00:03demise were greatly exaggerated
00:05back-to-back days with a home run
00:07a walk-off yesterday
00:10Dan Dickerson on a
00:11call yep torque
00:13hey pleasant
00:15surprise
00:18this is great
00:19so Blake Miller the pick for the Detroit Lions
00:22and a
00:23twitch comment made this point
00:26he's a guy
00:27from Ohio that didn't pick Ohio State
00:29one more reason to love him
00:31he shows great
00:33decision making even as a young man
00:36the comparison
00:37to one John Jansen only continues
00:39we pointed out Caller did it
00:41first he was a team captain
00:43who played 50 plus games and only missed a single
00:45practice that's Jansen to a T
00:47both of you were three star recruits
00:49yeah he was recruited as an
00:51offensive lineman I was recruited as a tight end
00:53one won a national title
00:55the other one won a Costa
00:57preseason national title
01:00how'd they end up this past year
01:01not not as great as I thought they'd be John
01:03now we've asked people for their feedback and looking ahead what they want to happen tonight
01:08and I think they've got to go defense
01:10and whether it's linebacker
01:12it's edge
01:14safety corner like there's needs at every single level at every single position
01:18I think the
01:21the sexier pick is going to be the edge position
01:23and we'll all have eyeballs on
01:25on you know
01:26every single edge that goes off the board until they pick
01:30who's available at that time
01:33Texas do you think Blake was the best player available rich in a machine
01:38I still think that Monroe was the the best player available but I understand why they went with Blake
01:46tech says people who want more of a win now team should prefer this pick to Freeling
01:51right because it's it like I said it's a higher floor and it's a much more proven commodity
01:58so we both think it's a higher floor
02:00I also don't think the ceiling is all that different
02:02they both athletically profile as long you know movers
02:06so what I saw what I really liked about Monroe Freeling was
02:10a little bit of what we see in Penny Sewell now okay don't go don't fly off the handle
02:14I'm not comparing him to Penny Sewell I don't think there was a Penny Sewell in this draft
02:18but being able to get out on screens
02:21when you watch some of his highlights of of his adjustments on combos and then getting off on linebackers
02:29I liked the athletic ability of and and what I saw from Monroe Freeling
02:34Blake Miller just wasn't asked to do a lot of those things so they weren't on film
02:39sure the combo blocks getting up on the second level yes he was asked to do those
02:42but blocking in space we did not see that as much with him
02:46and that's more of an offense that they run in Clemson versus the offense that they run in Georgia
02:51I don't know that he could do that but I don't know that he can't
02:55Texas I heard Miller doesn't move well and will get beat by speed in the pros decent pass block
03:00uh but not a very but but not a good run blocker
03:03so I I disagree with that in regards to the run blocking I think he's a terrific run blocker um
03:10in terms of I think the athletic ability the change the ability to set off the ball Monroe Freeling
03:17showed me that he's got the speed the quickness the athletic ability to do it
03:22what I like about Blake Miller is his craftiness I talked about the change up pitch earlier if you don't
03:29have that and that was a weakness I had of being able to set those wide nine guys
03:35and then you know when you when you're blocking like I mean I had to block guys like Reggie White
03:40early in my career which you know okay at that time he wasn't a speed guy but you still had
03:43to
03:44respect it it was always that hump move inside um but you that that is a concern at the same
03:52time if
03:53you're six seven and you are an athlete you can get out and attack speed and set the edge against
04:01speed the tools are there the tools are there but it's a matter of can you do it like there's
04:07a lot
04:07of guys that have all the tools the question is like why can't they do it well you know there's
04:12an
04:12art to it as well sure and his art Blake Miller at college is being able to do what he
04:21does best
04:22and if it's not setting on those wide nine guys well how do I make them play my game versus
04:28me
04:28playing their game on the NFL Network broadcast when the Lions took Miller Daniel Jeremiah said that he
04:37was the highest rated tackle on his board okay I think this was a preference thing with him and
04:44free sure I don't feel like there was an a graded tackle and a b graded tackle and the Lions
04:49took the
04:50b I think it was a beholder and I'm cautious cautious in saying a safe pick because I don't want
04:59to sit
04:59there and say well the ceiling isn't there for Blake Miller this is a safer pick than Monroe
05:05Freeling I think Monroe Freeling he had 17 starts versus watching 54 starts you know more about Blake
05:13Miller on the field turning on the tape than you do about Monroe Freeling because there's just more
05:18of it how about this comparison taking Miller over Freeling reminds me of the Laporta situation
05:26there is a Notre Dame tight end that people considered to be better Lions went Laporta and look how it
05:33turned out who was the tight end from didn't he go to the Bears Raiders Raiders the Raiders Mayor
05:40like that's right yeah that commit was the Notre Dame or that went to the Bears yeah if safety is
05:48the best available on your board you take it but with how many needs we have I'm not forcing it
05:51we
05:51kind of have to hope that Kirby and Branch are big contributors next year yeah there's a little bit
