01:09that you would see that you would want to be better this week just one i know there's a long
01:13list what
01:14would the one number one thing you want to see better from your defense this week
01:19uh i want our guys to be where they're supposed to be uh you know when they're supposed to be
01:25there you know we we need to be on point our our discipline has got to clean up um and
01:32what happens
01:33is what you know it goes back into that when one guy uh makes an error man we we've got
01:39three more
01:39trying to cover for him instead of just doing your job so you know we we got a little bit
01:44of a trust
01:45issue right now um and so we we got to get back to the basics of doing your job man
01:51simply be where
01:52you're supposed to be we listen we applied a lot of pressure the other day and if we get in
01:56these
01:56spots we're supposed to be in either it's a sack it's a stop or it's a turnover is it a
02:02surprise to
02:03you that five going into your fifth week that this is as big of an issue for you guys yeah
02:10i would
02:11like to believe that we we would have cleaned some of this stuff up but but i also know it's
02:16a work in
02:16progress and you continue to coach it up and we'll make a tweak on some of this personnel a little
02:23bit
02:23we're going to give some other guys an opportunity um and uh and go man but we're not going to
02:30accept
02:30mediocrity that's not what we're doing here so we we got too many guys playing at a high level and
02:36we're going to raise the floor on this team yeah how do you walk the line you said you don't
02:40want
02:40to panic and we've talked to you enough over the years that that's not how you want to operate but
02:44you also want urgency so how do you find that balance to make sure you stress i understand i'm
02:49not going to tell you everything i talked to with the team that that's not how this works so what
02:54i tell
02:55you are things that and just in general when i stand in front of the media there's things i'm going
03:00to give but there's things i don't want to give to the opponent and i'm also going to talk to
03:04the
03:04team differently than as we're talking right now so our discipline is not good enough across the
03:11board and we're playing very average football right now and that's everywhere that's everywhere
03:17that's not just defense we got to pick up the slack on offense and special teams right now
03:22that'll alleviate a lot of our defensive issues so it's certainly going to help um and that's what
03:29i'm tasked with man uh i'm about freaking solving problems and i'm going after this thing man we're
03:36not going to be mediocre i don't accept that i know you say it's team wide and complimentary football
03:42what do you say to the fans that think there's needs to be a calvin shepherd conversation that a
03:47change needs to be made at dc yeah i understand all that you know from afar when you look at
03:53it and
03:53you look at the numbers um but but i i believe in kelvin shepherd and i believe we got a
03:59lot of
03:59meat on the bone with this defense right now like i say we're going to continue to tweak we got
04:04more
04:04things that we can do with what we have here there's there's different calls we got to be more
04:09disciplined and then we're going to give some guys more opportunities to play here and we're going to
04:15find the right recipe here's what i do know at crunch time in that game the other day at the
04:21end of
04:22the game with our defense on the field we got two critical stops that's what i do know so at
04:27the end
04:27of the day at all of it we had a chance to win that game and we couldn't close it
04:31out i'll take that
04:34offensively you mentioned hey it's it's it's got to be complimentary football we've talked about this
04:39before and some of the losses where jared goff ends up throwing the ball 50 plus times i know that's
04:44not the recipe that you guys want what were some of the struggles you faced or why wasn't the run
04:48game more successful with jameer kibbs yeah i i thought we would we would be uh more productive
04:56in the run game than we were i thought we would be able to run it better look and that's
05:00a good
05:00front over there we knew that going into it you know uh brown is a good player among others
05:07you know but but we did not sustain and we we did not uh we did not finish our blocks
05:13very well
05:14and when we did we got a penalty so you know we we have to be much better in the
05:19run game and then
05:20some of it you get taken out of you know we only had 15 runs now out of those 15
05:25runs we averaged 3.1
05:27that's not good enough so um that's a collective effort that's all line that's tight ends and that's
05:33receivers man there's some stuff we're not finishing on the perimeter like we normally do
05:38um there's a couple runs gives uh you know would like to have back so it's collective um we don't
05:46want to have to throw it 52 times but when we do then we got to be able to execute
05:49a lot better than
05:51we did we had opportunities even throwing it 52 times you know we we had some to where we have
