00:01It began under former opposition leader Susan Lee and it is today the opposition leader
00:06Angus Taylor that will be outlining some elements of the policy in a speech that he's making
00:11in Sydney. Part of the policy is around the Australian values statement. At the moment
00:16anyone applying for a visa has to sign that they agree to the Australian values. The list
00:22includes things such as abiding to Australia's laws, agreeing that there's freedom of religion
00:27in Australia and that English is the national language. Angus Taylor is arguing that those
00:32values need to be legally binding so if someone doesn't agree to them or doesn't follow them
00:38they should have their visa cancelled and kicked out of the country. So Australia has always
00:43had a non-discriminatory immigration plan but Angus Taylor says it should discriminate when
00:49it comes to values. If people aren't following our values they should be kicked out. That
00:53said when he was asked this morning well you know how many people would no longer come
00:57to Australia or would be forced to leave Australia as a result of this change he said it would
01:02be a very small number. Another element of the policy is around social media. There seems
01:07to be a bit of confusion though this morning as to who it would apply to. Initially the
01:11ABC was told that it would be everyone would have to hand over their social media details if
01:17they were applying for a visa. But Angus Taylor during a radio interview this morning was saying
01:22that that wouldn't be the case, that it would be risk weighted. So still questions there
01:27around exactly how it would work. The Coalition also wants to set up a task force to kick people
01:35out of the country if they've overstayed their visa. And Shadow Home Affairs Minister John O'Dunnion
01:40was on ABC earlier this morning just talking through why they want to see these changes put
01:45into place. This is about ensuring that people abide by what is a common set of values.
01:52Of course part of what we're announcing today is vetting people that want to come into this
01:57country and ensuring they do, before they get here, abide by, based on the information
02:01they provide and available to authorities and intelligence agencies, abide by what we consider
02:06to be the norms and the way life should be in this country. So we want to weed out the
02:12people
02:12that shouldn't be coming here, like hate preachers. We've seen a couple of those coming in recent times.
02:17And the policy also looks to try to take support away from people who aren't citizens.
02:22Yeah Gemma, so what this means is if someone has their visa cancelled, they have a right to apply
02:27to see if that can be overturned. And the Coalition is saying that they no longer should be able to
02:33access legal support that's funded by the taxpayer. They also want non-permanent citizens to wait longer
02:40to access any social services support. And they want to change to how a housing scheme works here in Australia.
02:47At the moment there's a scheme set up. You only need a 5% deposit to then purchase a home.
02:53At the moment permanent residents are allowed to access this scheme. The Coalition is saying that they shouldn't be able
02:59to.
02:59To put it into figures and context for you, there's about 300,000 Australians that have accessed this scheme so
03:07far.
03:08Of that group, about 48,000 are permanent residents. So it's about 16% of this whole scheme has been
03:14used by permanent residents.
03:16The Coalition is saying they shouldn't be allowed to, only it should be open to Australian citizens.
03:21The context of that is the fact that the Coalition is concerned about the rise in support for the party
03:27of One Nation.
03:28One Nation is highly anti-immigration, and they've been blaming migrants on the problems that Australia is facing around housing
03:36shortages.
03:37Government Minister Pat Conroy was on News Breakfast earlier today, and he was raising concerns about the Coalition's policy and
03:45the motives behind it.
03:47Now we're just seeing desperate dog whistling from Angus Taylor, who's desperately trying to compete with One Nation in a
03:55race to the bottom.
03:55He has to be honest with the Australian public about what industries won't get workers through their policies.
04:03Who's going to lose doctors? Who's going to lose nurses? Who's going to lose aged care workers?
04:08Now, as mentioned, this is only the first part of the Coalition's migration policy.
04:13A key question we still have is exactly how many migrants they want entering the country on a yearly basis.
04:20That's a figure that they're yet to announce, but in previous weeks and months, they've been calling for that to
04:25be reduced.
