00:01To be honest, I was disappointed in some aspects of the speech as reported this morning.
00:08I was disappointed to see a continuation of dehumanization of migrants, which is something
00:15that's happening at all levels of politics.
00:17I was disappointed with condemning an entire Palestinian population that sought asylum
00:25here and are clearly escaping horrors in Gaza.
00:29And I was disappointed at this introduction of this idea of a test based on a vague notion
00:36of Australian values with an implicit meaning that people from some countries shouldn't
00:42be admitted into Australia.
00:44And the reality is that people that come here, migrants that come here, they believe in dignity,
00:49respect, equity.
00:51That, to me, is what Australian values, if you're going to define them, are.
00:56And this notion that people that come from some countries just because of the political
01:01structure of those countries won't believe and respect dignity and equity, it's one that
01:07is discriminatory and it really targets migrants.
01:11It will often mean that people of colour who are migrants or from particular religions will
01:16be seen as not belonging, will then encounter racism, and communities here, that are already
01:23here, will encounter an increase in racism.
01:26And that's actually exactly what we've seen in response to an increased anti-immigration
01:32rhetoric.
01:32Well, at the moment it's just a policy being announced by an opposition leader.
01:37I think there will definitely be pushback, and I've already seen pushback from migrant communities,
01:41who are, quite frankly, a bit sick of being blamed for all of the problems that are occurring
01:47now.
01:47I mean, if fuel prices go up, migrants get blamed.
01:51If you can't buy a house, migrants get blamed.
01:53If you're stuck in traffic, migrants get blamed.
01:55It's unfair, it's discriminatory, and it's not actually tackling the real sources of inequity
02:02uncertainty within our society.