05:57another explosive we have uh we make the play and it's going to lead the points it's probably going
06:03to lead to a touchdown so you know there's plenty out there we left on the offensive side do you
06:09worry
06:10at all about the defense affecting the offense where they go boy we got to score 30 every single
06:14week does that impact an offense when when they know they have to be not perfect but near perfect
06:20man if you want to be great you could they should want to score 35 points a game at a
06:26minimum
06:26that's what greatness is that's what they're charged with we got plenty of weapons on offense and if
06:32we're going to accept mediocrity then no then yeah we can make all the excuses in the world
06:37but if we want to spit and sputter and be average that's one thing we're not going to be average
06:42we're going to raise the floor on these guys man we're going to push them there's been a lot of
06:47discussion offensively right now our quarterback's too good our playmakers are too good and we got a
06:53young hungry offensive line that's got a ton of room to grow how's kate mays doing um i know we
06:59got
07:00the update yesterday about uh brian branches waiting for the doctors how about kate mays
07:05he's doing great he and branch are on the same plan right now so the plan is to get them
07:11working
07:11to practice we're waiting on the final call from the doctor on both to say yes they can practice
07:16we'd love to get them going this week doesn't mean they're going to play
07:20dan i know you were open about the interest in joey porter jr uh chris collinsworth on the tv
07:25broadcast question whether you guys have the the players to run the man-to-man that you've
07:30previously run it is that a fair critique of the team right now no i believe we can play man
07:37-to-man
07:38and we need to play a lot better in zone all right we need to be where we're supposed to
07:42be um but no
07:44we can play man-to-man and and then look where there's some areas we're going to have to tilt
07:49the
07:49way uh we'll have to tilt sometimes to to one of the other receivers depending on who we have
07:55and and inevitably somebody's going to be locked up one-on-one with no help and you got to win
08:00and we have the guys that can win i'm going to give you one more on the defensive side of
08:06things
08:06because against new orleans we saw the tight ends have a big day buffalo big day jets a big day
08:12your guys are facing trey mcbride this coming weekend how do you how do you corral him and make
08:19sure that he's not as big of an impact as he's been in some of arizona's games
08:25you know what i want i want somebody to come in tomorrow and say i want mcbride that's what i
08:30want
08:32i want to know who that's going to be on our defense
08:37who do you want it to be anybody
08:42with that group in general what have you seen when john talks about tight ends or over the
08:46middle coverage has it been hey i know you want to stop the run first is it maybe an over
08:51commitment
08:51to the run that then exposes you what's the diagnosis when you look at it yeah probably boots
08:57you know dirty eyes on some stuff um you know the slam boots the overs that's where we're getting in
09:04trouble a little bit it's really not man or match coverage um you know now we you know we got
09:11hit the
09:11other day on the third down um but but that's where a lot of it has been because we really
09:17haven't
09:17played in very much man at all um so that's that's where we got to be better you know other
09:25than
09:25trey mcbride when you guys play arizona what else concerns you about this team on either side of the ball
09:32uh for arizona yes yeah well this back is dynamic i mean this is a very good back he's dangerous

09:40he's got a different gear he can find it i know he hadn't played a ton but but you can
09:45see every
09:46game that he's that they put him in um and he's getting acclimated man his his gears are going up
09:53and he's dynamic out of the backfield i think the soul lines uh plays pretty hard man i think they
09:59lean on you up front and uh and i think that wilson's an issue man i think he's i think
10:05he's
10:06an underrated receiver you know um i think this guy can get open i think he's physical uh and so
10:13between he and mcbride you know they're a handful over there and then defensively man this the budda
10:19baker man is a difference maker you know he floats down there on the back end man he still makes
10:25plays
10:25he runs he hits he can be the nickel he can be top safety he can be linebacker uh and
10:31then you know
10:31we know this this line the c line's pretty good man they got length they are active you know we
10:37had
10:37lopez here he's he's a handful over there sweat can apply pressure nolan's gotten a lot better and
10:44then collins is talented on the edge so look these guys will get after you um and they're playing with
10:51a lot they've been every one of these games uh pretty much and it's coming down to the wire and
10:55so that's what this one's going to be man we're going to have to go earn this win on the
10:58road
