holmes was at the podium yesterday he talked about best player available
00:39and tackles and edges and what are the premium positions f them picks and all the buzzwords
00:46but before we get into all of that have you seen the ruben bain headlines i have and it was
00:52it stems
00:52from a was a 2024 2024 ruben bain people familiar with him pass rusher miami dominant dude he got
01:02involved in a car crash careless driving an accident that occurred at 4 a.m on march 17th 2024 now
01:11this
01:11was not public until yesterday right teams did know about this john he was cited but the charges were
01:20dropped up one of the passengers did pass away yeah i was in a coma for three months ended up
01:26passing
01:26away and the family actually said it was a tragic accident correct i mean accidents do happen yes i
01:36don't know that i don't know the specifics of the car wreck what happened um and this is
01:44not the same but similar headlines to jaylen carter from a couple of years ago it didn't really it i
01:54think
01:55that was more of an issue where okay you have this the interviews were one where there were questions
02:03raised about would he have issues as a pro right i think there are also some work ethic concerns right
02:12all that stuff which is not you don't have any of that other stuff with ruben bain this is a
02:19purely
02:20hypothetical but we're only a couple weeks away from the draft at this point if he did slip that's the
02:27hypothetical i'm not interested in like getting into the litigation of what happened here no no we're
02:33just giving everybody the fact and some comparables yeah if he were to fall does he blow up the draft
02:39board is he a guy you take no matter what at 17 i would probably say yes because he at
02:48that point
02:49would be the best available so monroe freeling's there and ruben bain's there who are you taking
02:55well selfishly i would take monroe freeling professionally i would take ruben bain okay and
03:02so that's what i hope they do because then you're looking at okay if if that's we've said tackle edge
03:11first second round but if a prospect like ruben bain falls to you at 17 then you can go edge
03:20and tackle
03:21because it's all about what type of value are you getting with that pick and what can you get
03:27if you just stand pat and you take your second round pick so i think all of the top obviously
03:35all
03:35of the top tackles are going to be gone you know that now we know out of miami for no
03:39out of utah
03:41freeling obviously blake miller cayden proctor most likely off the board um uh ian acre from
03:51arizona arizona arizona state is probably off the board lomu the second tackle from utah is probably
03:59off the board so who does that leave and it's yes you're taking a step back at one position
04:07but the upside of what you're getting from ruben bain obviously opposite aiden hutchinson and that
04:14defense that has question marks on the back end even if your safeties are healthy what are you doing
04:22with your corners like all of those things become less of an issue if you can apply that type of
04:28pressure so the tackles that you could get in the second round uh jennings dunker from iowa is
04:36projects more of a guard so i would probably steer clear of him but one guy that i do think
04:41is going
04:42to be available and would be a quality pick if you're going to put him at right and move penny
04:47sull over would be caleb tiernan from northwestern yeah you'd have to get more creative in this world
04:53but i don't think you can pass on ruben bain if he falls again i don't know if this is
04:58going to stick
04:59and scare teams away it's an incident from two years ago but if they do some digging and don't like
05:05his background and he starts to slide i think the talent is undeniable yeah this is a player pop on
05:10the
05:10tape at miami he had nine and a half sacks last season i don't care about short arms that's why
05:14i say pop on the tape and look at the production well so why are all the reasons that he
05:19could be
05:19available could slide one of them even before we heard about this accident is the short arms and i do
05:26agree that it is a concern but it may be a concern if you're taking him in the top five
05:31if you're
05:32picking at 17 you're going to be picking with players that all have flaws every player in the draft
05:38is going to have some flaws can i give you the comp that nfl.com uses sure for ruben bain
05:43it's
05:44brandon graham i think that's a great comp so i'd love to get brandon graham opposite aiden hutchinson
05:52the lions haven't used a top 100 pick on an edge player in three straight drafts the last edge player
06:02the lions took with a top 100 pick was josh pascal four drafts ago no i mean this is a
06:09dire need and
06:09i know brad goes we don't have the money to do it in free agency well then the draft is
06:15your oyster
06:16this is where you get your player if ruben bain falls you blow up your draft plans i'm taking him
06:22i'll get the tackle later now if he's not there then all right we stay with the course of getting