05:56of hope there I mean you there's a little bit of hope on defense because you can't fill all of
06:01the
06:01holes I mean like first rounds over and you got one pick in the second then you don't pick again
06:07as it stands right now until the fourth round so I'm not I'm not counting on fourth rounders as being
06:14starters coming into the season you shouldn't have to Lions have one pick today the way you've been
06:20talking you think they're going to make more than one pick today I do think that they will trade back
06:24into the third round so they can get two starter contributors or they go linebacker and maybe
06:33this Rodriguez out of Texas Tech and they trade for Kayvon Thibodeau with one of those fours I think
06:39both those are good options and but here's the thing you have to understand Kayvon Thibodeau if you
06:44trade for him that's a rental yeah because I don't think you pick up the fifth year option
06:49and after if he has a great year you're not going to pay him right so you let him walk
06:53and now you're
06:54letting a fourth round pick walk out the door but what else are you going to get with that fourth
06:58round pick I just told you I'm not getting a guy that I I believe is a defined starter in
07:03the fourth
07:03round just one thing that I do want to caution everybody against because we're starting to get
07:10this let's trade for Kayvon Thibodeau dream so to speak just a word of caution yeah the Lions
07:18have to want to get him they have to want right player and they should know everything about him
07:24because when it when that draft happened it was are they going to take Thibodeau are they going to
07:30take was a Walker um that ended up going to Jacksonville first overall or Hutch I think they
07:36made the best decision Hutch fell into their lap but because they didn't have to choose between him
07:41and Walker but between him and Kayvon Thibodeau there was a healthy debate of which one they should
07:47take but if the Lions don't want him they're not going to do it for him right the the one
07:52big knock
07:53is he's in his last year of his contract yeah so what are you doing going forward wouldn't you rather
07:57go to to shape up the defensive line go sign Cam Jordan you don't have to give up anything yeah
08:03but
08:03so yeah ideally sure it but Cam Jordan just like hey the Lions have to want to trade for Kayvon
08:09Thibodeau Cam Jordan has to want to sign with the Lions and we we talked we talked about the three
08:13parameters but it's been thrown around it's probably going to be a two-year deal with him
08:17so you got him two instead of one you don't have to make a commitment to Thibodeau you don't have
08:21to
08:21give up capital so Bosa and Jordan are unsigned right right I think we all want the edge that they
08:29you know invest in that'll be here with upside but if there's a better defender that plays linebacker
08:35like I keep thinking about Rodriguez right not Malcolm but
08:39kid out of Texas Tech you could pair that pick with signing one of those veteran defensive ends
08:45and you'd feel a lot better about your front seven sure um and and when we talk about Kayvon
08:51Thibodeau Greg you're right they have to want to go get him if that's the case if let's just go
08:57with
08:57that assumption that they they said yeah you know let's explore that they don't have a third if
09:03Kayvon Thibodeau was in this draft would you take him in the third yes if if they have to give
09:08up a
09:08fourth which they have to love would you take them knowing that you only have them for one year
09:14yeah I would I don't think they would but I would Texas I don't care what they do today
09:21they've already failed the draft they drafted the worst individual player taken in round one
09:27and they drafted the fast seventh best off it says at best the seventh best offensive tackle at 17
09:34what a joke no the the the thankfully they their decision was made easier if we believe the reports
09:43that they were all over Caden Proctor by not having to make that decision Miami saved us from that one
09:50yeah thank you to them guys checks in the mail you can type anything into the tech attacks and it'll
09:56appear on the internet it'll just show up there it's amazing yeah guys I gave us an a minus round
10:03one now rounds two through four as annoying as it is let Brad cook we need two defensive playmakers at
10:08least another says I'd love to see a trade for Kayvon Thibodeau and then draft Jacob Rodriguez suddenly I
10:14would love the offseason Blake Miller was the best available or sorry Blake Miller's best ability is
10:22availability it's extremely comforting to know we have two tackles that can go the entire season
10:28holding up yeah passing on Freeling was a mistake that's Mark in a truck yeah I'm not I'm not going
10:34to
10:34sit there and say it wasn't uh I was all over Monroe Freeling and he was there they didn't take
10:40him
10:40um and and so I mentioned this earlier could they have traded down and still gotten Blake Miller
10:49I don't know and I worry about the risk of it like what to pick up an extra fourth round
10:53pick I
10:54jeopardize getting a plug and play right tackle right I don't think it's worth it two options you
10:58had you had Monroe Freeling and you had Blake Miller but you here's the other thing is you had to
11:05have
11:05somebody that wanted to trade up to that position don't let perfect be the enemy of good thank you
11:11that's a great way to put it Greg 248-539-9797 coming up next it's the cookie jar which includes
11:19a
11:19question about Vrabel and Rossini who's handling this worse it's 97-1
11:25you