06:27that tackle opposite pen a soul in the first round yeah i mean i think it gives you a great
06:33opportunity to to take advantage of whatever the reasons are that he falls and you take him at 17
06:41and then all of a sudden you have to now you have to adjust your breath board draft board it
06:47it doesn't
06:47blow it up no it doesn't blow it up you just have to reconfigure things yeah and and if you
06:53get that
06:54type of player then maybe later in the draft or if if you're looking at okay well we don't have
07:01to
07:01take an edge obviously in the second round we got one in the first we're gonna have to go with
07:05the
07:05offensive line is the guy that we want there well no but we got this great value in the first
07:11round so
07:11let's go ahead and trade our fourth fifth and six yes that we have two of in each of those
07:18rounds
07:18and move up in the second round to the top of the second round here's the other thing
07:23i mean you could debate what the bigger need is but if you're getting the premium player at the
07:28edge spot you take it and doesn't it have the ability to take their defense from a unit that
07:33really struggled and this is how you flip defenses in a hurry as you get to the quarterback suddenly
07:38those safety injuries don't hurt you as much suddenly your corner depth isn't as big a concern
07:45right suddenly that coverage linebacker replacing alex anzalone whoever it may be is asked to cover
07:52less because the quarterback is hit i mean that we've seen that is the the formula that alters
07:58defenses the most time to get to the quarterback if you can speed that up everybody else on defense
08:05benefits aiden might get doubled he might be flustered he might be doing all the twists and
08:10you can't get there and it doesn't matter because one-on-one one dude one and the play ended it
08:15didn't
08:16matter that the safety was a step slow or the corner was late on the read because the plays over
08:20one
08:21player on the d line can end the play so that's why you look at players like ruben bain and
08:26think
08:27if there's any way he's there i know i want to tackle i want to complete my o-line i
08:32want to help
08:32goff i want to restore that identity right i can't pass up a player that that wrecks the game that
08:38that
08:39may turn my defense into a top 10 unit so let's put it like this it doesn't blow up your
08:44draft plan
08:44because you have this plan going in in regards to how far can i move up like it could the
08:52lions
08:53going from 17 to 5 is not going to happen it's not in the cards you don't have that draft
08:57capital
08:57to spend because of the needs how far can i move up is it 17 to 15 17 to i
09:03said as high as they would
09:04go is probably 12 yeah so let's just say ruben bain doesn't fall all the way to 17 but he's
09:09there
09:09at 12 or caleb downs for whatever reason it's team needs team take different players all of a
09:15sudden he's there at 12 i don't think i would take downs over the tackles though no but maybe
09:20monroe freeling if there's a run on tackles now it pushes caleb down now it pushes some of these
09:24other players down the draft board text says they said hutch's arms were too short no issue there
09:30yeah uh another one says guys you know damn well holmes isn't going to take a player with anything
09:36negative in his past gotta be squeaky clean
09:44i think they need good football players yeah and and it all is it's all a matter of do you
09:50think
09:51this is a red flag or was it just a horrific accident well but i think you got to go
09:58obviously do
10:00your homework on it and they're they're aware of this they've been aware of it brad holmes said
10:04you also have to understand if the guy is cleared to play nfl football either he'll be on your team
10:10or he'll be on somebody else's or he'll be hitting your quarterback so you got to decide like where
10:15you want to have morals and if you would rather be the morality police and lose that is an organizational
10:21decision i would be of the belief if the player is eligible and you don't feel like this is repeatable
10:26behavior you put them on your team right and if you don't take a player it doesn't automatically
10:31mean that you're losing like that's a little bit well no but you gotta decide if you want to be
10:37the morality police and have choir boys and only the good guys play for your team well the bad guys
10:41so to speak are going to be eligible and those guys are going to be good football players yeah but
10:46there are also other good players you're limiting your talent that's what i'm saying yes so but doesn't
10:51mean you're going to be bad no but that i'm at a disadvantage i'm handicapping my football team
10:55because i want everybody to not everybody's available to you yes which i think makes it harder to win and
11:01makes it more likely that you lose it's a talent game at the end of the day we learn that
11:06jimmy's
11:06and joe's yeah exactly anyway we got we got room for you guys 248-539-9797 reuben bain if he
11:13falls
11:13is this the guy the lions have to take it's 97-1
11:16is this one
11:16is this one
11:16is this one
11:16is this one
